Dear friend's good morning to all of you:

Just now I cost my vote. Due to non availability of Braille stickers on E V Ms
I used escort services to cost my vote. In 2009 general elections Braille
stickers were pasted on E V Ms and supplied list of candidates in Braille.

2014-04-11 Thread Sweety bhalla
As I entered in the polling booth with my family, nobody asked for any help.
I asked for the information in Braille, the Ballot paper was immediately
provided to me and told my brother to fill a form for the persons with
disabilities who ever is going to assist them. He signed the form and then
we proceeded. The staff was well trained. They offered me a chair to sit and
said me to take your own time to read the Ballot paper. The experience was
very good. The staff was nice in behaviour.

Infact a friend of mine who was on election duty told me that if there was
any kind of complaint received from any of the booths, the entire team at
the polling booth would be suspended.

As I entered in the polling booth with my family, nobody asked for any
help.
I asked for the information in Braille, the Ballot paper was immediately
provided to me and told my brother to fill a form for the persons with
disabilities who ever is going to assist them. He signed the form and then
we proceeded. The staff was well trained. They offered me a chair to sit
and said me to take your own time to read the Ballot paper. The experience
was very good. The staff was nice in behaviour.

Re: [AI] Voting experiences

2014-04-10 Thread Prashant Verma
Dear all,
I am in the South Delhi Parliamentary constituency.
I had registered myself and Veena on the Election Commission website and had
requested for services for a visually impaired.
Today when we went to the polling booth which was about 400 meters from my
house, at the entrance I asked them for the help desk or any polling booth
officer.
The security people immediately sent a staff with a wheel chair. We told
them that we could walk and just needed assistance in reaching the correct
place. The staff guided us directly to the polling booth where I showed the
registration paper and the voting slip which I had received at my residence
address. It seemed that all the officials there were aware of what needed to
be done. Ballot paper in braille was also provided.
They also made sure that no one was watching when we were pressing the
button on the EVM. The EVM machine did not have braille marks but its
buttons could be easily identified.
We voted without any hassel and came out very quickly.

Our experience was very pleasant. I also experienced that although the path
from the gate to the EVM machine was not exactly smooth but a ramp was
present where required.

Hoping to read the experiences of others.

Re: [AI] Voting experiences

2014-04-10 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
I am a voter in Nagpur lok Sabha constituency..

When I entered the polling booth with my escort, the presiding officer
immediately jumped to accost us and candidly asked my escort whether the person
is andhaa, blind.
When he replied in the affirmative, he was immediately asked, whether he, i.e.
the escort would cast my vote.

Though I sensed that the assertions proceeded out of linguistic ignorance
rather than any manifest intent to dishonor democracy or disability, I took
charge of situation and reprimanded presiding officer for his ignorance and
presumptuousness.

He immediately saw the sense, and from then on the process proceeded smoothly.

Though EVM machine had labels in Braille, they were far from perfect.
They had no idea of a Braille ballot.
Instead, the asked me to take assistance of escort in reading out the
candidates and serial numbers.
I made them understand the absurdity of the idea, which they acknowledged.
I voted and did register the complaint in writing about lack of Braille ballot
paper with candidate names, parties and serial numbers which of course was
displayed prominently in print at the entrance..

Due to lack of time, I did not call media, nor pursue the matter further than
filing the complaint...

However, a friend of mine from Amravati tells me she had the smooth experience,
with EVM labeled, and braille ballot being provided when she demanded it.
They were not aware that it is a ballot in braille, but a mere paper it was to
them, upon which she told them what it was, and also that it should be given
to any blind voter visiting, unasked...
