SBI also has auto debit option. Once you have added the vender amount will get
deducted monthly. I pay my internet bill using SBI auto debit option.

RE: [AI] Device for tracking Car

2022-07-29 Thread अंशुल कपूर
Dear Sir,
If I remember right, somebody on the list was saying that it consumes battery
24 X 7, is there any way to turn it off when the car is not in use or
preferably at night just to save battery?

Dear all,
Many visually impaired may be wanting to keep a track of their car. Some of the
new cars come with connected features where the owner can check where the car
is, details of previous trips, set geo
fence, check driver’s behaviour such as over speeding, harsh breaking etc.
Many devices are available in the market for installation in cars that don’t
have this feature in-built.

I have just now installed the GoConnect OBD device from GoMechanic. I think
it is an extremely good option. It is for only Rs. 1650 whereas most other
known brands are selling similar devices in the range of rs. 6000 to 12,000.
And the most important is that we are not required to pay any monthly or yearly
subscription for the sim card that is embedded in the device.
It is a one time cost. One can order it from GoMechanic app. You will need to
take your car to their workshop where the device will be inserted in the OBD
port which is mostly below the steering wheel. Activation takes less than 30
minutes. They did not ask for any document. You just need to create an account
in the GoMechanic ap.

What concerns us is accessibility of the app. The GoMechanic iOS app is
partly accessible at this time. It should be possible for blind users to check
the location of their car, speed, distance travelled etc. Most other features
are not accessible.

Please buy it at your own risk as far as accessibility is concerned. Otherwise
it is highly recommended for non-disabled users of cars.

[AI] Vehicle purchase exemption for visually impaired

2022-07-05 Thread अंशुल कपूर
Dear List,
During last few days, there was a discussion going on the list about an order
which states exemption in vehicle purchase by the visually impaired in line
with the same given to orthopedically impaired. Currently there is no exemption
for the VH in this regard. Kindly provide me with that order which states that
VH will also get exemption in vehicle purchase as I intend to write a letter in
this regard to the honourable Prime Minister making him aware of this
discrimination. I also got no discount in my vehicle purchase. Kindly send the
order on anshul.kap...@gail.co.in.
Thanking you

Dear Sir,
One of my friends very recently got the UDIT card for concession in his vehicle
purchase as he is an orthopedically challenged person but he told me that the
authorities are saying that nowadays we don't print and send the card to you
instead you have to take a print out of the same and get it laminated and it is
valid pan India. My friend has also done the same. Please don't wait to arrive
the same at your residence, go ahead and print it out and carry it everywhere
along with you. Now this is our new identity.

Recently one of my friend working in Defence Ministry had gone to DRM railway

accept his application without UDID card and digital medical certificate, this
happend in New Delhi Railway Station and also here in Delhi for DTC bus pass

Hi,
In I phone, in the voice over on tab, in audio settings, there is a button
which says like this—“auto select speaker in call- ON/ OFF”. When it is turned
on the speaker mode will turn on as you take your phone away from your ear and
vice versa. This setting will not have any effect when voice over is turned off
as then, by default this setting is also turned off. You can also manually turn
it off while using voice over.

hello Mr. Anshal,
it depends on the type of captcha you are presented with.
I have come across captchas where they do not have an image or an audio.
image describers would describe the image with some accuracy but, if
it is neither audio nor image, the problem persists.
the only way is to urge the website creators to go for accessible captchas.

Re: [AI] Sensory substitution in blind?

2018-11-29 Thread अंशुल कपूर
I enquired about this technique about 4-5 years back from a person teaching the
same in Gujarat. He was making sighted children read books with their eyes
closed. On enquiring he told me that it is not possible for adults as people
who develop logic cannot get benefit from this technique. I mailed the same on
access India at that time also. Only children who haven't developed logical
thinking can successfully practice this technique. The person from Gujarat told
me that it is my business and I will benefit from it but adults cannot do this
at all. My father told me about this on viewing a TV channel and I searched for
his contact no. from the net.

Hello All,

I'm Shaswat from Eye-D. I'm really sorry that some of your are not being able

such issue is being observed on our end.

Gufran / Vikas,

For better results results please try to hold your phone 15-20 cms above the

Thank you Satguru for answering the queries :)

Please do let me know if you have any queries and suggestions.

