Re: [AI] [SayEverything] please sign this pettition for passing the pwd bill.
Dear Friends, to my knowledge, this new PWD bill is not a strong or effective one because after going through some portions and after having discussions with other disability groups, i came to understand that some of the disabilities are not given full independance with reference to shaping or deciding their rights. moreover, 5% for whole disabled community is not an appreciatable percentage when we take even the rough sensus into account. so in my opinion, this bill should be again refered to the public forum and should make necessary changes in line with UNCRPD thanks regards raghu On 1/11/14, Shireen Irani wrote: > hi all, > > i received this mail from change.org to sign this pettition for the > pwd rights bill. > please take some time out and sign it. it might go a long way in > creating pressure for the bill to be passed. > please read below and sign the pettition. > thanx. > > > -- Forwarded message -- > From: Pradeep Raj > Date: Sat, 11 Jan 2014 03:08:01 + > Subject: shireen, People With Disabilities > To: shireen@gmail.com > > I am a person with disability. [AI] Please read about the technology centre in Chennai
Dear Friends, Hope everyone is fine there. Please go through the article given below about the technology centre which is run only by the visually challenged youth and supported by Rotary and share your feedback With the help of latest technology, Karna Vidya aims to make information more accessible to visually-impaired students. T.S. Atul Swaminathan reports A new centre for visually impaired students called Karna Vidya Technology Centre has been started by Rotary Club of Madras Coromandel (RCMC), in collaboration with Rotaract Club of Drishti. Equipped with 20-seat computer classroom, the Centre trains students from weaker sections, to enhance their education. “Karna Vidya means learning through hearing. Visually challenged students have enormous capacity to learn and gather information through their keen hearing capabilities,” said G. Balasubrahmanyan, former president, RCMC. The assistive technologies makes information accessible to them. “The Centre, which began in May this year, uses screen magnifier for partially visually-impaired and conversion of information in to accessible format through Digital Access Information System,” he added. It also has a Scanning and Reading Appliance Camera Edition, which is a next-generation self-contained scanning and reading appliance for the blind and those with low vision. “At present, we are offering two four-month courses – Computer Application with Screen Readers, and Soft Skills Development. The Centre trains the students to get employed in IT companies and IT Enabled Services as soft-skills trainer and technical trainer. We are planning to introduce courses for Post-Graduate and Doctorate students and professional and business courses such as Law and Information Technology,” said K. Raghuraman, Co-ordinator, KVTC, and Professor, Department of English, Government Arts College for Men, Nandanam. Plans are in the pipeline to prepare students for State Government examinations in various departments and establish a placement cell. “We want to create an independent and accessible learning atmosphere and impart professional and technical training programmes to enhance students’ competence. After the basic courses we will introduce advanced ones focusing on employment,” he added. KVTC is a Rotary Foundation Grant Project in partnership with Rotary District, Finland. The Centre is located at RR Tech Park, Thiru Vi Ka Industrial Estate, Guindy. For details, contact K. Raghuraman at 98400 18012. [AI] accessible a c library at chennai
Free access to Anna Centenary Library initially Special Correspondent “State has approved idea of meeting expenditure through membership fee” — Photo: S.R. Raghunathan LAUNCH:Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi lighting the traditional lamp to mark the inauguration of the Anna Centenary Library in Chennai on Wednesday. CHENNAI: The Anna Centenary Library (ACL) will provide free access to one and all initially. A formal membership drive will begin after a few months, according to G. Arivoli, Director of Public Libraries. In the initial months, the library's authorities will study the profile of users before launching the drive. This will be critical for them as the State government has approved in principle the idea of meeting the maintenance expenditure through membership fee, the official says. As for the facilities at the library, Thangam Thennarasu, School Education Minister, explains that the authorities have decided to adopt an integrated library management system that includes automated issue and return of books, user smartcards, access controls, Radio Frequency Identification and Detection (RFID) technology and self-check counters. Books in Tamil, English and other languages have been sourced from 1,000 leading publishers. Over 500 fully networked high performance workstation personal computers and leased-line broadband connectivity of 100 Mbps with dedicated optical fibre cable (OFC) network are other features. The library has been designed to accommodate 1,250 persons. An auditorium of 50,000 sq. ft. with a seating capacity of 1,280, an amphitheatre that can accommodate more than 800 persons and two conference halls of the capacity of 151 and 30 persons are some of the facilities available. A dedicated children's section, spread over 15,000 sq. ft., has a fun-filled theme-based reading area with multimedia kits and storybooks. The library has a high-tech Braille section with talking books and Braille display. Residential facilities for research scholars have been made. Provision has been made for parking of vehicles. About 420 cars and 1,030 two-wheelers can be parked. -- cheers raghu Voice your thoughts in the blog to discuss the Rights of persons with disability bill at: http://www.accessindia.org.in/harish/blog.htm To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. [AI] think about this.
