[Bug 6679] early boot hang with USB MO disk present, unless acpi=off

   |magneto-optical drive,  |disk present, unless
   |unless acpi off |acpi=off

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED]  2006-08-10 00:15 ---
It seems that when this drive is present upon BIOS initialization,
the BIOS does something evil that kills an ACPI-enabled Linux
so early that it will be very difficult to figure out why.

Indeed, it must be in the table parsing code, because
you found that "acpi=ht" still hangs, and the only part
of ACPI that "acpi=ht" runs is the table parsing code.

Are there any BIOS options, perhaps related to boot order
or USB that have an effect on this failure?

Please attach the output from dmesg -s64000 and paste
the output from /proc/interrutps for a successful
ACPI-enabled boot with the drive later added.

Please do the same for the drive-present acpi=off boot.

USB drivers are not loaded, Wifi driver is not loaded, DRM driver is not loaded,
sound driver is not loaded, ethernet driver is not loaded.

well, it should be able to run STR from battery about 4-5 days.

This looks like an error that is provoked by the sensors driver.

Probably /proc/acpi will show the acpi line increasing at a high rate
due to an SCI that is provoked by a GPE, and ACPI tries over and
over to turn off the GPE and fails.

If this is the case, I suppose we could add a featre to Linux/ACPI
where it tries to recognize that it is unable to squelch a GPE,
but it isn't clear how to tell the difference between that and
a valid source of a lot of GPEs...

I think in this case, you have to decide to run the sensor driver,
or to run ACPI, but not run both.

When starting the SMP Kernel with acpi=off, system hangs/freeze at a
indeterminable state of the boot process.

The asus-acpi module is not working for the board, so I had to remove it to
avoid error messages in syslog "Asus ACPI: Error reading LCD status" .

The module is r8169 is loaded.

If soembody chooses to implement the Windows Management Interface
on Linux and there is an ACPI bug that prevents it, then this
is the place to file it.

But lack of WMI support on Linux is not an Linux ACPI bug.

The problem is not the missing video upon resume, but a hard crash (the
machine does not respond to input anymore, neither keyboard nor ethernet). The
original report describes the issues in detail.
Regarding your second question, I cannot test that as I sold the machine.
Maybe Richard Stellingwerff could test this again?

Indeed! 2.6.18-rc4 (commit 9f737633e6ee54fc174282d49b2559bd2208391d) works fine
for me. It should be noted that I got the following during boot, though:

Lukewarm IQ detected in hotplug locking

Overall, though, it suspends and resumes just fine. Is there any specific fix I
can point to to get this backported to my distribution's 2.6.17 kernel?

[Bug 6974] turns off after sleep-2.6.15 - thinpad r51e

http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6974

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED]  2006-08-10 03:26 ---
i'm talking about suspend to RAM and suspend to disk,
none of them works on my laptop.

when i entered "hibernate" in the terminal or when i chose "suspend" from the
ubuntu
dapper on/off-menu i've got a black screen, the half-moon (suspend-LED) was
blinking for
a while, and afterwards this LED dyed and only the power-LED was on.
The combination Fn-F4 (hotkey for suspend on/off on ibm laptops) didn't show any
reaction, so i had to hold the power-button for some seconds. the computer
didn't wake
up, it booted as if it was turned off before.

i tried kernel 2.6.15, the ubuntu-kernel 2.6.15-26-386/686 of course, but there
was no
difference in putting the computer to sleep.
i tried to compile a 2.6.18 and 2.6.17 kernel for some hours, but in my .config
was
something wrong, so it came always to kernel panics.
i tried kernel 2.6.14.3 too, because of a german guy, who got a similar
thinkpad like me
(http://www.kaltertee.de/index.php?current=linux),

but the new kernel compiled with his .config
(http://www.kaltertee.de/files/.config)

didn't worked on my computer. i had problems when X was booting up. i saw the
mouse-pointer twice only for a second, and then X crashed down.

