Hi,
I also encounter this problem on multiple occasions. I suggest you give
"reading mode" app a try. This app is from google and it makes reading on
chrom easy.

Re: [AI] submission to law commission on uniform civil code

2023-07-27 Thread Tony Kurian
Dear Harishji,

Thank you for placing your perspective for the benefit of everyone on
the list. As far as I understand, the petition does not shake hands
with regressive practices. To my mind, the larger point of the
petition is that persons with disability should be consulted while
reforming a regime impacting our lives in a large manner. To quote the
petition: “Hold Consultations
Reform of personal laws, or for that matter any law, should only be
done after wide consultations with all stakeholders. We therefore urge
the Law Commission of India, to not go ahead without adequate
consultations with all stakeholders including the disabled by hearing
their voices and that of their representative groups and
organisations.”

I hope that it is clear from my mail that endorsing the petition is
clearly a choice and not a compulsion by any stretch. With regard to
the last date for endorsement, I understand that petitioners are
constrained by the cutoff date proposed by the law commission. In the
garden of democracy, let a thousand ideas bloom. Any citizen who wishes
to petition the law commission with regard to persons with disability and
UCC can still go ahead with it until tomorrow. I hope that more such
petitions are circulated so that all of us will have the opportunity
to have an informed view.

Regards,
Tony

Re: [AI] Regarding accessibility of kindle devices and content

2023-03-20 Thread Tony Kurian
Hello,
Responding to a few queries here.
1. Why do we need a separate Kindle devise? Well, this is purely a
choice. For people who wish to read uninterrupted, Kindle is a great
choice. With shortening attention span, using Kindle is a way for
reading without distraction.
2. Braille display? Refer the following link.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201829370#:~:text=Press%20the%20Power%20button%20until,tap%20Pair%20Bluetooth%20Braille%20Display.
3. Kindle unlimited? You don’t need a kindle unlimited subscription to
use Kindle devise. Almost all books on Kindle unlimited can be
downloaded from pirate or torrent websites. Well, sorry for mentioning
piracy here, I am a believer in copy left more than copy right.
4. You need to separately buy those books which are not included in
kindle unlimited.
5. You don’t have to convert Kindle books to epub, Kindle books are
super accessible within Kindle devises. On the other hand, if you have
a PDF book downloaded from a pirate website, you can convert it in to
epub and read on kindle devise.
More than happy to connect on this over phone. My contact is 84519 76069.
Cheers,
TK

Re: [AI] Regarding accessibility of kindle devices and content

2023-03-07 Thread Tony Kurian
Hello,
I am a user of Kindle devises for few years now. here is some
information which I hope will be of help for you.
I am not sure about the accessibility of basic kindle devise. Kindle
paper white is accessible. However, you will have to purchase a
separate audio adapter for this. this is because Kindle paper white
does not have a head phone jack or speaker. Ones you plug in the audio
adapter, Voiceview screen reader will start functioning. Note:
functionalities such as note taking, colour marking, annotating etc
are not available when you use Voiceview on kindle paper white.
If you are interested in using Kindle devises, the best solution is
buying Kindle fire HD tablet. I could not find this devise on Amazon
India.you can get this devise from amazon.com and it cost less than
100$. During black Friday, you get this for 45$ or so. do connect with
me offline if you are exercising this option as there are a couple of
minor caveats to follow.
Finally, rather than converting kindle books in to other formats, the
best way to use kindle devices is by converting all books in to epub
and reading them on kindle. It is super portable and you can take
notes etc if you are on kindle fire tab. You can also sink your notes
to kindle pc.
I hope this has been of help. Feel free to write to me if you have any
other clarifications.
Cheers,
Tony

Hello HarishJI,
While the origins of disability pride are linked to ADA, it has now
been celebrated by many countries. In other words, it has transformed
from commemorating ADA to celebrating pride all over the world. Pride
events are also being organized by international organizations.

