[AI] 1-Day National Conference On Discrimination On The Ground Of Disabilities.

Greetings from NAB helpline

Jointly Organized On 7TH January 2015 At 10 a.m. By

Society For Affirmative Action

Convened by

Concept Note:-

The society has been exclusive since the days of antiquity.

Due to the prevalent practices of exclusivism human beings in the society
have been ostracized not only on the grounds of caste, creed, culture,
racism and gender, but even on the ground of physical deficits and
disabilities.

The role of the governments, nations and society in the erstwhile context of
the development of differently abled persons has been quite scant and meager
and henceforth, their duties and responsibilities for the upliftment of this
vulnerable marginalized section have considerably augmented to a larger
extent, especially in the context of elimination of discrimination and grant
of social justice.

Disabilities have been deemed as prenatal anathema of transgression and an
awful social stigma.

People with disabilities have suffered more at the hands of vagaries, set
social conventions, kinks, prejudices, apathy and andstors than on the
ground of their visual and physical deficits.

How lamentable it is that the disabilities of the people are viewed first
and abilities later, seldom or never.

Disabled persons have been facing discrimination for several ages.

Discrimination seems to be an inevitable anathema to grind them of their
potential values of life and dreams, passions and emotions.

It begins with them since infancy and acquisition of disabilities and
continues for lifelong be it in family, neighborhood, educational
institutions of schools, colleges and universities, built environment,
employments and their work places.

Disabled persons with a valiant spirit have no doubt combated the physical
and social odds and the consecutive strife they have made has certainly
helped them to smite and smash ages old barriers.

Despite the odds of disabilities, inspite of social kinks and vagaries, set
social conventions of prejudices, apathy and andstors against them,
differently abled persons after crossing the ages of annihillation,
emancipation, and integration, have now assertively and emphatically entered
the modern age of liberalism and inclusivism; and such new coinages as
differently abled and specially abled have found prominent usages in modern
governments, nations and society for persons with disabilities.

Almost every differently abled individual has made hard strife, and he/she
has taken strides far ahead to the extent of making valuable contributions
to the government, nation and society in his / her own commendable way.

But nevertheless, the discrimination virus is continuing endlessly,
ruthlessly gnawing at the abilities of specially abled persons, be it in the
place of work, family, society, neighborhood, or any other built
environments.

The serious cause of concern is:

How to combat and eliminate the discrimination virus?

Is it by countering the ages old propogated myths and proverbial sayings
meant to tarnish and belittle the image of differently abled persons?

Is it by advocating the cause of politics and philosophy of inclusivism?

Is it by writing, translating, collecting, compiling and researching
disability literature, and advocating for the inclusion of disability
education in the curricula of the schools, colleges and universities?

Let these questions be left for them profound ponderings, serious
discussions and polemic debates of the scholars, intelligentia and academia.

But, as the slogan goes: nothing for us without us;

So too, let ourselves, the abled and disabled take the initiatives and make
it a religion to be bound with and let it act upon us as a constantly
binding force to write, translate, research, collect and compile our own
literature, history, sociology, philosophy and psychology and advocate for
the inclusion of disability education which may with the passage of time
eliminate discrimination, paving the way for the social accommodation of
differently abled persons in the mainstream of the nation and society.

This National Conference beckons forthwith to share the empirical views of
the disabled as well as nondisabled scholars and learned academicians on
Discrimination On The Ground Of Disabilities.

Call for papers and Sub-Themes:-

Venue: NAB, Sector-V, R.K. Puram, New Delhi

Background

During the last several years initiatives have been taken by banks,
organizations for the blind and individuals to make the banking services
accessible to persons with blindness or low vision. Although much needs to
be done to make all the services completely accessible, visually impaired
persons can take advantage of the available accessible banking services to
make their lives much easier and comfortable.

Since the installation of first talking ATM in June-2011, many banks have
installed talking ATMS across different parts of the country and now India
has more than 4500 talking ATMS installed across different states and

[AI] IBPS workshop take away material

2013-12-30 Thread NAB Helpline
Greetings from NAB Assistive Technology Helpline!

In our series of sessions on the banking theme we conducted two sessions
namely "Banking Accessibility and Talking ATM" and "Empowering Young
Visually Impaired Bankers" on 9th November and 14th December, 2013
respectively.

