which all so called disability right activists should ponder upon.
Why not shift the focus to something constructive like demanding accessibility?

BENGALURU: Booking cabs, buying food and making
payments online seem like they're just a swipe
and a tap away, but for millions of disabled Indians, these
apps are not designed for them to use.

According to a study conducted by
 Centre for Internet and Society
last month, many of the most-commonly used
mobile apps for food delivery, online payments,
grocery shopping and transportation were not accessible to
the visually challenged. The study covered 22 apps.

The 2011 census puts the number of disabled in
the country at 26 million, while advocacy groups
say the real figure is closer to 150 million.Last year,
India recorded nearly nine billion downloads of
 mobile-based applications last year.

"The national policy for universal electronic
accessibility says that all IT products and

government mobile based applications like My

 Narendra Modi
's official app found them to be severely
lacking. The illiterate, aged and those not
proficient in English would also struggle with the apps, the study
found. The guidelines for government websites
laid out accessibility standards in 2009. The
2013 national policy on universal electronic accessibility
clearly upholds equal rights "ensuring that
 accessibility standards and guidelines and
universal design concepts are adopted and adhered to."

However, most commonly-used apps fail to follow
this. All 22 of the apps studied were privately
owned but not all were fully compliant with universal standards.
Of taxi-hailing apps Meru, Ola and Uber, only
Uber was completely accessible to the disabled.
The others had mis-labelled or unlabeled buttons and graphics.

do not carry papers with them.

When computer is being used, screen reader (NVDA absolutely works!) has to made

This is very serious case and need to be taken up ..

1.Lots of goverment undertaking companies don't take VI ...

2. If any special drive is there then they place a exam format as like that
VI can't pass.
Ex.steno shorthand test on notepad and they on Computer .Instead
providing mobile or other recorders for steno now a days everywhere
mobile recorder is used by steno ...normal people are also doing that...

3. Typing on Computer ...They check each and every space Instead
typed materials ..

All I am saying they are only looking the way to filtered out to VI
candidate Instead thinking to hire them actually ..

Re: [AI] Most apps inaccessible for disabled

2016-11-22 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
It is not bashing.
It is pointing out.
If most of the things still online are inaccessible, then government needs to
make at least its own services fully accessible.

Its on you if you see it half empty or half full. Though I agree few
of the apps are really unmanageable but situation is certainly getting
better. If the world has to accommodate us then we should also deal
with it with pacience, Bashing isn't the only solution.

[AI] A slightly difficult question

2016-11-22 Thread Penny Tony
Dear All,
Someone was asking me for suggestions for a very elderly man(90 years
old) who has lost his sight and hearing as well.
He was someone who liked to have contact with people and to always
keep busy doing something. Inspite of his age, his mind is still
active but he is now restricted to his bed as his caretakers don't
want him to move around since they are afraid that he will hurt
himself.
One of his friends however who feels very concerned about him going
through this, was asking me if there was anything that the elderly man
could do that he could occupy his mind and time with.
Would anyone have any suggestions on this age related disability concern?
Sincerely
Penny

It should not happen this way. You have an option on the INB page for
customer complaints. Lodge a complaint under the relevant subject
through that portal. Alternatively, I think you can register for
internet banking at ATM. Let me check it out.

Tap-ping to help the blind. Walking around is one of the toughest
things for a visually challenged person. Even when they're using a
cane. To help them get past this, young innovator Krishna Sai Inkoolu,
from Anakapalli in Visakhapatnam invented 'Taparch Footwear', which
helps them walk sans the stick. This 24-year-old who studied
Industrial Engineering at Gitam University designed a mechanism with
an embedded electronic circuit that senses the existence of obstacles
in the path and communicates it to the visually challenged person with
a 'tap', while they're walking — helping them stay safe. And that's
how the shoes came to be. "Since the initial stages, I always focussed
on proving that my concept would change the lives of the visually
challenged, rather than concentrating on the final design and
manufacturing. Source:

DETERMINATION TRUMPS DISABILITY. Visually impaired runner Gulab
Bhandari revealed that dogged determination is the overriding factor
when it comes to completing half marathon despite the obvious
challenges people with disability confront. A regular at Airtel Delhi
Half Marathon since 2010, the 48-year-old visually impaired half
marathoner said he has found out ways to overcome dependency while
practising for the race, mainly because of his resoluteness. "I
practice in my balcony for 30 minutes daily as no one can hold my hand
as a guide daily and make me run. It's only for the past one month
that I have been running alongside a partner. Ultimately,
determination gets you going," he said. Gulab added it's not really
hard to lure a guide who can run 21 kilometers along with him when it
finally matters. "My guide majorly has been my niece who is just 25.
So he catches up with my pace quite easily. Plus, even when he is not
around for company, sympathetic co-runners lend me a hand. All I have
to do is follow the sound of their shoes and react accordingly," he
added. Source:
