Re: Stability of TSM

2003-01-10 Thread Seay, Paul
5.1.6.0 is new and has one serious known problem.

5.1.5.4 was suggested by support a few weeks ago as being pretty good.
4.2.3.2 is the recommended intermediate upgrade path before going to 5.1.5.4
especially if you have windows system objects which were introduced in some
level of 4.2.2.x with lots of bugs that really are not completely fixed
until 4.2.3.2 and supposedly 5.1.5.2.

Coming from 4.1.2, you should probably put on 4.2.3.2, then jump to 5.1.5.4
or higher, but not 5.1.6 until the one nasty problem is fixed.

Hello Fellow TSMer's,
I have been trying to postpone upgrading my TSM Server for as long as
possible. I'm a firm believer in "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!", but i'm
starting to get funny errors. Anyways, I'm at 4.1.2, and I have been reading
many issues with each 5.X release. I would like to know, from everyone's
experience, what version is the most stable thus far? and can you recommend
a site for upgrade docs. Thanks in advance -kane

2003-01-10 Thread Seay, Paul
Keith, we worked with Tivoli to fix this problem. There was a memory leak
in the ACL processing routine. The latest TSM Client for SGI fixed this
problem and a previous patch level has the fix. I believe the current level
is 4.2.3.0.

Hello IBM,

We have an sgi client with about 3 filesystems of about 500 gig each, and
zillions of files. Can't get them to back up. Same situation, scheduler
drifts away. No error messages.

We are thinking that the scheduler building of the index blows a gasket
somewhere, and that maybe using the virtual filespace option would break it
up into smaller more manageable indexes? Any thoughts?

Re: Problems with Windows Cluster.

2003-01-10 Thread Andrew Raibeck
What exactly about TSM is taking so long? Is it the amount of time it
takes to move the data? Is it the amount of time it takes to traverse the
file system? Is it the amount of time it takes to query the TSM server for
existing inventory, before it actually starts looking for changed files?
If you do a QUERY SESSION on the server while the backup is running, what
do you see? Run QUERY SESSION periodically (say, once every 5 minutes) for
an hour or so... is there a pattern? That is, do you see length mount wait
times, receive wait, send wait, or run?

You might first verify that the problem is not in how long it takes to
move data. Try doing a selective backup of a single large file (say, 200
MB). Does the file seem to back up in a reasonable time frame? If not,
then you need to look at performance (disk I/O on the client, network
performance, TSM server performance, etc.).

If the file backs up reasonably fast, then maybe it's just the size (in
terms of number of files) of your file system. This can incur lots of wait
time in a couple of key places: (1) while the client queries the server
for the current backup inventory, and (2) while the client traverses the
file system.

If it looks like the number of files on the file system is the issue, then
if relatively few files change on a daily basis (so TSM spends most of its
time traversing the file system but not backing up many files), consider
implementing the TSM journal backup service.

If the number of files on the file system is the issue but lots of files
change daily, then you might consider doing "incremental-by-date" backups
on a daily basis, and full incrementals on a weekly (or other periodic)
basis. If you are unfamiliar with incremental by date concept, please
refer to the client manual which discusses this.

The above is not meant to be a definitive list of all available options;
others on the list with more practical experience than I may offer some
good advice. There may be some additional performance tuning you can do
with your network, client and server operating systems, and client and
server options files.

Re: Calculate 1 MB in TSM

2003-01-10 Thread Braich, Raminder
I cannot imagine how people reach 1000 kb or 1000 mb figure. These are
always calculated as 2 ^ x where x=0...infinity. I believe every calculation
in software is done using the power of 2. 1000 could be used by sales as
others suggested but how come they justify 1000 kb is bigger than 1024 kb !

1 byte=8 bits
1 KB = 1024 bits
1 MB = 1024 KB = 1024*1024=1048576 bits
1 GB = 1024 MB =1024*1048576=1073741824 bits

Hello TSM'ers,

can anyone tell me how TSM calculate 1MB? Is it 1000KB or 1024KB.

Thanks in advance.

Problems with Windows Cluster.

2003-01-10 Thread Jorge Martins
Hello folks !!!

