[AI] Using an alternative OCR with the Lex camera
Hi all, In the event that some of you have bought the Lex system from VisionAid (the local dealer is Sparsh), you can use DocuScan Plus from Serotek with the camera that comes with the Lex system. Hats off to VisionAid for not locking its hardware. The advantage of DSP is that you can use both a flatbed scanner and a camera with it. Yes, I had to dust off my Plustek Opticbook 3600 scanner the other day. I had a business card to scan. I tried it with the Lex camera and was told no text found. This is where I goofed. I formulated the premise that there was an issue with the camera focus so it was time for the old flatbed. I had to use compatibility mode to update the drivers for the Plustek Opticbook 3600 on windows 10. Once that was done, I realized that I did not have any OCR program to use it with. My copy of Fine Reader was long expired and I do not own anything else. I have had my eye on DocuScan Plus for a while so gave it a spin. No go, still no text. I saw the Lex camera listed in the image source and tried it. Bingo, I got text. The experience is not as smooth as with the Lex software but it works. As for the business card, I had to use sighted assistance. The card is of an architect and she has used some fancy fonts. Time to file bug reports with VisionAid and perhaps Serotek though I doubt they can do much since the problem is with the OCR component. But it is still weekend and the Dialogue does not decline in the world. So I bring some interesting D-news for you all. 1. And letâs start from an unusual place, Switzerland. Long time I do not share news about Dialogue with Time. During the last days we had the opening of Dialogue with Time exhibition in Bern. [AI] e-mail lists for Mac OS X accessibility
Dear all, Having temporarily got a Macbook to play around a bit with, I would like to join some official Mac OS X support groups Apple might have created, or the community may have. The only point of reference I have at present is Apple Vis (www.applevis.com). I was aware that there was an Apple Vis mailing list in existence too, but was that not for i OS accessibility related discussion, or does that encompass Mac OS X accessibility topics too? If you are aware of any Mac OS X support e-mail lists I should subscribe, please let me know their joining/subscription procedural details. Anyways, I will be perusing through the Apple Vis website now to see what I can learn from it... Dear all, We at Adventures Beyond Barriers Foundation, wish to get nominations from female visually impaired and blind runners who would like to participate in the upcoming marathon, Pinkathon, in Mumbai scheduled for Sunday December13th. There will be more then 10,000 women runners participating from the main stream community. We will pair the visually impaired runners alongside professional marathon runners who will act as running partners and coaches. All registration and other arrangements will be taken care of by our organization, Adventures Beyond Barriers Foundation. the marathon distances one can participate in are 3,5 and 10 KM. s, with seperate podium finish for each category. Please contact on +919890993825 to register or for enquiries. Appreciate if you could also help share this information with other groups and individuals with disabilities. WHY DO WE CONDUCT marathons FOR PERSON'S WITH DISABILITIES and Able bodied together? You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation. While our main focus is on the sport, the truth is, sports are simply the tool for accomplishing a bigger goal, to bring hope, inspiration and the joys of achievement to Persons with Disabilities. Persons with Disabilities run for many reasons and with many goals, to improve physical strength; to build confidence. But along the run something else happens that few expect, but everyone cherishes. It is the sense of friendship, encouragement, and community that people find while running. It is our belief that with support, nurturing, and training, Persons with Disabilities can participate and succeed in mainstream sports. We believe that sports help us understand different people and surroundings better. Being confronted with a challenge and then overcoming it by creative ways is a great way to increase confidence and it creates lasting ties with each other. Running together encourages empathy, discovering more about yourself and your partner. It creates awareness at levels that help breaks stereotypes and bring about social transformation. Running is a great way for Persons with Disabilities to mingle in the mainstream. Many of them, especially in India, struggle with establishing contact with the rest of the community and often live isolated lives. Sport helps them break free of these barriers, engage in the outside world, realize their capabilities and create friendships. It helps their self belief, helps communicate their view of world, and helps to think of themselves as change-makers. ABOUT ADVENTURES BEYOND BARRIERS- Adventures beyond Barriers Foundation is a Not for Profit organisation, to promote adventure sports for persons with Disability. The underlying philosophy is that “You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.” We aim to engage able bodied individuals together with Persons with Disabilities, in adventure sports and allied activities in a safe and sustainable way and to bring them both together; in a journey such that they help and learn from each other. We hope to achieve this by creating appropriate conditions to establish interpersonal contact, and by enabling communication with one another, with a view to understand and appreciate different points of views involving each other’s ways of life. As a result of this new appreciation and understanding, issues of stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination between the groups should reduce and lead to long term social transformation. This will also help get persons with disability more visibility, which helps create awareness towards inclusion and accessibility. Yes. LV are, as a rule, preferred. I had vehemently championed for separate reservation to these two categories, or rather separate reservation for every disability, moderate and severe. For a while, it was included in the draft as well. However, the point does not seem to have made it into the final version. सादर / With thanks & Regards राजेश आसुदानी Rajesh Asudani सहायक महाप्रबन्धक AGM बाजार आसूचना ईकाई MIU भारतीय रिजर्व बैंक Reserve Bank of India नागपुर Nagpur 0712 2806846 President VIBEWA Co-Moderator VIB-India A-pilll = Action coupled with Positivity, Interest, Love, Logic and laughter. -Original Message- From: AccessIndia [mailto:accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in] On Behalf Of Vedprakash Sent: Friday, November 27, 2015 5:08 PM To: 'AccessIndia: a list for discussing accessibility and issues concerning the disabled.'; 'jnuvision' Subject: Re: [AI] RPD Bill Update: Diabetes, cancer off bill One more important point needs attention. Sources in the ministry of social justice and empowerment said it was possibly the first since the 1995 Disability Act was framed that the government and the sector appeared to be on the same page. "We have conveyed to the committee that we wouldn't be able to include diabetes and other such things under the bill as they are not disabilities, but medical conditions. Even the disability sector is with us on this issue," a senior ministry official said. The Rights of Persons with Disability Bill, aimed at amending the 1995 law, was introduced in the Rajya Sabha in 2013 before being referred to the panel following disagreements. In May this year, the committee, in a report to Parliament, recommended that "prominent and permanent disabilities" like diabetes, blood cancer and kidney failure be listed in the bill, following demands from a section of the disability sector. The House panel also suggested that dyslexia (reading disorder), dysgraphia (writing disorder), dyscalculia (difficulty in learning or comprehending arithmetic), dyspraxia (a condition that affects co-ordination), dwarfism, epilepsy, dementia and paralysis of the limbs caused by injuries to the spinal cord or other reasons be included. Following the committee's report, dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia and dwarfism were included in the draft bill. "The broad category of chronic neurological conditions includes paralysis, spinal injury, stroke and dementia. Of course, a social sector bill cannot ever be all-encompassing, it will evolve," the ministry official said. The ministry has also redefined "discrimination" in accordance with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability, which calls for unconditional right to equality on a par with others. In an earlier draft, the right to equality had been curtailed under Section 3(3). It said the right against discrimination existed, "unless" it could be shown that the "impugned act or omission is a proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim". "The government has accepted most of our demands. We demanded that the bill follow the definitions of the UNCRPD and the government has done it," said S.K. Rungta of the National Federation of the Blind. Rungta had protested against the amended bill two years ago, eventually pushing it to the committee. In the new draft, the government has expanded the definition of disabilities to include autism spectrum disorder, chronic neurological conditions, haemophilia, leprosy-cured persons, locomotor disability, mental illness, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, thalassaemia and sickle-cell disease, a hereditary blood disorder. The ministry has also included a section on women with disabilities, recognising equal rights, including those to reproduction and family planning. "These are positive changes. [AI] Disability and Intolerance: Do we ever think?
There is an interlinkage between disability and intolerance in India. Do we ever hear any hue and cry? From the family members to the parliamentarians leave no stone unturned in expressing contempt for our existence. Some say ‘we are burden on them’, others scorn by excoriating our visibility in the public life. We are invisible sufferers cause we don’t have political actors to act in the theatre of Indian polity. Re: [AI] RPD Bill Update: Diabetes, cancer off bill
One more important point needs attention. Low vision and visually candidates fall in the same category in the new bill, which may create problem for totally blind individuals. In Delhi Government schools, such problems have come to notice. For the principal's post just one year back, intensity of visual impairment and not the merit was considered. Exciting Offers to Grab Vedprakash Sharma -Original Message- From: AccessIndia [mailto:accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in] On Behalf Of avinash shahi Sent: Friday, November 27, 2015 2:50 PM To: jnuvision ; accessindia Subject: [AI] RPD Bill Update: Diabetes, cancer off bill The Bill is listed in the business of parliament for winter session, we could hope it functions smoothly? http://www.telegraphindia.com/1151127/jsp/nation/story_55361.jsp Govt rejects House panel suggestions on disability Ananya Sengupta New Delhi, Nov. 26: The government has junked a parliamentary panel's recommendations to include diabetes and cancer in a disability bill pending for two years now, finally agreeing with most stakeholders that these were medical conditions and not disabilities. The ministry has also included a section on women with disabilities, recognising equal rights, including those to reproduction and family planning. "These are positive changes. However, I don't know if it was wise to delay the bill for two years when we could have pushed for these amendments after the bill had been passed," said Javed Abidi, of the National Centre for Promotion of Employment of Disabled People, who had supported the 2013 legislation. -- Avinash Shahi Doctoral student at Centre for Law and Governance JNU Register at the dedicated AccessIndia list for discussing accessibility of mobile phones / Tabs on: http://mail.accessindia.org.in/mailman/listinfo/mobile.accessindia_accessind ia.org.in Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. While in braille display, only one particular line depending on the number of cells is displayed. For instance, with this braille display, at a time, you can have access to 40 cells line area. After you complete reading this line, you have to get the next line or if you have to repeat the previous line, then you have to get previous line. Here the arrow keys come in picture. Of course, there are multiple uses of arrow keys as you work in your pc as navigational keys. If you do not wish to keep changing your reading navigation with arrow keys manually, then there is one feature called auto scroll in which you can set the timings and speed at which you want the next lines appear automatically across your fingers. [AI] RPD Bill Update: Diabetes, cancer off bill
The Bill is listed in the business of parliament for winter session, we could hope it functions smoothly? http://www.telegraphindia.com/1151127/jsp/nation/story_55361.jsp Govt rejects House panel suggestions on disability Ananya Sengupta New Delhi, Nov. 26: The government has junked a parliamentary panel's recommendations to include diabetes and cancer in a disability bill pending for two years now, finally agreeing with most stakeholders that these were medical conditions and not disabilities. However, I don't know if it was wise to delay the bill for two years when we could have pushed for these amendments after the bill had been passed," said Javed Abidi, of the National Centre for Promotion of Employment of Disabled People, who had supported the 2013 legislation. -- Avinash Shahi Doctoral student at Centre for Law and Governance JNU Register at the dedicated AccessIndia list for discussing accessibility of mobile phones / Tabs on: http://mail.accessindia.org.in/mailman/listinfo/mobile.accessindia_accessindia.org.in Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe.
