Re: Migration process using more than 1 tape drive eventhough mig proc =1

2000-11-05 Thread Shalev, Jonathan

When the disk pool is full, a session can/will write directly to a tape in
the "Next Storage Pool" for the disk pool.
Run "q session f=d" and you will see which session is using the tape.

Migration process using more than 1 tape drive eventhough migproc =1

2000-11-05 Thread Pietro Brenni

This problem is very particular

I have occurances where a diskpool becomes full , or exceeds the Hi
threshold and a migration process starts. Issuing a tape mount.
About 3 mins later in the activity log another tape is mounted for the same
tapepool.
q proc shows only 1 tape mounted for the migration process
q mount shows 2 tapes mounted and INUSE
q vol f=d shows tapes are being updated
changing one of the tapes to read-only sets its status to IDLE ( in q mount
), produces an error for a session from a node ???(Why as all backups go
directly to disk)
changing the tape back to readw , migration process continues to use the
tape.
I tried this again, this time mounted a new scratch tape , but still this
is not showing in q proc for the migration process

The storage pool has these settings

   Storage Pool Name: SP_DISK_POOL
   Storage Pool Type: Primary
   Device Class Name: DISK
 Estimated Capacity (MB): 4,000.0
Pct Util: 100.0
Pct Migr: 100.0
 Pct Logical: 100.0
High Mig Pct: 90
 Low Mig Pct: 85
 Migration Delay: 0
  Migration Continue: Yes
 Migration Processes: 1
   Next Storage Pool: SP_TAPE_POOL
Reclaim Storage Pool:
  Maximum Size Threshold: No Limit
  Access: Read/Write
Description: SP Disk Pool for Filesystem Backups
   Overflow Location:
   Cache Migrated Files?: No
  Collocate?:
   Reclamation Threshold:
 Maximum Scratch Volumes Allowed:
   Delay Period for Volume Reuse:
  Migration in Progress?: Yes
Amount Migrated (MB): 437.13
Elapsed Migration Time (seconds): 453
Reclamation in Progress?:
 Volume Being Migrated/Reclaimed:
  Last Update by (administrator): ADMIN
   Last Update Date/Time: 06-11-2000 13:13:38

Also dev mount retention set to 1 min

Now this is a problem as I'm using 3570 and only have 19 slots. The above
problem causes 2 tapes to be partially filled wasting 1 valuble slot
TSM = 3.7.3.8
TSM client= 3.7.2.15

Is there somthing about the migration process that isn't documented or is
it a bug

Can ADSM backup Traditional-Chinese Windows NT 4.0 server?

2000-11-05 Thread Terence Chung

Hi all,

Now, I am testing to backup a Traditional-Chinese Windows NT 4.0 server by
ADSM. The ADSM client hangs when it backup some files with Chinese
filenames. My configuration is as follows:

Client:
Traditional -Chinese Windows NT 4.0 server with SP5
ADSM NT English client 3.1.0.8

Server:
RS/6000 run on AIX 4.3.3
ADSM server 3.1.2.50

Is there any Chinese version of Windows NT adsm client? Or how to
customize a English ADSM client version to backup a Chinese NT server?
e.g. Any options parameters I need to set in dsm.opt file.

Thanks for your attention

Re: TSM 3.73. include/exclude statements: where should they be?

2000-11-05 Thread Joel Fuhrman

I have this statement in the server name stanza in the file dsm.sys
   Inclexcl /var/tsm/backup.exclude
Naturally the directory and file name can be anything you like. This
applies to Unix. NT/Windows does not use the include/exclude file.

One other comment. If you modify the contents of the inclexcl file, you
must restart the scheduler service because it only reads this file on
startup.

Besides the includes/excludes that can be defined on the client, you can
also define cloptset's on the server for use with the client. That is
Client Option Set. These are neat for those options that you might want
to only keep one copy for a group of clients.

Never mind - I figured it out - I just put quotes around it and it works

Exclude List

2000-11-05 Thread Barth, Terry (MBS)

Hello All - I was wondering in the NT environment, how you write up an
exclude list for folders that contain a space.

We could easily rename these folders, however, it would involve also
changing names within various programs. Some, of course, are for Windows,
therefore, those names cannot be changed.

Therefore, how do I write up a folder name that contains spaces in the
exclusion list - ?

Thanks

Which "manuals" are you looking at?
Chapter 7 of the ADSM 3.1 Unix Backup-Archive Clients manual, under
Creating an Include-Exclude Options File says:

You can specify the include and exclude options in the client system
options file. You can also create an include-exclude options file to
exclude specific files from backup services, and to assign specific
management classes to files.

Under the specific Include and Exclude options description:

Place this option in the Include-Exclude options file or the client system
options file (dsm.sys).

Re: retention

2000-11-05 Thread Barth, Terry (MBS)

Hi Serge -

I have version 3.7.2 at my server, soon to upgrade to 4.11 - Anyway, I
thought that when an archive was created, it has to go out to the client,
thus, it would put some burden on the client and network, or am I missing
something? I want to implement archiving, but this is one of the problems
that I am facing. I know backupsets are generated at the server end, but I
am not pleased as to the way it needs to be done. For instance, it is not
real easy to retrieve them. If I am only doing a filespace that is say 5
gigs, then it uses a whole tape and I cannot use the tape anymore. These
are just to mention a few.

Therefore, I have been looking at archiving - but I have been looking at 2
things - 1, the size of my database will probably grow at a super fast rate
as we need to keep archives on a monthly basis for 7 years and 2, the
network traffic. If I am looking at something wrong, someone please tell
me. Thanks

RECLAIM does not address the issue. It only prevents the TSM server from
moving the active copies around to help reduce the number of tapes the pool
uses following an inventory expiration process (and is an option of the
storage pool configuration should you want to change it More info: Do
an "help update stg" on your admin interface).

What you want to do, the way you stated it, is set the REUSEDELAY=360 (also
a parameter of the storage pool configuration). However, I don't think
that is what you REALLY want to do. You should establish an ARCHIVE policy
for your environment, and start using the archival process instead. At TSM
3.7+, the archives are generated and handled at the TSM server. Both the
client and network don't get additionally burdened by this process.

Food for thought: The REUSEDELAY=360 will get you to spend $ in tapes
since you will not going to be able to recall ANY tapes freed up by
reclamation for at least a year for this pool...

The quickest way that comes to my mind is to keep the RECLAIM percent at
100
for copypoolextra.
But, why do it anyway?