I have a problem with a Windows 2000 cluster. The TSM is taking a long time to do the
backup. it4s a long time processing the files locally (I look for problems in CPU
utilization, Processor utilization, and so on...). there is lots of files locally
(aproximately 1.000.000 files, it4s a file server).

the network traffic rate is ok (between 6 and 15 MB)...the Machine is a Intel with 2
GB RAM, 180 GB HD, 4 GB virtual memory.

I have tried a script (or several scripts), describing the list of files...I tried
several schedules (with several scripts)...and the time so, so..long -
aproximately 40 hours...I put in dsm.opt the resourceutilization for 6 (trying open
several sessions to backup go on...).

I don4t know anymore...

Please, anyone can help me ??

hugs

Richard,

I ran a full auditdb two weeks ago to try to fix this problem and nothing
came up ... the auditdb terminated OK, no errors whatsoever.

Is this "audit archdescriptions" included when you perform a auditdb with
no parameters ??

Re: Gigabit Ether Channel

>>Please hazard a guess on this one: If the adapter doesn't and the channel
doesn't form, does that mean the ip address won't be pingable at all? Thanks
again for your help - it's much appreciated. Jeff

In my experience, if the channel does not form, the switch has no way of
knowing these 2 (or more) ports go to the same node. Therefore, it will
treat them as two (or more) separate nodes since it will see two different
MAC addresses: one on each port. The IP address assigned to each NIC should
then be ping-able (asuming all routing/VLANs and such working properly) as
it would as if you were not trying to channel and just had a node with 2
NICs. The only way I can think of this NOT happening, is if:

(a) mis-config of NIC(s) on node e.g. no IP assigned, administratively
downed

(b) the switch is set to FORCE a channel (done with "CHANNEL-GROUP x MODE
ON" or some variation of depending on switch model...). In this case, the
switch will be expecting a channel to form, if one does not, connectivity
may not be established. This can be used to form a channel if the NIC(s) do
NOT suppport PAgP, or have weak support of, but are still capable of
EtherChannel since no PAgP frames are sent in the "ON" mode.

We had case (b) happen on some Intel NICs we had once. They supported
EtherChannel, but for some reason PAgP did not work. When we set the
channel to "ON" (forced) and it worked. This might be the case with ours.
Hope that helps some!

Chris

Jeff,

We use Etherchannel on some of our servers, none of which are TSM servers
(but clients use it) in our case, however. Your NIC's (or drivers more
accurately) MUST support PAgP, for the channel to be automatically formed.
This is a Cisco protocol that handles the negotiation of the channel and
without it, you will be hard pressed to make the channel work! Intel NIC's
support PAgP, and I *think* some 3Com ones do, but other than that, I am
not
sure... Contact me directly if you would like more info.

We're about to test this with a P670 on AIX 5.2 with 4 (supported) Gig

see

that it helps in the automatic creation of fast Ethernet Links".

This is a database error. Do a Q db f=d and a q log f=d. Make sure that you're not

Hi,

I'm doing some performace tuning, and want to do everything *except*
actually send the backups to the server... basically I'm testing how
fast the client is deciding which files to backup, but don't want to
dump tons of data into the system.

Does anyone have any ideas on this - BTW I'm a completely new to TSM so

Thanks

Re: Calculate 1 MB in TSM

2003-01-10 Thread Tab Trepagnier
Richard,

A year or two ago, the IEEE proposed a new set of units to handle the 1000
/ 1024 issue. It went like this:

1000 = kilo
1024 = kibi

100 = mega
1024^2 = mebi

and so forth.

The idea was to use the same two first letters as the 10s unit, but append
"bi" to indicate "binary" units. So the gigabyte equivalent would be
gibibytes.

I don't think its adoption has been very widespread. ;-)

Re: faulty media

2003-01-10 Thread Leif Gustafsson Giga Consulting AB
I had a problem with write and read errors on tapes, mostly when information
was copied between them.
I was working as a consultant for a customer, and I checked the server. It
was a Compaq-server running Win2000. It had only a Compaq SmartArray
Controller which handled the internal raided disks, the two external
SDLT-tape stations and the library controller. We bought an Adaptec 29160
for control of the library and the tape drives. That fixed everything. No
more tape read or write errors.

All the tapes stay online in our library. The library is housed in a data
center (in a very controlled environment).

