[AI] gene therapy for blindness.a B B C news

2008-10-07 Thread MANOJ CHERIAN
,BBC NEWS
'Dramatic results' in eye gene op
US scientists have
claimed success using gene therapy to
try to reverse a severe inherited sight disorder.
They injected material
containing a corrective gene into
the eyes of three patients with Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA).
The journal Proceedings
of the National Academy of Sciences
reports all three showed signs of "significant" improvement in their vision.
UK researchers carried
out a similar procedure on three
patients last year.
They believe the method
could be ready for use within two
years to treat people suffering from some
inherited diseases of the retina, which
affect 20,000 people in Britain.
Within three years,
they believe it could be ready for testing
on people who suffer age related macular
degeneration, a condition that affects 500,000
Britons.
The paper adds to the
body of evidence supporting the value
of gene therapy for people with inherited disease
Dr James Bainbridge
Institute of Ophthalmology
Gene therapy works on a
simple principle - to replace a
malfunctioning gene, and restore function to a
part of the body affected by a genetic
disorder.
In practice, however,
it has proved very difficult to find
ways to introduce the new gene copies in the
correct tissues, and experiments in
animals have had mixed results.
In the eye, however,
gene therapy has shown more promise.
LCA affects
approximately one in 80,000 people, causing
progressively worsening vision, often starting in the first few years of life.
It is responsible for
one in 10 severe sight disorders in
children.
A fault in the RPE65
gene is to blame, and the gene therapy
injects working copies of the gene into the back of the eye.
Just 30 days after the
treatment was delivered into one
eye of each of the three young adults involved in
the US study, the improvements
could be measured.
The researchers, from
Pennsylvania University, the University
of Florida and Cornell University, suggested that
the function of "cones" in the
retina, which are used in daytime and colour
vision, could be boosted up to 50-fold
- a "dramatic" improvement in function.
However, vision in the
treated eyes was not perfect - with
the patients showing an abnormally slow adaptation to low light levels.
UK first
In the UK, scientists
and doctors at the Institute of Ophthalmology
and Moorfields Eye Hospital in London have been
working for some years on a similar
approach.
In 2007, they were the
first to perform a gene therapy operation
on three people with LCA, and earlier this year
reported significant improvement
in one of these.
Dr James Bainbridge,
one of the Institute of Ophthalmology
researchers involved, said the US findings were a
step forward, helping to fine tune
the technique and maximising the chances of success.
He said: "This paper is
important because it provides further
evidence that gene replacement therapy can
improve vision in people with this form
of LCA.
"It also confirms the
prediction that the extent of improvement
depends on the number of surviving target cells
at the time of intervention, and
shows that both rod and cone photoreceptor cells can benefit.
"The paper adds to the
body of evidence supporting the value
of gene therapy for people with inherited disease."
Professor Robin Ali,
who also worked on the UK study, said
the latest paper gave scientists a much better
idea of what dose of gene therapy
would give the best results.
He said: "We can now
begin to find out how much useful vision
is restored by improving retinal sensitivity and
whether the results are better in
young children when we treat the whole retina using a high dose."

[AI] Started treatment for retina in Germany

New Subretinal Stem Cell Treatment for Eye Disease

September 2, 2010

A new stem cell therapy is now available to eye patients using
subretinal placement of adult stem cells. Patients with more severe
eye problems may now
have the opportunity to improve their sight and gain useful vision.

Ridgefield, CT (PRWEB) September 1, 2010

Dr Steven Levy is pleased to announce that
The XCell-Center
in Germany has begun a new treatment for eye patients using
subretinal placement of adult stem cells for ophthalmic disease.
Initial patients included
an individual with Stargardts Disease, a type of hereditary
retinopathy, and a patient with Age Related Macular Degeneration or
AMD.

"To our knowledge this is the first time adult stem cells have been placed
Retina and Optic Nerve
directly beneath the intact human retina as a treatment for eye
disease " stated Dr. Steven Levy, President of
The Acoma Group LLC
and consultant for the XCell-Center. "Stem cells may now be
introduced very precisely into specific locations of the retina where
ophthalmic disease has
destroyed photoreceptors or retinal pigment epithelial cells. Very
tiny areas such as the macula can be treated precisely using extremely
small custom
catheters" he explained. Dr. Levy indicated that adult stem cells may
now be seeded into the subretinal space for hereditary retinopathies
or around the
optic nerve so they may enter the nerve directly. " Although the
XCell-Center continues to have excellent success improving the vision
of many patients
with retrobulbar adult stem cells, some referring ophthalmologists
have asked if it might be more effective to place the stem cells
directly beneath the
retina in certain conditions- as has typically been done in
preclinical studies in animal models, " indicated Dr. Levy. " That
option is now available
exclusively for patients at the XCell-Center which is the first and
only stem cell facility in the world to offer this unique treatment
option".

