Re: [AI] suggest me scanner please

2015-06-06 Thread Pranav Lal
Hi,

If you are going to scan the books yourself, then you could look at a book edge
scanner. Plustek is a good brand for such devices. However, you may want to get
a product designed specifically for the blind. One such product is the Lex
reading system made by Vision Aid. Sparsh Products in India sells this product.
The product consists of a camera with OCR software. You place the book under the
camera, use the software to snap a picture of the page and the system begins
reading immediately. Another system is the Perl camera with Openbook made by
Freedom Scientific. Karishma Enterprises is the dealer for that product.
Karishma also deals with the Kurzweil 1000 which is another blindness specific
OCR. The reason I suggest OCR programs designed for the blind is that your son
will be able to scan his own books. This is not to say that you and he cannot
scan using Fine Reader from Abbyy and a book edge scanner. Camera scanners are
faster than flat bed scanners and they allow to scan read that is, you can begin
reading the document as you scan it.

Another alternative is to get the KNFB Reader app on an iPhone and use that to
scan. The problem however is that formatting may not be retained and getting the
book out of the phone involves the use of cloud services such as dropbox or
e-mail which can get fiddly.

Having said the above, you may want to get your son a bookshare membership and
contact NGOs like Saksham and the XRCVC. They may already have the books you
need scanned.

Re: [AI] Even NVDA not reading now - Funny

Hi,
Ekinath,
You may have accidentally disabled the reporting of clickable.
Go to NVDA menu > Preferences submenu > Document Formatting dialog and
the last check box is 'report if clickable'. Ensure that that check
box is checked.
If that check box is checked and NVDA still doesn't report the
mentioned content as clickable, I consider this unusual behaviour
worth reporting to the NVDA developers through its issue tracking
system, about which, I'll talk later.
Thanks.

Re: [AI] My trip to Dehradun – NIVH: Some Reflections

2015-06-06 Thread avinash shahi
Its interesting to see response from an Ex NIVHian, who seems to me
defending the rules of the institute, smiles

Yes you are right I mistakenly wrote 'of the' instead of 'for the'
Visually handicap'. However this should no way misguide researchers.
The subjectline of the mail gives enough clue to any serious
researcher that Its personal reflection and contents of the mail need
to be corroborated. Anyway, I don't wish to respond more on what one
should write with sincerety and responsibility. And do not even
consider it appropriate to pin-point your mail's bazaar logics and
sentences. However the National Institute for the 'visually handicap'
is marred with too-fold shortcomings which government needs to look in
to urgently. This particular thread itself provides enough questions
which speaks volumes about its current director's high-handedness. Its
fully funded by the government of India and we have all rights to
question its working. Why disability researchers are denied permission
to conduct interviews and surveys inside the campus is beyond one's
understanding.

You for unknown reasons misread my mail. Let me reproduce: "The
National Institute of Visually handicap (NIVH) is the autonomous
institution under MSJE which deals with the concerns of blind people".
My emphases is not on MSJE but on NIVH. I am skipping your other so
called corrective justification cause I find these subjective views
debatable. Before I end this thread from my end, I once again maintain
that the NIVH way of functioning needs a complete overhall in tuned
with time. Tranees and B.ed and M.ed students should be provided
internet facility on campus. There should be less restriction on the
movements of blind students and too much policing of the students
should be stopped. Braille and audio magazines should be dispatched
timely which is one of the biggest problems in NIVH. Finally my aim is
not to criticize NIVH but since the institute is the premium body for
looking after the interests of blind people, it should abreast itself
with current technology and should serve the blind students in the
best manner.

Re: [AI] My trip to Dehradun – NIVH: Some Reflections

2015-06-06 Thread Ritesh Tomer
Before commenting on the main issue (which is infrastructural
limitations in the NIVH premises for the blind), I consider that it
is important
to rectify the errors that have been made in the first mail of this thread.
vebelieSince this list has large readership, spreading across the
globe, people who read it must be having disparate purposes/
interests of their own for making reference to it. I believe that one
should write on such a big
platform with great sense of responsibility and sincerity. Some of
its readers could be researchers who would consider
this list a resource for collecting data for their study, errors like this may
 mislead them bitterly.
In clarifying my position I would say, that I am not speaking as an agent of
NIVH here, I am simply trying to put forward my opinion on the basis of my
experience of 10 years long with the institution.
Guys, ‘NIVH’ is written as "National institute of the visually handicap" in
that mail mistakenly. It is 'National institute for the visually
handicapped' rightly. We need to strive hard to make that institution
in tune with the mistakenly given title.
Further, it was also stated
in that mail that MSJE deals with the concerns of the blind people.
The sentence gives the impression that it takes up the concerns of
blind people exclusively,
which it doesn’t. It rather deals with the concerns of people across
the spectrum of disability.
Now I would come to the main point.
As far as the food and its quality in NIVH goes, again wrong information
is being spreaded. One could eat rice in desirable quantity with four
chapattis in lunch as well as in dinner. However, doctors suggest that
eating less in lunch is good for health. Admittedly yes, quality food
is a big concern there just like in many other
 institutions of the nation.
As far as free roaming/meeting of both boys and girls in and outside
the campus goes, it cannot be as smooth as it is here in Delhi. It is
important to understand that NIVH premises does have many big and
small organizations functioning within it. School up to 12th standard
is one of the main part of the institution. And more than 300 boys and
girls of teen age are studying there. Is it desirable to let them go
anywhere any time? Certainly not. Also there is a training center that
functions to educate/train adult blinds in NIVH premises. Many
of the trainees are accidently blind and therefore are not habitual of
moving with walking stick or other assistive devices. Some of them
come from far remote. Freeing them to
move anywhere may be problematic as they may collide with rushing
vehicles on the road and may get into further problems. NIVH premises is
surrounded by two of the busiest roads of Dehradun. They are Rajpur
road and the
newly constructed Nespila road. Commercial as well as private vehicles
keep on rushing day and night there as both the roads connect Doon
valley to Mansoori. These are some of the primary reason why people
are not permited to move anywhere 24 hours. As per serfing internet
goes, NIVH dehradun is having big and highly modernized computer labs
for school students as well as trainees. Helen Keller Bhavan is an
administrative building. And the vi-fi facility has been provided to
the bodies associated with administration only. Sharing its password
and id with students is not possible. Yes they may think of extending
vi-fi facility over the campus. But again the same issue of sharing it
with small kids would again come.

I would urge you to pl visit school building as well. I did not find
any reflection on school building as yet.
Cheers.

[AI] URGENT Help required in Siemens EPBX Operations through Computer

2015-06-06 Thread Pavan Kumar Bolar
Dear All,

I am working in Corporation Bank, Head Office at Mangalore

Bank has recently upgraded the Bank's EPBX which is now operated
through computer. One of my partly sited Coleagues who is a telephone
operator is unable to operate to EPBX after its upgradation recently.
The new EPBX details are as under:-

Details of EPABX is

Siemens ACVIN IP MQ V2R4_4_0 Part No. P30152-P1110-P20

Now she is unable to view the details of incomming call number and
caller details as the font is very small. Consequently her day to day
functioning of EPBX is adversely affected.

Also, the Telephone line call output is through USB head phones
connected to the computer.

It will be great help if anyone can answer the following queries:-

1. Inbuilt TTS in Siemens EPBX

2. Increasing font size in Siemens EPBX

3. Compatibility of JAWS with EPBX.

4. Compatibility of Magic with EPBX

5. Any other solution

Request you to please let me know at the earliest.
