Re: [AI] Voting experiences
I am a voter in Nagpur lok Sabha constituency.. When I entered the polling booth with my escort, the presiding officer immediately jumped to accost us and candidly asked my escort whether the person is andhaa, blind. When he replied in the affirmative, he was immediately asked, whether he, i.e. the escort would cast my vote. Though I sensed that the assertions proceeded out of linguistic ignorance rather than any manifest intent to dishonor democracy or disability, I took charge of situation and reprimanded presiding officer for his ignorance and presumptuousness. He immediately saw the sense, and from then on the process proceeded smoothly. Though EVM machine had labels in Braille, they were far from perfect. They had no idea of a Braille ballot. Instead, the asked me to take assistance of escort in reading out the candidates and serial numbers. I made them understand the absurdity of the idea, which they acknowledged. I voted and did register the complaint in writing about lack of Braille ballot paper with candidate names, parties and serial numbers which of course was displayed prominently in print at the entrance.. Due to lack of time, I did not call media, nor pursue the matter further than filing the complaint... However, a friend of mine from Amravati tells me she had the smooth experience, with EVM labeled, and braille ballot being provided when she demanded it. They were not aware that it is a ballot in braille, but a mere paper it was to them, upon which she told them what it was, and also that it should be given to any blind voter visiting, unasked... -Original Message- From: AccessIndia [mailto:accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in] On Behalf Of Kotian, H P Sent: Thursday, April 10, 2014 2:37 PM To: AccessIndia: a list for discussing accessibility and issues concerning the disabled.
