I am looking for specific

there have any web links or book references that state
this?

Thanks.

I don't think that it could be any of the servers as all have good network
connectivity, heaps of RAM and processors... This is strange and we
certainly never had the problem with NT

Hey all,

I know this isn't particularly related but wondered if anyone else has
encountered this little problem:

Whenever anyone on the network goes to open/save a document from standard
app's such as Office it can take up to 2 minutes to drop down the drives
list.

Any Ideas?

RE: [ActiveDir] Upgrade BDC

2001-11-14 Thread Joe Sargent

It will not allow me to connect to the old domain as a member server because
the old domain has an NT 4 PDC. So I am stuck with this server that will
not allow me to do anything but run the AD wizard that will not allow me to
add it as a member server or as a domain controller.

My guess is the only options I have is to upgrade the other PDC to w2k and
then add this old PDC and demote to a member with DCpromo, or blow it away
and install W2K from scratch. Too bad I forgot to break the mirror before
the upgrade. If I had done that then this would have been easy to fix.

I think I will choose blow it away.

Thanks for you help.

Sorry guys, I have looked into everything that had been suggested...

We only use IP
All machines are of at least P500, 128 spec
All Servers are up to speed with plenty of RAM and processor power, and all
have gigabit or FDDI links

It may also be useful to know that Explorer also regularly hangs on
machines when opening Explorer. I know this problem can be due to dodgy or
non-existent network connections but this is not the case here.

Do you have any other protocol's loaded on the problem client machines?
Such
as IPX or worse ?!

Depending on the binding order (for the protocols) the client will try and
emunerate all connections using the first protocol. If IPX is top of the
binding order this will have to timeout before trying NetBios / IP etc to
the connected servers.

You can check the bindings but right clicking My Network Places /
Properties
/ Select the LAN adapter / Advanced / Advanced Settings

Hope this helps...

Hey all,

I know this isn't particularly related but wondered if anyone else has
encountered this little problem:

Whenever anyone on the network goes to open/save a document from
standard
app's such as Office it can take up to 2 minutes to drop down the drives
list.

Any Ideas?

Thanks in advance

Robert Rutherford

RE: [ActiveDir] a small problem.

2001-11-14 Thread Chris McEvoy

Firstly check all the network settings (such as DNS etc.) if they are
correct you could try this which worked for me when I had a similar
problem:

1. Disjoin computer from domain (i.e. put it in workgroup)
2. Delete the computer account from the AD
3. Add the computer back into the domain.

You will then need to copy over the documents and settings from the old
account.

Re: [ActiveDir] a small problem.

2001-11-14 Thread Neil Smith

Do you have any other protocol's loaded on the problem client machines? Such
as IPX or worse ?!

Depending on the binding order (for the protocols) the client will try and
emunerate all connections using the first protocol. If IPX is top of the
binding order this will have to timeout before trying NetBios / IP etc to
the connected servers.

You can check the bindings but right clicking My Network Places / Properties
/ Select the LAN adapter / Advanced / Advanced Settings

Hope this helps...

[ActiveDir] Upgrade BDC

2001-11-14 Thread Joe Sargent

I have an NT 4.0 BDC that I want to upgrade to Windows 2000 and have as a
member server in another W2K AD domain. I took the server off line and
upgraded to W2K.

I am now presented with the option to join as a member server or a domain
controller. When I answer the questions it then tries to communicate with
the NT 4.0 PDC and then errors out.

Is there not a way to upgrade an old NT4 BDC and bring it back on-line to
join another domain as a member server?

Thanks,
Joe Sargent

AW: [ActiveDir] a small problem.

2001-11-14 Thread Mike Tonazzi

In my experience a pc that shows this behaviour has a mapping to a network
drive that doesn't exist anymore.
Sometimes a defect CD-Rom shows similar behaviour.

The box tries to access it but without success. After a while it gives it up
and then shows the available
network drives.
