[AI] more info on talkback by g. srihari senior lecturer Re: Information about android mobile
Eyes-Free Android This blog details my use of various Android devices with Android Accessibility turned on. In combination with the eyes-free shell, this turns Android into a personal communication device that aids in independent living. and Monday, March 21, 2011 TalkBack Refreshed: Accessible On-Screen Keyboard And More ... Android Access: TalkBack Refreshed 1 Android Access: TalkBack Refreshed The latest enhancements to TalkBack now brings Android Accessibility to devices without a physical keyboard. Many of these enhancements also improve the overall TalkBack experience on all devices. 1.1 Highlights •New TalkBack Keyboard. •On-screen talking keyboard enables text entry via the touch screen. •Text review provides spoken feedback when moving the cursor by character, word, sentence, or paragraph. •Virtual D-Pad for navigating the Android user interface. •Global TalkBack commands enable one-click access to oft-used commands. 1.2 TalkBack Keyboard The TalkBack Keyboard is an Accessible Input Method (Accessible IME) that when activated enables you to enter and review text via the touch screen. To use this feature, you need to first activate the TalkBack keyboard via the Language and Keyboard option in the Settings menu. Next, customize the TalkBack Keyboard to taste via the TalkBack Keyboard Settings option --- here, you can customize additional features including auditory feedback as you type. Finally, open your favorite editing application, long-press on an edit field, and select TalkBack keyboard as your default IME. Note that you need do this only once; once the TalkBack keyboard has been made the default, it persists across reboots. 1.3 Entering Text On The Touch Screen TalkBack keyboard is an on-screen keyboard that supports touch exploration along with synchronized spoken and auditory feedback. This means you can now enter text when using devices that don't sport a physical keyboard. But wait, there's more here than meets the finger at first touch. Once you have activated the TalkBack Keyboard, you can switch the keyboard among three states by long-pressing the volume up/down buttons: Hidden The TalkBack keyboard is not displayed. Navigating You get access to an on-screen virtual D-Pad, along with Back, Home, Search, and Menu buttons. Typing An on-screen qwerty keyboard. My preferred means of using the keyboard is to turn on auditory feedback from within TalkBack Keyboard Settings, as well as having SoundBack active. In this mode, you hear keys as you explore the keyboard along with an auditory icon; picking up your finger types the last key you explored. Typing produces a distinctive key-click. The on-screen keyboard occupies the bottom 1/3 of your screen. While entering text, explore and find the top row, then move above it to hear what you have typed so far. 1.4 Reviewing Text By Character, Word, Sentence Or Paragraph You can now navigate and review text by character, word, sentence or paragraph. Use a two-finger tap to move forward through these navigation levels; a two-finger double tap moves in the reverse direction. Once you have selected your preferred mode of navigation, you can use Up/Down on the physical track-ball/D-Pad, or alternatively, flick up or down on the virtual D-Pad to move forward or backward through the text being reviewed. Note that text review works when the TalkBack keyboard is in either/navigating/ or typing mode; personally, I find it less error-prone on keyboard-less devices to first switch to navigating mode when reviewing text, since it is easy to inadvertently enter spurious text otherwise. 1.5 Using The On-Screen Virtual D-Pad Placing the TalkBack keyboard in navigating mode provides an on-screen virtual D-Pad --- this is especially useful on devices that do not have a physical D-Pad or track-ball on the front of the device. When active, the virtual D-Pad occupies the bottom one-third of the screen, and fast-flicks in that area has the same effect as moving with a D-Pad or track-ball. Tapping anywhere within the virtual D-Pad is the same as clicking with the track-ball. The corners of the virtual D-Pad also provides Back, Home, Search and Menu buttons --- these are especially useful on devices that lack explicit physical or capacitive buttons for these common Android actions. You can explore the virtual D-pad by moving your finger around the D-Pad area; crossing the top-edge of this area provides haptic and auditory feedback that can be used as an orientation aid in finding the virtual buttons on the corners. 1.6 Global Commands In addition, selecting the TalkBack Keyboard as your default input method enables a set of global commands that can be accessed from your physical keyboard --- eventually, we will make these available via the soft keyboard as well. Here are a list of the current commands: Command Description Key Battery Speaks the current battery level menu + B Time Speaks the current date and time menu + T Connectivity Speaks the connectivity st

[AI] Regarding Volume Control
Respected members, I have been facing a problem to the volume control of my computer for quite a long time. When ever I start typing in microsoft word or in any other application, after some times, suddenly the system volume got down vary low. Litterally, I could not able to follow in the out speakers. Usually this problem arise after I type 20/30 minutes. I can feel some delay in the Jaws typing echo and eventually the entire system volume, including that of all media players got dim. For getting back to normalcy, I need to re-boot the system. On the presumption of having infected by some viruses, I have several times formatted the system, but of no use. Now a days, these problem has become frequent so much so that, I could not type hardly longer than 5/10 minutes. Have anyone of you faced this strange crisis? What may be the problem? For resolving this, what I have to do? Your suggestions and guidance will be of immense help. Following are the particulars of my system. [AI] louis braille medal reg.
