Re: [AI] Enablers for the disabled
Price of the device can be 1 of the hindrances in popularizing the gadget. Presently, rs 100 is the price of the cane. You will need to pay 20 times more which would not be possible for everyone. If you happen to break or damage your cane, you can always spend another rs 100 and go for a new one. But here it would be difficult to afford another rs 2000 in case you need to purchase another sophisticated cane should you damage it. - Original Message - From: Vamshi. Now, try walking around your home without stubbing your toes on furniture or banging into walls. Frustrating, isn’t it? Imagine how much worse it would get if you had to navigate like this in unfamiliar territory. Well, more than 15 million visually impaired people – and that’s in India alone – live their lives in such darkness. Now, imagine what it would be like to wake up one day, and realise that your body refuses to co-operate with you. Simple tasks like changing a TV channel, or switching on the lights turn into tedious chores. Yet, millions of people from across the country – suffering from diseases such as muscular dystrophy and arthritis – live with these challenges everyday… Thankfully, there are a few techies out there who are working on gadgets that could help make the lives of these people slightly better… SMART CANE DEVELOPED BY: IIT-Delhi along with Phoenix Medical Systems Pvt Ltd WHAT DOES IT DO: Uses bat-like echolocation, and vibrating mechanism to guide blind users CURRENT STATUS: Preliminary tests successful; could be launched in India next year Four IIT-Delhi undergrads – in collaboration with Phoenix Medical Systems Pvt Ltd – have developed a Smart Cane that can sense obstacles up to three metres away. It accordingly vibrates to provide blind users with navigation cues. “Our Smart Cane also alerts users if a fast-moving object or person is moving towards them,” says Rohan Paul, who created the device along with Dheeraj Mehra, Vaibhav Singh, Ankush Garg. The technology is simple: The cane is equipped with an ultrasonic transducer and a vibrator. The former transmits high-pitched sound waves that get reflected from anything in front of it. Vibrations are then produced to give the blind person an indication that something lies ahead. “Our product will cost Rs 2,000 and we’ve already received calls from interested buyers in India, Kenya, Nepal and Pakistan,” says Paul. The cane – powered by a rechargeable Li-Ion battery – can be charged like a cellphone, making it convenient. “We carried out tests at an obstacle course specifically created for visually-impaired users,” Paul informs. “Tables, railings, necklevel horizontal bars and chairs were some of the obstacles that had to be avoided to complete the course. The collision rate was significantly reduced amongst the 30 users when they used the new cane. We are now working towards releasing it in the market by next year.” JELLOW DEVELOPED BY: IDC, IIT-Bombay WHAT DOES IT DO: Toy-like gadget helps children with cerebral palsy communicate needs and emotions CURRENT STATUS: Final stages of testing Jellow – equipped with six buttons that can be pressed, thumped and squeezed just like squishy jell-O – is a new gadget meant for a special category of children. Designed by the students at Industrial Design Centre (IDC), IIT-Bombay, the idea behind the “toy” is to help cerebral palsy kids communicate emotions. The buttons are placed on a circular disc, to make Jellow look like a toy, rather than a “complex and inhuman” thingamajig. “Allowing children with special needs to express their emotions remains an unaddressed area,” says Dhairya Dand, one of the student developers. “I believe in ‘humanizing technology’ where it becomes a natural extension of ourselves,” he adds. The basis of the product is what the developers call an Emotional Language Protocol (ELP). ELP, which works as Jellow’s interface, is driven by colour, shape, motion and sound; corresponding to the sensory modes of the visual, the tactile and the aural. In addition to this, a catalogue of everyday vocab—food, play, study—categorized hierarchically, has been built. If one taps on food, the subcategories of lunch, dinner and breakfast appear, and tapping on lunch further displays options like chapati, rice or dal. “The kid can also tap on any of the emotion buttons, which would help him express how he feels,” explains Dand. Jellow’s first prototype was built by students in 2007, under the guidance of IDC professor Ravi Poovaiah. And today,

As I have stated earlier, We should not at least commit such mistakes which could be termed as silly or stupid mistakes, that can be easily avoided. When we spend 15 2 20 minutes for writing a mail, can we not give a single minute to revise what we are going to send others to read, and make corrections if there are any?. The mistake committed out of ignorance can be understood, but, when you say that you don't need to be taught and yet you demonstrate the need to be taught, the trouble starts there, that's all and nothing else. - Original Message - From: Pradeep Gupta gupta.pradeep...@gmail.com To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Friday, November 12, 2010 10:35 PM Subject: Re: [AI] No Subject Hello, if a smmall gramatical error is so important, then what about friends like Austin Pinto, who never uses any punctuation in his mails! [AI] Major Technical Difficulties
Behind closed doors in Washington, American officials are shaping an overhaul of the 1994 federal statute that requires phone and broadband carriers to ensure their networks can be wiretapped. Related a.. Times Topic: Wiretapping and Other Eavesdropping Devices and Methods Based on a chilling recent precedent, the risk is substantial that this so-called technical updating will spread far beyond what's said to be contemplated - and greatly expand the already expansive power of the government to spy on Americans. Congress should be especially cautious about the scope of the revision. The precedent is the 2008 amendment of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA. While it also needed updating to keep pace with technology, the Bush administration added measures that sanctioned spying without a warrant, without suspicion, and without court approval. Retroactively, it gave legal cover to more than five years of the administration's illegal spying. Congress turned those provisions into law. The Obama administration has no similar tracks to cover, but the risks of executive overreach are still there. It's essential for Congress to be deliberate about providing a check on the executive branch and striking a balance with other American interests. In September, The Times reported that officials were preparing to seek sweeping new regulations for the Internet, so that all communications services - e-mail transmitters like BlackBerry, social networking Web sites like Facebook, peer-to-peer providers like Skype - will be able to comply with a wiretap order as online communications increasingly replace phone calls. Last month, The Times reported that it's not just new technologies that officials are focusing on, it's those already covered by the 16-year-old law, like phone and broadband carriers, because they have begun new services and made system upgrades that caused technical problems for surveillance. The government's contention is that it seeks only to maintain its ability to conduct surveillance so that it can engage in legitimate spying via new technologies with the same proficiency that it can via old ones. If the goal were as straightforward as that, it would be difficult to challenge. Despite its abuses, wiretapping has long been accepted as a tool of law enforcement when used properly. The problem is that the hub-and-spoke design of phone and broadband communication is very different from the decentralized design of the Internet - and even more so from peer-to-peer connections. If, as some experts say, requiring Internet providers to be able to unscramble encrypted messages or intercept any transmitted communication also calls for them to function like centralized carriers, the shift will reverse what made the Internet - and made it a fount of economic growth. The huge scale of the potential disruption underscores how little we know about why this overhaul is needed. Officials have recounted how some carriers have been unable to carry out wiretap orders and how the F.B.I. has spent tens of millions of dollars to help fix the problems. But there is no public data about how often a communication service's technical makeup thwarts surveillance approved by a court. Congress must understand why these changes are so pressing before it considers the likely major new legal requirements needed to ensure that new technologies can be wiretapped. Re: [AI] 'Signatures' Special Formalities for passport?