Just FYI, I started auditing the tapes that showed errors and sure enough,
there have been around 100 files deleted off about 5 volumes (audit vol
XXX fix=yes). The whole tape does not seem to be affected, just certain
files. Could there be something that is causing file corruption when the
data is copied from the client machines? Should we move the data off these
tapes and discard them, just to be sure?

thanks.

Re: Is there a limit on the amount of data an NT client can backup ?

2003-01-10 Thread Andrew Raibeck
When I say I know of "no known limitations that will cause a hang", what I
mean is that I know of no specific (or even general) number of files that
would result in a hang. That doesn't mean TSM couldn't run into other
problems -- a memory shortage, for example. But then, I would normally
expect to see some kind of error message followed by an abort of the
operation or a crash; not just a hang.

I stand by my original advice on this topic: You should contact IBM
support (assuming that you are running a supported environment) so they
can help you find the root cause of your problem. Once you know what the
real problem is, then you can evaluate what remedies are available. If it
were me, that is what I would do.

Hello IBM,

We have an sgi client with about 3 filesystems of about 500 gig each, and
zillions of files. Can't
get them to back up. Same situation, scheduler drifts away. No error
messages.

We are thinking that the scheduler building of the index blows a gasket
somewhere, and that maybe
using the virtual filespace option would break it up into smaller more
manageable indexes? Any
thoughts?

Re: windows 2000 archive

2003-01-10 Thread Rushforth, Tim
TSM does not archive any "System Object" data (including the registry). So
you could use MS Backup to Backup System State to local disk, then use TSM
to archive this.

To recover, retrieve the data with TSM then do a System State Restore with
MS Backup.

We seem to be missing the registry information.

Do archives not back that up? I have looked through manuals and books and

Re: TSM Disk Pool Management

2003-01-10 Thread John Underdown
Mark,

Yep. Retention is 30 days. Device type is "Disk", don't use "File" because you have to
manage the volumes like tape and that takes extra work. i've never had a problem with
fragmentation, i suppose it's possible if you make your disk volumes very small, my
disk volumes are 200Gb each and my backuppool Pct Util has run in the high 90's with
no problems.

Has far as keeping my storage small is where i really have to get creative. First, all
clients compress data (don't turn on "compress always" because already compressed
files will grow), that way files are stored compressed on the disk pools. Second and
most important use global excludes so you don't backup any thing you don't need. One
of the biggest saving was not backing up indexes for Groupwise Databases, all
groupwise admin's know if they restore a DB they have to reindex, the indexes take up
much more space than the DB's themselves. i also exclude temp files and
subdirectories, recycle directories, and salvage directories on NetWare Servers. If it
wasn't for my creative use of excludes my storage requirements for backups would be
much greater. You need to do a lot of work with users, administrators, and dba's to
get backups down to the bare minium.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

John,

So all of your backup data is on the disk and none ever goes to tape? What is your
retention? Are you device type file? How do you handle storage pool fragmentation?
With 377 servers at 100gB nightly it seems you would fill your 4TB with about 40 day
retention, correct?

Thanks a lot for your help,

Mark,

We been using a all disk backuppool for a number of years now. It's grown to 4TB, we
just keep adding disk expansion to the server as we need more storage (We are now
looking at the new ATA Raid Expansion Cabinets 3TB for $10,000). We backup 377
servers (80 to 100 GB total) nightly and growing. The TSM database is 15GB sitting on
raid 10 with 15K rpm drives (very fast) , i also defrag the DB monthly. This is a
dream setup and works very well, restores run in the blink of a eye. I run the TSM
server by myself as a part-time duty. The only problem you'll have is figuring out
what to do with all your free time.

The is a common topic on the list, search the achives at www.adsm.org. Let me know if

windows 2000 archive

2003-01-10 Thread Davidson, Becky
I did an archive on a Windows 2000 system using tsm client 5.1.5
We then uninstalled the software that had been running as part of a disaster
recovery test
I then did a retrieve of everything I archived.
We seem to be missing the registry information.

Do archives not back that up? I have looked through manuals and books and
can't find anything that says it does and can't find anything that says it
doesn't. Anyone?