[AI] In 5 Minutes, He Lets the Blind See

2015-11-10 Thread अंशुल कपूर
He has restored eyesight to more than 100,000 people, perhaps more than any
doctor in history, and still his patients come. They stagger and grope their
way to him along mountain trails from remote villages, hoping to go under his
scalpel and see loved ones again.

A day after he operates to remove cataracts, he pulls off the bandages - and,
lo! They can see clearly. At first tentatively, then jubilantly, they gaze
about. A few hours later, they walk home, radiating an ineffable bliss.

Dr. Sanduk Ruit, a Nepali ophthalmologist, may be the world champion in the war
on blindness. Some 39 million people worldwide are blind - about half because
of cataracts - and another 246 million have impaired vision, according to the
World Health Organization.

If you're a blind person in a poor country, then traditionally you have no
hope. But Ruit has pioneered a simple cataract microsurgery technique that
costs only $25 per patient and is virtually always successful. Indeed, his
"Nepal method" is now taught in U.S. medical schools.

I'm on my annual win-a-trip journey, in which I take a university student with
me on a trip to the developing world to cover underreported issues. The
student, Austin Meyer of Stanford University, and I traveled to Hetauda in
southern Nepal to watch Ruit perform his magic on 102 men and women.

One patient was Thuli Maya Thing, a woman of 50 who says she has struggled to
look after her children since losing her sight to cataracts in the last few
years. Because of her blindness and inability to work, the family sometimes
goes hungry.

"I can't fetch firewood or water," Thuli Maya told me. "I can't cook food. I
fall down many times. I've been burned by the fire."

So Thuli Maya was waiting outside the eye hospital that Ruit has established
here, nervous but also eager with anticipation. "I will be able to see my
children and husband again - that's what I look forward to most," she said.

She was led to the operating theater, and her eyes were injected with local
anesthetic. After hoisting her left eye wide open with an eyelid speculum, Ruit
peered through a microscope as he made a tiny incision in her eyeball and then
tugged out the cataract - and placed it in my palm. It was hard and yellowish,
perhaps a third of an inch in diameter, a tiny opaque disk that had devastated
Thuli Maya's life.

Ruit inserted a tiny new lens into the eye and he was done. The process took
just five minutes. Then he repeated the process for Thuli Maya's right eye,
confident that she would see again.

"Here, the returns are so clear," Ruit said as he bandaged her eye. "It's like
no other medical intervention."

In the United States, cataract surgery is typically performed with complex
machines. But these are unaffordable in poor countries, so Ruit built on the
work of others (including the Aravind Eye Care System in India, a superb
institution that performed 280,000 cataract surgeries last year) to pioneer and
refine small-incision microsurgery to remove cataracts without sutures.

At first, skeptics denounced or mocked his innovations. But then the American
Journal of Ophthalmology published a study of a randomized trial finding that
Ruit's technique had exactly the same outcome (98 percent success at a
six-month follow-up) as the Western machines. One difference was that Ruit's
method was much faster and cheaper.

"The results are fantastic," said Dr. Geoffrey Tabin, an eye specialist at the
University of Utah's Moran Eye Center. Tabin learned the technique from Ruit
and was in Hetauda as well, removing cataracts beside Ruit, and he says the
results in rural Nepal using this technique are as good as those of his
patients in Salt Lake City paying for first-class care and benefiting from
almost $1 million in the latest medical equipment.

Tabin said that when machines can't be used for cataract surgery in the United
States (if, for example, the cataract is too large), the standard American
manual surgical technique is inferior to Ruit's.

Tabin, a mountain climber whose interest in Nepal was sparked by summiting
Mount Everest, leads the Himalayan Cataract Project, a U.S. charity that
supports Ruit's work and takes its techniques to other countries, like Ethiopia
and Ghana. The battle against global blindness is now a joint Ruit/Tabin
project, and they optimistically named their website CureBlindness.org.

"Dr. Ruit was the first doctor to put lenses in poor persons in the developing
world," Tabin said. "Nobody has restored sight to as many people."