By Pedro Zurita Louis Braille, who was born two hundred years ago, did not have the chance in his lifetime to witness the unbridled success of his simple but brilliant invention, a system which revolutionised the lives of blind people by opening the doors to knowledge and culture, fields which were hitherto out of bounds to them. The birth pangs were not, however, insignificant. Braille completed his code in 1825, when he was barely 15 years old, but he passed away two years before France officially adopted his system in 1854. For decades his method faced rejection from both teachers at the Young Blind People’s Institute in Paris, where Braille himself studied and taught, and from sighted people. It was even banned for some time, and it was not until 1878 when an international congress held in Paris recognised the braille system, giving it the boost it needed to be implemented gradually worldwide. Since then training, development and independence for blind people have relied largely on this reading and writing system that is now, two hundred years after it was invented, used in practically every language in the world. Although in the past few years many have hailed the replacement of the braille system due to technological breakthroughs, no alternative method capable of substituting it completely has yet been developed. What is more, there are numerous signs that it enjoys rude health as it is used increasingly in everyday settings to enable blind people to become more independent. Braille is still irreplaceable in this respect, as we can see, for example, with the cosmetics firms, food companies and wine merchants who market their products with braille labeling, the European Union directive that makes it obligatory to have braille signage in new lifts, or the fact that since October 2005 all medicines in the European Union must carry braille labeling. Yet more initiatives can be found in the field of citizens’ rights. Countries such as France, Germany, Spain, India, Mexico, Colombia and Costa Rica are using braille to come up with different methods to ensure blind people are able to exercise their vote independently in elections. The logic of an alphabet The simple and logical structure of the braille system is based on the presence or absence of dots in a cell containing two parallel columns, each with three dots. The different permutations of dots in the six-dot cell give us 63 different combinations representing all the letters of the alphabet. Louis Braille based his system on the so-called "night writing" developed by Charles Barbier, a captain in the artillery, to enable the military to send messages in the dark. Braille learnt about this tactile code when he was just 10 years old and, after studying it, he reached the brilliant conclusion that the two columns containing six dots each put forward by Barbier should be reduced to two columns of three, an ideal size for the perception of a fingertip. Braille also showed that the sense of touch was significantly more sensitive to dots than to the linear system used in the code created some years previously by Valentin Haüy. Haüy’s system, which used lines to represent the letters of the visual alphabet, was the one Braille had learnt when he began at the Young Blind People’s Institute in Paris, founded by Haüy himself in 1784. Using this knowledge, Louis Braille came up with a very logical code: the first ten letters of the alphabet are formed using combinations only of the top two rows in the cell; the next ten are the same as the first ten with the addition of the bottom dot in the left-hand column, and the following ten letters use the bottom dots in both columns. After that only the bottom right-hand dot is used, and so on. Punctuation marks are represented by combinations of dots using only the two bottom rows. Louis Braille, however, did not stop after inventing the braille alphabet; he is also responsible for adapting his system for mathematics, creating a clever system of abbreviations, and for music, developing a vertical system that is still used to this day. Braille and new technologies We do not have accurate figures on the number of braille users, nor do we have research showing a correlation between the use of the reading and writing system and academic qualifications. However, from the information we do have and available estimates we can deduce it is used by a minority of the blind and low vision. This is for a variety of reasons, among them the difficulties older people have in learning braille and the high cost of producing braille resource material. In addition, in recent times we have witnessed the development of new technologies based on text to speech which have reduced noticeably the extent to which braille is used, especially because a lot of information and books are easier to get hold of using electronic methods. Both methods, however, far from being mutually exclusive, can complement each other. In the 80s and 90s th

Re: [AI] halp regarding sound card
Dear Nidhesh: Would you be please specific as to what is the actual problem you are facing. From your description, it sounds like the problem that now I am confronting. Since a long time, the system volume of my computer is getting mute vary frequently. When ever we are typing for at least 10-15 minutes, it suddenly goes down and needs to be restarted for getting back to the normalcy. I have several times formatted the system on the assumption of it being caused on account of some viruses, but with out any positive result. Even tried changing sound cards and speakers. But still the problem persists. Now the engineers are pointing towards some possible trouble with the audio chips in the mother board. Would like to know anybody of you respected members in the list have faced this problem? What might be the possible cause of it? Is there any suggestions to resolve it? Your replies will be highly appreciated. Hopefully. With regards. Re: [AI] writing audio CD.
