Re: Stability of TSM
5.1.6.0 is new and has one serious known problem. 5.1.5.4 was suggested by support a few weeks ago as being pretty good. 4.2.3.2 is the recommended intermediate upgrade path before going to 5.1.5.4 especially if you have windows system objects which were introduced in some level of 4.2.2.x with lots of bugs that really are not completely fixed until 4.2.3.2 and supposedly 5.1.5.2. Coming from 4.1.2, you should probably put on 4.2.3.2, then jump to 5.1.5.4 or higher, but not 5.1.6 until the one nasty problem is fixed. Paul D. Keith, we worked with Tivoli to fix this problem. There was a memory leak in the ACL processing routine. The latest TSM Client for SGI fixed this problem and a previous patch level has the fix. I believe the current level is 4.2.3.0. ftp://service.boulder.ibm.com/storage/tivoli-storage-management/maintenance/ client/v4r2/SGI/v423/ Paul D. Re: Problems with Windows Cluster.
What exactly about TSM is taking so long? Is it the amount of time it takes to move the data? Is it the amount of time it takes to traverse the file system? Is it the amount of time it takes to query the TSM server for existing inventory, before it actually starts looking for changed files? If you do a QUERY SESSION on the server while the backup is running, what do you see? Run QUERY SESSION periodically (say, once every 5 minutes) for an hour or so... is there a pattern? That is, do you see length mount wait times, receive wait, send wait, or run? You might first verify that the problem is not in how long it takes to move data. Try doing a selective backup of a single large file (say, 200 MB). Does the file seem to back up in a reasonable time frame? If not, then you need to look at performance (disk I/O on the client, network performance, TSM server performance, etc.). If the file backs up reasonably fast, then maybe it's just the size (in terms of number of files) of your file system. This can incur lots of wait time in a couple of key places: (1) while the client queries the server for the current backup inventory, and (2) while the client traverses the file system. If it looks like the number of files on the file system is the issue, then if relatively few files change on a daily basis (so TSM spends most of its time traversing the file system but not backing up many files), consider implementing the TSM journal backup service. If the number of files on the file system is the issue but lots of files change daily, then you might consider doing "incremental-by-date" backups on a daily basis, and full incrementals on a weekly (or other periodic) basis. If you are unfamiliar with incremental by date concept, please refer to the client manual which discusses this. The above is not meant to be a definitive list of all available options; others on the list with more practical experience than I may offer some good advice. There may be some additional performance tuning you can do with your network, client and server operating systems, and client and server options files. The TSM is taking a long time to do the backup. it4s a long time processing the files locally (I look for problems in CPU utilization, Processor utilization, and so on...). there is lots of files locally (aproximately 1.000.000 files, it4s a file server). the network traffic rate is ok (between 6 and 15 MB)...the Machine is a Intel with 2 GB RAM, 180 GB HD, 4 GB virtual memory. I have tried a script (or several scripts), describing the list of files...I tried several schedules (with several scripts)...and the time so, so..long - aproximately 40 hours...I put in dsm.opt the resourceutilization for 6 (trying open several sessions to backup go on...). I don4t know anymore... Please, anyone can help me ?? hugs Jorge Martins Service IT Solutions www.service.com.br - RS/Brazil Icon - Internet gratis, MP3, Vmdeo, radio, e-mail e informagco. Re: Gigabit Ether Channel
>>Please hazard a guess on this one: If the adapter doesn't and the channel doesn't form, does that mean the ip address won't be pingable at all? Thanks again for your help - it's much appreciated. Jeff In my experience, if the channel does not form, the switch has no way of knowing these 2 (or more) ports go to the same node. Therefore, it will treat them as two (or more) separate nodes since it will see two different MAC addresses: one on each port. The IP address assigned to each NIC should then be ping-able (asuming all routing/VLANs and such working properly) as it would as if you were not trying to channel and just had a node with 2 NICs. The only way I can think of this NOT happening, is if: (a) mis-config of NIC(s) on node e.g. no IP assigned, administratively downed (b) the switch is set to FORCE a channel (done with "CHANNEL-GROUP x MODE ON" or some variation of depending on switch model...). In this case, the switch will be expecting a channel to form, if one does not, connectivity may not be established. This can be used to form a channel if the NIC(s) do NOT suppport PAgP, or have weak support of, but are still capable of EtherChannel since no PAgP frames are sent in the "ON" mode. We had case (b) happen on some Intel NICs we had once. They supported EtherChannel, but for some reason PAgP did not work. When we set the channel to "ON" (forced) and it worked. This might be the case with ours. Hope that helps some! Chris

Re: Calculate 1 MB in TSM
