Dave, a gradual upgrade of the clients will work fine. I have done this

I have 2 customers that have finally gotten around to upgrading
their
servers from ADSM to TSM. The first customer is at ADSM for AIX V2, and
is
going to TSM for AIX V4.1 or V4.2. We are planning on upgrading all
clients
eventually to V4.x, but we need to find out if we have to do this
IMMEDIATELY or if we can just gradually upgrade them a few at a time.
Just
how compatible is a V2 client with a V4 server?
The second customer still has a few HP-UX V10.20 machines and is
installing 4.2. The last client that was written for HP-UX V10.20 was
ADSM
3.1.0.8. Will this ADSM client level work with an TSM 4.2 server?

I understand the support issue - this will not be a supported
configuration until all clients are at a supported level of TSM. I just
want to know if it will work or not until I can get all clients upgraded
to
a supported level.
Money is not the root of all evil - full backups are.

Re: Slow restores on Unix

2001-09-18 Thread Pétur Eyþórsson

Hi Paul

Tivoli Storage Manager offers alot of tools to opimize restore and backup.
If you have a high speed network you could try optimizeing the TCPnodelay
parameter to YES from NO

If you have enugh cpu power and enugh memorry you could try opimizing these
parameters

Increase the TCPWINDOWZIE parameter

If you think this is a communication problem you shold consider the
TCPBUFFSIZE parameter, you should be avare tha this parameter requers more
memmory.

If you are restoring from a multible volumes you could increase the
Resourceutilization parameter. this can be wery CPU exensive.

But still Paul there is no way of knowing why you have slow restores, from
the information you give us. I recommend you try this and if this dosent
work you should try focusing on the way you backup youre data then. you
could try to backup your directorys to a disk storagepools, enable disk
cache, or enable collocation for this client.

Hope this helps.

Re: 3590 Drives via SAN in Windows 2000

2001-09-18 Thread Rob Schroeder

The drive will autodetect if you do this.

When windows 2000 autodetects the drives, go into the manage portion of the
server and disable the drives. Then be sure that within Tivoli the device
driver service is set to autostart. Once you reboot again you will have
the name of the devices within the TSM utility.

If there are any questions just let me know, we have this exact setup here.

Adaptive Differencing

Can anyone give me a better explanation of how Adaptive Differencing
actually works with existing filespaces and volumes. Going by the White
Paper I downloaded it sounds like it wants you to make a full new backup

LAN have you seen marked performance improvements? Or is it more beneficial
only in a dial up environment?

The 3494 is conected via LAN to the W2k server. The drives are conected with fibre channel to the brocade and this conected to the server via fibre channel too.

How can I define the drives in the W2k server? The server doesn't autodetect the drives. Do I need to install some driver?

TIA.

I doubt if TSM can logically move its records in that short of a time.

It's so easy to move using TSM processes, why would you want to use some
other utility. The good thing about using TSM to do the move is you don't
even have to take the TSM server down. All you have to do is allocate and
format the new volume, then add it as a mirror and delete the old volume.

When is 30% of 100 equal to 21 ?

2001-09-18 Thread Zoltan Forray/AC/VCU

An interesting anomoly.

I did a Q STG and got the following:

Storage Device EstimatedPctPct
Pool NameClass NameCapacity Util Migr
   (MB)
--- -- -- - -
SPBACKUP DISK 100,921.7 30.8 30.8

Now, my simple math says that 30% utilized of 100G should be roughly 30G.

However, when I started migration, I got:

ANR1001I,Migration process 20 ended for storage pool SPBACKUP.
ANR0986I Process 20 for MIGRATION running in the BACKGROUND processed
120840
items for a total of 22,116,016,128 bytes with a completion state of
SUCCESS at

which is app. 21GB.

No, I do not cache this stg:

Management class and TDP for Oracle with RMAN

2001-09-18 Thread Thiha Than

hi Vicente,

Please try to shorten the mgmt class name like Phillip has suggested. If
still doesn't work,

1. please turn on the API tracing. Use api and api_detail flags and get
me the trace file.

