[AI] Learning maths and econometrics on the lap top
Hi Guys, How do I read maths using word or something as easy as that? Is it possible to hear equations produced in Microsoft word or powerpoint with the Microsoft equation editor? Someone suggested me Nemeth Braille but I hve no idea about it and don’t want to get into it as it will make things laborious even though I am good at Braille. I seek some solution which will make my learning in econometrics easier on the lap top itself. Do please let know step by step as I am doing it for the first time. Thanks a ton Ekinath -- *** "I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something I can do. Hi Ekinath, Look at MathML and NVDA's math add-on. The last I heard, equations produced by the equation editor were inaccessible but equations produced with MathType are accessible. [AI] Best alternative to capcha
Dear friends, Can someone suggest the best alternative to a capcha on a web site? If a weffb site needs to have capcha, what can be done to make an accessible arrangement for visually impaired. Recently I visited the income tax site where the audio is very clear to understand. OTP is another option. I need other alternatives along with examples where reputed web sites are following it. -- G. [AI] With disability bill stuck in PMO, hope fades for its passage in House
This TOI news published today informing us that MSJE sent the Bill to the cabinet on 26 November However Economic Times news appeared late in the first week of December reported it is yet to be submitted to the cabinet for approval. Why this contradiction? what's going on there? http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/With-disability-bill-stuck-in-PMO-hope-fades-for-its-passage-in-House/articleshow/50212170.cms It is one bill on which an all-party consensus would be available. It pertains to the rights of millions of disabled, the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Bill. Yet, at a time when it is struggling to get a consensus on several bills, the government failed to get this one to the Rajya Sabha in time for it to be considered in the winter session. . . Much to the disappointment of the disability sector, the bill is currently stuck in the prime minister's office (PMO) where it was sent after the ministry of social justice and empowerment sent it to the cabinet secretariat on November 26. . . The cabinet meets every week, so two meetings have gone by without the Bill being put up for clearance. With the Bill stuck in the PMO, ministry officials and the disability sector have lost all hope of it making it to this session. . . "If the ministry sent the cabinet note on November 26, why has it taken so long? Now, it has been 20 days. It was naturally our expectation that the government would take up the new Disabilities Bill as a very high priority and fast track it, especially considering the fact that this month we celebrated the World Disability Day and the 20th Anniversary of the vastly outdated Disability Act 1995," said Javed Abidi of the National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP). . -- Avinash Shahi Doctoral student at Centre for Law and Governance JNU Register at the dedicated AccessIndia list for discussing accessibility of mobile phones / Tabs on: http://mail.accessindia.org.in/mailman/listinfo/mobile.accessindia_accessindia.org.in Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. [AI] state bank internet banking comes up with captcha
hey folks, with at most disapointment i'd like to share instead of things making more accessible for visually impaired, banks are making even more difficult for us. from today, state bank of india and all of its associates internet banking portal requireds a captcha to be entered while login. to my surprise, even jaws OCR is not able to recognize the captcha. at the same time, i do consider the fact its been done to get more security for the customers and to get rid of fraudsters. however, no provisions have been made for visually impaireds. no audio captcha is there, no login OTP is there the way IRCTC has implimented. so what should be done to make it accessible for us Amit Pahuja 9650519193 State Bank of Travancore Register at the dedicated AccessIndia list for discussing accessibility of mobile phones / Tabs on: http://mail.accessindia.org.in/mailman/listinfo/mobile.accessindia_accessindia.org.in Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. [AI] Important: Revision of building code for the disabled to focus on accessibility
Any blind accessibility expert will join Mr Abidi and Mrs Agarwal in the proposed meeting scheduled on 18 December? If not, sector needs to think... http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Revision-of-building-code-for-the-disabled-to-focus-on-accessibility/articleshow/50212184.cms The disability affairs department has swung into action to help ensure that the National Building Code (NBC), which is being revised, will ensure accessibility for the disabled across all public spaces. A meeting of all stakeholders including the director general of the Bureau of Indian Standards, in charge of the code revision, and accessibility experts from the disability sector has been called on December 18. "To ensure that all accessibility related standards are incorporated in the National Building Code (NBC), the secretary, the department of empowerment of persons with disabilities would