Richard, A year or two ago, the IEEE proposed a new set of units to handle the 1000 / 1024 issue. It went like this: 1000 = kilo 1024 = kibi 100 = mega 1024^2 = mebi and so forth. The idea was to use the same two first letters as the 10s unit, but append "bi" to indicate "binary" units. So the gigabyte equivalent would be gibibytes. I don't think its adoption has been very widespread. ;-) Tab Trepagnier TSM Administrator Laitram LLC Richard Sims <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent by: "ADSM: Dist Stor Manager" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 01/10/2003 11:05 AM Please respond to "ADSM: Dist Stor Manager" To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] cc: Subject:Re: Calculate 1 MB in TSM >can anyone tell me how TSM calculate 1MB? Re: faulty media
I had a problem with write and read errors on tapes, mostly when information was copied between them. I was working as a consultant for a customer, and I checked the server. It was a Compaq-server running Win2000. It had only a Compaq SmartArray Controller which handled the internal raided disks, the two external SDLT-tape stations and the library controller. We bought an Adaptec 29160 for control of the library and the tape drives. That fixed everything. No more tape read or write errors. /Leif - Original Message - From: "Peter Ford" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Friday, January 10, 2003 6:31 PM Subject: Re: faulty media > -Original Message- > From: Sal Mangiapane [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: Thursday, January 09, 2003 6:32 PM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: Re: faulty media > > > Have you considered where you store the tapes? Hmm, we've seen a somewhat similar message on some of our Solaris hosts from time to time: 01/09/03 15:08:12 dlopen() of /opt/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin/plugins/libPiIMG.so failed. 01/09/03 15:08:12 ld.so.1: dsmc: fatal: libApiDS.so: open failed: No such file or directory. OK, it's really not all that related other than it's a lib problem. :-) It seems to be non-fatal but annoying, and an uninstall and reinstall of the TSM software usually clears it up. Re: Is there a limit on the amount of data an NT client can backup ?
When I say I know of "no known limitations that will cause a hang", what I mean is that I know of no specific (or even general) number of files that would result in a hang. That doesn't mean TSM couldn't run into other problems -- a memory shortage, for example. But then, I would normally expect to see some kind of error message followed by an abort of the operation or a crash; not just a hang. I stand by my original advice on this topic: You should contact IBM support (assuming that you are running a supported environment) so they can help you find the root cause of your problem. Once you know what the real problem is, then you can evaluate what remedies are available. If it were me, that is what I would do. Re: windows 2000 archive
TSM does not archive any "System Object" data (including the registry). So you could use MS Backup to Backup System State to local disk, then use TSM to archive this. To recover, retrieve the data with TSM then do a System State Restore with MS Backup. Re: TSM Disk Pool Management
Mark, Yep. Retention is 30 days. Device type is "Disk", don't use "File" because you have to manage the volumes like tape and that takes extra work. i've never had a problem with fragmentation, i suppose it's possible if you make your disk volumes very small, my disk volumes are 200Gb each and my backuppool Pct Util has run in the high 90's with no problems. Has far as keeping my storage small is where i really have to get creative. First, all clients compress data (don't turn on "compress always" because already compressed files will grow), that way files are stored compressed on the disk pools. Second and most important use global excludes so you don't backup any thing you don't need. One of the biggest saving was not backing up indexes for Groupwise Databases, all groupwise admin's know if they restore a DB they have to reindex, the indexes take up much more space than the DB's themselves. i also exclude temp files and subdirectories, recycle directories, and salvage directories on NetWare Servers. If it wasn't for my creative use of excludes my storage requirements for backups would be much greater. You need to do a lot of work with users, administrators, and dba's to get backups down to the bare minium. Let me know if you have any other questions. John Synovus >>> "Hokanson, Mark" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 01/10/03 10:22AM >>> John, So all of your backup data is on the disk and none ever goes to tape? What is your retention? Archive or Backupset
I have a new client with a requirement to keep monthly point in time copies for 6 months. The question is whether backupsets or archives are the best mechanism. I am at TSM 4.2.2 os390 In my situation I have access to os390 dfhsm which means that I can generate backupsets to disk and then use os390 dfhsm to migrate to tape and also to provide a copy of the tape to protect against media failure. So this means I do not have to archive to achieve media protection. Also backupsets are a very small database overhead and you do not have to retransmit the files over the network. Against this backup sets only work at filespace level, but in this instance only very small amount of data on filespace does not require the 6 month retention. Also individual files are easier to recover from archives, but how often do need to do this? So are backupsets a no brainer here? I am interested in the recommendations of people who use both in a production environment. Thanks John ** The information in this E-Mail is confidential and may be legally privileged. >Is there a chance to reconstruct the data ?? It won't be easy. But you can backup your current data base, restore the data base to an earlier backup that has the archive files. Export the archive files. Restore your current data base from backup. Import the exported archive files.

