Hello John,

In the following error message, I can see that you are using 'backup_type'
as 'file' (-t file). In my knowledge, there is no parameter like 'file' to
support backup_type. Can you tell me any reason why you are using
backup_type as file?

2002-07-09 Thread Zlatko Krastev/ACIT

Ports 1500 and 1501 do *not* need to be bi-directional.
Connection on port 1500 is always initiated from the node to the server.
Connection on port 1501 is always from the server to the node. Just
firewall admin should set them correct.

I agree on adding the actual IP address for the TCPCLIENTADDRESS option.
This is necessary in machines with more than one network card as well. I
usually query the activity log and search for the node to see what IP it's
actually using to connect to the TSM server. Then I ask the administrator
to use that IP in their dsm.sys.

Also, if you are connecting over firewalls, ports 1500 and 1501 must be
open bi-directional for communication to take place.

I have had this problem with several servers. I solved the problem on
several by utilizing the IP address in the dsm.opt as the TCPCLIENTADDRESS
instead of the node name.

Hi all,

We are running into an issue with several of our AIX servers. Every 1 to 2
days, one of the client servers incremental backup is "missed" or fails
because of:

ANR2716E Schedule prompter was not able to contact client SY using type 1
(10.160.97.213 1501).

I have checked all the obvious:

1. dsmc sched is running.
2. There are no apparent network problems.

It seems to me that the process: dsmc sched just hangs.
Once I kill it and re-start it, the backup runs fine.

These are my levels: Server: AIX 4.3.3 ML10 TSM 4.2.1.7
   Client: AIX 4.3.3 ML8 TSM Client 4.2.0.0

Anyone has any ideas of what could be wrong? Is this a known problem?

Thanks in advance,

Beatriz

Lars,

I do not know what is the idea behind sending primary tapes off-site (DR
??) but this does not help at all in case tape gets somehow damaged. You
will learn it the hard way - when you need to restore from the broken
tape.
Migration threshold set to anything between 0 and 100% will not
force/prevent reclamation. They are just different
You already gave the answer: update the volumes to readonly or readwrite,
check them in the library and lower reclamation threshold (in any order).
BTW: Subjects are very useful to track answers on a mail list with many
posts (like this one).
Burak, offsite is for copypool volumes only (look at note 3 for UPD VOL).
Primary ones have to be unavailable.

Hi TSM Guys,

I have a customer who moves volumes from a primary storage pool to an
offsite location by setting the volumes to "UNAVAILABLE". The storage
pool's migration threshold is set to 100% for spacerclamation to be
prevented. What do I have to consider if I want to manually start space
reclamation on the unavailable volumes?
Will it be enough to just check-in the volumes, change their access to
ReadWrite, and then start the space reclamation by lowering the
reclamation
threshhold gradually?

Thanx a lot

Have you defined COPYSTGpool and COPYContinue=No on the primary pool?
If copypool is out of space and COPYC=N the whole write will fail.

We just got a TSM server up and running (still in a testing phase but

I recently tried to backup a new node I created and got this error -

Now, the server only has an 80GB partition for data storage at the
moment. That is split into 7 10GB files and one 4GB.
The 4GB is 95% full but the others are around 30 - 40% full.

No that's not it.. it would work regardless.

Doublecheck what domain the node is assigned to and verify it is backing up
with the management class and therefore stgpool you are thinking it should
be.

I'd recommend looking through your activity log on or about where the
problem started and see if TSM logged anything relevant. You can find out
when the first problem occurred by doing a "q act begind=today-7
search=full" or look for the AN msg ID you're getting about the storage pool
being full. Then when you see the time/date stamp, do a "q act
begind=today-? Begint=??:??" and rear around that timeframe to see what
other messages there are. I'm sure something happened somewhere if it was
working and then stopped.

Do a "q vol f=d" and check the "Access" field on your disk volumes. They
should all be "ReadWrite". If they are "ReadOnly" then this would explain
why TSM isn't writing to them and telling you the storage pool is full even
though at first glance it appears it isn't.

TSM can change the access automatically to "ReadOnly" or even something else
if an event occurs the warrents it. E.g. if TSM loses access to the
filesystem It's likely to mark all the volumes on that filesystem to
"unavailable". There are also cases where it'll change it to some of the
other values. To see why it did so you have to scan through the activity log

Re: TSM storage problem

2002-07-09 Thread Simeon Johnston

It's set to "No Limit". The nodes in question are a Linux/x86 and I
tried a Win2k just to test it.
I tried backing up maybe 200MB off the Win2k node and that failed. The
Linux boxen is probably 2GB total.
Nothing big at all.

2002-07-09 Thread David Longo

Two quick suggestions.

1. Your pool seems to be named STORAGE.. Run this command:
q stg STORAGE f=d, and look at the field "Maximum Size Threshold"
If it says "No Limit" then ok there. Else this is the maximum size
of a file/object that can be sent to this pool.

2.. What is the node you are trying to backup? If it is an Oracle DB
or similar, it may indeed br trying to send a file or files at once that are
larger than the available space in your disk pool. Basically the solution
to that is to increase size of disk pool or have pool emptier when this
node backs up. (Lower MIGRATION to empty the disk pool).

Re: Delayed Schedule Start

2002-07-09 Thread Etienne Brodeur

What's your Schedule Randomization percentage and what is the backup
window for this schedule? If I recall correctly randomization is for
every schedule even if it only runs on one node. And the ramdomization
starts from the moment the nodes connect to the server not from the start
of the window.

backup window is 4 hours.
schedule starts at 1 AM
randomization is set to 25%
node connects at 230 AM
schedules will start between 230 and 330 AM.

Could this be it?

Re: Script question

2002-07-09 Thread Etienne Brodeur

Hi,

It really depends on what platform you are using. We have setup
such a script on AIX and Linux (and it should work on any other unixes).
Here is an exemple:

#!/usr/bin/ksh
/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin/dsmadmc -id=admin -password=admin
-outfile=/usr/tivoli/tsm/server/bin/scripts/tmpfiles/checkout run
checktapes
echo "Voici les tapes qui sont a envoyer a l'exterieur qui sont dans la
porte du LTO 3583" > /usr/tivoli/tsm/server/bin/scripts/tmpfiles/checkout2
echo "" >> /usr/tivoli/tsm/server/bin/scripts/tmpfiles/checkout2
cat /usr/tivoli/tsm/server/bin/scripts/tmpfiles/checkout| grep B00 | awk
-F" " '{print $1}'>> /usr/tivoli/tsm/server/bin/scripts/tmpfiles/checkout2
echo "" >> /usr/tivoli/tsm/server/bin/scripts/tmpfiles/checkout2
echo "Merci et bonne journee" >>
/usr/tivoli/tsm/server/bin/scripts/tmpfiles/checkout2
cat /usr/tivoli/tsm/server/bin/scripts/tmpfiles/checkout2 | grep B00 | awk
-F" " '{print $1}'| while read line ; do
/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin/dsmadmc -id=admin -password=admin checkout
libv 3583 $line rem=bulk checkl=no
/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin/dsmadmc -id=admin -password=admin update vol
$line access=offsite
done
mail -s"Check Out Tapes" [EMAIL PROTECTED] <
/usr/tivoli/tsm/server/bin/scripts/tmpfiles/checkout2

So this identifies the tapes to checkout (line2)
Then checks them out (line 8 and 9)
Then updates them to offsite (line8 and 10)
Then it emails us the results (lines 3,4,6,7 and 12)

Line 5 extratcs our tapes numbers (they all start with B00) then line 9
reads each lines with a tape number and does line 10 and 11 to each tape
in the list (checkout2) putting the tape number in place of $line.

Hope this helps and sorry for the less then clear explanations!

Subject:Script question

Hopefully a simple question:

I have a select script that finds the tapes I want to be processed by
MOV DRM, is there a way to pipe the results from the select back into
that command? Here's the select:

select volume_name,state from drmedia where (volume_name in (select
volume_name from volumes where status='FULL') and state='MOUNTABLE') or
volume_name in (select volume_name from libvolumes where
last_use='DbBackup')

And I want the volumes returned from that to be processed by MOV DRM.

The other option would be outputting to a tmp file and creating a
command for each volume, but that seems more complicated than it should
be.

Check your randomize setting with 'q stat'. By default it is 25%.

You can set it with set randomize.

TSM storage problem

2002-07-09 Thread Simeon Johnston

We just got a TSM server up and running (still in a testing phase but
it's running).
I recently tried to backup a new node I created and got this error -
ANS1329S Server out of data storage space

Now, the server only has an 80GB partition for data storage at the
moment. That is split into 7 10GB files and one 4GB.
The 4GB is 95% full but the others are around 30 - 40% full.

Storage pool info --

Why would I get this error if there is more than enough room for a backup?
I'm new to TSM administration so maybe I'm missing something.

ANR8376I Message

2002-07-09 Thread Jim Sporer

When I do a Query Mount command I get two ANR8376I messages about mount
points reserved in device class: status: RESERVED. We are running TSM
version 4.2.1.7 and using a 3494 that we are sharing between two TSM
servers. I was curious if somebody knows what that message means. We
have 6 3590 tape drives and in spite of getting that message on one of the
TSM servers I can still use all 6 tape drives on the other TSM server, so
how can two tape drives be reserved on the other TSM server?

Hi Gisbert,
you're right, things seem to have changed since my last contact with the Connect Agent

With TDP Oracle I remember there's a tool called tdposync to synchronize backups
between rman (oracle) and the TSM server. Hopefully
there's a similar tool for TDP Domino so that you don't have to use undocumented
features to do the trick.

Good luck!

Hi Michael,

when we do a 'q files nodename' the result looks like This:

Node Name Filespace Platform
Filespace CapacityPct
  Name
  Type(MB) Util
-- ---
  - -
X_LN\\Y\d$WinNT NTFS

X_LNZ4.DOMLOGSWinNT
API:DominoData 0.0 0.0
X_LNZ4.DOMDBS WinNT
API:DominoData0.0 0.0

So it looks like all databases together are treated as one filespace. Is
this a bug, misconfiguration or is it normal?

The idea is to parse the actlog. Find the cartridges names, then add 'move drmedia'

Hopefully a simple question:

I have a select script that finds the tapes I want to be processed by
MOV DRM, is there a way to pipe the results from the select back into
that command? Here's the select:

select volume_name,state from drmedia where (volume_name in (select
volume_name from volumes where status='FULL') and state='MOUNTABLE') or
volume_name in (select volume_name from libvolumes where
last_use='DbBackup')

And I want the volumes returned from that to be processed by MOV DRM.

The other option would be outputting to a tmp file and creating a
command for each volume, but that seems more complicated than it should
be.

Yes, absolutely. Have them run the dsm program and they will be able to

Your only real choice is to restore data from other applications (to
original machines if possible), and then have TSM backup the data. If you
can't restore data to their original homes, you would have to restore them
to staging servers and then backup/archive the data with TSM.

There's no market for any kind of 'converter' from one backup app's output
to another app's format; it would be a one-shot deal, and nigh-on impossible
in the case of an app that uses a database to track file locations (like
TSM).

This operation is complex enough that you might consider outsourcing the
work to someone who knows what they're doing and has the equipment to do it;
data conversion of this sort, done by those less capable, would be a
nightmare to unravel later.

Re: Unable to establish TCP connection

2002-07-09 Thread James, Phil

The only way I know to do it is start over. In my shop its usually caused
by the LAN group changing switches and such without telling me.
First check to see if you can ping IP addresses from the host out to the
client and the client to the host. Also, check if your cards are ok at the
clients as well as the host.
If the above checks out the client probably loss the password and you will
need to reestablish it.
That would be my suggestions.

Have you done any upgrades lately of AIX or other?

Hi Michael,

when we do a 'q files nodename' the result looks like This:

Node Name Filespace Platform
Filespace CapacityPct
  Name
  Type(MB) Util
-- ---
  - -
X_LN\\Y\d$WinNT NTFS
138,927.73.60
X_LN\\Y\c$WinNT NTFS

X_LNZ4.DOMLOGSWinNT
API:DominoData 0.0 0.0
X_LNZ4.DOMDBS WinNT
API:DominoData0.0 0.0

So it looks like all databases together are treated as one filespace. Is
this a bug, misconfiguration or is it normal?

Re: Domino TDP leaves old databases

2002-07-09 Thread Michael Bartl

Hi Holger,
with TDP for Lotus Domino every database is treated as if it was one filespace. On
your TSM Server you can see this using "q files
".

Like with the ba-client TSM updates the filespace when you perform an incremental
backup and otherwise leaves the filespace as it
is. So when you stop backing up a certain filespace (=domino database), this
filespaces active files (documents) will stay unchanged
in TSM forever.

When you want to discontinue backing up a database and you don't want to keep this db
in TSM, just delete it using "delete files
" in the admin interface (dsmadmc).

