All polling stations to be on ground floor if there’s no lift - Times of
India

MUMBAI: For the first time an assembly election will have all polling
booths on the ground floor if the building does not have working lifts.
Taxis and buses will also be arranged by the election commission to ferry
the elderly, ailing or disabled voters. “Accessibility will be the main
feature of this election and the administration is braced to achieve it,”
city district collector Shivaji Jondhale and suburban collector Milind
Borikar, who are also the district election officers, said in a public
interaction organised by Together VCAN, a social forum. Farog Mukadam,
deputy election officer, said the city and suburbs had 2,540 and 7,395
polling stations and only 104 of these in the city and 450 in the suburbs
had permission to operate from the first, second and third floors as these
had functional lifts. There would also be ramps for voters moving on
wheel-chairs. While city has around 5.5 lakh voters above the age of 60,
the suburban district has approximately over 20 lakh senior citizens. The
collectors said that at stations where rooms were not available on the
ground floor, pandals would be erected to create polling booths. 9/26/2019

and around 5,500 in the suburban district. The city and suburbs have a
target of achieving a minimum of 60% voting against the 53% and 57%
achieved in the recent Lok Sabha polls. “We have around 14
wheelchair-mounted vehicles donated by VCAN, a social forum and six buses
in the city to cater to disabled and elderly voters. In the suburbs, around
100 buses will arrange transport for them. Over and above this, 360 and
1,200 taxis each in city and suburbs will help in arranging transport for
such voters on behalf of the election commission,” Mukadam said.

[AI] Digital census will improve services, reduce documents, says Amit Shah

Digital census will improve services, reduce documents, says Amit Shah -
Times of India

NEW DELHI: Census 2021 will be a digital exercise and a shift from the
‘pen-paper’ method used previously by enumerators, opening the possibility
of enhancing delivery and reach of welfare schemes and services to the
right beneficiaries, home minister Amit Shah said on Monday. In his address
at the foundation stone laying ceremony for the new headquarters of the
Office of Registrar General of India and Census Commissioner, Shah spoke
about the potential of a properly-conducted ‘digital’ census eliminating
the need to maintain multiple documents even as he made it clear that the
government was not currently considering such a proposal. “A digital census
can have multiple utilities. So far, the government has not made such
plans. But can the register of births and deaths not be connected with the
electoral list? If a child is born, and not recorded as dead in the
following years, can he not be enrolled as a voter at age 18? Does he have
to apply? I think not,” Shah said. Digital census will improve services,
reduce documents, says Amit Shah He said potentially, a lot of duplication
could be avoided. “Aadhaar card, voter card, ID card... all these things,
all cards can come in one. Government has not made any such plans, I am
placing the potential before you as it is your task to make digital census
a success,” he told census officials. Emphasising that the census must not
be taken as a one-time, routine exercise, Shah said it would lead the
nation to better development over the next 25 years. He gave the example of
22 welfare schemes mapped on the basis of Census 2011 figures, including
those relating to provision of clean drinking water, LPG coverage, road
connectivity, electricity, health and education. Such accomplishments can
only take place when the process of census is fool-proof and accurate, Shah
told the gathering, mostly comprising census officials and staff. He said
the process of a ‘pen-paper census’ would be transformed to a 'digital
census’ in the 2021 exercise. Enumeration data would be captured using a
mobile app in the enumerator’s phone and the form itself would be in 16
languages. Shah said the National Population Register would be updated
alongside the Census 2021 exercise — with the total budget for both adding
up to Rs 12,000 crore. The minister said an efficient and scientific
digital census process held great future potential and if efficiently done,
it could lead to provision of public services through one platform.

Re: [AI] Amazon’s Echo can now help describe grocery items to the visually impaired

2019-09-25 Thread Kotian, H P
Hi
I was of an understanding Echo was essentially a blue-tooth speaker with
virtual assistant built-in.
Now I figure out it also has a camera. It was listening to the conversation in
the room all the time. So, is it also watching visually? Pretty scarry.
The feature demonstrated is interesting though although it is also available in
many apps.

Subject: [AI] Amazon’s Echo can now help describe grocery items to the visually
impaired

Amazon’s Echo can now help describe grocery items to the visually impaired
Amazon.com’s virtual assistant just got more intelligent after the company
revealed Monday that the visually impaired can now ask it what they are holding.
The new feature, called “Show and Tell,” enables customers who are blind or
people with low vision to hold an item in front of first- and second-generation
Echo Show devices and ask, “Alexa, what am I holding?” or “Alexa, what’s in my
hand?” The object will then be identified using Amazon’s machine learning
technology.
That could be especially helpful for grocery items such as tins and boxes that
might be hard to identify properly. As Amazon demonstrated in a video, a blind
person asked Alexa what she’s holding and Alexa replied, “It looks like tea.”
“The whole idea for Show and Tell came about from feedback from blind and low
vision customers,” said Sarah Caplener, who leads Amazon’s Alexa for Everyone
team. “We heard that product identification can be a challenge and something
customers wanted Alexa’s help with. Whether a customer is sorting through a bag
of groceries, or trying to determine what item was left out on the counter, we
want to make those moments simpler by helping identify these items and giving
customers the information they need in that moment.”
Partnering with California-based Vista Center for the Blind and Visually
Impaired, Amazon worked with visually impaired people to understand the
problems they have at home and how Alexa could help.
One volunteer who is completely blind called the technology “revolutionary,”
saying with such devices acting as his eyes, he is much more independent. He
said he likes to cook, but without the help of a personal assistant, it’s
impossible to know what spice he is holding. In another example, Alexa
identifies for him a box of macaroni and cheese.
“It’s essential to work with our customers, not just for them, to create
something that’s truly helpful,” said Caplener.

Actually we cannot rating in swiggy without the help of any sided
assistant. It is completely inaccessible with TalkBack while other features
of swiggy are completely accessible. we can order food, track our order,
edit our profile etc but we cannot do rating Independently. When TalkBack
is on, rating option does not be clicked but when TalkBack is off /
suspend, it works and a sited person can easily do raiting. Regards, Aman.

It would help if ywe could get the direct email address of some
higher officials of RBI as we can register complains on RBI sight only
after 30 days of the 1st complain registered with the bank. So please
let us know if you have any such contact person with whom we can
register our complains via email.

 Dear Access Indians,

If you are banking with ICICI, then have you noticed that the
password field is no longer accessible with ICICI netbanking sight?
I checked with JAWS 18 and 2019 and it seems to be the same in
 both.
If any one found a different mode of accessing this, then

 Hi all,

One of my friends is also facing the same issue.I guess, Twitter is
a better way to reach them, don't expect any action unless we tag
 some senior i.e.
 CEO or something.

Don't bother. Save yourself first. It is bothering screen readers and we
want it sorted out.
Complain to RBI immediately and the top management of ICICI.
We have to Protect our own rights-no one will do it unless we raise the
alarm.
At the back end we are already talking to RBI because we are having problems
with different banks.

I think Kanchan's suggestion is great. But I need to get clarification on
one thing. Is the issue faced only by users with screen readers or is it
common to everyone. I've read on their websight that they are in the process
of developping the new web interface for netbanking with more features. If
any of you have sighted friends using ICICI bank, then could you clarify us
on this? I'll try from my end as well. If the issue is only for us, then we
can put forward a strong case to the RBI.
