Re: ANR2716E Schedule prompter was not able to contact client...W HY?
Ports 1500 and 1501 do *not* need to be bi-directional. Connection on port 1500 is always initiated from the node to the server. Connection on port 1501 is always from the server to the node. Just firewall admin should set them correct. I agree on adding the actual IP address for the TCPCLIENTADDRESS option. This is necessary in machines with more than one network card as well. I usually query the activity log and search for the node to see what IP it's actually using to connect to the TSM server. Then I ask the administrator to use that IP in their dsm.sys. Also, if you are connecting over firewalls, ports 1500 and 1501 must be open bi-directional for communication to take place. Greg A. Re: reclamation of unavailable primary tapes (was: w/o subject)
Lars, I do not know what is the idea behind sending primary tapes off-site (DR ??) but this does not help at all in case tape gets somehow damaged. You will learn it the hard way - when you need to restore from the broken tape. Migration threshold set to anything between 0 and 100% will not force/prevent reclamation. They are just different You already gave the answer: update the volumes to readonly or readwrite, check them in the library and lower reclamation threshold (in any order). BTW: Subjects are very useful to track answers on a mail list with many posts (like this one). Burak, offsite is for copypool volumes only (look at note 3 for UPD VOL). Re: TSM storage problem
No that's not it.. it would work regardless. Doublecheck what domain the node is assigned to and verify it is backing up with the management class and therefore stgpool you are thinking it should be. I'd recommend looking through your activity log on or about where the problem started and see if TSM logged anything relevant. You can find out when the first problem occurred by doing a "q act begind=today-7 search=full" or look for the AN msg ID you're getting about the storage pool being full. Then when you see the time/date stamp, do a "q act begind=today-? Begint=??:??" and rear around that timeframe to see what other messages there are. I'm sure something happened somewhere if it was working and then stopped. Do a "q vol f=d" and check the "Access" field on your disk volumes. They should all be "ReadWrite". If they are "ReadOnly" then this would explain why TSM isn't writing to them and telling you the storage pool is full even though at first glance it appears it isn't. TSM can change the access automatically to "ReadOnly" or even something else if an event occurs the warrents it. Two quick suggestions. 1. Your pool seems to be named STORAGE.. Run this command: q stg STORAGE f=d, and look at the field "Maximum Size Threshold" If it says "No Limit" then ok there. Else this is the maximum size of a file/object that can be sent to this pool. 2.. What is the node you are trying to backup? If it is an Oracle DB or similar, it may indeed br trying to send a file or files at once that are larger than the available space in your disk pool. Basically the solution to that is to increase size of disk pool or have pool emptier when this node backs up. (Lower MIGRATION to empty the disk pool). David B. Re: Delayed Schedule Start
What's your Schedule Randomization percentage and what is the backup window for this schedule? If I recall correctly randomization is for every schedule even if it only runs on one node. And the ramdomization starts from the moment the nodes connect to the server not from the start of the window. backup window is 4 hours. schedule starts at 1 AM randomization is set to 25% node connects at 230 AM schedules will start between 230 and 330 AM. Re: Delayed Schedule Start
Check your randomize setting with 'q stat'. By default it is 25%. You can set it with set randomize. bob On Tue, Jul 09, 2002 at 01:33:40PM -0400, Martin, Jon R. wrote: > The below schedule was scheduled for 1 PM. TSM storage problem
We just got a TSM server up and running (still in a testing phase but it's running). I recently tried to backup a new node I created and got this error - ANS1329S Server out of data storage space Now, the server only has an 80GB partition for data storage at the moment. That is split into 7 10GB files and one 4GB. The 4GB is 95% full but the others are around 30 - 40% full. Storage pool info -- STORAGE DISK 76,480.0 41.7 41.7 90 70 X:\SERVER1\SP1 STORAGE DISK10,240.0 34.2 On-Line X:\SERVER1\SP2 STORAGE DISK10,240.0 41.0 On-Line X:\SERVER1\SP3 STORAGE DISK10,240.0 37.8 On-Line X:\SERVER1\SP4 STORAGE DISK10,240.0 34.0 On-Line X:\SERVER1\SP5 STORAGE DISK10,240.0 31.4 On-Line X:\SERVER1\SP6 STORAGE DISK10,240.0 39.0 On-Line X:\SERVER1\SP7 STORAGE DISK10,240.0 49.1 On-Line X:\SERVER1\SP8 STORAGE DISK 4,800.0 96.4 On-Line Why would I get this error if there is more than enough room for a backup? I'm new to TSM administration so maybe I'm missing something. sim And keep in mind it could be something REALLY stupid that I just forgot about.

Does anyone know if there is a manual or redbook about upgrading from TSM V4.1 to V4.2? Are there any horror stories or is it pretty much cut and dry?
ANR8376I Message
When I do a Query Mount command I get two ANR8376I messages about mount points reserved in device class: status: RESERVED. We are running TSM version 4.2.1.7 and using a 3494 that we are sharing between two TSM servers. I was curious if somebody knows what that message means. We have 6 3590 tape drives and in spite of getting that message on one of the TSM servers I can still use all 6 tape drives on the other TSM server, so how can two tape drives be reserved on the other TSM server? Hi Gisbert, you're right, things seem to have changed since my last contact with the Connect Agent for Lotus Notes... With TDP Oracle I remember there's a tool called tdposync to synchronize backups between rman (oracle) and the TSM server. In order to find a list of tapes to remove from my LTO every morning, and update their DRM status, I use a script. Here is the relevant code. The actual script is much longer and does several things. My script will creates another KSH script. Code: CHECKOUT=/tmp/update_checkout_status.`date +%d%b%Y` OUTPUT_FILE=/tmp/tapes_to_remove.`date +%d%b%Y` dsmadmc -id=query -password=query q actlog begint=08:00 endt=08:40 | grep -i "from slot" | sed "s/ / /g" | sed "s/ / /g" | sort -t" " +9 -n >$OUTPUT_FILE cat $OUTPUT_FILE | sed "s/^/echo /" >>$CHECKOUT.1 cat $OUTPUT_FILE | cut -f 7 -d " " | sort | sed "s/^/dsmadmc -id=\$ID -password=\$PASSWORD move drmedia /" >$CHECKOUT.2 cat $CHECKOUT.2 | sed "s/$/ tostate=vault | grep -i return/" >$CHECKOUT.3 cat $CHECKOUT.1 $CHECKOUT.3 > $CHECKOUT The idea is to parse the actlog. From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Brenda Collins > Does anyone have any tips on how they migrated their archived or > 'long term > retention' backup data from other backup applications? We have multiple > years worth of data and on various tape formats. Your only real choice is to restore data from other applications (to original machines if possible), and then have TSM backup the data. If you can't restore data to their original homes, you would have to restore them to staging servers and then backup/archive the data with TSM. There's no market for any kind of 'converter' from one backup app's output to another app's format; it would be a one-shot deal, and nigh-on impossible in the case of an app that uses a database to track file locations (like TSM). This operation is complex enough that you might consider outsourcing the work to someone who knows what they're doing and has the equipment to do it; data conversion of this sort, done by those less capable, would be a nightmare to unravel later. -- Mark Stapleton ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) Certified TSM consultant Certified AIX system engineer MCSE

Re: Unable to establish TCP connection
The only way I know to do it is start over. In my shop its usually caused by the LAN group changing switches and such without telling me. First check to see if you can ping IP addresses from the host out to the client and the client to the host. Also, check if your cards are ok at the clients as well as the host. If the above checks out the client probably loss the password and you will need to reestablish it. That would be my suggestions. Have you done any upgrades lately of AIX or other? Philip A. Re: Domino TDP leaves old databases
Hi Holger, with TDP for Lotus Domino every database is treated as if it was one filespace. On your TSM Server you can see this using "q files ". Like with the ba-client TSM updates the filespace when you perform an incremental backup and otherwise leaves the filespace as it is. So when you stop backing up a certain filespace (=domino database), this filespaces active files (documents) will stay unchanged in TSM forever. When you want to discontinue backing up a database and you don't want to keep this db in TSM, just delete it using "delete files " in the admin interface (dsmadmc). Re: Antwort: odbc ?
The ODBC driver is a completely separate entity from the rest of the backup-archive client. It has no dependencies on the b-a client, and the b-a client has no dependencies on the ODBC driver. Therefore, in order to help reduce the already substantial size of the client package, the ODBC driver was packaged separately. (Note: the ODBC driver used to be around 14 MB in size, but starting with version 5.1, we stopped shipping the English version of the MDAC. This significantly reduced the size of the ODBC driver package to around 5 MB. But for now, it is still a separate package.) As far as the API goes, it is always installed with the b-a client since certain b-a components rely on the API (such as the DSMCUTIL utility). The API SDK (not to be confused with the API) is included in the client package, but its size is negligible. Yes, it is all working ok now. One gotcha we found was that our NT guy set up the option file for the local drive clients with clusterno This was a mistake as you dont want the option there at all on the local clients. Re: Client Archive Weekly/Monthly/Quarterly/Yearly
It is very interesting watching all of the comments on this very emotive topic. The answer to the question 'are you taking monthly backups?' is always 'Yes - of course I am'. Monthly backup is a logical thing, not a physical thing - does the user need to know the difference? You could even follow up with 'In fact we take full backups for every day' - but this may be too much information and again lead to long explanations. The question from the user stems from lack of trust that you are able to deliver his data in the event of a problem, so in his case a little knowledge is a dangerous thing! (must have monthly backups!) . This is not resolved overnight but as long as your procedures enable full and timely recovery to any threat to data integrity and availability then you will cover yourself more than by just producing the mandatory monthly. This has everything to do with ensuring best practice is implemented. What the customer wants to hear is 'Yes your data is protected and your SLAs for data recovery will be met.' If an SLA is not in place, then this is the way to proceed and a good way to establish trust. Try it - you do not need to explain progressive incremental or anything like that, how the job is done is your business, if it isn't, then why is a professional team employed to do 'backups' - elevate the discussion to the business level and have the processes in place to back it up, i.e be able to recover the data no matter what happens in accordance with agreed SLAs. This is much better investment of $s than in useless Weekly/Monthly/Quarterly/Yearly cyclic processing. First, when the ordure hits the rotating air movement device, the dumbass application manager says archly "You *are* taking monthly backups aren't you?" It doesn't matter how many times you explain, and it doesn't matter if the particular file that you want isn't on the monthly backup tape, if you don't have that tape, you are percieved as negligent. Second, tape cycles are easy to understand, other network backup products automate that simple process. They ask "why can't this whizz bang product do something that simple?" The problem is that they don't see the benefits of incremental backup. They don't see a 15 minute backup window as useful. For databases, you are reveting to a full backup every night anyway. Third, you say . >Now, the issue of affordability eventually kicks in. That is where you have >to decide how think the pad is you where on your butt. Is it 1, 2, 3, etc. >copies. TSM can do that, but there is a price. But, as you say there is no >"limitation" with TSM. You can do it. It is just not tape retention, it is >object retention. . That may be so in commerce, but in government, the main objective is to not get your butt kicked. In one sense money has nothing to do with it, once the expenditure has been approved. So the padding is very thick.
