Unfortunately, 4.2.1.9 for Windows 2K presents another problem.
Creating a backupset on an Ultrium tape drive with TSM 4.2.1.9 will
regularly crash the TSM server. We've recreated the problem with two
entirely separate systems. (The backupset gets created properly, but
then the system promptly goes down hard.)

Tivoli is aware of the problem, and is working on it.

I'm surprised you are seeing this. Normally, an ungraceful halt will not
cause drive problems: when the system comes back up and TSM starts
communications with the library, drives will be unloaded and operations
should resume as normal. What kind of library are you using?

The HALT Administrator Command should shutdown TSM. After that a normal
Windows Shutdown should work. If you are talking about a way to automate,
you can do the dsmadmc HALT command in batch, no problem. I think you can do
the system restart also, but that does not do a poweroff of the machine.

notes from a unloaddb/loaddb

2002-01-27 Thread Suad Musovich

For those that are interested, we just completed a unload/loadformat/load of our
TSM database.

Our system is a RS6K-F80 running AIX4.3.3 running TSM 4.2.1.8. The database is
60GB in size with a 97% utilization. Disk is on an ESS connected via FC.
We used an LTO drive to run the unload/load.

The unload took just under 16hours. It stopped displaying the progress after
a couple of hours (when are Tivoli going to fix this).

The load took 10 hours. Database utilization dropped to 61%

This is the first unload/load since we installed this system just over 12 months
ago.

I remember running this on our old Sun server round a year ago with a slightly smaller
DB running TSM3.7.3.
The unload ran for a similar time but the load ran for almost double the time. I
think it may have been the result of a slower disk/CPU.

You could also take a look at Bare Metal Restore - from VERITAS. It was
formerly a TKG product, but TKG was aquired by and megerd into VERITAS.
You can still get BMR for TSM from IBM channels.

Actually, I think there is a difference. MOVE DATA's intent is to clear
off a volumes as fast as possible, and is why aggregates are not rebuilt.
I would agree with you if the offsite volumes were first deleted, and then
a backup of the primary pool was run. Of course, since this is actually a
mixture of the two, it would work either way.

Re: TSM Server connecting to ESS by FC

2002-01-27 Thread Adolph Kahan

If you are going to order your own cables, just look up the specs in
either the IBM sales Manual or in the IBM product Installation manual
and buy them from a reliable dealer and you should have no problems.
When we order cables, we tell our supplier the exact specs: 50u,
multimode and also the connectors: SC, LC, MT-RJ, IBM Duplex Connector
and the length. We have had no problems with any of the cables we have
ordered.

Hello all,
I want to connect a new TSM Server (AIX) to our ESS with a FC Cable.
Our longest FC cable is 31 metres long. But I want to place the server
in a
room, which is more than 31 metres away.
Could anyone show me a Webpage or any other information where I can find
informations about the possibilities to use cables longer than 31
Metres.
Someone told me, that this is the longest possible cable.but I
cannot
believe it.
(I know, this isn't really a TSM question, but if someone could help me,
this
would be great)

Hello all,
I want to connect a new TSM Server (AIX) to our ESS with a FC Cable.
Our longest FC cable is 31 metres long. But I want to place the server
in a
room, which is more than 31 metres away.
Could anyone show me a Webpage or any other information where I can find
informations about the possibilities to use cables longer than 31
Metres.
Someone told me, that this is the longest possible cable.but I
cannot
believe it.
(I know, this isn't really a TSM question, but if someone could help me,
this
would be great)
Greetings