2. please get the output of your copy group values of all the mgmt class
in your domain that your TDPO node is registered with? To obtain the copy
group values, from admin client command issue:
tsm: TSMSERV1> q copy * * f=d

3. are you using default TDPO config file name from the install
directory? Because, in your note you mention TDPO.CONF as your TDPO
config file. So I am not quite sure you are using the file name as
tdpo.opt or tdpo.conf.

Thiha

TDPO_MGMT_CLASS_2, 3 and 4 but only for the duplex copy option.
I'd like to have one management class for archive log files (sending
it
to
disk storage pools) and another for database files (sending it to tape
storage pools).

For a TSM Client on W2K..when you have "passwordaccess generate" the
password is stored in the registry on the client.

Does anyone know where exactly in the registry this is stored??

TSM OS/390 DB "volumes"

2001-09-18 Thread Zoltan Forray/AC/VCU

Is there anything internal for a OS/390 TSM DataBase "volume" (i.e. the
VSAM LINEAR d/s), that prevents me from moving it using a standard system
utility ?

Could I move the linear d/s, using FDR or DSS or are there internal
location-type pointers that would destroy the DB if pyhsically moved using
non-TSM processes ?

Hi all,

Just an additional info about our empty tape request problem.

Our empty tape ( not scratch tape ) problem is caused because we don't have
enough space to keep all the tapes inside the 3494 library so we have to
checkout some lastest used tapes outside library and we have to checkin some
scratch tapes everyday for night backup/archive use.

Some one suggested to run a audit library, any idea how long it will take?
We have filled up the tapes in two frames of 3494 with two drivers each.

Thanks for your help!

Phillip

Phillip - How they got outside is the key: if you did something like a
Move Media, they would get a state of MOUNTABLENotinlib, so
would be eligible for mounting. Perform queries to check the state of
your inside and outside volumes and adjust as needed.

For a TSM Client on W2K..when you have "passwordaccess generate" the

Re: Tape problem

2001-09-18 Thread Prather, Wanda

You can do this:

select * from volhistory where volume_name='D00190'

to find out how the tape was used last.

Another thing to try:

q actlog begindate=today-10 search=D00190

to see what has happened to that tape in the last 10 days.
What sometimes happens: If TSM has trouble mounting a scratch tape (due to
problems with the robot or problems with the drive or problems with the tape
itself) it will automatically mark the tape as PRIVATE so it doesn't go
after the tape again on the next scratch request. If the actually problem
was caused by the robot or the drive, once that problem is resolved, you
just change the status back to scratch since there never was anything really
wrong with the tape.

If there is no valid data on the tape, and you don't think there is anything
wrong with it, you can change it back to scratch with:

update libv 3494LIB D00190 status=scratch

HELP -Client version issue!

Does anyone know if you can update a clients version information on the TSM
server? Example - The TSM server says that a node is version 4.2.0.0 when in
reality the node is at 3.7. Now when the client tries to contact the server
for anything (schedule, backup, restore) it fails with the error that says
the client is downlevel. Is there anyway to fix this other than updating the
client code on the client itself?

How do I force TSM to use the inside one? I found it requested to mount

Dwight - Beware that this is a non-trivial issue... If the client had been
at a given level (e.g., 4.2) and was then downgraded (say, to 3.7),
the data stored at the 4.2 level will still be in the server in the specific
format that is peculiar to that level of software. Attempting to restore
it from a lower-level client is problematic at best.

If that client's situation now is "messy", you may want to consider doing
a Rename Node to start over with that client, if that's realistic.
That should certainly reset the client level in the server.

Hi all,

Just an additional info about our empty tape request problem.

Our empty tape ( not scratch tape ) problem is caused because we don't
have
enough space to keep all the tapes inside the 3494 library so we have to
checkout some lastest used tapes outside library and we have to checkin
some
scratch tapes everyday for night backup/archive use.

Some one suggested to run a audit library, any idea how long it will
take?
We have filled up the tapes in two frames of 3494 with two drivers each.