Dear Surya Sir: You can write audio CDs using Nero Startsmart. Select "create audio CD" option under choose category. Pressing tab, you will be prompted to do the next. The rest of the procedure is just like that of creating an mp3 CD. Not: you can add only 15 or 16 files in an audio CD. Hope. It helps. With regards. Re: [AI] Preparing for IAS: may please advice
Dear Ajay Sir: I am greatly inspired to read this mail. Tanks allot for sending such an informative mail. With regards. Hari. - Original Message - From: "ajay arora" To: Sent: Monday, December 14, 2009 11:31 PM Subject: Re: [AI] Preparing for IAS: may please advice Dear Madhav, Any examination is cracked through a winning strategy. The strategy is made through a thorough involvement in the examination process. Only seriousness could sharpen your observation and discriminative powers. Observation powers to choose what is required and discriminative powers to leave what is not required. Putting them in other words, a strategy is made hearing on the knowledge of picking all that information which is essential and discarding all those which are not. Once this is achieved, civil services exam is a smooth Cakewalk! So an honest and serious involvement is necessary. Involvement thus requires studying with full interest and concentration. This leads to a firm grasp over the subject and its various dimensions. The next stage pertains to going through previous year question papers looking at the questions and the perspective through which the same are asked. This either confirms your way of looking at the subject or kindles all together new dimension to analyse the subject when revisited. Those aspirants and candidates who develop this say the UPSC examination is the easiest one! Three other factors, have time and again proved that preparation of Civil services exam and finally achieving the goal is rather an easy job. The three factors are syllabus, planning and implementation. If you look at the syllabus of the Civil Services Exam and the question asked in the exam, you may well realize that the overall thrust of the Civil Services exam is academic. It is also equally true that the academic abilities looked for in the Civil Servants or the Civil Services aspirants are not too narrow in scope. The academic ability tests are broad and liberal in scope. A simple graduate can be a candidate. A simple graduate without an honours degree and a liberal outlook who has taken interest not only in scholastic activities but broadly in every sphere of life and society is an ideal candidate. The Civil Services Exam doesn't look for the scholars, although it is quite a different matter that even lecturers, research scholars pursuing doctorate degrees and doctorates appear for this exam in sufficient numbers. The Civil Services Exam requirement never bothers you with your past academic performance. No matter how many times you may have failed or passed with poor divisions, it would create no hindrance to your appearance in the Civil Services Exam. All you require to appear for the Civil Services Exam is a plan graduation degree in any division. But the thrust of the Civil Services Exam is academics. Its orientation is academic. The question papers in the Exam are akin to exhaustive academic variety. The papers including the compulsory and optional papers give the impression of an exhaustive demand to be met only by a serious academically oriented candidate. The two-hour essay paper is quite strenuous. To write such essays as required in the exam you need to work consistently. Apart from a certain degree of perfection in language, you need to be sound on the front of information as well. Your academic background will be found to be of much use here. The two papers of General Studies are quite rigorous. You need to be well informed on a number of topics. You must be well versed in certain subjects like Indian History, India Geography, Indian Polity, Science and Technology in India etc. to do well in this paper. And remember this is only a paper of it. Besides, you must be well versed in the current events of national and international importance, environment and ecology and international organizations etc. Somethings never change, they stand the test of time. Like the craze for civil services. Opening up of the economy has created plenty of attractive job opportunities for today's youth, but none can match the aura of civil services. The lure of power, being a part of decision-making, opportunity to serve people in different sectors is too great to resist. Hence, civil services continue to attract the brightest of the mind. And I think that the reason for this popularity is not difficult to be seen! Civil Servants get the best pay and perks package. Some of the civil servants enjoy a high media profile despite being wary of publicity. They enjoy enormous clout over people and decision making in the corridors of power. An aura of power and glamour surrounds their personality. My subjects are public administration and history. If you require any material for civil services, particularly for GS, Public administration and history, I can certainly help you out. Is there any way by which I can make the curser in MS word to move to the location where I left before closing the file the last time? Re: [AI] IT sector employment - stark realities...