Re: [AI] Help Regarding Academic Research

2022-05-05 Thread Tony Kurian
Dear all,
A few months ago, Mr. Solomon had written a mail with regard to an
organization for blind and visually impaired academicians. This mail
was about International
Network of Researchers with Vision Impairment and Their Allies
(INOVA). This organization is dedicated to enhancing opportunities in
science for people with vision impairment. About us page on Their
website reads “The International Network of Researchers with Vision
Impairment and their Allies (INOVA) is a network of, and for,
biomedical researchers who are blind or visually impaired. Our mission
is to support career development, engage allies and champions, and
enhance the accessibility and inclusion of biomedical sciences.”
I am not sure whether Mr. Solomon was referring to this organization
in his mail on this thread. As far as I know, there are no WhatsApp
groups existing for blind and visually impaired academicians. For
interested folks, there are mail lists of people working in specific
fields such as disability studies but a general group or organizations
for blind academicians does not exist as far as I know. Others, please
contribute with valuable information on this.
I see this thread as a testimony to the interest for such a group. If
none exists, we can initiate a group where we can discuss our research
related issues.
Regards,
Tony

[AI] news of interest: In a first for Tamil Nadu parties, visually-challenged man is CPI(M) district secretary

2022-01-11 Thread Tony Kurian
In a first for Tamil Nadu parties, visually-challenged man is CPI(M)
district secretary
 by B. Kolappan
An advocate by qualification, B.S. Bharathi Anna entered the party
through its student wing, the Students’ Federation of India.
B.S. Bharathi Anna, a visually-challenged CPI(M) member, has been
elected secretary of the party’s Chengalpattu district unit. This is
the first time a visually-challenged person has become a district
secretary of a party in Tamil Nadu.
An advocate by qualification, Mr. Anna entered the party through its
student wing, the Students’ Federation of India. After completing his
graduation in law from Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College, Chennai,
he started practising in Chengalpattu. “I had vision till the age of
three. Then, what was diagnosed as short-sightedness progressed into
total blindness in 2014,” he said. He was deputy secretary of Tamil
Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front. “The total loss of eyesight
prevented me from working in the field, and I resigned. I also endured
depression. But modern technology came in handy, and I started working
in the unit for the physically-challenged,” he said.
He is also the vice-president of the Tamil Nadu Association For The
Rights of All Types of Differently Abled and Caregivers.

Re: [AI] The appalling ableism on display in S. 15 of the UP Population Control Bill is Matched only by the even more appalling ableism on display in this group by those who should know better

2021-07-21 Thread Tony Kurian
Hello,

I am not someone who posts here regularly but I think I would be
abdicating my responsibility as a person with disability if I do not
state my views on the UP population bill.

At the outset, let me be clear that Sec 15 of the bill is ableist and
is discriminatory towards persons with disability. As Rahul observed,
the bill is giving legal credence to an ableist mindset that signals
to society that it is totally cool not to count your child with
disability as a productive member. As the discussion here has brought
out important points, let me restrict myself to a few observations.
To state that ableism exists on ground hence the ableist provisions of
the bill need no opposition is extremely problematic. That some of our
members have opted for a political submission rather than asking the
right questions and expose the ableism contained in the bill
demonstrates internalised ableism. The job of disability rights
activists (hoping that everyone participating here identifies as one)
is to oppose ableism on all fronts. The task at hand for us is to show
how the bill encourages an ableist mindset and humiliates the dignity
of persons with disability.

Secondly, to call any opposition to the bill as “privilege” is a
deliberate attempt to obfuscate the ableism in the bill. As a person
with disability, if I am talking to a poor person from rural UP about
the ableism in the bill, I am not being privileged. Put differently,
privilege is context specific.

Thirdly, the so-called pragmatic circumstances are continuously
evolving and are amenable to change. We are here because a few
individuals before us decided to change the ground reality and
pragmatic circumstances by striving to opposing ableism. What would
have happened if they had decided not to fight, because ableism is a
ground reality, right?

It is a matter of happiness that organizations like NPRD have come
forward with a clear position on this and hope more organizations join
them in this. We should rightfully demand the government to remove Sec
15 and instead focus on increasing life opportunity for persons with
disability. Rather than denigrating the dignity of persons with
disability, government should focus on measures which will encourage
parents to view their children with disability in a much more positive
light. Put simply, I would like my parents to see me as a person with
dignity and I would like every person with disability to feel the
same.
regards,
Tony

 Dear Friends,

I too don't post often but what Rahul has written has compelled me to
do so. I agree 100% with Rahul and believe that under no
circumstances should this be allowed. In fact, if I understand the
case law correctly, this can be challenged under Art. 21 of
constitution as disabled children are negated.