Examination of the evolutionary context of the client might show that the number of files on it has been steadily increasing, and so the number in TSM storage, and thus an increasingly burdensome inventory obtained from the server during a dsmc Incremental. The amount of available CPU power and memory at the time are principal factors: it may be that the NT system's load has evolved whereas its real memory has not, and needs more. Watching the backup run via the Windows Task Manager or the like can illuminate the problem: in most cases, the client is running, but may seem like it's "hung" because it hasn't found any new files to send in a while. The monitor should show I/O and CPU activity proceeding. In the client log, look for the backup lingering in a particular area of the file system, which can indicate a bad file or disk area, where a chkdsk or the like may uncover a problem. You could also try a comparative INCRBYDate type backup and see if that does better, which would indicate difficulty dealing with the size of the inventory. TSM Journaling may also be an option. The tapes doesn4t exist anymore so I >cannot perform an audit volume but I really want to delete these volumes >from the database. Prevention is the desirable course, to never dispense with a tape until all its references have first been removed. To deal with the current situation: If 'DELete Volume VolName DISCARDdata=Yes' does not work, and 'RESTORE Volume' is not an option either, you might try doing a dsmlabel to create a surrogate volume with the original name and do the 'AUDit Volume' on that - I haven't tried such a thing, but it might be a worthy desperation step. There is also the unsupported deletion of TSM database records, but best not to go there if avoidable. Richard Sims, BU

Re: Journal Based Backup and Legato Networker
Unzip of a whole directory might be very easily overlooked - unzip will restore both attributes (without "archive" bit) and file date. Thus selection based on this criteria will fail. OTOH ADSM/TSM will see a file without a corresponding entry in server DB. Such a file enters in the list of files for backup. The situation may also be triggered if you lost for some reason a tape. "del vol disc=y" will clear entries in DB and on next backup files will be sent to the server (if cannot be restored from copypool). Re: Is there a limit on the amount of data an NT client can backup ?
There are not known limitations on the amount of data to be backed up that would contribute to a hang. Network problems are one fairly common cause of hangs, though I would think you would eventually get some kind of network error. You might consider upgrading to the latest TSM client patch level (5.1.5.7) to see if the problem may have been addressed via a bug fix. Beyond that, if the problem persists, I would recommend that you contact IBM support for assistance. Re: Journal Based Backup and Legato Networker
Some cases I can think of where the archive bit is not a reliable indicator: - If you change the read-only attribute via Windows Explorer/file properties. - If you modify the file, but then the archive bit is turned off either manually or via some other utility. - The archive bit is turned on either manually or via some other utility when the file has not changed. TSM does not use the archive bit to determine whether a file has changed. Please refer to the Windows client manual, chapter 4 "Backing up files and directories", section "Backing up files and directories", subsection "Full and partial incremental backup" for specific information on what factors TSM considers. For Journaled backups, you can refer to the client manual, appendix D "Journal service configuration", section "JournaledFileSystemSettings stanza" for information on what kinds of changes can be monitored by the journal service (you can customize these settings). The journal service uses the Microsoft API function ReadDirectoryChangesW() to monitor file systems for changes. You can find additional information on this at the Microsoft MSDN site, msdn.microsoft.com. Do a search on ReadDirectoryChangesW and you will find the reference information for this function. Experience with library Compaq MSL5026
Hi All, I have a customer who has a quit a few problems with his library/drives (Compaq MSL5026/SDLT drives - single module, 2 drives) and TSM. I cannot isolate a single source of the errors, but we're getting all kinds of I/O errors.(Media errors, read/write errors, changer failures.) There are big problems when doing operations that requires to read from one drive and write to the other (space reclamation, move data). I know this is not very precise, but for starters, I would like to know if any of you out there has had any experience with this library, and if it works fine - what version TSM/TSM Devicedriver, and what firmware are you using for library and drives? The TSM server/driver in this case is v. 4.2.1.7, and library and drives are running under TSM's device driver. Best regards Geirr G. Halvorsen

Re: Is 3575 compatible with #6203 Dual Wide/Ultra-3 SCSI Adapter
No. FC 6203 is Dual LVD adapter and is incompatible with 3575 (which is HVD). Though 6207 *might* work (and I am not even sure does AIX 5.1 have drivers for it), it is not supported for p670. The replacement is FC 6204 which is supported and is available (6207 was "withdrawn from marketing" around 1.5-2 years ago).
