Re: [AI] 11-Year-Old Visually Challenged Boy Becomes Tamil Channel News Anchor

2015-05-03 Thread Bhavya shah
Hi,
Can I get to listen to the 22 minutes of news reading by this visually
impaired boy? Has it been archived or been made available for future
access?
Thanks.

11-Year-Old Visually Challenged Boy Becomes Tamil Channel News Anchor

Close on the heels of introducing a transgender as a new anchor,
city-headquartered Tamil channel Lotus News today presented a visually
challenged boy as a news reader, claiming it was the first in the world.

Eleven-year-old Sriramanujam, born blind at birth, read the special news
live with the help of Braille for 22 minutes, while his anxious teary-eyed
 parents watched.

The news he read included the follow up of the Nepal earthquake and the
 Mahinda Rajapaksa trial.

Channel Chairman, GKS Selvakumar told PTI that the main purpose of
introducing the visually handicapped boy was to promote and create awareness
on eye donation among the public,

So that such talented people get their vision back and achieve their
 goals.

At present he has been tasked with reading special newseekly and after some
time, Sriramanujam would become a permanent daily news reader, he said.

Sriramanujam said being blind, he wanted to achieve something in life and
chose the TV medium, so that many people could see him reading the news.

A fifth standard student of Government School at Uliyampalayam on the
outskirts of the city, Sriramanujam, hailing from Palani, said he went
through these news items six times before going live.

I was scared in the first two minutes but then it was business and I read
 it fluently, he said.

Asked what his ambition was, he said he wants to become a Collector.

 Hi,

Now, coming to your actual points:

In terms of web support, NVDA is more or less indisputantly the

Regarding mouseover links, raise that on the NVDA Users list, I'm not
 fully sure of that.
 Him Prasad Sir,
Excellent and appropriate analogy used to describe the situation
 between the two.
 Hozefa Sir,
I agree with Ashik Sir, we are simply encouraging and promoting the
use of free and open source assistive technology whose development is
progressive, active and full of potentials. JAWS must have had been
the first in the screen reader industry, but, NVDA is changing the
situation by offering amazing competition to JAWS, that too, at no
 cost.
 Vedprakash Sir,
The bottomline of yours, and others' messages is to try and improve
the product you like. There were some bugs and limitations of NVDA
which I reported myself, and were fixed eventually through code
contribution from the community more than the lead developers
 themselves.
 Sanjay Sir,
Never heard of this CAB, could someone provide detailed information to
 quench my curiosity?
 Thanks.

its lead developers (James Teh and Michael Curren)'s

A year or so ago, I switched to NVDA after acquiring training
for JAWS, and due to the seemless and minimal learning curve,

The NVDA community is as vibrant as the NVDA project itself.
I agree with Him Prasad Sir as the main reason for usage of
JAWS being that it is the screen reader for whom training is
readily available and whose crack is widely distributed.
I sometimes temporarily start JAWS and find it rather
 uncomfortable to work with.
Let us endorse NVDA and ESpeak, two excellent community driven

Thanks.

I agree that NVDA is playing a vital role by providing more or less
same functionality compared to JAWS. But we should not forget that
JAWS is the first screen reader which enabled the visually challenged

If you have any complaints for JAWS regarding its functionality, you

Govt plans app for the disabledTimes of India TNN | May 1, 2015, 04.07 AM

NEW DELHI: Now a person with disability or any other person will be able to
upload pictures and status of accessibility of buildings and public spaces
via an app on the portal to be created by the ministry of social justice
 and empowerment.

The ministry is creating the dedicated portal for the disabled where they
can directly forward their grievances for action.

The Centre's ambitious Accessible India Campaign (Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan)
will start from seven states - Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Assam,
Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Haryana- from this year envisaging a nation-wide
awareness campaign towards universal accessibility for all citizens
 including persons with disabilities.

According to senior officials of the ministry, it has created a dedicated
program management unit, steering committee and other sub-committees in the
ministry with representation of professionals and experts to create media
strategy and media planning, conduct awareness workshops for sensitization
of all key stake holders as identified and creation and dissemination of
educational booklets for spreading the awareness. The next stage is to sign
MoU with various ministries and state government agencies for their role
and responsibilities for the campaign. This nationwide flagship campaign is
aimed at achieving universal accessibility for Persons with Disabilities
 (PwDs).