In fact, I am against ableism of all kinds: even when we are forced
to behave in a particular manner though that may be inconvenient due
to our disabilities as that is the norm in so-called able world, I am
strongly against this. I don't like the use of "normal" word to
describe people who are not disabled. We need not bring privilege or
anything. If millions have problems bringing up disabled children,
there are ample examples to show that disabled who are educated have
done far better than their able-bodied siblings in lives and have
helped their parents/siblings. In any case, population control cannot
and should not be controlled by a law. Education and other measures
could be brought in to do it.

Re: [AI] Disabled Cold Shouldered in Budget

2021-02-02 Thread Tony Kurian
 hello all,
Glad to see a topic that has aroused some interest among the AI community.
But it would have been better if we had confined the focus to the NPRD
statement on the budget rather than bringing in extraneous and
unconnected issues. It would have been good if those having a contrary
view, expressed it based on facts and figures and how they interpret
it. The NPRD statement has relied wholly on information provided in
the Budget papers. If there is a misrepresentation of facts, it needs
to be contradicted. In fact, the statement does acknowledge that
allocations to the NIHMANS Banglore and the Mental health institute in
Assam have increased.
We need to appreciate that activism is hard ball negotiation and
uncomfortable truths will have to be told here. Unfortunately,
analysis of budget numbers reveals some unfortunate and uncomfortable
truths.
While I am not going to all the other issues raised which I feel is an
attempt at maligning an organization that has been doing exemplary
work and has been raising various issues concerning the disabled in
the last few years, I would like to point out that I have not come
across any statement by the NPRD in support of the farmer’s protest,
though personally I would have been glad if they had done it.
Bringing in extraneous issues and attributing motives is
self-defeating and steers us away from the real issue.
Jai Hind.

Titled “market for accessibility services: how these startups got it
right”, we present the case of unique pricing and marketing
strategies adopted by 5 startups in providing accessibility services
and products. All of these startups develop products and services for
visually challenged and is familiar to us.
It would be great if members could share their views on paying for
accessibility services and the pricing models of these startups.

[AI] in need of sources for audio described movies

2019-06-23 Thread Tony Kurian
Dear all,
Hope this mail fined you good.
As the subject line indicates, I am in need of help with finding audio
described movies. As of now I access it through Netflix. A major
source of audio described movies I had was Blind Mice Mart. For some
reason, I am unable to access the same.
It would be of immense help if you could direct me to sources from
where I can download audio described movies. I am also told that there
are a couple of mailing lists for exchanging audio described movies.
Information on the same will also be of great help.
Thanking you in advance,
Tony

Re: [AI] Independent tour: Sikkim tour with Bat Travels!

2018-06-14 Thread Tony Kurian
Hi all,
Just read this well written narrative by Vamsi and thought I should
share my experience with Bat Travels. I was fortunate to be part of
their first trip. It was a paragliding to Kamshet. From the word go,
it was fun till the end. As Vamsi mentioned, everything was described
to us and all safety measures were taken in advance for paragliding.
As a blind tourist, I had missed out on many adventure activities in
the past on account of my disability. The Bat Travel team of Ritu and
Divya had made all the arrangements prior to our visit so that I did
not have to keep telling people about how they should not be
apprehensive about my disability.
I was a part of two more of their trips. One was a beer tasting event
and I could touch and feel multiple ingredients which go in to making
different kinds of beer. The third one was a night camping at Karjet.
We had floating and hanging tends, and some amazing live music. Again,
sighted travellers and teem Bat Travels explained everything in detail
to me.
Having been a part of three of their trips, here are some general
observations. They give priority to our dignity and for me it meant
having the pride of being independent. The groups always became
friendly in a short time and I never had inhibitions about asking
something or sharing any of my concerns. It was like travelling with a
group of friends. Ritu and Divya even being new to the sector
demonstrated some remarkable inclusion. So Ritu has a blind friendly
laughter and Divya comes with a bag full of annoying questions, and
they always made sure an inclusive travel experience. I liked the fact
that I could explore something new through Bat.
Cheers,
TK

hi all,

 So much chaos.
Could any of our members working with RBI, government, or any banking
related sector explain exactly how the accessibility features in the
new notes are supposed to work.
Thanks and regards,