[Bug 6974] turns off after sleep-2.6.15 - thinpad r51e

2006-08-10 Thread bugme-daemon
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6974

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED]  2006-08-10 03:38 ---
maybe it's a video resume issue, i'm not sure. anyway, i took a look at
Documentation/power/video.txt.
so, i've made a little step further:
i changed something: i found a hint of a guy on the ubuntuforums, who has the
same
thinkpad like me(http://www.ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-140178.html):

 i added the following kernel options to grub:
noapic nolapic acpi_sleep=s3_bios pci=usepirqmask pci=noacpi pnpacpi=off

but when i entered hibernate in the video and in the plain text mode it wasn't
possible
to resume.

so i decided to try only acpi_sleep=s3_bios in the text mode. it really worked
for the
first time ever. i could come back to the console, but "startx" returned with a
error.
it had problems loading some x-fonts.
only the command "X" succeeded and showed me the mouse-pointer and i could also
move the
pointer.

but in the vga-mode i had no luck.

>>after sleep, it turns completely off

[Bug 5809] Status/state for LID is _close_ while the lid is open

2006-08-10 Thread bugme-daemon
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5809

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED]  2006-08-10 03:54 ---
Hi,

thanks for your answer. I'll try to answer your questions...

1. When you boot the system with the lid open, what does state say?
***
# cat /proc/acpi/button/lid/LID0/state
state:  closed

2. When you then press the lid button down (or actually close the lid
and check the state from a serial console or network connection)
what does state say?
***
The state is still closed when the LID is closed.

# sleep 5 && cat /proc/acpi/button/lid/LID0/state
state:  closed

3. when you release or open the lid, what does state say?
***
When I wait up to 20 seconds with a closed LID and open it afterwards, the
status changed to open, after opening the lid.

# cat /proc/acpi/button/lid/LID0/state
state:  open

does it work properly from there forward?
*
Not really. The state remains up to 10 seconds in state "open" and changed then
to "closed" (lid is closed). But no suspend activity happens after the change to
"close". But when I open the lid the system powers down for suspending. So it
looks like that the system did not see the status change until I've opened the
lid. Why does the status changed so late after I've closed the lid?

# sleep 5 && cat /proc/acpi/button/lid/LID0/state && sleep 5 && cat
/proc/acpi/button/lid/LID0/state && sleep 5 && cat
/proc/acpi/button/lid/LID0/state && sleep 5 && cat
/proc/acpi/button/lid/LID0/state && sleep 5 && cat
/proc/acpi/button/lid/LID0/state && sleep 5 && cat
/proc/acpi/button/lid/LID0/state
state:  open
state:  open
state:  closed
state:  closed
state:  closed
state:  closed

If you need further information please contact me.

Regards,
Michael

Applying 55b2355eefc2f160246226d4d69fed431173a4d5 on top of 2.6.17 makes resume
work for me -- not every time (it sometimes hangs during suspend, probably due
to other bugs in the kernel), but much much better than it was in 2.6.17. Should
this be closed, or could the fix go into 2.6.17.x?

When issuing "cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state" in a loop, every once in a
while i get an error, with each time in dmesg:

ACPI Error (psargs-0355): [STAT] Namespace lookup failure, AE_NOT_FOUND

and sometimes also:

ACPI Exception (acpi_battery-0206): AE_AML_OPERAND_TYPE, Evaluating _BST
[20060707]

I didn't succeed in reproducing the oops, but when running the loop long
enough I get hundreds of thousands of lines in the kernel log saying

ACPI Warning (utdelete-0397): Large Reference Count (801) in object dfe7eaec
[20060707]

with the count running up. This more or less completely uses up my processing
power.

The exact command I issued was:
"for i in `seq 1 1`; do cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state; dmesg |
tail -10; sleep 0.3; done"

Maybe 0.3 seconds sleep is too fast?

As far as I know, it didn't always happen, or at least not as frequently. It
must have started sometime with an ubuntu update installing a newer kernel.
I'll try with older versions and report.

Thanks,

Johan

The two power LEDs (one on keyboard, one on front) blink upon suspend, and the
fan, hd, etc. all spin down.

On resume, the machine does power on again -- power LED goes on constent, media
keys on the keyboard light up, disk and fan spin up, and there will be CD access
if I eject and insert a disc. This unresponsive resume will happen from lid,
power/media key(s), keyboard, etc. Note that *any* keyboard key will work, not
just Fn.

maxcpus=1 (or disabling SMP in the kernel) is no help, and noapic/nomce/pci=bios
does nothing.

