[Bug 12699] opensuse 11.1 rtm (2.6.27.7-9-pae) kernel makes usb input devices unusable with acpi activated on m3a78-t asus board

--- Comment #3 from abitt...@stud.fh-heilbronn.de 2009-02-17 01:55 ---
hello.

i have updated the opensuse/novell bugzilla entry there.

to make it short: this bug doesnt appear on this very same hardware any more,
although i am dead sure that i havent changed a bit on my hardware setup
(testsystem) and i have tried to reproduce the usb bugs with all kinds of
various usb keyboard/mouse combinations and reinstalling opensuse 11.0 and 11.1
all over a great many times and variations.

i have still created the acpidump messages and lots of more logfiles, maybe
somebody could compare these new logs to my early logs any see if there are any
differences in behaviour.

basically this testsystem was just sitting turned off under the desk for a week
or two, and now i dont see these usb problems any more. system boots up fine
even without any additional acpi= parameters at all.

thanks and regards.

Ok, with 2.6.29-rc5 (at least) using the old config from 2.6.28 enables all the
necessary bits'n'pieces, notably framebuffer support.

So I am closing this bug report. Thanks

Add 500us delay only for MSI machines.

Please check if this patch works too. It is same 500us delay, but limited to
only MSI machines, so if it still works for you there is no need to wait for 2

(ref. comment no. 3)
(and if bugzilla doesn't turn that into a link, it's buggy :-) )

1. Yes.

2. That was a different problem. The oopses in *this* report were caused by
interaction between pciehp and eeepc-laptop due to pciehp_force=1; setting that
to 0 (or removing pciehp) fixes things. (I don't have the ACPI hotplug driver
built, but from what I've read I don't think that that would make any
difference anyway.)

3. Yes, still seeing that in -rc5. Details at
http://marc.info/?l=linux-kernelm=123429556717946w=2; BIOS 1808.

I might be wrong but first you declare:

+static int EC_FLAGS_MSI; /* Out-of-spec MSI controller */

and then you say:

+ if (EC_FLAGS_ASUS_MSI)

and IMHO they just don't match (missing 'ASUS' in declaration)
but I might be wrong

2.6.29-rc5 activates config_fb automatically, so that should be fixed.

[Bug 9147] atkbd.c: Unknown key released when 'ac' and/or 'battery' and/or 'thermal' modules are loaded

2009-02-17 Thread bugme-daemon
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9147

--- Comment #149 from da...@start.no 2009-02-17 12:56 ---
Ah, thanks. It seems to be thermal that's the main culprit for me, as the bug
starts appearing when the computer heats up and the fan starts spinning faster.

I noticed something interesting today, though: Since (if I remember correctly)
killing X resets the keyboard somehow, I tried switching to the console using
Ctrl-Alt-F1 and Ctrl-Alt-F2 etc., but Ctrl-Alt-F1 seems to be where X has
placed itself (usually Ctrl-Alt-F7 I believe?), because it just brought me back
to X. Ctrl-Alt-F2 brought up a launcher.

Be that as it may, one of those combinations, and presumably the first one,
released the control key again. If hopping out of X and back in again or some
such thing will consistently clear up the bug, then that will really go a long
way towards making the system usable.

[Bug 12731] New: laptop can't resume after suspend to memory

2009-02-17 Thread bugme-daemon
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12731

Summary: laptop can't resume after suspend to memory
   Product: ACPI
   Version: 2.5
 KernelVersion: 2.6.26 - 2.6.29
  Platform: All
OS/Version: Linux
  Tree: Mainline
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: P1
 Component: Power-Sleep-Wake
AssignedTo: acpi_power-sleep-w...@kernel-bugs.osdl.org
ReportedBy: gmai...@gmail.com

Latest working kernel version: ???
Earliest failing kernel version: 2.6.26 (didn't test with earlier versions)
reproduced in all major releases (up to 2.6.29-rc5)
Distribution: Debian/unstable + vanilla kernel
Hardware Environment: LG ED500 laptop
Problem Description: After suspend to memory, laptop is unable to resume.

Steps to reproduce:
there are 2 ways to reproduce:
1. as root:
# echo mem /sys/power/state
wait few seconds while laptop enters sleep mode
press any key to wake it up

2. boot kernel with test_suspend=mem commandline parameter
kernel will suspend during boot
press any key, or just wait for timer event that will wake up the computer

Actual result:
in both cases screen remains blank (off), power and HDD leds light for about
two seconds, then computer just turns off completely.

