Re: [AI] Bookbole announcement!
I had attended the AI get together at Banglore where we had a presentation by someone from Inclusive planet, and when asked about the copyright issue, they had replied stating that they would go ahead with it ,and if someone sues, a big noise would be made taking it to the notice of the government in this way. They went on to add that there would be some buzz around when 100 or thousand blind persons are sued which would gather the attention of the country. Being an Access India member, I thought it is my responsibility to share the information about their attitude, especially when the matter is a sensitive one. One last thing which I don't know, are libraries like NAB and others authorised to convert books into accessible formats and distribute them? If that is not illegal, I don't understand why this would become illegal. There are so many web sites like www.esnips.com and www.4share.com which are already providing these kinds of services. Why aren't they sued so far? Personally, I don't mind to be sued along with thousand other blind persons in a copyright issue. In fact, I would take it as an opportunity to take it to the notice of all as to why I had to do so and what were the facilities,or rather lack offacilities, which prompted me to do so. Having said this, I must accept that I don't have any idea about the punishments in such a case -- G. Re: [AI] Bookbole announcement!
Please take the following points as something simply coming from a lay person. It is important to pose the fundamental question: How many publishers offer or even sell their books in accessible format for the visually challenged customers? Very few worldwide and virtually mill in India. Given that one can use this as a tool to handle any possible copyright issue arising as the result of making copyrighted materials available online. Also remember that libraries are suppose to lend books for their patrons anyway and do they lend those books in accessible format? Recently amendments have been introduced in US copyright laws and I have been told that it bears accessibility in mind. So such amendments need to be studied and based on that the Indian legal system should be pressed for further reforms in this matter. But in my view, libraries are entitled to make materials in accessible format available online even within the existing laws provided that they restrict accessibility to the visually challenged persons by assigning user ID for each member. They could also include notices such as: materials found here are for personal usage only and not to be distributed or sold to others. Perhaps someone else can comment on this from the legal perspective. Regards, Vetri. - Original Message - From: Vamshi. [AI] Bookbole announcement!
Dear Friends, As many of you are aware, The Centre for Internet and Society (CIS) is extremely dedicated to the cause of securing access to knowledge for the print disabled in India. While we took our first baby steps in this area only a year ago, we have nevertheless, with your support, managed to make a significant difference in terms of raising awareness, conducting capacity building trainings and working towards policy and practical change for securing the right of persons with disabilities to access electronic information. Our vision is that persons with print impairments should have access to reading materials in accessible formats at the same time and no extra cost as their sighted counterparts. To achieve this, we have set up a library of books with multiple formats which can be accessed by persons using screen readers. However, this is just a small beginning and I count on each one of you to treat this as your own personal library and undertake the task of filling it with all the books and e content at hand, and help us make this become one of the world's richest and most actively used libraries. To enable you to easily upload books, we have set up a dedicated file server to support the library which will allow us to upload and download books in a simple and seamless fashion. Our library can be accessed through Bookbole, a website which has been designed specifically for use with screen readers. Bookbole provides an enhanced functionality of allowing users to find, share, and manage personal libraries and is at the same time very easy to navigate. This website has been developed by Inclusive Planet, a social venture involved in creating web based products and services for the differently-abled. So please start uploading books and building our Library collection today! Three simple steps to upload books onto the library- Step 1: Login Log on to www.bookbole.com , by using your email id and creating a password Step 2: Install the Bookbole Bookloader The Bookbole Bookloader can be downloaded and installed from the Navigation section of the website. Step 3: Upload Publish You can upload your entire collection of books by using the The Bookbole Bookloader which allows you to upload multiple files and folders. Once the books get uploaded, go to the personal library section, which is under the Navigation section of the site. The uploaded books will reflect in the private books section of your personal library. To share it with the entire community, you will need to click on publish so that your books will now be available for searches on the site! If you are having any trouble with navigation or using any of the features provided on the site, or if you have ideas to further improve Bookbole, please write to cont...@bookbole.com However, while this is also just the beginning for all of us, we want to ensure that there are at least a few books of interest for everyone who uses this site. So please do upload books in your collection which you value very much, and have the satisfaction of knowing that you gave this to others to read, to experience and to cherish as you yourself do. Let that special book be special to someone else too- someone to whom you reached out through your contribution to the library. Let us join hands and connect the world by sharing knowledge!