Madhu (right) with her mother Sultana Begum The descendant of the emperor currently ekes out a living by running a tea stall with her mother By Subir Bhaumik BBC News, Calcutta A descendant of India's last Mughal emperor has been rescued from a life of penury in Calcutta by getting a job with the state-run Coal India. Madhu is the illiterate great-great-granddaughter of emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar and has been employed to run errands in Coal India's offices. A letter of employment will be formally handed over to her by the coal minister at a function in Calcutta next month. She and her mother currently run a tea stall in the slums of Calcutta. Rehabilitation "It will be great to have Madhu working for us. Actually, it will be a great tribute to the last Mughal emperor who played a key role during the first war of independence in 1857," Coal India Chairman Partha Bhattacharyya said. Bahadur Shah Zafar Bahadur Shah Zafar was the last of a long line of Mughal emperors The move by Coal India follows sustained efforts by a Delhi-based journalist Shivnath Jha, who launched a campaign to rescue her from poverty. Madhu's cause was one of several highlighted by Mr Jha and his wife Neena in an initiative to rehabilitate descendants of the forgotten heroes of India's independence wars. Mr Jha told the BBC that he first hit upon this idea when he tried to raise funds for one of India's greatest classical musicians, Bismillah Khan, earlier in the decade. "We published a pictorial biography of Bismillah Khan and raised some funds. After his death, we institutionalised this movement," Mr Jha said. Last year, he persuaded India's former Railway Minister Laloo Prasad Yadav to help the descendants of Tantia Tope, one of the leaders of the 1857 mutiny which many Indians say was in fact the country's first war of independence. 'Barely survive' "Two of his great granddaughters were given employment by the Container Corporation of India on Mr Yadav's intervention," Mr Jha said. Bus in Calcutta The pair live in poverty in one of the most crowded cities in the world In 2009 Mr Jha began promoting the cause of Sultana Begum, the poverty-stricken widow of Muhammad Bedar Bakht - a direct descendant of Bahadur Shah Zafar - who died in 1980. Ms Begum has five daughters - all are married except for Madhu, her youngest daughter. "My other daughters and their husbands are poor people, they barely survive, so they cannot help us," she said. "We have been living, but God knows how." The tea shop run by Sultana and her daughter earns the pair a subsistence income. Mr Jha said that he hoped to provide the pair with more funds by donating money raised from the sale of a book about Indian prime ministers. Another industrialist-philanthropist, Madhusudan Aggrawal, owner of Ajanta Pharmaceuticals has also offered help. "Mr Aggrawal has promised a house for Sultana and a small job for her in a school run by his company," Mr Jha said. If all works out, Sultana Begum and her daughter can surely look forward to moving out of the slums of Howrah, a decrepit industrial area. Bahadur Shah Zafar was placed on the throne in 1837. He was the last of a line of Mughal emperors who ruled India for three centuries. In 1857, when Indian soldiers mutinied against their British masters, Bahadur Shah Zafar was declared their commander-in-chief. Mr Zafar was exiled to Rangoon after the British crushed the mutiny in 1858, where he lived for five years until his death at at the age of 87. regards raghu. friend the association that i am speaking is run totally by blind people themselves. it's totally of the blind, for the blind, and by the blind and moreover i am not much aquainted with any association which is run by sighted. so my humble request is that just try to believe in collective force rather than in individual strengths. well, again i extend my hands in participating in any concrete social activity. regards raghu. it may be true in a very few cases.. but as as our friend said one instance cannot charecterise the whole. in fact an association in tamilnadu has so far made many drastic changes in the lives of the visually challenged. but this does not mean that i am the spokes person of that association. my point is simple that each individual should share responsibility and should involve in concrete activities rather than speaking a lot. moreover we must understand the reality that only when we become a unified force we could not only uplift our community but also we could be a part and parcel of the main stream. so friends just think . regards raghu. [AI] yes true vinod
i truely agree with vinod that many of our visually challenged friends feels complasent after they got well placed in their lives. to overcome this attitude we must all accept that we are all truely brothers and sisters living in a single home. also we must understand that all of us are getting many things from our society to shape our lives and hence it becomes imperative on our part to give them back with utmostt sense of gratitude in the form of conducting and participating in various social activities such as motivating visually challenged friends to join schools, creating awareness about various employment opportunities assisting them with proper guidence whenever required and so on and so forth. so let us all join hands to shape our society in all possible ways and in this regard i extencd my fullest co operation always. [AI] well written
friend, it's really well written article. as you have stated the importance of braille literacy, we in chennai conducted braille reading and writing competitions to mark the occasion of the bi-centenary year of louie braille for students ranging from primary to highersecondary level. this is well recieved by everyone and totally 45 schools participated including the open schools and 99 students displayed their skills. the most important feature in this competition is that we have recorded the reading competition simultaneously inorder to study the status of both the braille and the reading skill of the students. We have the cassettes for a deep analisis and thought of using them as samples for future researches. but the results are very disheartening because as the student reaches the higher level he forgets the braille itself and feels proud to say that he doesn't know "Braille" But one must understand that "Braille deepens one's knowledge and Computer widens one's knowledge." so let us try to promote braille literacy at all levels as much as we could. i am always ready to participate in any concrete social activities and hence you can seak my help if required. regards raghu. > There was a time, not long ago, when most people thought that blind > people could never learn to read. dear sasi, really you have a lot of potensials to deliver now. i say this not just motivate but because now you are a student of literature who has a mastery over the language. so with the power of language and a sense of creativity you could pen many articles both in blogs and to newspapers and magazines. moreover as you know, there are many of our friends who are struggling to speak in english. to whom you could be a good spoken english teacher. also you could write NET exams and be qualified as a JRF candidate and with government's stiphon you could persue PHD. otherwise you could be a lecturer in any college. so now you have started to mould your real metal. hence continue to shape it well and sure it will yield good fruits in near future. if you want further help or any assistance dont forget to count on me. regards raghu.