On December 28, 2013 we conducted an interactive workshop for the visually
impaired candidates who have qualified IBPS CWE examination from 3:00 PM to
5:00PM. The workshop was conducted to empower the candidates who are called
for the interview scheduled in the month of January-2014.

Session Objective:

This empowering workshop intended to equip the participants with the
essential skills required for cracking the interview. In majority of cases
it is observed that interview panel does not consist of a member who is
aware about the assistive technology or the abilities of the visually
impaired person. So in this scenario it becomes imperative on part of the
interview candidate to demonstrate and inform the interview board about
strengths of a visually impaired person. The area that shall be concentrated
was probable questions based on past experiences, effective entry and exit
skills, body language and transmission of strong areas of the participant
during the interview.

Session Highlights:

The workshop was facilitated by Dr. Ashwini Kumar Agarwal and Mr.

Dipendra Manocha. Dr. Agarwal has rose to the rank of chief manager with
Punjab national bank and is associated with the bank's training system for a
decade. Presently he is posted at zonal training center as senior faculty.
Dr. Agarwal has also designed an informative and empowering document for
prospective visually impaired bankers.

Mr. Dipendra Manocha is working as the Developing countries coordinator and
Lead of Training and Tech Support with the DAISY Consortium. He is member of
The Executive Committee of the World Blind Union. He is managing trustee of
The Saksham Trust. He is the elected president of the NAB Delhi and DAISY
Forum of India.

The participants were also benefited by the valuable and key inputs on body
language and communications by Ms. Madhu and Ms. Monika who are working with
IBM as trainers.

NAB helpline is sharing full proceedings of this two hour session in

mp3 format. We have made available multiple audio files for easy listening.

[AI] Saksham and nab delhi are offering 2 months computer training along with netbooks.

2013-03-21 Thread NAB Helpline
Dear Accessindians,

Greetings from NAB Delhi,

Here is a chance of getting computer training along with a netbook at a
subsidised rate.

GET A COMPUTER FOR YOURSELF ALONG WITH TRAINING TO USE IT

What is the benefit of learning computer if you cannot use one to become
independent in reading and writing after training is complete.

Saksham brings two batches of five seats each this summer of a unique
computer training programme with kind support from HCL.

Batch 1: In collaboration with National Association for the Blind, Delhi
State Branch will be conducted at computer training unit, National
Association for the Blind, , Sector 5, R.K. Puram, New Delhi. In addition
to the support from HCL, this batch is also supported by Tech Mahindra
Foundation for the training component.

Batch 2 will be held at Saksham School located at A2 Sector 31 Noida which
is supported entirely by HCL.

Both these batches will be conducted from 1st May to 30th June 2013.

A computer loaded with screen reading software and other useful applications
is almost like giving eyes back to persons with vision problem. This tool
can make them completely independent for almost all their reading and
writing needs.

Under this program participants have the opportunity of owning a computer
with all necessary software and learning their use at highly subsidized cost
. What we offer under this programme:

. Two Month Computer Training with completion certificate from
Saksham or NAB Delhi

. Option to appear in next CCC examination to be conducted by
DOEACC, Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, Government of
India

. A netbook loaded with License of NVDA with Eloquence, Lekha,
Sangita and E-speak voices for British, UK and Indian English and Hindi
languages. (If you already own a computer or if you need a laptop or desktop
instead of a netbook, then you may contact Saksham upon selection in any of
the batches)

. Samarth Tools loaded on netbook to write assignments, reading news
papers, referring to dictionary, web browsing, e-mails, reading books,
recording books and lessons, online banking, writing own cheques, listening
to music and much more.

. One year bookshare online library membership with collection of
75000 books in accessible format

. Membership of NAB or Saksham library with collection of 15000
books in talking book or accessible e-text formats

Process:

. Upon Selection, trainees are expected to pay Rs. 10,000/- to
Saksham. (interest-free loan facility is also available for this amount)

. New netbooks will be purchased for each trainee and they will be
trained on these netbooks itself.

. At the end of the training, trainees take these netbooks with them
along with training certificates.

The participants are expected to become independent in using the netbook
computer for reading, writing and communication purposes. And the best part
is that all this will be made possible using genuine softwares without extra
cost.

Boarding and lodging facility is presently not available for this program.
To apply contact the NAB Helpline by phone or email before 15th April 2013.

