Recovery log utilisation and aggregate size

2001-06-27 Thread Eric Winters

Good People,

I'm interested in establishing to what extent TXNGROUPMAX and TXNBYTELIMIT
(ie aggregate control) options will affect recovery log usage. My objective
at this stage is to reduce the utilisation of the recovery log in a normal
mode environment. The log has been filling when pinned by the backup of
large files. If I back up a larger number of small aggregates from other
nodes at the same time, will they require less recovery log space than if
the same data was sent as fewer larger aggregates? Testing is a little
difficult in this environment so I'd like to hear your experiences.

Your comments gentlemen please.
Thanks.

tdpsql v2.2 gui opens then immediately closes

2001-06-27 Thread Joel Fuhrman

tpdsql version 2.2 was working but now the gui window opens and then
immediately closes.

The tdpsql.log file show the request QUERY SQL but there is no connection to
the TSM 4.1.3.0 Server running on AIX 4.3.3 ML06 and there is no entry in
the dsierror.log file. A command line tdpsqlc QUERY SQL gets the same
results. However, a tdpsqlc QUERY TSM * /all does list the backups.

Any suggestions as to what would cause this?

Re: Database backup performance

2001-06-27 Thread Paul Zarnowski

We back up 19,591,179 pages in 4 hours. This is an 83GB database, 91%
utilized. Server is an RS/6000 M80. Backup media is DLT 7000
tape. Translates to 5.3MB/s by my calculation. Our incremental backups
usually take 15-30 minutes.

Re: Oracle Agent NT backups

2001-06-27 Thread France, Don G (Pace)

Yes, it works pretty well, once you figure out the different levels to
support -- RMAN needs a separate repository db for each different release
level of the db's supported.

The bulk of your questions are answered in the TDP for Oracle install guide
(including a sample script for the TDP-Ora backup scheduler); you can
download the book from the Tivoli web site (the following link all on one
line):

Subject: Oracle Agent NT backups

I'm finally getting my DBA's to work on using the Oracle agent setup on NT.
I keep getting complaints from the guy and since I can't answer the
questions because I myself have never used it, sorry to be so ignorant about
this, I was wondering if someone could answer a few questions and help
enlighten me.

1. Are the backups kicked off by the TSM server through a .cmd file on the
client?

2. If 1 above is true then does anyone have a sample script I can look at?

3. Besides the few lines in the dsm.opt sample file supplied with the
software do I need to add anything else?

4. If rman is somehow scheduled from the client itself to kick off the
backups, what are the parameters that need to be set up?

5. Has anyone tried to use the Oracle Enterprise Management console from a
designated system to schedule "ALL" these backups no matter what client they
are on?

Thanks all for the help.

We had that once on a restore of an H70. We discovered that the parameters
for the restore of an incremental backup were too large with too many files
and we now only do archives in the event we have to do a restore like that
again.

I have never received this error message in the client dsmerror.log before.

Outside of the obvious message meaning, what could cause this?

I have looked at the Tivoli error message on-line HTML, and can not find it
there. I even looked in the TSM 4.1 messages. Its not there either.

This message came from the TSM backup client on the TSM server.

Environment:
H70 AIX server, running AIX 4.3.3;

Off the top of my head:
Can you create that file /adsm/drplans/DRPLAN.20010627.152129 maually?
Is there enough space in the filesystem? a typical DRplan is maybe 200K.
Can you define a different devclass with FILE devtype pointing to a
different directory and make THAT work?

i HAD THE SAME PROBLEM
Pl do vmstat and see that what it shows under avm & free
If free is 128 or low it shows that ur memory is low.
Now use crush cmd to release the mem for time being.
Else apply AIX PATCHES its memory leak problem on AIX 433
dont forget to apply TSM client patches also.
U can also see vmtune and schedtune cmds
to see what is -k flag .Pl increase this value so that
pages are freed up fast.
Process is not killed when low on mem.

I have an L32... The long ribbon cable that attaches to the picker is
getting stuck. It can wrap around the picker and get damaged. IBM came up
with a retrofit kit to fix this problem. The ribbon cable will get damaged
if you don't install the retrofit kit which retains and reroutes the ribbon
cable.