The Xcell-Center has made a substantial investment in the most
up-to-date surgical instrumentation for this new procedure. Initially
this procedure will
be available for ophthalmology patients who have poor vision with no
abnormal blood vessel growth in the eye receiving subretinal
treatment. For the time
being only one of the patient's eyes will receive subretinal stem
cells with the fellow eye having the standard retrobulbar stem cell
treatment. The XCell-Center
will offer subretinal stem cell treatment to patients with a wide
variety of eye diseases including Age Related Macular Degeneration (
AMD) of the dry
or geographic form, Myopic Macular Degeneration, Presumed Ocular
Histoplasmosis Syndrome (POHS), Chronic Central Serous Retinopathy
(CSCR); Hereditary
Retinopathies including Retinitis Pigmentosa, Stargardts, Cone-Rod
Dystrophy; Optic Nerve Disease including Glaucoma, Ischemic Optic
Neuropathy and Optic
Nerve Injuries. Wet macular degeneration patients may also be
considered for treatment if subretinal neovascularization has been
absent for at least 6
months.

" The XCell-Center will maintain an open policy regarding subretinal
stem cell treatment as they simply don't know what eye problems will
potentially benefit.
Patients with less common eye diseases may be eligible for subretinal
stem cell treatment and will be evaluated on an individual basis by
the ophthalmologists
at XCell " explained Dr. Levy.
" Retrobulbar stem cell treatment has been very successful for many
patients and will continue to be offered. Improvements in visual
acuity have ranged
up to 52-74% on the LogMAR scale. That technique is an especially
important option for active wet macular degeneration patients."

The XCell Center in Germany is a leading provider of adult stem cell
therapy for many acute and chronic diseases in adults and children.
Patients from the
United States, Europe and throughout the world currently travel to
Dusseldorf and Cologne to obtain sophisticated treatment that is
unavailable in their
own countries.

"The XCell-Center believes that subretinal placement of adult stem
cells may provide greater visual improvement for patients suffering
from a wide variety
of eye diseases" says Dr Levy. " We're entering a truly exciting time
in regenerative medicine where adult stem cells are reversing many
disease processes
and repairing damaged tissue successfully".

[AI] Some eye exersises

2012-01-19 Thread manoj cherian
Dear friends, let me give you some eye exercises, that has been
prescribed by a yoga teacher. Please use this exercises only after the
discussion with your ophthalmologist.

Exercise 1: Massage Close your eyes tight for 3 to 5 seconds, then
open them for the same amount of
time. Do this 7 or 8 times then keep your eyes closed and massage them
with your fingers doing circular movements for 1-2 minutes. Make sure
it is a light
massage to avoid damage to your eyes. Another massage method is to
press three fingers against your upper eyelids, holding for several
seconds then releasing,
Repeat this process five times. Exercise 2: MovementSit and make
yourself comfortable. Then roll your eyes clockwise, then
anticlockwise. Blink, then
repeat. Do this five times. Exercise 3: Mark on glassSitting two feet
away from a window, make a mark on the glass at about eye level ( a
small sticker
is a good idea). Now, look through this mark, focusing on something
over yonder for 10 to 15 seconds, then come back and focus on the mark
again. Exercise
4: Follow a pencilTake a pencil in your hand then stretch your hand
out in front of you. Slowly move the pencil toward your nose, while
trying to follow
it with your eyes doing your best to keep it in focus. Repeat 10
times. Exercise 5: Writing on the WallOn the wall across from you,
pretend that you are
writing words with just your eyes without turning your head. It may be
hard to at first, but after a bit of practice, it can end up being
kind of fun.
The bigger the letters you make, the better the effect this exercise
will have. Exercise 6: Watching the clockPretend that you are standing
in front of
a really big clock, look at the center of the clock, then move your
eyes to any of the hour marks without turning your head. Go back to
center, then go
on to another hour mark. When you hit all the hour marks, then you can
stop. You can even do this exercise with your eyes closed. While
doing these exercises
might make you seem a little crazy if your roommates or neighbors spot
you doing them, 10 to 15 minutes each day will really help improve the
overall health
of your eyes. It is important to do them on a regular basis rather
than just once for an extended period. 30 seconds to a minute each
hour would be ideal.
You can do these exercises while waiting for the microwave to finish
heating up your oatmeal or when your PC is booting up. After the first
day, you will
began to notice results.

HOME REMEDIES FOR RESTORING YOUR EYESIGHT

Prepare two small linen bags and put 1 table spoon of dill seeds in
each bag. Tie them up and put each bag in a cup with boiling water for
2 minutes. Let
the bags cool a little bit and apply them on your eyes as compresses
(the temperature should be comfortable for you). Cover the bags with a
plastic wrap/bag
and then with a rolled towel. Leave it for 15 minutes. Do it every
night before you go to bed.If for some reason you do it during the
day, stay in a bed
for another 20 minutes after removing the bags from your eyes (still
keep your eyes covered with a towel). Repeat treatment every day.Your
eyesight will
start restoring after the 20th procedure. The treatment is for 30-45 days.
Thanks for reading! If you know someone who could benefit from this,
feel free to forward it to them.

[AI] Tuching sensation to our coins

2011-11-08 Thread manoj cherian
Dear list, I am sharing a problem that I have fazing now a days
regarding the identification of our coins through touching sensation.
Earlier the 5 Rs coin was very thick enough to sense it easily, but
the new coin is almost similar to the 50 pysa coin. Likely the past 2
rs coin can be easily identified with its edge, but now it is very
similar to the 1 Rs coin. Is there any method to identified this
different type of coins? And also flow some light, how to make clear
about, with the touching sensation of our currency nots?. Regards