By Ruit's count, which others find credible, he has conducted 120,000 cataract
surgeries, mostly on a single eye of a patient. But Ruit developed not just a
surgical technique but an entire eye care system. He founded the Tilganga
Institute of Ophthalmology, which includes hospitals, outreach clinics and
training programs and an eye bank, using fees from better-off patients to
support impoverished ones like Thuli Maya

Re: [AI] Sub: Stern Action Sought Against The UGC for violating the Office Memorandum Issued by the Government of India for Conducting Examination for Persons with Disabilities

2015-07-02 Thread अंशुल कपूर
I don't know the reason why such irregularities in scribe conditions were
prevalent. I appeared in the UGC NET in Dec. 2014 and no such condition was
laid out. The only condition was to take prior permission for the scribe by
producing his mark sheets/ certificate of the last exam passed along with
photocopy of his identity card duly signed by him. I appeared in Delhi and I
had to visit College of Vocational Studies, Shekhsarai for bringing my own
scribe else no permission was required if the scribe provided by the centre was
acceptable. The CVS issued the permission in writing and producing the same in
the examination centre made the job more easier. The only problem was that 6 VH
candidates were allotted 1 room and it became really difficult to differentiate
between phrases read out by scribes. I had to concentrate really hard to listen
to my question and made several requests to other scribes for softening their
vocals. A scribe reading in Hindi was almost replicating an epic. On that day a
huge amount of effort just went into identifying my question from a set of
several undifferentiated ones.

One has no problem in obtaining sanction for using the scribe. But why to visit
day prior to the exam Centre along with the scribe? One of my friends studies
in Jammu University has informed that his Exam Centre was 70 Kms from his
villege. And he couldn't visit the Centre multiple times due to his poverty.

Amit Manga, an entrepreneur and independent business traveler, accompanies us
to the Lemon Tree Hotel Company in Delhi that is redefining the term
accessibility.

A young and award winning hotel chain, the company has upscale, midscale and
economy hotels.

Amit is checking out an accessible room in their economy brand, Red Fox Hotels.

Amit says he is satisfied by the hotel's accessibility standards. "The first
thing I noticed was the flooring and that is fantastic. It has to be wooden,
non-carpeted flooring or marble flooring. That's very essential for the
wheelchair to move around conveniently and smoothly. The bed height is perfect
and the most essential part is the washroom. It was large, it has grab rails
all around. Even the shower is a roll in shower. Many hotels overlook these
little things."

Amit suggests that the chairs in the room be traditional ones with armrests as
guests like him would feel more secure when seated in them.

He says he is familiar with experiencing disappointment with so called
accessible hotels.

"These are the big names in the hotel industry like the ITC Maurya Sheraton at
the heart of Delhi. It's a very old hotel and I go there very often, I love the
food there, but they don't have something as basic as an accessible toilet on
the lobby level. They do have an accessible room which is again not up to the
mark. Hotels do have guidelines but they don't have compliance," he said.

Accessibility is an integral part of the Lemon Tree business model. About 13
per cent of the employees, that is nearly 400 of the 3,000, are people with
disabilities. Most of them are hearing and speech impaired, and general
managers in the chain are expected to learn sign language to communicate with
them. The company has now started taking people who are orthopedically impaired
and those with Down's syndrome. The inclusive work policy has sensitized the
staff to the needs of guests with disabilities.

Accessible tourism is seen as the fastest growing business opportunity in the
tourism industry. In North America alone, people with disabilities spend more
than $13 billion each year on travel.

No doubt Avinash is doing a great job, but posting the article on the list has
both pross & corns. Sometimes the net connection is not working and we have to
wait wait & wait for the page to open and sometimes the anti virus of our

It takes time to read all the newspapers, given the accessibility issues.
Further, sending the link makes more sense than sending the whole article,
especially where the subscriber is on digest mode. What if one just doesn't
want to read a particular article itself?

As a new user if you are uncomfortable opening the links from emails directly
due to spam concerns which are totally understandable, then simply google for
the article using the title and read the same.

Trust me, 90% of the subscribers will be missing out if Avinash discontinues
the practice of sending these updates on the list.

Hi Vikas, Vamshi
As such, these Phillips shavers really lasts a very long time. The design is
such, it does not require replacement of the blades. There is no other
expenditure really.

On some model, it is possible to clean even the blades, while on other models,
you require special tools to do so and it is done at their service station.

Unfortunately, the blades are not standardised across their model and as a
result you cannot swap parts if you have other models.

If the battery is built in, this would be a factor for it to break down early.
You can consider PQ202 Phillips shaver
It is light, small and has a removable batteries. The motor has a good tork.
You can use a rechargeable battery. It is very easy to clean it up and I had
got for Rs. 1,111 on Snapdeal. The price may be different now.

