Re: [AI] Genetic screening for detection of disability

2019-06-11 Thread Srinivasu Chakravarthula
Almost every hospital would be able to do this screening. We got it done at
Manipal Hospitals in Bangalore. We got it done not because we would want to
prevent if there are chances but wanted to know chances and get ourselves
and family prepared. Irrespective of what the result could be, there will
be no 100% guarantee that result is true. When we were expecting our first
child, there was a 40% chances that our child might born with
down-syndrome. But fortunately, that has bcome a false alarm.

Personally, I feel while there is an option to adopt a child, experience of
own child is entirely different. Of course, opinions could differ.

Feel free to call me for any further conversation.

Re: [AI] AI help regarding portable copy of NVDA.

2019-06-11 Thread Amiyo Biswas

While NVDA is running, press insert+n for NVDA menu.

Arrow down to tools menu and open it by using the right arrow.

Arrow down to create portable copy option and press enter on it.

It will open the create portable copy dialogue box. Just follow the prompts.
This is a standard dialogue box with self-explanatory options.

At the end an NVDA folder will be created at the specified location. This
folder will contain a file named NVDA.exe. Pressing enter on it will start
NVDA.

[AI] Breast cancer detection training for blind women to be expanded to more Indian cities

2019-06-11 Thread Ramya Venkitesh
In Story of the Week, we look at the Discovering Hands programme in India
under which visually impaired women are
being trained to detect breast cancer lumps by touch. This year the
programme is being expanded to Bengaluru and Kashmir.

Hasiba, 25 years old, had signed up for a computer training course at the
National Association for the Blind Center of Blind Women and Disabilities in
2016 when she heard about the Discovering Hands programme that was soon to
be launched.

Under the programme, visually impaired women over 20 are trained as medical
tactile examiners (MTEs), a role that requires them to detect lumps or
nodules in the patient's breasts using their sense of touch.

Hasiba, a late blind who once nurtured dreams of becoming a nurse, was
instantly drawn to the idea. "At first, I felt very shy and quite
uncomfortable about touching the bare bodies of other women. So, to begin
with the training involved us touching women through their clothes".

Gradually Hasiba got used to the idea and finished the nine-month training
programme successfully. Of this, three months were spent interning at the
Medanta Hospital. She is now working at the C K Birla Hospital in New Delhi,
where there's a large research underway into this project. Read on

Re: [AI] Guidelines for exemption from drawing graphs and diagrams in exams/visual based questions: urgently needed

2019-06-11 Thread Kriya Jain
Ours is an Autonomous college affiliated to Osmania University, Hyderabad.
I also tried to find out from students from other affiliated colleges as to
how things are for them. They say there is actually no clarity about
scribes and the evaluation of answers with visual inputs. The scribe issue
is mostly left at the discretion of the centre and about evaluation, no
one knows what happens.
If you can find out some rules, it will help us.
If nothing about osmania university is found, I would like to know what
other universities are following.

Thanks

Hello Kanchan ji,

The below notice issued by the Union Grants Commission (UGC) is mandatorily
applicable on all universities.
This notice provides for compliance of the 2018 guidelines for conducting
written examination of persons with benchmark disabilities.
Please tell the college/ university authorities that graphs are very well
covered in the point dealing with ‘questions requiring visual inputs’.
The guidelines are available at:
https://www.ugc.ac.in/pdfnews/7348678_Guidelines_Exam-Divyangjan-JAN-2019.pdf

Please feel free to email me/ call on +91 8320964462 if you need more help with
this.

Thanks.

[AI] Guidelines for exemption from drawing graphs and diagrams in exams/visual based questions: urgently needed

2019-06-11 Thread Kriya Jain
Hi accessindians
My daughter kriya jain has written her B.Com 1st year exams and her results
are out. She got A in all subjects except in economics. She got D in
economics. Even though if we consider thatbshe might not have written the
paper that well, B was acceptable and not D. What I understand after the
discussion with the faculty is that she might have lost marks because of
lack of graphs.
When I brought this to the notice of exam branch, I am told to bring some
guidelines which says that a V I student is exempted from drawings.
I searched the internet and found that the 2013 guidelines don't speak
anything about the same.
Now I want help from you all.
Is there any guideline or rules that anyone knows which mentions about the
exemption? If so please forward it to me on urgent basis as I am
considering re evaluation.
Thanks and regards

Dear folks,
I too have used Webvisum, newer version. It is not upto mark.
Few people are using the older version, probably it's working better.
I'm not able to find the previous version,
If someone could help me get the same version back that would be most thankful.

Re: [AI] Suggestions for the Budget 2019-20 any idea?

2019-06-11 Thread Amiyo Biswas
Yes, whatever the limit, we always have an extra exemption of Rs. 1.25 lakh.
I actually don't mind paying income tax if I have income. Anyway, we can
demand for a raise of Rs. 1.5 lakh.

I guess Income Tax exemption was raised up to Rs 5 lakhs in the
interim budget last time and if we add Rs 125 lakh more, it means we
disabled people are exempted upto Rs 6.25 lakhs?

I think, we can demand the following:

1. Withdrawal of 5% gst on all products for the pwd, there is no
guarantee

that the producer passes over the benefit of input tax credit to the
end-users. Moreover, we are paying 5% gst on braille paper when braille
books are free from gst.

2. Disability pension to all pwd's below poverty line, particularly aged
people and women with disability, directly from the central budget
(state

governments seldom care for schemes like this),

3. Provision of assistive devices to the vi employees within three months
of
appointment (we have to wait too long for the boss's good sense)

4. Blind schools at all districts to provide special education to the vi
children (inclusive education is not enough for most of the vi children),

These are a few I can think of just now.

Dear All
Just thinking about upcoming budget slated to be announced on fifth
July. And typing this mail to share my feelings all across! I feel we
have become little lethargic as far as consultative advocacy stands in
the current scenario?
Shouldn't we send suggestions to Nirmala Sitharaman for
disability-visual impairment specific concerns and challenges for the
fifth July Budget?
Do we blind people are happy with NDA's III fiscal/tax arrangements?
What about GST, and other export/import equipment concerns?
Where the hulaballoo about accessible coins gone?
And disability allowance available in Central Government
establishments is enough? does it not require revision for decades?
We should certainly engage with Mrs Sitaraman who is from JNU. wow!
Lets draft our suggestions on behalf of Access India, no?
Best