like to have a detailed discussion with the director general of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and senior officials of the ministry of consumer affairs," stated the letter issued by joint secretary of the department, Mukesh Jain. It is expected that the meeting will be attended by a joint secretary from the urban development ministry as well as Javed Abidi of the National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP), Anjlee Agarwal of Samarthyam, an organisation working to ensure accessible environments, and other accessibility experts. . . The Times of India had reported last week how several parts of the draft of the revised NBC did not include accessibility features. The disability sector has been demanding that every part of the code ought to be reviewed keeping accessibility in mind, and not just the part containing provisions relating to a barrier-free environment. However, BIS officials in charge of the revision have been saying that it had to be completed in a time-bound manner and that the revised code "is to be published urgently as per the mandate of Government of India". They said that any comments on the draft had to reach them before December 24. The department's letter referred to the prime minister's speech read out at the launch of the Accessible India Campaign which said that it was a "mission to change the physical and virtual infrastructure of the country so as to make it more accessible and inclusive for PwDs." He added that the campaign would pave the way for equal rights and participation of the disabled in all community activities. . . "The revision is happening after 10 years. We cannot let go of this opportunity to do a comprehensive review and catch up with lost time. Why can't they delay it by a few more months? Is the deadline more important than ensuring that everything built in this country will be accessible from now on?" asked Abidi. . Re: [AI] Making Partition on Windows Laptop
hi plz check this Windows 7, Windows 8, 8.1, 10, and Vista include a built-in functionality in Disk Management to shrink and expand partitions. No more 3rd party utilities needed! It’s worth noting that many third-party utilities will be more feature-rich, but you can do the very basic stuff in Windows without adding anything new. To get to this utility, open up Control Panel, and type in partition into the search box.. you’ll immediately see the link show up: If you are in Windows 8 or 8.1 you’ll need to use the Start Screen search. If you are in Windows 10, just use the Start Menu or the Control Panel search. Either way, the same thing will come up. list end Recommended byOutbrain How to Shrink a Partition In the Disk Management screen, just right-click on the partition that you want to shrink, and select “Shrink Volume” from the menu. In the Shrink dialog, you will want to enter the amount you want to shrink by, not the new size. For example, if you want to shrink your 50gb partition by roughly 10gb so that it will now be roughly 40gb, enter 1 into the box: How to Extend a Partition In the Disk Management screen, just right-click on the partition that you want to shrink, and select “Extend Volume” from the menu. On this screen, you can specify the amount that you want to increase the partition by. In this case, I’m going to extend it back to the roughly 50GB size that it was before. Re: [AI] Girls and Women with Disabilities: share your ways of grooming and tasks like make-up
Now that's overreaching oneself, as a group, me thinks. Beauty, is visual beauty as it is understood generally. So, running beauty parlors by blind is like saying, as NAB did on its homepage: "You know blind can drive!!"" Let us not pretend, and accept that we cannot see. I would surely like to coin new terms for auditory, tactual, olfactory and beauty of other senses, though. -Original Message- From: AccessIndia [mailto:accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in] On Behalf Of avinash shahi Sent: Wednesday, December 16, 2015 3:49 PM To: AccessIndia: a list for discussing accessibility and issues concerning the disabled. Subject: Re: [AI] Girls and Women with Disabilities: share your ways of grooming and tasks like make-up Your mail generated an interest in me to look for beauty-parlour runned by blind women in the country or in abroad. However I found no such centres in India. By the way Centre for Blind women in Hauz Khas Delhi once conducted a workshop along with famous beauty magnet Shahnas Hussain. You can take more details from Shalini Khanna. If blind people can own a restaurant in Kathmandu and fully runn with all blind waitors and chef, time is not far we will have beauty-saloons/parlours owned and runned by blind girls and boys. And what I found more interesting out of your query is that a legal firm is keen to explore ways to groom one's body personality. I further wonder why you have excluded the blind men from the survey? Aren't they so obsessed about how they look and apply themselves in the public? [AI] Paper of Interest: Toward a History of the Blind in Spain | Sutherland-Meier