The placement of the battery is non conventional. It is a matter of getting
used to.

I would recommend this model.

This does not have a trimmer. Actually, it is not necessary to have a trimmer.
I find the electric shavers takes less time to shave compared to the
traditional rasors.

2015-02-17 Thread अंशुल कपूर
(Malini Chib works with TCS in London and is a free-lance writer)
One can be patriotic even when you are abroad, even if your own country rejects
you because you are disabled. I am a proud Indian, but since the age of 1, I
have been in and out of London to lead a normal life.

I am 48 ; I have Cerebral Palsy . Yes, I am privileged to be able to shift
countries - in that way, I am luckier than so many people with special needs.
But I still feeI the alienation and isolation of having to move from a country
where all basic services and systems excluded me.

Being in a wheelchair in India leaves me trapped. I can never go out into the
street for a "walk", to buy stuff in Mumbai, the city where I grew up. I love
Mumbai, but I am made invisible because of this exclusion.

I have two Masters degrees, both from London, where it was easy for me to get
admission. I began my professional life late -at the age of 32. I now work at
TCS as a Diversity Consultant .

In India, for nearly four years, I did part-time jobs and could not develop a
career. These jobs were considered 'work-experience' - a kind of testing of my
skills that others were not required to endure. After having a degree and a
post-graduate diploma in Publishing from the Polytechnic in Oxford, I joined a
magazine called Technocrat in Mumbai. I was treated just like any other
employee -so I was pulled up for taking too long for a piece, but it was fun
and I appreciated the honesty shown to me, as also the challenge.

However, it was inaccessible because the office was located in Nariman Point.
As I approached the building, stairs confronted me. There was no elevator to
reach the 9th where the office was located. My wheelchair had to be carried up
by two or three people. I had to be helped onto the wheelchair. My carer had to
come at lunch time to help me because the canteen where people usually ate and
socialized was not accessible for me. So although it was great to be working
with normal people, it still remained degrading and there was a loss of dignity
in needing to be lifted up the stairs due to an inaccessible environment. So
although the work environment was conducive and inclusive to me and the
attitudes was par excellence, the inaccessibility wore me down.

I left for London in 1993 as my mother got invited to London School as an
academic visitor. The slogan for disabled people that I saw everywhere was
"Rights and not Charity." Disabled people were seen everywhere. It was an age
where disabled people's voices were being heard. "Nothing about us without us"
was the chant of the day. After meeting a few disabled people, I realized I
needed to be more empowered. My speech was the biggest hindrance. Other
disabled people who had poorer speech were getting heard as they were using
voice synthesizers. Friends started saying that I needed to communicate on my
own. At that time I didn't realise how vital it was to communicate without
needing a third party. I was assessed and got myself a Toby Churchill light
writer.

What was terrific and euphoric for that for the first time in my 25 years, I
could go where I wanted on my own. The London Buses became accessible - a ramp
comes out and I hop on without much ado. I felt unchained, free as a bird.

Then circumstances were such that I needed to move back to India. I couldn't
waste away in a corner and sit at home. I wanted a job like my non-disabled
peers.

I then did a two month 'work experience with Malvika Sangvi with Bombay Times.
Of course the Times building did not have a ramp. I felt again embarrassed
because everybody in the office knew when I wanted to go to the toilet because
my helper would come and assist me. Once, on my first day, I slipped in the
toilet and got cut badly.

Then I managed to get a job at Oxford bookshop in Bombay as Senior Events
Manager. They respected my qualifications and I was told to build up a data
base and increase the footfalls. I did that .The bookshop's office was so small
that my wheelchair took up most of the space. There was one toilet, but it was
not something I could access. Besides being unclean, one can count on one's
fingers how many disabled toilets are there in Mumbai. I always need a car and
driver to take me to the nearest one.

Whereas in Britain all public places and transport are accessible. Since I am
entitled to work in London, I got a job in London at TCS. From my flat in
Pimlico, my wheelchair meanders across rush hour to work regardless of crowds.
I work in the HR Department with the Diversity and Inclusion team. I am a
researcher and I look at gender policy. I am also involved with disability
sensitization.

India has made some progress on this front -I see changes in wheel-chair
friendly toilets at airports and five-star hotels.

If we disabled people are to be a part of society and life, we as a nation have
to be more responsible to ensure that every public place has to have a disabled
loo.