Hi List, Firstly folks I am sorry to reply on this topic so late but I am running a couple of weeks late in checking my personal mails. I felt it imperative to give a perspective on this discussion. This concept of contract employees is fast gaining ground across corporate India and has been pioneered by the American MNCs. I have worked in two such large MNCs General Electric and now IBM. Contract employment is usually given to non post graduates and for jobs where the skill requirement is relatively low. As contract employees do not figure in the head count, this is one way to keep the figures low and as they do not get some of the benefits of regular employees, it aalso keeps employee costs down. The best part for these corporations is that you do not have to devise a growth path or worry about the employees career development if they are on contract. Now to give you the other side of the story - I have had several contract employees as well as regular staff report in to me and it is my experience that contract employees usually work harder and are more dedicated than regular staff who usually take their job for granted. As they do the real "work", our department would come to a complete standstill if they were absent. I can't say the same about my regular employees / managerial staff. And it used to hurt when these same hard working employees could not join us for our office parties or offsites which were exclusively for regular employees. While I do understand the agony of not being able to grow to one's potential, I believe it is a product of the way the contract system works more than a result of discrimination. I share my cubicle in IBM with a guy from logistics who works extremely hard from 10 am to 9pm and works on saturdays too. This guy was on contract from 2001 till last year when he got regularised, i.e. 6 years to get on the company rolls despite sterling efforts. Finally, I believe that as more and more of us get employed in this country, any discriminatory attitudes will change. Till such a time, let's keep OUR attitude positive and keep at it. Warm regards, Hari -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Harish Kotian Sent: Thursday, June 28, 2007 8:38 PM To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Subject: Re: [AI] IT sector employment - stark realities... Hi Folks Employment opportunities for the PWD in the IT enabled services is a rescent phenomena. It takes some time for the industry to feel comfortable. Those now in this space are the ambassadors for future growth in this area. As it often happens, the genie pigs have to take a larger share of traumma. When we view in a larger canvass, every growth phase starts with expansion and later it moves towards consolidation. Presently we are in the nascent stage. The consolidation stage will take place when we come to a critical mass. I can surely empathise with those effected who would consider this all as pep talk. These words certainly leads to no solution but would be calling to seek more patience which I can understand is fast running out. Towards reaching some solution, I can suggest we have some dialogue like a seminar on employment of the PWD, we call most of the employers who are indulging in some what discriminatory practices and confront them with a cross section of our folks who would put the realities in the right perspective. I don't know how effective this would turn up, but a suggestion to consider. [AI] internship programme
Hi Group, As you may be aware, I work for IBM in Mumbai as a Solutions Specialist. I am also involved in some diversity initiatives one of which is to start an internship programme for disabled candidates. The internship will be only for 2 months and candidates will be given a short term project in those 2 months. The idea is simple - to give a student or a fresh graduate a work experience in a mainstream corporate environment which will give the candidate confidence and also remove doubts in the minds of future employers about the employability of the candidate. Towards this end I have got approvals for 2 interns this year and I hope that the programme is so successful that we can convince our management to have several more candidates for internship next year. If you know anybody who may be interested pl do give them my contact nos. and ask them to call me during office hours on weekdays. My contact nos. are given at the end of the mail. The candidate needs to have the following basic criteria : challenged with any disability - visual, hearing, ortho, etc. in the second or final year of graduation or just graduated in the last couple of years (but not employed) Good with computers (and screen readers if visually impaired) Good English communication skills both oral and written Able to travel between office and home Basic awareness of industry We will be paying selected candidates a stipend as well as a travelling allowance. The candidates will undergo a telephonic interview post which shortlisted candidates will be called for a final interview to our premises. IBM is an equal opportunity employer with a wonderful work culture which encourages diversity and I am sure that the interns will enjoy the experience. Thanks. [AI] Advice required : career in music