Abstract This paper uses archival documents, literature, and art to sketch the history of the blind in Spain. Traditionally, certain occupations, such as singing and playing musical instruments, saying prayers and selling chapbooks were reserved for the blind. Spanish artists and writers have portrayed the blind engaged in these occupations. Starting in the Middle Ages, the blind established powerful brotherhoods through which they controlled these professions. The changing roles that the blind played in the creation, production, performance and sale of popular literature known as literatura de cordel show their successful adaptation to an emerging print culture. The situation of the blind today and the success of the National Organization of the Spanish Blind (ONCE) are also discussed. I'm below pasting one interesting section for those who have difficulty in opening the URL for slow internet connection The Blind and Literatura de Cordel In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, as printing became more widespread and the production of pliegos sueltos (literally "loose sheets" or chapbooks) increased, the role of the blind changed. Oral performance of the kind observed in the literary examples—singing ballads and saying prayers and litanies—remained an important source of income for them. Increasingly, however, they moved into selling ballads and other genres of literatura de cordel (Rodríguez Marín, 1905; Álvarez Barrientos, 1987; García de Enterría, 1973). Literally "literature on a string," the term encompasses various genres of cheap, popular literature printed in pliegos sueltos and most often sold on the streets. The name derives from the custom of hanging chapbooks from a string so potential buyers could examine them. The literary history of early modern Spain provides ample evidence of the blind as authors, performers and vendors of literatura de cordel (Caro Baroja, 1969). One subgenre of this literature is so linked to the blind that for centuries it has been known as the romance de ciego, or blindman's ballad. Cervantes's exemplary novel La gitanilla (1613), Lope de Vega's play Santiago el Verde (1615), and the anonymous Estebanillo González (1646), all contain references to the blind selling ballads (Caro Baroja, 1969; Rodríguez Moñino, 1976b; Sutherland, 1991). While it was an extension of their well-established role as performers, this shift marked the beginning of one of the great ironies of the history of the blind in Spain: for over three centuries, their major profession was selling printed texts, merchandise that they themselves had neither access to nor use for. Works by blind poets survive in pliegos sueltos from as early as the second half of the sixteenth century. The titles on many chapbooks mention the author's name and his blindness; he is said to be "privado de vista" [deprived of sight] or "privado de vista corporal" [deprived of bodily sight]. A 1570 chapbook from Valladolid containing "amusing verses and jokes to sing and play on the vihuela" is a good example: Coplas y Chistes muy graciosos para cantar y tañer al tono de la viguela. Ahora nueuamente hechas por Gaspar de la Cintera, priuado de la vista, natural de Ubeda, y vezino de Granada.6 The author, Gaspar de la Cintera, had a successful career as a poet and performer; this is just one of his works that survives (Rodríguez Moñino, 1976b; Sánchez Pérez, n.d.). This title not only tells us he was blind but also that he was born in the Andalusian town of Ubeda and lived in Granada. Two of the most well-studied blind poets from this period are Cristóbal Bravo (Rodriguez-Moñino, 1976a) and Mateo de Brizuela (Catedra, 2002). Bravo was from Córdoba; his most famous composition is El testamento del gallo [The Rooster's Last Will and Testament]. In this ballad, the rooster leaves parts of his body to others, each bequest made with a decidedly humorous end in mind. Bravo also authored a similar piece, El testamento de la zorra [The Vixen's Last Will and Testament]. Both ballads were enormously popular and were reprinted well into the nineteenth century. They inspired many imitations and, eventually, spread into the oral tradition as well (Pérez Vidal, 1947). Mateo de Brizuela wrote one of the most commercially-successful examples of literatura de cordel of all times, La renegada de Valladolid [The Renegade of Valladolid]. A best-seller for centuries, the poem tells the story of Agueda, a woman from Valladolid, who is taken captive, marries a Muslim ruler, and in response to his entreaties, renounces Christianity. Years later, a Christian captive (a priest) is brought to her house as a slave. The two later discover they are sister and brother, and Agueda repents. The second part of the poem recounts her penance on a mountain near Rome and her conversion of her two children to Christianity. The oldest extant copy of Part I is from 1585, though Cátedra (2002) believes Part I first appeared around 1581 since the oldest
Re: [AI] Important: Revision of building code for the disabled to focus on accessibility