For long beards, first use a trimmer and then use the shaver. I think Philips
offer many models which have both the features. I always do the same except
that after trimming, I use a conventional shaver. Generally some myths are
associated with electric shavers but contradicted by Harish Ji.

Hi
Circular motion is correct way to do it. The hair tends to get stuck only if
the beard has grown a little long.

Alternate day is good to go generally, Probably you are shaving with a longer
interval.Try to shaver more oftener and see if the problem persists.

What you can also do is to keep the shaver a little more away from the skin to
start with. Ones the long beard have dot trimmed out, you can get it closer to
the skin.

Hi,

I also use a Philips shaver and am very satisfied with its performance. The
only problem that I face is that it often sticks to the stubble and doesn't
remove the stubble very smoothly. I apply it over my beard in a circular manner
as per the user guide and yet face this problem. Is this normal, or am I doing
something wrong?

January first 2020 will be wednessday.
Step 1.
Take 19.
Step 2.
Plus 4.
Step3.
Plus 1.
Step4.
Divide it into 7.
The answer will be 3 remaining 3.
Now the last step.
Count that remaining as:
Sunday 0 Monday 1 Tuesday 2 & wednessday 3.
The answer is January 1st 2020 will be Wednessday.
Another example:
August 15th 1947 Was Friday.
Step1.
Take 15.
Step2.
Plus 46 iquals 61.
Step3.
Plus 11 iquals 72.
Step4.
Plus 16 iquals 88.
Step5.
Plus 15 iquals 103.
Step6.
Divide it into7 iquals 7 remaining 5.
Now count it as:
Sunday 0 Monday 1 Tuesday 2 Wednessday 3 Thursday 4 & Friday 5.
It has been proved that India came into being on Friday August 15th 1947.

Subject: [AI] A special child with a special ability

She is indeed a very special child who can simply astonish one with her innate
ability. Ask this 14-year-old girl the date and month of a particular year
anywhere between 1941 and 2050, the reply would at once come in a flash. Try
testing her ability by asking her on which day January 2020 would begin, the
response would again be instant.
Meet K. Priyanka, a special child afflicted with cerebral palsy, yet endowed
with this extraordinary talent. Daughter of an auto driver N.
Kannan, the Tiruchi girl studying eighth standard at Sri Ramakrishna Middle
School in Puthur has the unique ability to name days, dates and identify links
between multiple years. It is for her intuitive ability and uncanny precision
in pinning a day to any date between 1941 and
2050 that earned her the National Award for Best Creative Child With
Disabilities (Girl) recently. It was undoubtedly a proud moment for the girl
and her parents - Kannan and K. Banu when Priyanka received the national award
from none less than the President of India at New Delhi on the occasion of
International Day of Persons with Disabilities recently. The parents cannot
express their delight in words about their daughter's talent.
It is only God's grace, says Kannan and Banu in one voice. It was only in June
2011 that we discovered Priyanka's unique ability, says Banu, a caretaker in a
private school. I wanted to attend a temple function on a particular day in
August and was not sure whether I would be in a position to avail leave on that
day. Listening to this, Priyanka took us by complete surprise by instantly
pointing out that the particular day in August would fall on a Saturday. I
immediately checked the daily sheet calendar and found to my utter surprise
that what she was said was true. From then on we tested Priyanka by giving
random dates, month and year and she would accurately spell out the right
answer every time within five seconds, says Banu. "I feel very happy in
receiving the national award"says a beaming Priyanka whose talent stunned
Collector Jayashree Muralidharan when she tested the girl's ability at the
Collectorate on Monday after the special child met her with the award.

Sir,
I saw the programme and many such programmes on the subject matter. On
enquiring, the person in surat who runs the coaching centre told me that this
technique of reading without seeing can only be learned by children in the age
group 6- 14 yrs. and not beyond that. The reason he gave was till the age of
14, logic is not developed and you being older, have developed logic and cannot
learn the technique. But when I searched the net, I found that it is a Japanese
technique practiced over years by the young and old.

Friends
As an article was posted about sonar navigation the other day here, I thought
to ask about seeing by smell thing being telecast by some channels on TV about
a surat girl who can apparently do so.
I have not watched the program, but if anybody has then please share the
details.
Is it her peculiar gift, or technique can be learned etc.

With thanks and regards