Has anyone amongst this group touched the new 2000 note?
Yesterday I got to feel it and I do not get what special features it
has relating to visually impaired persons as stated by RBI. Of course
I noticed that the length is more and the breadth is little short as
 compared to the previous note.
So, can someone in this list help me read a 2000 note. I am eager to
know. And why only special features in 2000 and not in 500 note?

[AI] help required relating to a strange issue with NVDA

2015-12-21 Thread Tony Kurian
Dear all,
Hope this mail finds all of you in good health.
I am facing a strange issue with NVDA for the past few days. I use
latest version of NVDA on windows 8.1.
While using NVDA, it abruptly stops the reading. The software is
working but it do not read the entire line. Let me put it more
specifically. If I give the continuous reading function, NVDA abruptly
stops reading after half a line. This makes reading huge document a
gargantuan task.
Let me know if any of you faced similar issues or can help me with
solutions for this.
Thanking you in advance,
Warm regards,
Tony

2015-12-21 Thread Tony Kurian
hi,
thanks for the reply.
i did think of that possibility. but even when i try to read with down
arrow key, NVDA fails to read the entire lines. it at times even fails
to read the title of link, heading in a web page ETC.

Tony

Re: [AI] twitter query

2015-09-13 Thread Tony Kurian
Dear Anirban sir,
Yes, the twitter website is accessible. It is easy to read tweets and
do other things such as Tweeting etc. you need to create an account
with Twitter in order to use the service. I do not remember the
accessibility of signing up process with Twitter. I hope it is
accessible.
The twitter app of android is mostly accessible, so is the I Phone and
Kindle app. I am told that there are some twitter client apps
available in android which creates a better accessible experience.
Hope this helps you.

Re: [AI] CCPD!

2015-09-01 Thread Tony Kurian
Dear all,
The fact which George sir pointed out requires immediate attention. I
am not sure how we can go about with this. my suggestion is that we
should bring this to the notice of national media. Can we have our
friends from the media fraternity to share their thought on this. a
scattered minority like that of disabled should use all means so as to
ensure its rights in an adequate manner.
Warm regards,
Tony

[AI] discrimination by spicejet

2015-07-08 Thread Tony Kurian
Dear all,
This is to bring to your notice that spicejet is practicing
discrimination against persons with disability.
At present spicejet requires additional payment of RS 500 per flight
for meet and assist facility. This means that visually challenged
persons cannot fly with the airline without additional charges.
My preliminary reading of the relevant guidelines suggest that this is
in violation of the same. 4.1.7 Once persons with disability or
reduced mobility report at the airport with valid booking and
intention to travel, the airline shall provide assistance to meet
their particular needs and ensure their seamless travel from the
departure terminal of the departing airport upto the aircraft and at
the end of the journey from the aircraft to the arrival terminal exit,
without any additional expenses.
Here is the link to the guideline http://dgca.nic.in/cars/d3m-m1.pdf
I am of the opinion that this should be brought to the notice of the
authorities. What can be done? Did any of you make this additional
payment and notify the airline about the guidelines. Would be great if
all of us can pitch in and do something.
Thanking you,
Warm regards,
Tony

[AI] help with UGC circular on permiting VI to use computers for exams

2014-10-20 Thread Tony Kurian
Dear all,
Hope all of you are fine.
I am told that there is a circular by UGC which permits visually
challenged students to take exams in computers using screen readers. I
am unable to find it online. It would be great if someone could pass
it on.
As I am new to the city of Calcutta, I am not sure of the practices
regarding exams for visually challenged here. kindly revert back if
there are any members who are associated with Jadavpur University.
Thanking you in advance,
Warm regards,
Tony
