Re: [AI] Mandatory eye scanning for SIM purchase

2024-01-22 Thread Satguru Rathi

Ya, this is true.
I recently needed to get a duplicate SIM card and Airtel store people
insisted on eye scanning and when I told them that I shall be filing a
complaint for this extra hassle and for hurting my dignity as a person
with disability, they agreed to take my fingerprints instead and issued
me the SIM card. But since I was their loyal customer having their post
paid connection for so many years, they might have considered this too.
Had I needed a new SIM, things could have gone differently. And, you
can't convince everyone and there should be some clear cut instructions
while issuing SIM cards to people with vision impairment.

such as Airtel, Vodafone Idea, and Jio. Our inability to scan with
our eyes, due to the absence of retina or iBalls, presents a
significant challenge when attempting to go through the conventional
process of SIM card acquisition at retail outlets.
As visually impaired individuals, we encounter insurmountable
difficulties as retailers rely on eye scanning for SIM card
purchases, which creates a barrier that excludes us from accessing
essential telecommunication services. This impediment not only
contravenes our rights but also isolates us from the benefits of

In light of these challenges, we seek the intervention of TRAI to
address this matter. We urge the authority to advocate for and

access to SIM cards for persons with visual impairment who lack the
ability to scan with their eyes. We propose the implementation of
alternative measures, such as biometric solutions like fingerprint
scanners, to facilitate the purchase of SIM cards, thereby ensuring
accessibility and inclusivity for all.
It is imperative that the regulatory framework governing SIM card
purchases is adapted to accommodate the needs of the visually
impaired community, enabling us to exercise our right to procure
essential telecommunication services independently and with dignity.

Re: [AI] Please tell an accessible way to sign PDF docuements

2024-01-22 Thread Sandeep Singh
Hi Cauvery
You have to register for DSC, usually through a chartered accountant.
A pen drive is finally given that has your digital signature. I
suppose it costs around INR 4-6K, our friends who know more can throw
light on it. This is valid for 2-3 years, and then you have to renew
it. It's usually for official purposes like Income Tax deptt or
official documents, but you can also use it for personal purposes. If
someone come up with more info, fine, otherwise, I'll ask my CA friend
and furnish more details

Thank you Sandeep for your response.
Could you please share about digital signature DSC in detail?
How does it work? From where to get it? How much does it cost? Does it work
in both Android and Windows?

[AI] Filling PDF forms

2024-01-22 Thread Yamuna Jivana Dasa
Hi,

There are 4 very different situations I can think of in doing what you are
requesting. If anyone wants to add to this or offer corrections or
clarifications please do so.

1. In the first situation, if you want to fill a PDF form, then the
form must be properly created in the PDF file.

The person creating the PDF form must assign the proper controls such as
text fields, buttons, checkboxes Etc. If this is true, you can use your
screen-reader's Edit mode or Forms mode, and tab or shift-tab between these
controls and fill it out that way. In other words, this will work only if
the form is made accessible. If they do not apply these controls in the
form, then you have no choice but to use method 2, 3 or 4 below which
applies to inaccessible PDF forms.

2. If the PDF is still in computer text and not a raw image, you could
still import it into Microsoft Word, and fill in text manually into the text
area of the form, but of course the form will lose its original formatting
because then you would be modifying it.

3. If the PDF is an image, then you could perform OCR and fill it into
the OCR text, but a further risk here is that the OCR text itself could have
OCR errors which will be a misrepresentation of the original text. As with
method 2 above, you also risk the format of the original form in the
document.

4. I'll mention the obvious as a fourth method: Print out the PDF and
have a sighted person fill it out, scan the filled form and archive or send
it off as you need to. If you are saving the scanned image, you can name the
file meaningfully in your filing system so that you can identify it later
without sighted help. Don't bother trying to OCR the filled form because OCR
cannot detect hand-writing very well, and in most cases will produce garbage
output for the hand-written penned text.

I hope this helps. Any corrections or clarifications are welcome.

Wishing everyone a happy day on today's glorious occasion of the restoration
of Sri Rama lala in Ayodhya Dhama by our most glorious prime minister Modi
and other dignitaries.

Yamuna Jivana dasa

[AI] Live translation software?

2024-01-22 Thread Yamuna Jivana Dasa
Hi friends,

Anyone knows of software that can listen to speech in one language and
translate in realtime to another language even while the speech is
continuing to be spoken, all in realtime?

Ideally, we can then use earphones to listen to the translated audio without
disturbing the microphone listening to the original text, because the TTS
translated audio will come back on earphones so it won't return back to the
microphone listening to the source language original spoken audio.

I would like to listen in this way to spoken Hindi which gets translated
into English.

As blind people this will be the equivalent to subtitles that sighted people
use, so that while being entertained by what they watch, they can also learn
the language more easily over time.

For now I would like to listen to, and understand today's historic speech of
our Prime Minister at the Sri Rama temple. My disability today is not being
blind, it is being ignorant of the Hindi language. Quite a disability this
is!

Kind regards,

Yamuna Jivana dasa

Re: [AI] Please tell an accessible way to sign PDF docuements

2024-01-22 Thread Cauvery Krishna
Thank you for the response!
I am not willing to take print outs, then scan the pages, as it makes the
PDF inaccessible. The screen readers cannot read scanned PDFs without
running OCR, and OCRs are not accurate either.
Therefore I am looking for an accessible way to sign PDF documents.
Regards.
Cauvery.

2024-01-22 Thread Yamuna Jivana Dasa
Hi Friends,

As we know today is the most historic breakthrough after 500 years
suppression over the Ayodhya temple of Lord Rama's birthplace, and we would
like to hear some feedback. Anyone knows if we can hear the live event with
some audio feedback of the happenings there?

Thanks.

Dear Udit, Minar and Anirudh,

Just like George said, we would like to speak to you to know your specific
feedback. We will try to learn from it and improve our processes.

NAB Delhi Helpline has been running since 2006, it has been operated by blind
persons for blind persons. In the past 17 years it has benefited many but there
may be people who did not have a good experience.

There is no excuse for bad behaviour from our side. Helpline team does not know
everything and it should be respectfully saying so or referring callers to
other resources when the query is on a subject we don’t work with.

In the coming week one of us will contact you to get your feedback and
suggestions.

Thanks,

Prashant

hi Udit,

I had a similar experience here in Bangalore.

it was a year ago or so and I wanted to put it here on access India.

I somehow thought I should not and forgot about it

it is a very good idea that one should have an access to information and
guidance at a call but, the person guiding has to be resourceful.

Appreciate this feedback. Apologies for the unprofessional response from the

Will investigate and get to the root of the matter.

I agree , there would be a number of dissatisfied callers. I need to know what
the challenges and negative experiences have been. We strive to constantly
improve. Having said this, there are a large number of blind persons from
different parts of the country who have had positive experiences too.

This, however is no excuse for an unprofessional response. Thanks once again to
share the feedback. Please connect with me off the list on 011 45500380 in the

Even i had a similar experience with NAB helpline. their representative was

improve unless the government takes action.