Re: lift blocked 3575l12 33h checkin

2001-06-27 Thread David Longo

Cal IBM service on this if you got the error more than once. I have a 3575-L32 and
have had this. On mine though it required a "special mod" from IBM's manufacturer due
to a new "phase 3" shaft. What was basically happening was the big ribbon cable
connecting to the robot assy was getting partially caught in some instances and
holding lift and damaging cable. We actually saw this happen on several occaisions.

Don't know if this would be happening the same on the L12 though. Examine the ribbon
cable for any nicks or damage.

There can be other reasons but it is most likely library and not *SM.

Oracle Agent NT backups

2001-06-27 Thread Gill, Geoffrey L.

With 4.11 client (and 3.106 from memory) you specify DIR to backup the NDS
database not NDS.

Our NetWare option files have the line:

I remember one situation using TSM and Backtrack with such errors after a
100% full of archlog filesystem, moving the archlog data to another fs, then
backup the remaining files, and copy back the moved files twice (some time
later). If Backtrack found the same archlog dataset the second time, it
crashes. We need a day to find out.

Re: TSM and backint success stories

2001-06-27 Thread Davidson, Becky

Make sure in upgrading backint to TDP that you go straight to 3.2. We went
to 3.1.4 and had alot of issues but 3.2 seems to be going well. We also ran
into CPU issues of a sort. With backint everything ran about 5 hours but
TDP seems to be more CPU intensive.

Has anyone had any success backing up SAP R3 online tablespaces to a TSM
server using backint versus Data Protection?
I haven't seen definitive answers as to whether backint will still work
(i.e.a supported configuration). I'd hate to think that TDP for SAP is the
only way to run online backups of an SAP ORACLE database.
We are going to upgrade (finally) from ADSM Server 3.1.20 to TSM 4.1, and
we'd like to keep our backint product, especially given the hefty price tag
of the TDP option.

I'd appreciate any success stories that anyone knows about. I searched
the archives, but didn't see anything recent there.

 Thanks.

Re: Database backup performance

2001-06-27 Thread Bill Colwell

Zoltan,

I have a very large os/390 server. The last full dbb went at a rate of
3.3 million pages/hr, almost 5 times fater than yours.

Since v1 r1 of adsm I haven't found any tricks to speed this up
except to change hardware. My current system is

cpu: 9672-ra6
tape: 9840 running 3590 emulation
disk: STK SVA.

5 years ago the dbb went at a rate of 510,000 pages an hour.
The hardware then was STK iceberg disk and 3490 tapes, I don't
remember the processor.

I don't think dbb speed has anything to do with the cache hit%.
A sequential process like a full dbb should stay out of the cache since
it would otherwise flood the cache with pages that aren't likely to be
referenced again.

Hope this helps,

Peter,

There is no way in AIX to specify software to be installed in specific
directory rather than /usr or /usr/lpp. Still you can copy installed
software on other filesystems or disks. If you change directory names it
works but you have to change all executable file links from /usr/bin
directory to refer to new files and more painful is future updates. Simple
way is:

1. Create separate filesystem for /usr/tivoli on the other hard disk.
2. If some file system already exists, create soft link with ln -s /existing
/usr/tivoli

Install Tivoli server/client. It will keep on separate disk.

Good luck,

When the TSM Server software for AIX is installed, it rolls out a directory
path of /usr/tivoli/tsm/...
Is it safe to change this, or must the directory paths and names be kept
intact?
We are about to move TSM onto new disk, and the system administrators have
this idea of moving TSM into a different filesystem other than
/usr/tivoli/tsm.
This idea seems questionable to me, but would like to confirm whether this
is safe to do.

for the period of the database backup. This should show which resource is

Any suggestions on how to improve DB backup performance ?

Doing a FULL DB backup of our 15GB ADSM (yes, not TSM YET. Hoping to
convert to 4.1.3 RSN !!) server, sometimes takes 4-hours.

Since I read a previous message about someone having a 52GB DB, I was
wondering how long it takes to backup that much DB since my meager DB takes
so long ? Note, there is no "operator delay" since it goes to a 3494
ATL, using 3490E drives. I was thinking about moving it to 3590 MAGSTAR but
wasn't sure if it would make much of a difference since the only real
change would be reduction/elimination of tape mounts (currently uses
9-cartridges). Since it is a robot, this would save a few minutes at most.