Good luck,
regards,
Michael

Hi *sm`ers

the amount of data pertaining our Lotus Domino Servers is enlarging
enormous. The domino guys tell me that they can restore very old databases
although the domino db`s are deleted a long time ago. When we try to
restore such an old database which on the domino server has been deleted a
long time ago, we still see the last version of this db. How can this
happen ?
Since we backup the transaction logs every hour there is a second problem.
The transaction log backups are retained - no deletion happened !
Why is no Log inactivated ?

We use TSM 3.7.3 on server side, and tsm 4.1.16 with TDP for Domino 1.1.2
on Client side.

Our translog backup script looks like this:

set domlogdir=c:\ssw\tivoli\tsm\log\online_nt_dom_tlog.log
domdsmc arch /logfile=%domlogdir%
domdsmc inactivate /logfile=%domlogdir%

The log output is:

Re: Antwort: odbc ?

2002-07-09 Thread Andy Raibeck

The ODBC driver is a completely separate entity from the rest of the
backup-archive client. It has no dependencies on the b-a client, and the
b-a client has no dependencies on the ODBC driver. Therefore, in order to
help reduce the already substantial size of the client package, the ODBC
driver was packaged separately. (Note: the ODBC driver used to be around
14 MB in size, but starting with version 5.1, we stopped shipping the
English version of the MDAC. This significantly reduced the size of the
ODBC driver package to around 5 MB. But for now, it is still a separate
package.)

As far as the API goes, it is always installed with the b-a client since
certain b-a components rely on the API (such as the DSMCUTIL utility). The
API SDK (not to be confused with the API) is included in the client
package, but its size is negligible.

An ODBC driver allows you to use a relational database product such as SQL
to query the database and display the results. Client installation does
not
set include everything we need. You have to install API and ODBC
separately.

Domino TDP leaves old databases

2002-07-09 Thread Holger Bitterlich

Hi *sm`ers

the amount of data pertaining our Lotus Domino Servers is enlarging

Total Domino transaction log files ready for archive: 4
Total Domino transaction log files archived: 4
Throughput rate: 5,193.11 Kb/Sec
Total bytes transferred: 268,439,552

ACD5221I The C:\ssw\Tivoli\TSM\domino\domdsm.log log file has been pruned
successfully.
Number of Logs Inactivated: 0

The weekly online backup script is like that:

set logdir=c:\ssw\tivoli\tsm\log\domdsm.log
domdsmc selective * /subdir=yes /logfile=%domlogdir% >> %logdir%
domdsmc inactivate /logfile=%domlogdir% >> %logdir%

and the output reads like this:

Total Domino databases inspected: 4,433
Total Domino databases backed up: 4,433
Total Domino databases excluded: 0
Throughput rate: 4,820.92 Kb/Sec
Total bytes transferred: 99,557,318,730

Migrating data from other applications

2002-07-09 Thread Brenda Collins

Hi!

Does anyone have any tips on how they migrated their archived or 'long term
retention' backup data from other backup applications? We have multiple
years worth of data and on various tape formats.

Thanks in advance for any information you can provide.

[no subject]

2002-07-09 Thread Lars Bebensee

Hi TSM Guys,

I have a customer who moves volumes from a primary storage pool to an
offsite location by setting the volumes to "UNAVAILABLE". The storage
pool's migration threshold is set to 100% for spacerclamation to be
prevented. What do I have to consider if I want to manually start space
reclamation on the unavailable volumes?
Will it be enough to just check-in the volumes, change their access to
ReadWrite, and then start the space reclamation by lowering the reclamation
threshhold gradually?

Thanx a lot

Lars

Different value between Objects inspected and objects archived > 900 during archive processing

2002-07-09 Thread Gerd Becker

Hi *sm'ers

in the statistics of my archive-job I found a Value of ojects inspected
6800 and ojects archived of 5900. This is a difference of more than 900
objects. Has anyone an idea, what the reason for this big value may be? The
server runs with tsm version 4.2.2 and the client is Version 3.7.

Thank you for response

Mit freundlichen Grüßen / best regards

Hi,
What is the purpose of ODBC files like (IP22519_ODBC.EXE) in the same folder

Does not the client installation set include everything we need? (i mean why is
it seperate?)

Re: Win2K cluster question

2002-07-09 Thread John Naylor

Yes, it is all working ok now.
One gotcha we found was that our NT guy set up the option file for the local
drive clients with

clusterno

This was a mistake as you dont want the option there at all on the local
clients.
Specifying the option just caused duplicate backups of the cluster drive.

I see you have your answer (in short, it is YES), but wanted to bring to
your attention of an issue I had to find out the hard way:

Follow the directions in the book for proper installation and configuration
of the cluster-aware "generic service" resource but, be aware that there is
a typo in the book, page 23 - you also require the switch /CLUSTERNODE:YES
in order for that CLI command to properly install and configure that
service. I had to call support on that one, but I do not remember the APAR
for it.

Gianluca,

if you have MSCS cluster set-up according to the TSM client docs you have
to define 3 nodes for active/passive and 4 nodes for active/active
cluster:
- Machine 1 - node A (local, small)
- Machine 2 - node B (local, small)
- Cluster group X - node X (shared, might be big)
- (optional) Cluster group Y - node Y (shared, might be big)
Assuming local drives and cluster groups Y, Z, etc. are small and we have
to focus only on group X which is 200 GB. Nodes A, B (local), Y, Z go to
small_domain and node X gets registered in big_domain. Or use management
class pointing to another pool as Alexander suggested.
This is according to books. If we make something proprietary we are on our
own.

John,
I'm not sure I understand your question. are you saying you want one
machine in a cluster to be registered to one policy domain and the other
machine in the cluster to be registered to another policy domain? you
would
not be using a cluster this way, what would happen in case of failover?
you
would failover to a machine with a different nodename and different policy
domain, so you would, effectively, be working on a stand alone basis.

We are looking at setting up some win2k clustered TSM clients.
Most of them are fairly small but there is one client with 200gb of data
to
be
backed up.
I want to point all the small clients to use our standard tapepool, with
the big
one pointing to a different tapepool
So the question is :-
Can you have clients within the same cluster registered to different
policy
domains?

Thanks,
John

Re: Client Archive Weekly/Monthly/Quarterly/Yearly

2002-07-09 Thread Phil Vandenberg

It is very interesting watching all of the comments on this very emotive
topic.

The answer to the question 'are you taking monthly backups?' is always
'Yes - of course I am'. Monthly backup is a logical thing, not a physical
thing - does the user need to know the difference? You could even follow up
with 'In fact we take full backups for every day' - but this may be too much
information and again lead to long explanations.

The question from the user stems from lack of trust that you are able to
deliver his data in the event of a problem, so in his case a little
knowledge is a dangerous thing! (must have monthly backups!) . This is not
resolved overnight but as long as your procedures enable full and timely
recovery to any threat to data integrity and availability then you will
cover yourself more than by just producing the mandatory monthly. This has
everything to do with ensuring best practice is implemented.

What the customer wants to hear is 'Yes your data is protected and your SLAs
for data recovery will be met.' If an SLA is not in place, then this is
the way to proceed and a good way to establish trust.

Try it - you do not need to explain progressive incremental or anything like
that, how the job is done is your business, if it isn't, then why is a
professional team employed to do 'backups' - elevate the discussion to the
business level and have the processes in place to back it up, i.e be able to
recover the data no matter what happens in accordance with agreed SLAs.
This is much better investment of $s than in useless
Weekly/Monthly/Quarterly/Yearly cyclic processing.

Paul there are three problems here.

First, when the ordure hits the rotating air movement device, the dumbass
application manager says archly "You *are* taking monthly backups aren't
you?" It doesn't matter how many times you explain, and it doesn't matter
if the particular file that you want isn't on the monthly backup tape, if
you don't have that tape, you are percieved as negligent.

Second, tape cycles are easy to understand, other network backup products
automate that simple process. They ask "why can't this whizz bang product do
something that simple?" The problem is that they don't see the benefits of
incremental backup. They don't see a 15 minute backup window as useful.
For databases, you are reveting to a full backup every night anyway.

Third, you say
.
>Now, the issue of affordability eventually kicks in. That is where you
have
>to decide how think the pad is you where on your butt. Is it 1, 2, 3, etc.
>copies. TSM can do that, but there is a price. But, as you say there is
no
>"limitation" with TSM. You can do it. It is just not tape retention, it
is
>object retention.
.

That may be so in commerce, but in government, the main objective is to not
get your butt kicked. In one sense money has nothing to do with it, once
the expenditure has been approved. So the padding is very thick.
