[AI] Emerging Technologies
Hi Access Indians, Freeview has rolled out its Accessible TV Guide and is available at Channel 555 on selected devices. The aim is to make it simpler for those with accessibility needs, such as visual impairments and hearing loss, to find content using the service. The new feature has been developed with insight from viewers, advocacy groups and accessibility research agencies, including the RNIB, Scope and the Digital Accessibility Centre, and is the first dedicated accessibility solution to launch on a UK TV platform. Viewers who tune into Channel 555 will be asked for their preferred accessibility settings, whether that's using the Text to Speech feature for navigation, only showing programmes with audio description, only showing programmes with subtitles or only showing programmes with sign language. For viewers with visual impairments, the UI has been developed with high-contrast appearance (white text on black background), screen magnification and a text-to-speech functionality, and with the last feature you can determine how quickly the speech is delivered, too. Once done, viewers can access a demo of how the guide works or start using it straight away. The actual guide will be a filtered version of the linear TV schedule, displaying content that relates to the viewer's own accessibility criteria. The Accessible TV Guide is available on select Freeview Play devices, and will be rolling out across the rest of Freeview Play devices in the coming months. Gary Thomas at the Digital Accessibility Centre commented: "This is a market leading product. I know of no other TV platform with this level of accessibility options. Freeview's Accessible TV Guide is a one stop shop, with the option to filter programmes by subtitles, audio description and sign language. It's easy to follow, and its default text-to-speech feature is a welcome original feature to help blind and visually impaired users. As a blind user, the Accessible TV Guide will allow me to read, plan, and access programs independently which has not been possible for many years." -- Disclaimer: 1. [AI] Request a feedback on Tatasky android set of box.
Dear all, Is there anyone on the list using Tatasky android set of box? Recently they have launched an upgrade scheme wherein existing users can upgrade their box to android box at Rs. 2499. But even after repeated calling to customer support, they are not able to givve any information about its accessibility for us, whether it has talkback in it. I wish to use the same to view my subscription packages rather than online contents. If anyone has first hand experrience of this box please let me know if there is talkback in it and whether it announces channel name and numbers. Also pls tell if it is possible to use google voice command to go to a particular channel. Your feedback will help me to decide about the upgrade. Awaiting your prompt reply, C. B. [AI] Support to agitating workers & peasants
November 12, 2020 *Press Statement* The National Platform for the Rights of the Disabled (NPRD) extends its support to the November 26, 2020 all India strike called by several leading central trade unions. The call by the workers unions is against the regressive labour codes legislated by the central government, privatisation of Public Sector units, growing unemployment etc. The NPRD also extends its solidarity with the call given by various kisan organisations for protest actions on November 26 & 27 against the anti-farmer legislations. The Covid19 pandemic has led to large scale job loss for the disabled, who even otherwise were rarely employed in the organised sector. Privatisation of public sector units negates the affirmative action provided by legislations like the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, which provides for reservation of 4 per cent in government and public sector undertakings. Casualisation and contractualisation have already led to various services and posts thrown out of its ambit. The NPRD calls upon its state affiliates to organise solidarity actions on November 26 while reiterating the following demands: 1. Provide Rs. 5000/- as ex-gratia per month to all disabled during the pandemic period 2. Provide reservation in employment in the private sector 3. Provide 200 days of work to all disabled who register under MNREGA, enact Urban employment guarantee Act 4. Implement Section 24 of the RPD Act, 2016 – provide for caregiver allowance and unemployment allowance – as mandated in the Act. *(Muralidharan)* *General Secretary* -- National Platform for the Rights of the Disabled (NPRD) 36, Pt.