Thanks for your help!

Phillip - How they got outside is the key: if you did something like a
Move Media, they would get a state of MOUNTABLENotinlib, so
would be eligible for mounting. Perform queries to check the state of
your inside and outside volumes and adjust as needed.

Hi Maklári,

Thank you for the quick answer. But the Domino guys need a little more
info. What will be fixed within this release ? Are you using an english
Domino ?
I`ve downloaded an TDP 1.1.1 . I suppose that will be ok also... .

Holger,

In addition to Maklári Sándor's suggestions...

Please keep in mind that there are a few Lotus Domino SPRs (APARS)
that deal with some archived log extents not being released.

SPR #CLOL4P4E7M - Fixed a problem where after log extents were
processed by backup software they were
not reused or deleted by Domino.
Fixed in Domino Server 5.07 (available now)

SPR #SCON4W3UZD - Fixed a problem where using the backup APIs, only
70 archive log extents could be processed at one time.
Fixed in Domino Server 5.09 (est. date: Nov.)

SPR #JCHN4YPJJ7 - Fixed a problem where the last extent that was restored
from the backup product was not being removed when
the restore was completed which occurred when doing
a restore with transactional logging active.
Fixed in Domino Server 5.09 (est. date: Nov.)

Again, these are Lotus SPRs (APARS) that are fixed when
the specific Lotus Domino server is updated.

Thanks,

Del

Re: empty tape question

2001-09-18 Thread Ramnarayan, Sean A [EDS]

Hi

On ADSM you got the option within the storage pools to specify
whether you want to use any scratch volumes or you can specify which
scratch volumes to use.
I think your problem is within your storage pools where you are
specifying which scratch volumes
to use and not randomly choose any scratch volume that's available
within the library.
Make sure about this before doing a library inventory because if you
checkout a volume from
ADSM its database is aware of the volumes being checked out.

Hi,

I have a question about empty tapes needed when TSM does reclamation or
migration. We have some empty tapes inside the library and some are
outside.
How do I force TSM to use the inside one? I found it requested to mount
outside empty tapes even there were still some inside the library.
Thanks for your help!

Re: empty tape question

2001-09-18 Thread Maurice van 't Loo

If you do an audit library, TSM knows that the tapes are not longer in the
lib anymore.

If you change the empty tapes offen, you can schedule jl. an audit and after
that a checkin with search=yes and stat=scratch

Greetings,
   Maurice

Transaction Path

2001-09-18 Thread Matthew Large

Hi All,

I'm not sure if anyone can help me, but I thought I'd try..
I'm looking for a diagram which illustrates the path of a transaction and
it's records through the server.

None of the manuals have quite what I'm looking for, so I was wondering if
my TSM colleagues around the world have ever needed to represent this part
of the server. Of course I wouldn't dream of using your work, I'm just
looking for ideas which may help me explain this process.

Do I ask too much?
You tell me..

Many Thanks,
Matthew Large

Domino TDP and transaction logs

2001-09-18 Thread Holger Bitterlich

hello *sm community,

we have an Installation of LotusDomino 5.6a and TDP 1.1.0.0 running on NT 4
SP6 boxes. There are 4320 domino db`s with roundabout 60 gigs of data. The
domino guys activated transaction logging in archive mode. We make an
all-4-hours-backup of these logfiles on a regular basis. For doing this we
use these 2 commands:

domdsmc arch
domdsmc inactivate

But we must see that this backup only catches translog files older than
appoximately 1,5 days. So do we have a large gap ??? (If so, very bad. So
bad, that I can`t belive.) I can`t see within TSM any possibility to get
ALL files. As far as I understand the backup strategy, the TDP can only
backup the files that the domino server is providing him, a kind of giving
the files free to backup. I read that the domino Server is allocating some
transaction log in advance. We can see that the server is not backing up
roundabout 135 transaction logs. Are these not backuped db`s the
preallocated files ??? Such a huge amount?
Do I have a problem, or is this the the regular behaviour?

Thx a lot !!!
