DB2 is IBM's database manager product. There are many names for it, but
basicaly it is the same product. It's name has been changed to Universal
Database Manager ( UDB ) from version 5, but still the same product :)
Oh well, it has been enhanced quite a bit :) For example working *SM
support was added :)
db2 for rs/6000 -> db2/6000, db2 for os2 -> db2/2 or db/2 or db2,
db2 for nt -> db/2 or db2, but now it's all gone. We have UDB and everybody
is happy :>>

> The redbook "Managing VLDB using DB2 UDB EEE" seems specific to AIX.
I was not refering to redbooks, but the udb/db2 for nt administration
guide, which comes with udb/db2. But redbooks are good. Even if they
seem to be platform specific, you need to apply the same pattern on each
platform. ie.

1. install db2

2. install adsm/tsm _api_ client ( version 3 or higher for udb )

3. set the enviroment variables to point to your *sm installation
( this is described in the udb admin guide )

4. configure dsm.opt ( for non unix platforms )
( this is described in *sm client manuals )

5. configure your database for *sm, see "db2 get db cfg for ", and
check/set your *sm variables.
( they are adsm_* in udb 6, but tsm_* in udb 7 IIRC )

6. make sure you understand db2adutl
( 5. and 6. can be found in the udb admin guide )

7. enjoy

Oh. And don't forget to set up the management class for your backups as it is
described in the redbooks... :)

Hope this helps.

Matt - There isn't a conceptual problem with "starting early" in that
the Backup Stgpool operation is incremental, and so doing it again
later will get what hasn't already been copied to the Copypool.
A consideration in general would be that related data might be spread
more widely in the Copypool and thus cause any recovery of specific
filespaces using that data to take a bit longer. But that's not much
of a real issue in that recovery would use multiple days' worth of
Copypool imagery anyway, which is quite spread out as it is.
In that you're talking about backing up a disk storage pool, you should
be able to do that in parallel with incoming data, without much contention.
The overriding issue is that your DB backup be done at such a time as
to make your system fully recoverable.

Re: when can make offsite copy?

2000-11-21 Thread Kelly J. Lipp

Yes, but your off-site tapes would not have all the data on them each day.
Some of the newly arriving data would not be going off-site.

Because of the way TSM works: backup all night to disk, daily process as
long as necessary during the day, the tape pick-up schedule should be
modified. Instead of having them show up at 9:00 have them arrive at 14:00.
Simple scheduling change.

Can't schedule backup of network shares

2000-11-21 Thread Paul Fielding

I'm trying to back up a couple of network mounted drives. In the past I've done this
by simply adding the drives to the domain list. This time, however, I'm having
problems getting them to run, and I suspect that since I am using the NT 4.1.1.0
client this time that it is either a) a change in the config I need to make, or b) a
bug in the code. In my dsm.opt file i have tried the domain statement each of these
two ways:

(N: and O: are the network shares)

DOMAIN "C:"
DOMAIN "D:"
DOMAIN "E:"
DOMAIN "N:"
DOMAIN "O:"

and

DOMAIN C: D: E: N: O:

In both cases, this is what I see in the dsmsched.log:

Executing scheduled command now.
11/21/2000 10:20:35 --- SCHEDULEREC OBJECT BEGIN TEST 11/21/2000 10:20:00

11/21/2000 10:20:39 Incremental backup of volume 'N:'
11/21/2000 10:20:39 Incremental backup of volume 'O:'

However, neither the N: nor the O: drive are touched.

Re: ADSM and DB2

2000-11-21 Thread Jim Kirkman

I'm checking out two redbooks I found mentioned in the archives and have some
rookie (DB2) confusion.

"Using ADSM to Back up Databases" refers to DB2/2 and DB2/6000. One is
obviously for the RS6000 platform, the other makes reference to Intel
platforms but refers to OS/2 commands. (I did find a matrix that references
NT and OS/2 for DB2/2 v2). Should I be looking elsewhere for UDB on NT? Or
should I be asking if Universal DB2 and DB2/2 are different beasts?

The redbook "Managing VLDB using DB2 UDB EEE" seems specific to AIX.

Thanks for any guidance.

This change will allow you to specify what ports are used by the web

Schedule Win98 3.7.2.17

Restore an archive with the description?