I have tried increasing the BUFPOOL value (from 32MB to 80MB) with little
noticable improvement. I still haven't reached/sustained the illusive 98%
Cache Utilization !

Since the ADSM address space working set size has often exceed 110MB, I was
wondering what was reasonable (or expected) for thise size DB. How much
further should I increase the BUFPOOL value ?

Del,

Indeed, the msdb database has to be restored but, according to the
redbook, it has to be done after :

- With TDP for SQL 1.1.1, I restored the master.dat file
- I tried to restart the SQL server and it fails ...

So, after restarting the SQL server, I am supposed to restore the msdb
database but the SQL server does not restart ...

The piece that I didn't see you mention was
restoring the "msdb" database. That is necessary.
See Appendix B of the TDP for SQL V1 User's Guide.

Also, take a look at the new TDP for SQL Redbook
for more details on using TDP for SQL for disaster recovery.
The redbook examples show the restore using TDP for SQL 2.2
but, you can at least follow the general process used.
You can find it at:

Re: Database backup performance

2001-06-27 Thread Zoltan Forray/AC/VCU

I guess I should have clarified that the server is on OS/390, not *NIX !!

Thanks for all the responses on how long it takes. Now, how about ways to
improve the speed ?

I am trying a backup to 3590 drives, to see how much of a difference it
makes. So far, there does seem to be a speed difference.

I also went through the ADSM job log and collected some statistics.

The last FULL DB backup took more than 5-hours for 3665050 pages !!!

ADSM 3.1.2.90 on AIX 4.3.3-06

2001-06-27 Thread irene

We were running ADSM 3.1.2.90 on AIX 4.2.1 and it behaved
normally. When we migrated AIX to 4.3.3-06, ADSM slowed
down to unacceptable response times. For example, a backup
that used to take 5 minutes now takes 50 minutes. The operating
system seems to be performing O.K. All of this is being done on
a test machine at the moment. Does anyone have any ideas
why this is happening? Should we have done a complete overwrite
rather than a migrate when moving to AIX 4.3.3-06 from AIX 4.2.1?
Thank-you for any insight provided.

Incremental DB Backup Not Clearing Log

2001-06-27 Thread Andy Carlson

I am running TSM 3.7.4, on an AIX box. I have about 4.8GB of log space,
in roll forward mode. Up until last week, everything was
peachy. Starting last week, the database backuptrigger would kick, do
an incremental, then not free the log space. I discovered by accident
(the log filled up, and I had to do an emergency extend) that setting it
to normal mode, then back to roll-forward allowed the next incremental
or full to clear the log. Has anyone seen this? Thanks for any info.

Re: SQL Server Disaster Recovery question

2001-06-27 Thread Ruddy STOUDER

Ruddy,

The piece that I didn't see you mention was
restoring the "msdb" database. That is necessary.
See Appendix B of the TDP for SQL V1 User's Guide.

Also, take a look at the new TDP for SQL Redbook
for more details on using TDP for SQL for disaster recovery.
The redbook examples show the restore using TDP for SQL 2.2
but, you can at least follow the general process used.
You can find it at:

   www.redbooks.ibm.com

Or... here is a direct link:

Re: Can TSM directory paths, names be changed?

2001-06-27 Thread Vibhute, Bandu

I am testing our Novell Netware 4.11 servers to see if they are backing up NDS
(to see that all rights are preserved upon restore) to an ADSM server running
version 3.7.1. I believe the Novell servers are running client 3.1.1 of ADSM.
All of my servers seem to be failing on the scheduled backup of NDS. In my
dsmerrorlog I get the following:
ANS1071E Invalid Domain Name Entered: 'NDS'
ANS1512E Scheduled Event 'ADM-INCR_ActApps1' Failed. Return Code=4

I get this on all my servers. In my DSM.OPT file I have the following line

DOMAINSYS: APPS: USER: NDS

Can anyone help?