According to 2011 census over 2.2% of the population is disabled, while the
erstwhile Planning Commission estimated that 5% of the population of India
is disabled. According to WHO 8% of the Indian population is disabled.

The meeting had representatives from national institutes (visual, hearing
and physically handicapped) and office of chief commissioner for persons
with disability. State government officials and representatives from
ministries like labour, social welfare, health, sports and youth affairs,
urban development, civil aviation, rural development and ASI, Delhi Metro
 and CPWD, were also present.

In line with Nothing about us, without us, the steering committee had
representation from disability sector which includes Svayam, Samarthyam,
Enabling Unit of the University College of Medical Sciences, Delhi
University and National Association for the Blind giving critical inputs.

While the plan is to achieve a barrier free environment for the PwDs in
next five years, the initial impetus is on capacity building and awareness
 campaign.

Nice artical that provide current status of accessibility of academic
institutions in Mumbai. Same is the situation In Pune We are trying to
make course carriculam accessible, university web services
accessibility compliant and Built environment barrier free. But it is
getting very difficult to convince academic administraters. They all
never say no for accessibility implementation. Their enthusiasm is
very high at the time of our presentation. But latter on they never
tern to take any action despite law. How long we should take their
humble follow up. I feel very sorry that despite a part of the
academic system, i could not yet do any change in my university. It is
the court order. But who cares HC? I think there should be huge
penelty for non compliance. Then only we can get accessible
environment. Or we all should plan agitation to make academic system
accessible for persons with disabilities.

[AI] New York Times: Maimed Defending Afghanistan, Then Neglected

LASHKAR GAH, Afghanistan — Saheb had a problem: His left leg had been
blown off by a Taliban bomb and he could not afford a prosthesis. He
also had a solution: His 11-year-old daughter, Noor Bibi, whom he sold
last year for $3,000 to pay for a new leg. Saheb is among the tens of
thousands of soldiers and policemen who have been wounded fighting for
the government in the country’s long-running civil war. Faced with
inadequate or nonexistent official support, many are resorting to
desperate measures to survive.

Others who are getting support find themselves on the margins of a
society that treats people with disabilities as outcasts.

In a war with a fatality rate that rises each year, the number of
those who survive attacks but are disabled permanently is soaring as
well, overwhelming the resources available from the Afghan government
and charitable organizations. Even by the most conservative estimate,
Afghanistan has 130,000 disabled people who had served in the police
or other security forces, 40,000 of whom had amputations, according to
government figures for those receiving pensions. The total is almost
certainly much higher because the government releases no figures on
disabled former members of the regular military.
Many, like Fardeen, 24, a former police sergeant who lost his right
leg below the knee to a Taliban bomb in 2013, which also destroyed his
left ankle and foot, do not get even the meager pensions to which they
are entitled.

Fardeen, who like many Afghans uses one name, instead waits until dark
and then rolls his wheelchair into the heavy evening traffic in the
Macrorayan neighborhood of Kabul to beg — while praying that none of
his former colleagues see him.

“Sometimes I hear the girls in the cars saying, ‘Look at that handsome
young man. Why is he begging in the street?’ ” he said, sitting with a
blanket over his legs. “They don’t see what’s down there.”

The scope of the problem is daunting. In just one fighting season here
in the southern province of Helmand last year, a single Afghan police
battalion, the 2nd Police Battalion in Sangin, had 154 men disabled by
their wounds — out of 344 in all, according to Dr. Abdul Hamidi, head
of the Helmand Police Clinic. “This year is worse than all previous
years; it’s really bad,” Dr. Hamidi said in December.

Most of the seriously wounded men come to the Emergency Hospital here,
run by an international aid group based in Italy. Many of the wounded
expressed anger with what they said was a lack of help from the
central authorities.

“The government is only a government in name — they will not give me
anything,” said Mohammad Qassim, 28, who lost his right leg in a
bombing in Marja, where he was an officer with the Afghan Local
Police, a militia nominally under the command of the central
government. Both his brothers are also militia members who have
received nothing from the government after being wounded. “With the
Taliban, if one Talib dies they give 15,000 afghanis to the family a
month for two years. Our government is weaker than the Taliban.” That
pension would be about $275 a month.
Police or army who are disabled are supposed to get a pension equal to
their last salary for life. Survivors of those who are killed should
get the same pension. But a combination of corruption, mismanagement
and daunting bureaucracy keeps many from getting paid.

