[AI] News of Interest: Soon,‘Smart’ facial recognition cane for visually impaired
Power to technology! http://www.tribuneindia.com/news/science-technology/-smart-facial-recognition-cane-for-visually-impaired/78693.html London A revolutionary ‘smart’ cane that enables the visually impaired to instantly identify friends and family may soon be available. The ‘XploR’ mobility cane, being developed by Birmingham City University students Steve Adigbo, Waheed Rafiq and Richard Howlett, uses smartphone technology to recognise familiar faces from up to 10 metre away. The cane also features Global Positioning System (GPS) functionality to aid navigation. The smart cane incorporates facial recognition technology to alert the user when they are approaching a relative or friend. There's nothing else out there like this at the moment, said Adigbo. The team has already presented the XploR cane to medical and science professionals in Luxembourg and France, and plan to visit organisations in Germany later this year. Medical and healthcare companies in France really liked the product. Hopefully it'll be making a real difference to people's lives soon, said Waheed. The students have designed the XploR cane to detect faces up to 10 metre away, vibrating when detecting a recognisable individual from a bank of images stored on an internal SD memory card. The device will guide users towards friends and family members using an ear piece and audio guidance, with the information being relayed through Bluetooth technology. The students conducted market research at the Beacon Centre for the Blind in Wolverhampton, West Midlands, to determine key features that the visually impaired would find useful in a mobility cane. We found that high-spec technology features were essential requirements for users, as well as the cane needing to be fairly lightweight and easy to use, said Waheed. We'll be returning to the Beacon Centre later this year for people to test the product and also to highlight t -- Avinash Shahi Doctoral student at Centre for Law and Governance JNU Register at the dedicated AccessIndia list for discussing accessibility of mobile phones / Tabs on: http://mail.accessindia.org.in/mailman/listinfo/mobile.accessindia_accessindia.org.in Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. [AI] Again gross violation of right of equal opportunity for visually impaired
Hey all, yesterday(10th of May 2015) I was having my PCS priliminary exam conducted by Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission. But I was not allowed to appear in the exam just on the basis of erroneous, fallacious and arbitrary conclusions drawn by examination in-charge of that particular center. When I entered into the examination hall along with my writer, the examination in charge asked me to firnish my documents pertaining to my disability. I handed over my disability certificate for his perusal. After close examination of my disability certificate, he told me that since your disability is merely 70%, hence you are not eligible to avail the service of the scribe. According to him the writer are allowed only to those candidates who are 100% blind and not less than that. I was shocked after listening his conclusions, I enquired him that on which basis you can say so, do you have any written rule? He said that I have instructions from the public service commission. On my insistency he called one of his seniors (the representative of UP PSC) and confirmed me that only totally blind are allowed to use the scribe. After lots of arguments, I asked him to give me in writing under his seal that he is denying me for appearing in the examination on the basis that only candidates with 100% blindness are allowed to avail the service of the scribe. Accordingly he gave me this thing in writing after confirming his superior authority. After that I made a police report of violating various provisions of Persons disability Act and acting in access to powers granted him by the commission. The police officer interrogated the examination in-charge for half an our and asked him to produce any written rule which provide that only 100% blind are allowed to use the scribe. But he showed only the rule which provide that netra heen abhiyarthio ko lekhak ki swidha di jayegi, the facility of the scribe will be provided to the blind candidates. He was arguing that netra heen mean who can not see, since you have 70% disability, you are not netra heen. I told him that only word netra heen(blind) has been used and not poorn netra heen(complete blind). More over sec 2 of Persons with disability Act provides the definition of the blind which include the partial absance of the sight too. But he didn't agree and finally I was deprived of equal opportunity for appearing in the examination. -- Mohib Anwar Rafay Phone: +919 555 555 765 / +9192 7879 Register at the dedicated AccessIndia list for discussing accessibility of mobile phones / Tabs on: http://mail.accessindia.org.in/mailman/listinfo/mobile.accessindia_accessindia.org.in Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. Re: [AI] Again gross violation of right of equal opportunity for visually impaired
Hi Mohit it is quite sadden that u been deprived of equal opportunity but I appreciate your guts now you should imidataily consult with any lawyer and file a petition against those who did not allow you to exercise your rights and you should also write to CCPD regarding incident.until we will not focus on issues like that I think these bloody illiterate will exploit our kith and kins. On 5/11/15, Mohib Anwar Rafay mohibra...@gmail.com wrote: Hey all, yesterday(10th of May 2015) I was having my PCS priliminary exam conducted by Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission. Hi, Rajesh Sir, Ah, now your query is clearer. Does checking 'Automatic Say All on page load' check box achieve the desired effect? This setting is something similar to what you require, however, I am unsure if it applies to Microsoft Outlook as well. Try enabling that option if it isn't already, and revert back. Thanks. The Standing Committee on Social Justice and Empowerment, which examined the Right of Persons with Disabilities Bill, 2014 also suggested a disability budget on lines of SC and ST Sub Plan for persons with disabilities (PwDs). The Committee recommended the ministry to consider inclusion of these disorders too as disabilities specially kidney failure, blood cancer, diabetes Type-I (IDDM), which are long term diseases generally incurable and require substantive medical care and expenses throughout life, the report said. The Committee also desires that dwarfism should be considered as a distinct disability rather than a part of locomotor disability, since these people are able to perform all normal activities but need help as they are discriminated because of their height and other characteristics besides having other problems like travelling, driving as well as health-related problems. The report was tabled in Parliament on Thursday. The bill, which was introduced in Rajya Sabha by the previous Government in 2014 and referred to Standing Committee, had included 19 types of disability. The Committee also sought for fixing time frame for cases that would be dealt by the Disability Rights Tribunal. A specific time frame would be laid down for disposal of cases relating to PwDs in Special Courts or Disability Rights Tribunal (as suggested by the Committee). The normal time period may range from six months to one year maximum, the report said. It also recommended for increasing penalty for different types of offences including imposing fine up to Rs 10 lakh for discrimination in employment and revoking the licence of school and academic establishment for discrimination in schools. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/House-panel-for-expanding-disability-bracket/articleshow/47195962.cms?prtpage=1 Parliament Panel Bats For Setting Up of Disability Rights Tribunal *7-MAY-2015* *NEW DELHI :* Batting for a Disability Rights Tribunal, a parliamentary panel has recommended increased penalty for offences against persons with disabilities, and suggested bringing long term diseases including diabetes Type-I, kidney failure and blood cancer, besides dwarfism, under the bracket of disabilities. Wonder if anything has been mentioned explicitly in the report of the Standing Committee in this regard. This would be a great step for us to compete and grow up the organisational ladder rather than just getting stuck and stagnated. This is absolute rubbish. The concerned officials have to be pulled up and taken to task. -Original Message- From: AccessIndia [mailto:accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in] On Behalf Of akshun mahajan Sent: 11 May 2015 19:49 To: AccessIndia: a list for discussing accessibility and issues concerning the disabled. -- Mohib Anwar Rafay Phone: +919 555 555 765 / +9192 7879 Register at the dedicated AccessIndia list for discussing accessibility of mobile phones / Tabs on: http://mail.accessindia.org.in/mailman/listinfo/mobile.accessindia_accessin dia.org.in Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe.