Re: Database backup performance

2001-06-27 Thread Richard Sims

Doing the math on the quoted database backup sizes and times, plus
my own, shows customers experiencing a db backup data rate of
3 - 4 MB/sec. That is well below the capabilities of the disk and
tape technology in use, and points to the often-criticized TSM
database system being the drag on performance. And many customers
experiencing this are using today's fastest processors, so it
looks like only architectural relief in the TSM database system
will help.

Re: TSM and backint success stories

2001-06-27 Thread Kauffman, Tom

We run a nightly online backup and a weekly offline with TDP for R3 -- and
were doing the same when it was called 'backint'. There's no change to the
product, just the version. Our database is running at 560 GB (roughly) right
now. If you haven't done an online with backint yet, be advised that it's
not an incremental, it is a true full backup with the database up and open,
You will generate a fair number of redo logs during the backup, depending on
system activity at the time. As far as 'supported configuration' -- you
aren't currently in a supported configuration at all, and 'backint' the PRPQ
product is no longer supported. What you really have to pay attention to are
the version(s) of the TSM api that your version of backint will work with,
and the versions of SAP that it will work with.

TSM Web Client on MS Cluster Node

2001-06-27 Thread Mertens, Chris

I currently have TSM configured and working properly on a Microsoft Cluster
Server. I have three nodes configured, one for each computer in the cluster
and a third for the cluster node (shared drives). We extensively use the
web client on all of our other TSM nodes and would like to be able to use it
for the cluster node as well. I've been able to configure it on each of the
nodes for the computers in the cluster, but not the cluster node itself.

Anybody have an idea what the true average db entry for an object is? How
much space is really consumed per database entry for a backup object?
We're
taught 400-800 bytes per entry but this seems high.

Perhaps we can arrive at this empirically by getting an idea from some of
you about how many objects you have in your db and the size of that db.
We'll do math.

I have a customer with about 2 billion files. We're trying to size a db or
two to back this up. We're thinking at least four servers to handle this.

So some numbers please: number of items in the database and the db size.

Database backup performance

2001-06-27 Thread Zoltan Forray/AC/VCU

Re: SQL backup failed.

2001-06-27 Thread Del Hoobler

Bo,

-2147024891 is AccessDenied.
This is a security/permissions/access rights error code.

Does the SQL Server user id used by TDP for SQL have the
SQL Server SysAdmin Fixed Server Role?

Does the Windows NT user id that actually runs the
scheduler for TDP for SQL have admin authority?

The return code that the scheduler sees from a COMMAND
type schedule is a return code generated from the
command file execution and not the commands that it runs.
To determine success or failure for certain,
examine the sqldsm.log.

I am running ADSM 3.7 on AIX 4.3.2 and have intermittant problems with
an Oracle backup. Oracle is version 8.1.5. We use BMC SQL Backtrack to
backup the Oracle database and move that backup to storage via ADSM.

Once in a while, I receive errors through SQL backtrack:
[dtodump 180482} DT-01254E: Program error 11 (Segmentation fault),
saving core file in
'/datatools/obacktrack-3.2.80.3/cdump/dtodump-06.18.2001-21:22-180482/core'

According to the logs, everything is fine with ADSM.

I know DTODUMP is a SQL Backtrack function. I've been advised to check
the recommended API levels for ADSM to work with this version of SQL
Backtrack. Has anyone else come across similar problems using Backtrack
& ADSM?

Re: SQL Server Disaster Recovery question

Ruddy,

The piece that I didn't see you mention was
restoring the "msdb" database. That is necessary.
See Appendix B of the TDP for SQL V1 User's Guide.

Also, take a look at the new TDP for SQL Redbook
for more details on using TDP for SQL for disaster recovery.
The redbook examples show the restore using TDP for SQL 2.2
but, you can at least follow the general process used.
You can find it at:

The library libXApi.sl can't be opened. After some research I've found the
following. The ADSM client, Informix and the operating system are all 64
bits, however the API and hence the library is 32 bits. This explains the
communication error.

I've asked IBM to provide me the 64bits library of libXApi.sl, but all they
can say is 'You should use the TDP for Informix' and they don't seem to know
if a 64bits library exists?

Is anybody taking a backup of a 64bits version of Informix via onbar? Where
can I find the 64 bits version of the library libXApi.sl ?

Any input would be greatly appreciated,