Notes:
1. suspend/resume works fine with Windows XP
2. enabling resume tacing (echo 1/sys/power/pm_trace) has no effect (no magic
number found in dmesg output on next boot after resume failure)

Reply from foxconn support to request for BIOS upgrade.

The 975X7AB-8ERKS does not need a BIOS fix to adjust for linux kernal bug.

My BIOS version is dated Jan 2008. In Aug 2008 in response to a beating
foxconn took on the ubuntu forum about a similar problem on another motherboard
they created a test BIOS to fix. Might have been applicable if I could get it.

Hi, George
Will you please do the following test on the latest kernel?
a. add the boot option of acpi_sleep=s3_beep
b. kill the process which is using /proc/acpi/event
c. echo mem /sys/power/state; dmesg dmesg_after; sync; reboot;
d. press the power button and see whether beep voice can be heard

If there is no beep and the box can't be resumed, please reboot the box and
see whether there exists the file of dmesg_after.

Will you please also attach the output of acpidump, lspci -vxxx?(Not the
output of acpidump -b)

It will be great if you can add the boot option of
acpi_sleep=old_ordering and repeat the step b/c/d.
Thanks.

still good in Mandriva 2009.0 kde 4.1

Steps to reproduce:login to kde 4.2 (or kde 3.5?)
sorry but I'm confused, you mean this only exists in kde 4.2 and 3.5, right?
is the problem related with the kernel version?
i.e. if kde 4.0 + 2.6.26.x works for you, can you verify if the problem can be
reproduced with kde 4.2 + the same kernel?

IMO, this is a KDE problem rather than a kernel bug.

[Bug 12723] system freeze with certain desktops

2009-02-17 Thread bugme-daemon
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12723

--- Comment #8 from dmwilli...@shaw.ca 2009-02-17 20:51 ---
See original report.
At this moment - kde 4.2 freezes. gnome 2.5.90 shows an acpi problem.
In the past - kde 3.5 and gnome (x) both showed system freeze. Only icewm
worked at that time.

Problem did not exist before Mandriva 2008 came out, kernel 2.6.26, kde 3.5.
As I see it, an acpi feature implemented in linux a year and a bit ago but not
called in kde 4.0 and 4.1 is reacting badly on this motherboard.

kernel 2.6.28.4 is where I first saw the recurrence of this problem - i.e. the
problem is reproduced this kernel. The problem has occurred before that with
many kernel versions starting with 2.6.26.(0?)

If it is a kde problem, then it is also a gnome problem I think.

Can you think of any tests I could run?

please echo core /sys/power/pm_test, and run echo mem /sys/power/state,
wait for about 10 seconds, does the system come back?

do this test for several times in a row, can the system come back?

if yes, run this test after the first suspend/resume, can the system come back?

[Bug 12011] battery status info dissapears in 2.6.27.5 - MSI GX700, EX600 laptops

08:23:37 pa...@baboon:~$ dmesg | grep MSI
ACPI: EC: Enabling special treatment for EC from MSI.

but again: battery is ok, acpi -V shows ok
but some power managers have problems to see if AC is on or off line

08:25:31 pa...@baboon:~$ acpi -V
 Battery 0: Discharging, 93%, 00:52:45 remaining
Battery 0: design capacity 4400 mAh, last full capacity 2509 mAh = 57%
  AC Adapter 0: off-line
 Thermal 0: ok, 53.0 degrees C
 Cooling 0: Processor 0 of 3
 Cooling 1: Processor 0 of 3
 Cooling 2: LCD 3 of 6

this might be related to something else (KDE power manager) but, with patch
udelay(500) patch it is ok, while with both: mslepp and your last patch Add
500us delay only for MSI machines (v2.6.28) it shows this AC problems

so, what then ? of course having properly working ACPI is one thing, but why
some user space behaves differently ?

more, KDE power manager gets the status of AC (on/off-line) from the boot time
- not from the start of KDE itself - and it does not change during the time
anymore - even if AC connected/disconnected

I know it might be not related but ...

Add 500us delay only for MSI machines (v2.6.28)

It is my fault again, sorry...
ACPI_EC_DELAY is already 500, do not multiply it by 5...