Officers with the Afghan Local Police, who are paid by the government
for fighting, get nothing when they are wounded, even though they have
a disproportionately high share of casualties in places like Helmand,
where fighting is intense.

That is why Saheb, who also has one name, found himself so desperate.
An Afghan Local Police commander in Paktika Province, Saheb was
wounded when his vehicle hit a land mine while in pursuit of Taliban
fighters. Months after his injury, he had stopped receiving his salary
and he was not entitled to a pension.

In Kabul and at six other locations around the country, the
International Committee of the Red Cross runs rehabilitation centers
that fit prostheses for free, teach patients how to walk again and
provide job training. But Saheb could not afford transportation to go
to the nearest center, in Kabul, and to stay there for the months of
therapy he would need once he got a prosthesis.

“It was a very sad moment for me,” he said. “And it was a very sad
moment for her as well,” he added, referring to his daughter, Noor
Bibi. The girl was unhappy about being sold for marriage, he said, but
“in Pashtun society, when the father wants something, the daughter has
to give it, even if she is not happy.”

Saheb was not happy either. “Selling my daughter was worse than losing
my leg,” he said. After getting his new leg in Kabul, Saheb returned
to his village in Paktika Province, where

[AI] Madhya Pradesh: Incentive on marriage of differently-abled doubled

2015-05-03 Thread avinash shahi
Any comments from listers based in Madhya Pradesh?
Enlighten us about the ground realities in the state, please
So our MSJE and Minister of External Affairs were present for the
event. And this was the biggest aid-giving exercise in India? Again,
So many issues coming out to ponder upon. Do several states and NGOs
sponsoring mass marriages of disabled is to be welcomed? Should
Central government also start running such scheme? and how MP is
implementing in the state 6 per cent reservation announced on paper? I
hope friends from MP would speak up and let us know the actual picture
in the state.

http://www.dailypioneer.com/state-editions/bhopal/incentive-on-marriage-of-differently-abled-doubled.html
Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has announced to increase
incentive money on marriage of disabled couples from Rs50,000 to Rs1
lakh. This would be in addition to Rs25,000 given under Mukhyamantri
Kanyadan Yojana. Giving consent to proposal by the Union Ministry for
Social Justice to allot land at Bhopal for composite regional centre
for welfare of disabled persons, he announced to make available
requisite land from the State Government.

The CM was addressing a district-level camp for assistance to disabled
persons held at Raisen by Union Ministry for Social Justice and
district administration on Saturday. In the camp, aides were
distributed to 4,700 disabled persons. In terms of number of
beneficiaries, this was the biggest district level camp in the
country.

Referring to welfare schemes for disabled persons, the Chief Minister
said they have been given six per cent reservation in Government
service. Their children are being given scholarships. It has been
decided to open special industrial training institutes for empowering
disabled persons to get jobs and start self-employment. Urging the
Union Government for holding such camps in every district of the
State, he assured all possible assistance by the State Government for
this.

Chouhan said that disabled persons can lead normal life with a little
assistance. Service to them is the biggest humanitarian service.
Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj lauded Union Ministry for
Social Justice and Raisen district administration for holding the
massive camp for assistance to disabled persons. She said that use of
word handicapped for disability has been abolished at international
level since such people considered able differently. She said that one
can overcome his physical disabilities by developing skills.

Union Social Justice Minister Thawar Chand Gehlot said that the
Central Government is committed to complete socio-economic upliftment
of disabled persons. Modern aides are being developed for them and
financial assistance extended to move ahead in life. He said that
disabled persona are part and parcel of human resources. Central
Government is extending them maximum opportunity to display their
skills and talents. As a result, disabled persons have brought laurels
to India in sports and other fields.

Union Minister of State for Social Justice Krishna Pal Singh informed
that Disabled Empowerment Department has been constituted under the
ministry, which is running various institutions and corporations for
welfare of the disabled. He dwelt in detail on disabled persons'
welfare schemes.