I have invited myself for this meeting! Is there anyone else in Delhi who might want to attend? If so, please let me know today before 5 p.m. at 011 26472581/2 Best, George -Original Message- From: AccessIndia [mailto:accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in] On Behalf Of avinash shahi Sent: 17 December 2015 12:20 To: accessindia; jnuvision Subject: [AI] Important: Revision of building code for the disabled to focus on accessibility Any blind accessibility expert will join Mr Abidi and Mrs Agarwal in the proposed meeting scheduled on 18 December? If not, sector needs to think... http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Revision-of-building-code-for-the- disabled-to-focus-on-accessibility/articleshow/50212184.cms The disability affairs department has swung into action to help ensure that the National Building Code (NBC), which is being revised, will ensure accessibility for the disabled across all public spaces. Is the deadline more important than ensuring that everything built in this country will be accessible from now on?" asked Abidi. . . -- Avinash Shahi Doctoral student at Centre for Law and Governance JNU Register at the dedicated AccessIndia list for discussing accessibility of mobile phones / Tabs on: http://mail.accessindia.org.in/mailman/listinfo/mobile.accessindia_accessin dia.org.in Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. Re: [AI] Girls and Women with Disabilities: share your ways of grooming and tasks like make-up
Hi Avinash And All, 1. This training is not part of my profession. 2. The students I am talking about do not have exposure to social settings as you or I will have. Since I have studied in a blind school, I do understand this potential challenge, (which you will understand too), and apart from other support which I am working on to empower the upcoming students for using research tools, technologies, potential challenges of formatting and other aspects in our sector, this is another aspect I am working on. Everyone so doubtful about me asking this question may read this blog here (though it does not capture the workshop I will be working on): http://idialaw.com/blog/idia-launches-idap-team/ 3. Why I haven't included males is simply because I have myself done such courses, and I can share my own practical experiences which after discussions with many individuals is on the same lines, so I really didn't feel the need of inputs on those aspects at this time. But this area is something I was clueless about (although I am better informed after discussion with my mom on this and after few good individuals who have helped me understand the basics). And even then if anyone or you feel you can contribute something, then you are more than welcome to write to me. If people on the list do take this question in a negative way, then let's stop this threat here itself, I would not want all of us to lose the sight of the topic and start counter arguing with each other which will result in nothing qualitative. Although I do not get the reason of looking at this e-mail with a critical view. Regards, -- Amar Jain. Re: [AI] FYI: 'Disabled rights Bill to be put before cabinet in a day or two'
Avinash, This is to rectify your statement that there is no guideline for media in India. Quite some time ago, I cannot remember the year at this moment, Rehabilitation Council of India published a "Media Style Guide" which was available free of cost from their office and was also there in their website. But I do not think there was much discussions on this around then as research/discussions/debates which are important for the sector to grow, was much less those days.. I know about it as we used it for our first media studies and I still have a print copy of the same. Re: [AI] FYI: 'Disabled rights Bill to be put before cabinet in a day or two'
It is important to remember here that Dalit movement have discarded the term Harijan which was conferred upon them and did not came as a demand of the Dalit people themselves. They prefer the term Dalit because it is their identity and there's history of discrimination about same. Similarly womens movement do not like the idea of alleviating women to "Devi" - one of the slogans we use in womens movement is "We do not want to be Devi We do not want to be Dashi, but we just want to remain human beings" (rough translation from vernacular). However well-intentioned the Prime Minister was when he used the word, it should be open to debate from disability groups. Re: [AI] Paytm
Hi Mukesh! indeed you are right but that m.paytm.com does not work at least in latest browsers such as firefox and internet explorer. well, coming to make it accessible there is an add-on for mozilla firefox "user agent" which can turn your browser in to mobile browser where you can open all sites in a mobile friendly environment. in the earlier days in fact, youtube and and paytm were opening by default when we input m.site.com but now apart from facebook no site will be opened in the mobile environment. apart from this paytm you can get benefited from the youtube if you install real player which streams video in the mobile quality. Many thanks Mam for pointing to the RCI guidelines for media reporting about disability issues. Re: [AI] Girls and Women with Disabilities: share your ways of grooming and tasks like make-up
Your mail generated an interest in me to look for beauty-parlour runned by blind women in the country or in abroad. Re: [AI] Girls and Women with Disabilities: share your ways of grooming and tasks like make-up
Hi Mam, I wanted to discuss this over e-mail so that (i) I could take notes from people's responses so that I can capture that in my notes for the workshop I'm preparing for; and (ii) I was hoping that you can share your views either on the list or personally given that you are someone who is very helpful and guiding person. Nevertheless, if you are not comfortable discussing these personal things on e-mails, it's totally understandable. Don't take it too hard, just thought you can be one of those who could potentially guide.