Hi list, A sister of one of my good friends has been gradually losing her sight due to RP. She is a highly creative person and excels in composing music and singing, painting and dance. However due to vision loss she has had to give up the painting but continues to pursue her music and dance lessons. For the past year she has been at home after her graduation. She wants to make a career for herself in the creative arts but does not have an idea of how to go about it. Hence I needed your inputs to understand where can one get a formal education / certification in music / arts? She is open to look at international options too and I believe this individual can really make it big with some good training and exposure. I look forward to your suggestions. Thanks. Hi Vishal, I had a similar problem in Excel. All you have to do is 1. Do insert plus S and set the mode to "highlighted" or "none". The problem happens when it is on the "all" mode. 2. open the adjust jaws verbosity drop down by pressing insert V 3. the first option in the list will be "cell verbosity". If it is selected to "contents plus co-ordinates" leave it as it is. If it is on any other option, press spacebar till you come to this option You can now work on Excel to your heart's content! To control the verbosity in Excel you need to see what works for you by manipulating the options in insert S and insert v. For example, if you prefer to have Jaws read the cell co-ordinates before the contents, that is possible too. Hope this is useful. I am facing a problem with Excel. The JAWS doesn't announce the cell reference properly. Say, if I am moving my curser from A3 to A4, first it announces the cell number that is 4, then the contents and finally the cell reference or if I move the curser from A3 to B3, it will say as B, then cell reference and finally B3, because of this problem, I Often get confused between the actual number and the cell reference. Please send me if you have any solution for this problem. I would also like to know whether there is any method where I can make JAWS to speak the contents of a cell without actually moving the curser to that particular cell. I am using Office XP with JAWS 7.0. Thanks in advance Waiting for your reply. Re: [AI] accessibility of stock trading sites
Hi friends, I am also quite keen to know answers to the questions Geetha has raised. Additionally, I would like to know if it is possible to trade on-line and settle payments on-line without need for paperwork or issuing cheques. For example, if the on-line trading account is linked to my bank account then settlement can happen seemlessly without need for issuing cheques. Are there any other issues faced during this process from a VI standpoint? Pl share any experience you may have in this matter. Also, has anyone tried opening these accounts with sharekhan.com? If yes, is it easier to trade on this site? If any of you on this list regularly trade in shares online, please write to me privately. Many thanks. Geetha To unsubscribe send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the subject unsubscribe. Re: [AI] Proposal for starting a separate group on
Hi friends, Frankly I have always felt that topics not central to our charter attract the maximum responses. Having said this, the point has got lost somewhere in the verbal volleys that have been circulating. Noone disagrees that everybody's time IS important and any topic important to any member is not to be trivialised. But the fact is that there are many other groups where such general topics can be raised and an exchange of views sought. And while I can always unsubscribe if I find the number of irrelevant mails too much, as someone had suggested, the fact remains that AI really helps us solve our technology, accesibility and work related problems which is why we cannot afford to get off the list. And that's why we joined it in the first place. However the final say on this matter rests with our moderator Kiran and we have to respect that. If an extended discussion on stray dogs is relevant, if we can discuss reservations and concessions for VIs, and if any other problem faced by Blind and Visually impaired is a part and parcel of this list, why can't we discuss sexual harassment of Blind women? If somebody has joined group to discuss issues pertaining to computers and technology only then i think he/she misjudged the objectives of this group. There has been a persistent argument about the precious time. Please understand Everybody's time is equally important and precious. Do you think when smriti raise this issue, she was free and had no business at all? Is she passing her time by raising such issues? not at all. more over, first one or two lines, even subject can also suggest, what is written in the message. Re: [AI] Do Companies really employ visually handicap person
Hi Rounak, I had addressed this very issue earlier on the list but can't seem to find the mail. I have faced similar problems over the last 6 years of my work life. In fact when I was in campus week at NMIMS (2001), I went through 45 GDs consecutively and inspite of being the topper of my B-school and inspite of cracking all the GDs, I never graduated to the personal interview round. But I maintain that it was my lack of planning and not having anticipated this issue that was to blame. I believe it is up to us to prepare ourselves in such a way that rejection does not occur or at least is minimised. And it is not difficult trust me. I say this not only from my personal experience but also from seeing my sister's NGO at close quarters where nearly 70% of candidates they have trained get the job in the first attempt. I will mail you directly and take this discussion off line.
