[AI] Where is my Right to Vote?
Hi Pasting a post which failed to get to the list. Harish. Quoting: Hi friends, Persons with visual impairment have right to participate in political activities as equal with others. The issue of inaccessibility has been major challenge to restrict the person's mobility and exercise their franchise. There are government provision (Supreme court order, 2004) to ensure right of the blind people to vote. Inspite of the fact, most of the people can't give their vote due to lack of facilities and ignorance. I am doing my preliminary research aiming to knock the door of the election commission of India. I have done with RTI application with five states where general assembly election has happened. I am also doing interviews with people from all these states like Rajasthan,MP, Mizoram ,Chhatisgrah and Delhi. If any body interested to add to my findings please feel free to share your experience of voting. That will help us to make the arguments strong. My experience with my brother who has disability at polling both: * police were relatively sensitive * There was no awareness among officer and volunteers presented at polling both * I did not see the braille signage on EVMs machine * I feel that goverment is failed to provide the basic provisions mentioned in the supreme court order which itself is outdated and insufficient to ensure the barrier free voting. DO Share and voice out for a change! Re: [AI] Where is my right to vote?
Hey! Sonu... the very same has happened with me! Guess what, recently I've turned to 18 and with full joy i went to the polling booth at Shahpura in bhopal-M.P But my vote was given by somebody else from the Polling booth members themself! Even I knew how to give my sign but they simply took my finger prints! I've raised the issue through the very famous news paper dainik Bhaskar but no result has come out. But i'm not that person who sits quietly. now I'm planning to go for RTI. I'll write an application to the name of Election comissioner. I'll ask them to return my vote as soon as possible otherwise I'll again raise this same issue to whole india through news media. Dear Friends, We are all aware that politics plays major role in our country to highlight or solve the issues of vulnerable communities, but in my knowledge, I did not hear from any political party those who are talking about the issues of people with disabilities because they don't feel that disability community should be vote bank for them, perhaps they don't know about our strength in the society. I feel that this is another reason of our exclusion because till now disability is not an issue for GOVT. But my concern is that is there any political party who wants inclusion of people with disabilities to empower them to understand the importance of their one vote? Yesterday, I went to the poling booth to use my voting right to my favorite leader, but when I reached and asked them to give me escort but they said that we don't know about escort, however I managed and gave my slip to officer and reached to voting machine, but there was no Braille sticker so I faced difficulty to identify the button but I asked my relative and gave my vote, after voting, I asked concern person that you are not following instructions of supreme court then he said thatnobody gave us any kind of instruction. After this incident, I called media and highlighted this issues, and I will definetly file complaint to state election commission because they did not follow the supreme court order in 10 districts of Madhya Pradesh. Friends, It is a very serious issue if I will not come out from my house to use my vote then nobody will talk about your issues, therefore disability community is facing this problem.