I would like to recount My personal experience in this regard. During my rehabilitation training in Mumbai, my instructors tried their level best to teach me write my signature for 3 full months, but due to lack of strong inner desire, no immediate utility and absence of compulsion I was as illiterate as I was 3 months before as far as signature was concerned. But the story was totally different when I went to Delhi for training in Stenography at AICB. There the banks told me, I can not open my bank account unless I can make my signature. Whether you believe it or not, but I could open my account only after 3 days with my own signature.- Original Message - From: Shadab Husain shadab...@gmail.com To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Thursday, October 14, 2010 7:43 AM Subject: Re: [AI] 'Signatures' Special Formalities for passport? Hello, No urgency at all. I tried learning signing, using that scale which small kids use, in which you have letters as blocks and there that much space you need to move your pen and the letter is made. But again it requires hell lot of practice and I didn't find this idea of learning shape that useful. Then I also thought of an option to make one scale of your name itself so just move the pen in those blocks, and you can sign that. But then it might be not valid because what if someone steals that scale? Although legally I think hand writing experts report can be obtained to make it valid in case of any dispute. But don't know whether I am in right direction or not. Can you give me any other idea for learning on how to sign? Somebody also told that on Eyeway radio show there was a mention of some card board, but he didn't know in detail as to what it was and from where to get it. I am totally blind by birth, no idea of shapes of letters, have both plastic and aluminum signature guides. I am not going on 15th now, won't be signing that illiteracy declaration for sure, first of all I will give my 100% effort for learning signature. Now there will be no otherwise kind of situation to this. If I want passport, I will learn signature. That's it. By no chance I want to sign any such illiteracy declaration. I remember, when I went for opening my bank account, my manager very politely said Don't mind, you are pursuing Law, so, why don't you learn signing the form? I know you are educated, but still it is the thinking, that if you put thumb impression, it means you are illiterate. Though I just explained the problem that due to no vision many a times letters differ bit. This provision of considering persons with thumb impression as illiterate was enshrined in our constitution at the time of making, which is not wrong because it gives protections to rural masses, but makes no difference between the literate and illiterate person. I must appreciate CDSL's approach towards this, while opening demat account, they give instructions to the depository participants to put a remark for we VI as Person with visual impairment and thumb impression. This directly or indirectly shows that they do make distinction between an illiterate and literate person. Anyways no doubts, the experience of all accessindians will make my task easier. So, a kind request from all of you to please share your views on learning signature on or off the list. And thanks, for this good and positive approach. Looking forward for ideas which may help me in my way. Namdeo, Thanks for your note. However. There was no mention that Ratina India do make arrangements for accommodation to local participants. Indeed, it cannot make arrangements for accommodation for people coming from outside but as mention guidance shall be provided to find a accommodation. Hope that clarifies. Zainab, do you have anything to add? Now since you have organised it, you should not take trouble of inviting those members who are not the residents of this city. - Original Message - From: Rohiet A. A hacker has discovered a way to force ATMs to disgorge their cash by hijacking the computers inside them. The attacks demonstrated on Wednesday targeted standalone ATMs. But they could potentially be used against the ATMs operated by mainstream banks. Criminals have long known that ATMs aren't tamperproof. There are many types of attacks in use today, ranging from sophisticated to foolhardy: installing fake card readers to steal card numbers, hiding tiny surveillance cameras to capture PIN codes, covering the dispensing slot to intercept money and even hauling the ATMs away with trucks in hopes of cracking them open later. Computer hacker Barnaby Jack spent two years tinkering in his Silicon Valley apartment with ATMs he bought online. These were standalone machines, the type seen in front of convenience stores, rather than the ones in bank branches. His goal was to find ways to take control of ATMs by exploiting weaknesses in the computers that run the machines. Jack hacked into ATMs by exploiting weaknesses in the way ATM makers communicate with the machines over the internet. He said the problem is that outsiders are permitted to bypass the need for a password. The remote style of attack is more dangerous because an attacker doesn't need to open up the ATMs. Voice your thoughts in the blog to discuss the Rights of persons with disability bill at: http://www.accessindia.org.in/harish/blog.htm To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe.