Respected Anjina Aunty,

One of the things which you can invest on is called vedic maths. These
are basically tips and tricks by which one can orally calculate things
fast. I don't remember any trick right now, otherwise I could have
given an example. But its dam useful specially when one has to appear
for competitive exams. I can recommend you CDs on the same by SDK
Technologies Hyderabad, called speed math tutor. Go anywhere say
bookworld or something simillar, and if you don't get it, do let me
know, if I have one I will courier it to you. When I bought in 2008,
it costed me about 5 600. But whatever the cost may be, its worth
spending. Their website is: www.sdktechnologies.com. I don't think
they respond to emails as such, so please ring them. Accessibility may
be an issue with their products but the CDs are very useful.
Call me up should you need any further information.

@Vasu Bhaiya: Thanks a lot for changing the subject line! I would have
surely missed it :)

Regards

[AI] Summer Programming Workshop at NAB

2009-04-17 Thread NAB Helpline
Hello access Indians

>From May 2 until the end of June, 2009, a first of its kind event is taking
place at the
National Association for the Blind, RK Puram, Sector-5. Professor Arun Mehta
and his
team will lead a hands-on training and software writing workshop in web
programming
using Ruby on Rails running on a variety of platforms, including low-cost
netbooks. For a long time, the visually impaired have sought a highly
portable device with quality text to speech, connectivity and navigation,
but more importantly one that is easy to adapt to
their exact needs. The attempt at this workshop will be to make a big step
in achieving
this goal, using the latest technologies, while training significant numbers
of visually
impaired persons in developing software for this platform. As part of the
programming
effort, modules will be developed to enhance the skid platform for the needs
of special
kids, see skid.org.in. Besides those with visual impairment, a major
beneficiary of such
modules will be children with dyvslexia, who often learn faster with audio
support.
Following in the tradition of Jaws and emacspeak, we believe that the best
way to
develop accessible software is to have persons with the target disabilities
as part of the

development team. Apart from superior insight into desfign issues and
essential testing

skills, disabled persons who will actually use the software all their lives
bring long-term

commitment to the maintenance and upgradation of the software. Computer

programming is a highly creative and well-paid profession that is suitable
for persons

with mobility issues, for the work can be done through the computer and the
Internet.

These reasons were certainly important in our deciding to launch this
innovative

vocational training program, however, this effort gains an entirely new
dimension, if we

consider that software for persons who are visually impaired, also is
accessible to

persons who are illiterate. Hence, this effort at jump-starting software
development for

and by the visually impaired can have significant impact in how quickly the
illiterate people

of India can start using computers, and in the process perhaps gain literacy
as well.
The workshop will consist of one day a week of lectures, tutorials and
demonstrations,

Specifically organized on Saturdays. Participants will be divided into
project teams and

assigned a clearly defined software project. Each project team of maximum 5
members

will receive focussed attention from Professor Mehta or his assistants at a
weekly

meeting scheduled as per mutual convenience.

For visually handicapped persons, the National Association for the Blind is
charging Rs.

2,000/- as fees for this workshop. Students who cannot afford to pay this
fee may apply

for fee concession. A special provision is being made for close friends or
relatives of blind persons attending this workshop. They will receive 50%
discount on the regular

workshop fee, and hence only pay Rs. 5000. Against this, they will commit to
regularly working with, and helping the blind person, in the programming
tasks.

A small number of seats are available for students from the wider community,
who wish

to learn cutting-edge web programming technologies from a team of
international

standard. For this, the workshop fees is Rs. 10,000 only.

Who can apply?

Any person who can use the computer efficiently with the use of screen
reading software

can benefit from this course. If you use the computer and feel that the
computer

should do something more or better than what it is doing now for you, you
could join

this course. If you like to experiment and play with technology, this course
is must for you.

Duration of the Course:

Duration of the course is two months. Classes will be held in the months of
May and

June, 2009. There will be only two formal classes or face to face sessions
in a week. However, computer lab could be made available for more time upon
request and will be

subjected to availability of labs. Students will experience the new way of
interacting and

team work which will prepare them for placements in technology sector.

How to apply:

The application form can be obtained by sending one e-mail to

nabhelpl...@gmail.com . you may fill the same and send it by e-mail to

nabhelpl...@gmail.com as an attachment. selection of the students will be
done on the

basis of an interview to be held on 29th april 2009.