Re: [AI] Help required regarding shortcut keys for IP messenger

2015-05-03 Thread Jerin Jose
Dear friend,

I am using IP Messenger in my office without any difficulty. I am
using it with JAWS 14 and Windows 7 (32 bit). to open IP messenger,
you can use the system tray list. To find the list of contacts use
shift+tab from the edit box where the focus lands by default. To
attach a file or folder you have to press application key after
selecting the contact/s in the listt. Hope this helps. If you require
any further assistance please contact me offline.

Re: [AI] windows 8.1

2015-05-03 Thread mukesh jain
hello,
In Windows 8, Microsoft focused on making Windows boot and shut down
faster and so they completely removed the sounds which play at logon,
log off and
shutdown.

Sounds Control Panel no longer has events for Shutdown, Logon or Logoff

The startup sound remained in Windows 8 but it is disabled by default.
You need to go to the Sound Control Panel - Sounds tab and check the
option Play
Windows Startup sound.

Even if you turn on the Windows startup sound, it will only play if
you did a full shut down. It never plays when fast startup is on. So
what is the solution?
The trick is to simply use the Windows event log system to play the sounds now.

So I am sharing here one Startup Sound Enabler for Windows 8. This
app will allow you to assign a startup sound with just one click! It
does the job of creating
the script with the sound you pick and setting it up in Task Scheduler
automatically.

The application has a very simple UI: click the Set Startup Sound
button to set the startup sound or click Disable Startup Sound to
disable it.
That's it!

You can download this utility from this link:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3482069/ssnd8_%5Bwinaero.com%5D_1450.zip

I am also sharing few good sounds to play when screen logs on, which
can be downloaded from here:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3482069/WindowsMe_%5Bwinsounds.com%5D_363.zip

if you want to do this method mannualy, then here are the steps given below:
note: the steps are bit lengthier but are easy if you follow them carefully.
1. Open Notepad and paste the following lines into it. (This is a
simple VBScript for Windows to play any sound using the Speech API. I
prefer this method
because it doesn't depend on loading some bloated and slow program
such as Windows Media Player just to quickly play one sound and close
it):
 Set oVoice = CreateObject(SAPI.SpVoice)
set oSpFileStream = CreateObject(SAPI.SpFileStream)
oSpFileStream.Open C:\Windows\Media\Windows Logon.wav
oVoice.SpeakStream oSpFileStream
oSpFileStream.
CloseTip: Note the sound used in this script is a lovely new sound
included in Windows 8 located at C:\Windows\Media. You can change
it to any other .WAV sound you want located in this directory.
2. Save this file anywhere with a .VBS extension. For example, Logon Sound.vbs
3. Now we need to find some appropriate event to associate this sound.
Open Event Viewer by typing: Eventvwr into the Run dialog, or on the
Start screen.
4. Open Event Viewer opens, expand the 'Windows Logs' category and
click the 'System' log.
5. Now click the Action menu and click Find...
6. In the Find what: text box, type: 7001 and press Enter or Find
Next button. The Winlogon event will be selected.
(7001 is the Event ID for one of the many events which gets logged
into the Event Log when you log on to Windows)
7. Now right click this event and click 'Attach Task to This Event...'
8. The 'Create Basic Task Wizard' window will open.
9. Type a descriptive name if you want such as Logon sound and click
Next. Typing a name is optional, so it's easier to locate this task
later if you
need to delete it.
10. Click Next again and then choose 'Start a program' and Next again.
11. In the Program/script: field, type: WScript.exe. In the Arguments
field, enter the path to the file you saved. For example,
C:\Windows\Logon Sound.vbs
12. Check the box called Open the Properties dialog for this task
when I click Finish Then click Finish to create the task.
13. Optionally, go to the Conditions tab and uncheck Start the task
only if the computer is on AC power, if you want the logon sound to
play even when
your Windows 8 PC or tablet is running on batteries.
14. Click OK and close Event Viewer.
15. Now try shutting down Windows from the Settings Charm (Win+I), or
by pressing Alt+F4 on the Desktop, or from your favorite Start Menu
replacement such
as
Classic Shell.
16. The next time you log in, the sound should play. That's it! You
just revived your logon sound. The startup sound will still play when
you do a full
shut down and this newly assigned sound will play when you log on.

I myself have tested both the manual and automated loading utility
methods and it works fine.
Hope this helps.