2000-11-21 Thread Robert Cross

Sorry if this is a "doh!" question

Is it possible to restore an entire named archive in a single command, i.e.
selecting on the contents of the "Description" field. This is easy in the GUI
client, but I'd like to be able to do this without needing an X display.

What I'm looking for is something like
 dsmc retrieve -subdir=yes -des="Archive 1104" "/*"
(this doesn't work)

I can restore the archive if I know the filesystems it contains and select
each individually, but I'd really like to be able to do it in a single

Re: Error msg deleting filespace

2000-11-21 Thread Loon, E.J. van - SPLXM

Hi Henke!
I have seen this error before, but I don't know what it means. It's some
kind of database inconsistency.
You can do a SHOW VOLUMEUSAGE to see the volumes used by this
node. Then issue a DELETE VOLUME DISCARDDATA=YES to delete the
volumes.
When this is done you will be able to delete the node from ADSM.
Warning!!! This can only be done when you use collocation=YES!!
Kindest regards,
Eric van Loon

Re: Client Acceptor and firewall

2000-11-21 Thread Rob Edwards

Petr,

Yes, 4.1.2 is the next scheduled PTF, and this is the PTF I was referring
to below.

This change will allow you to specify what ports are used by the web
client, so that
you can then open those ports in the firewall.

Hope this helps.

a current 3.1 level, such as 3.1.2.50 or one of the bumps
above that, from the fixtest area. If you're up for the licensing
and big delta, you may want to move into TSM levels.

It's not AIX, but rather the way Unix "path" specifications should be:

For security reasons, root (and most other system accounts) should NOT
have a "." entry in the Path, to prevent someone from planting a command
of the same name as one that is an established name, but in an oddball
directory, like /tmp. Imagine what would happen if root had cd'ed into
/tmp and had "." in its Path, and happened to invoke some imposter
command instead of the real command. That's a classic hacker ploy. Get
in the habit of doing ./CMDNAME form invocation to explicitly invoke
something in the current directory. And make sure none of your
non-ordinary accounts have a "." in their path.

Re: Offsite copypools and rellocaction

2000-11-21 Thread Lawrence Clark

I think there will be general agreement that copypools are not normally colocatted
since your restores come from your primary storage pool, and quicker restores are the
primary advantage of colocation.

>>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 11/20/00 11:24PM >>>
We are in the process of creating offsite copypools for DR purposes. We are
constrained with the number of tape drives and the available window for
running reclamation. I have read the item "Re: Offsite DR Cartridges" which
implies that cartridge usage could increase dramatically with collocation
turned on for these pools. We have 72 nodes registered to ADSM and the
copypools total approximately 2TB. What is the recommended approach for
offsite copypools?

When the Exchange agent is installed it replaces the old adsmv3.dll
(566KB )
with its adsmv3.dll ( 472KB ). With this dll in place dsmcutil
errors out.
If you place the old adsmv3.dll back in the system32 directory, the
dsmcutil
will work.

Bill,

Is DSMCUTIL failing with that error?
If I recall this might be an issue with a mix-match
in the installed TSM API version vs. the base client (DSMCUTIL)
version.
You may have to get a 3.1.0.8 version of the adsmv3.dll
and put it into the directory with DSMCUTIL.EXE.

>>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 11/20/00 04:29PM >>>
Wondering what this is:

Trying to learn something about AIX and I'm running into a wall, not
surprising though. I have a couple of problems in that:

1. If I run dsmcad from the command line, while in the directory where it
resides, it is there I can see it, I get the message:
/bin/ksh: dsmcad: not found.

The TSM 4.1 book "Installing the Clients" is where I got the info to start
the TSM Client Acceptor daemon.

2. When I try to run the baclient from the web client I get the following
error:
ANS2619S The Client Acceptor Daemon was unable to start the Remote Client
Agent. Now in the web client error log I see the following:

ANS1036S Invalid option 'D' found in options file
'/ust/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin' at line number : 1 Invalid entry 'D'

Explanations is as follows:
Explanation: The specified option in the TSM options file (file-name) is in
error.
System Action: Processing stopped.
User Response: Correct the options file entry.

But I don't see a 'd' or 'D' in my options file on line 1 so I guess I don't
get it. I checked both the dsm.sys and the dsm.opt.

What am I missing on both of these?

Running TSM 4.1.1 on AIX 4.3.3

I am not sure the environment is set correctly since I've built from scratch
and am just learning, so any help is appreciated.