The problem persists regardless of native/legacy SATA mode (ahci/ata_piix).
However, I'm not sure it's a SATA problem at all, as I've tried a kernel with
*no* support for SATA/IDE at all, using a USB pen drive as root (I have the same
problem upon resume -- dead).

3) Kernel prior 2.6.17-rc5 can't resume on WOL with forcedeth.

Comment: It took me more than 3 month of investigation to get this thing
working, unbelievable!!

Thanks to all, who helped me.

Regards,

Andreas

[Bug 6984] New: Buggy BIOS on MSI S271 / MS-1058 notebook

2006-08-10 Thread bugme-daemon
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6984

   Summary: Buggy BIOS on MSI S271 / MS-1058 notebook
Kernel Version: 2.6.15-26-amd64-k8
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
 Owner: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 Submitter: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Most recent kernel where this bug did not occur: None
Distribution: Ubuntu Dapper
Hardware Environment: MSI S271 laptop
Software Environment: Ubuntu Linux 2.6.15-26-amd64-k8
Problem Description:
Booting with ACPI turned on in the kernel fails immediately. The machine does
boot with ACPI turned off. Also a combination of noapic and nohpet seems to have
some effect.

I have dumped the DSDT file from the BIOS, but re-assembly fails miserably with
122 errors. I'll attach the dsdt file and iasl errors.

OK. Booting is done with this basic configuration:
Kernel 2.6.16.21-0.13-smp (SuSE 10.1 Linux) with kernel options "resume=/dev/md2
 splash=silent showopts" and MO-drive connected and on.

Mainboard-BIOS has 3 entries for ACPI:

ACPI 2.0 support ->  Yes/No
ACPI APIC support->  Enabled/Disabled
BIOS -> AML ACPI table   ->  Enabled/Disabled

3 entries, each has 2 selections => 8 combinations. Every combination gave a
freeze. After that every entry was set back to Yes/Enabled.

USB has 5 entries in mainboard-BIOS and these are the settings that gave a
freeze:

USB Function -> Disabled/2/4/6/8 USB Ports(set: 8 USB Ports)
Legacy USB Support -> Auto/Enabled/Disabled (set: Auto)
USB 2.0 Controller   -> Enabled/Disabled  (set: Enabled)
USB 2.0 Controller Mode -> FullSpeed/HighSpeed (set: HighSpeed)
USB Mass Storage Device Configuration:
 Emulation Type -> Auto/Floppy/Forced FDD/Hard Disk/CDROM (set: Auto)

I took the settings above as default and changed one entry only for each test:

Test 1: USB Function set to "Disabled" -> boot ok
Test 2: Legacy USB Support set to "Disabled" -> boot ok
Test 3: USB 2.0 Controller set to "Disabled" -> boot ok
Test 4: USB 2.0 Controller Mode set to "FullSpeed" -> boot ok
Test 5: Emulation Type set to "Hard Disk" -> freeze
Test 6: Emulation Type set to "Floppy"-> freeze

Note: Disabling "USB Function" removes the other 4 entries from the BIOS menu.
Disabling "USB 2.0 Controller" removes "USB 2.0 Controller Mode".

It looks strange to me that HighSpeed (480 Mbps) freezes, but FullSpeed (12Mbps)
is ok (???).

The requested 4 files are attached (dmesg + /proc/interrupts for acpi on/off).

There is invalid ASL code in the dsdt.dsl:

Device (RS48)
{
Name (_ADR, 0x00)
OperationRegion (NB2, PCI_Config, 0x00, 0x0100)
Field (NB2, AnyAcc, NoLock, Preserve)
{
Offset (0x90),
UMBS,   32,
Offset (0x9B),
UMSL,   8,
Offset (0xE4),
MCDA,   32,
NCIN,   32
}

If (UMRS)
{

Can't have an "If" statement under a device. I'm not sure this was even
allowed in ACPI 1.0. If you comment out this if block, the code compiles,
although there are a few warnings like this:

dsdt.dsl  4112: Acquire (MUTE, 0x03E8)
Warning 1103 - ^ Possible operator timeout is
ignored

Which means that if the Acquire times out, the code blindly goes forward as if
it didn't.