Archive or Backupset

2003-01-10 Thread John Naylor
I have a new client with a requirement to keep monthly point in time copies for
6 months.
The question is whether backupsets or archives are the best mechanism.
I am at TSM 4.2.2 os390
In my situation I have access to os390 dfhsm which means that I can generate
backupsets to disk
and then use os390 dfhsm to migrate to tape and also to provide a copy of the
tape to protect against media failure. So this means I do not have to archive
to achieve media protection.
Also backupsets are a very small database overhead and you do not have to
retransmit the files over the network.
Against this backup sets only work at filespace level, but in this instance only
very small amount of data on filespace does not require the 6 month retention.
Also individual files are easier to recover from archives, but how often do need
to do this?
So are backupsets a no brainer here?
I am interested in the recommendations of people who use both in a production
environment.
Thanks
John

2003-01-10 Thread Keith Kwiatek
Hello IBM,

We have an sgi client with about 3 filesystems of about 500 gig each, and zillions of
files. Can't
get them to back up. Same situation, scheduler drifts away. No error messages.

We are thinking that the scheduler building of the index blows a gasket somewhere, and
that maybe
using the virtual filespace option would break it up into smaller more manageable
indexes? Any
thoughts?

Re: TSM Disk Pool Management

2003-01-10 Thread John Underdown

Let me know if
you have any questions.

We are considering creating an extremely large TSM disk storage pool
(IE: 1-10TB). The goal being to eliminate going to tape. Does anyone
have any really BIG disk pools? Are there tools available for managing
large TSM disk pools over time. (IE: Reclamation, Aging Data, etc) The
documentation from Tivoli suggests that we need to set it up as a device
type=FILE. What are the drawbacks using this approach? Is performance
dramatically impacted? etc...

Examination of the evolutionary context of the client might show that the number
of files on it has been steadily increasing, and so the number in TSM storage,
and thus an increasingly burdensome inventory obtained from the server during a
dsmc Incremental. The amount of available CPU power and memory at the time are
principal factors: it may be that the NT system's load has evolved whereas its
real memory has not, and needs more. Watching the backup run via the Windows
Task Manager or the like can illuminate the problem: in most cases, the client
is running, but may seem like it's "hung" because it hasn't found any new files
to send in a while. The monitor should show I/O and CPU activity proceeding.
In the client log, look for the backup lingering in a particular area of the
file system, which can indicate a bad file or disk area, where a chkdsk or the
like may uncover a problem. You could also try a comparative INCRBYDate type
backup and see if that does better, which would indicate difficulty dealing with
the size of the inventory. TSM Journaling may also be an option.

Prevention is the desirable course, to never dispense with a tape until
all its references have first been removed.
To deal with the current situation: If 'DELete Volume VolName DISCARDdata=Yes'
does not work, and 'RESTORE Volume' is not an option either, you might try
doing a dsmlabel to create a surrogate volume with the original name and do
the 'AUDit Volume' on that - I haven't tried such a thing, but it might be
a worthy desperation step. There is also the unsupported deletion of TSM
database records, but best not to go there if avoidable.

Re: Journal Based Backup and Legato Networker

2003-01-10 Thread Zlatko Krastev/ACIT
Unzip of a whole directory might be very easily overlooked - unzip will
restore both attributes (without "archive" bit) and file date. Thus
selection based on this criteria will fail. OTOH ADSM/TSM will see a file
without a corresponding entry in server DB. Such a file enters in the list
of files for backup.
The situation may also be triggered if you lost for some reason a tape.
"del vol disc=y" will clear entries in DB and on next backup files
will be sent to the server (if cannot be restored from copypool).

Hi *SM-ers,

could one of the knowing (ex)-Networker users help me in interpreting the
following sentence
in the "Legato NetWorker, Release 6.2, Microsoft Windows Version
Administrator's Guide",
page 593:

"When using the Change Journal, the NetWorker software can detect more
types of changes and can save more changed files than is possible when not
using the Change Journal."

Networker uses the MS Windows 2000/XP builtin Journal.
So does this mean that a "normal" incremental backup doesn't get all
changes?
As I understand Networker uses the archive flag and the last modified
date.

What kind of changes could go unidentified?

Is my understanding correct that TSM always gets all changes (incremental

journal based
backup)?

2003-01-10 Thread Andrew Raibeck
There are not known limitations on the amount of data to be backed up that
would contribute to a hang. Network problems are one fairly common cause
of hangs, though I would think you would eventually get some kind of
network error. You might consider upgrading to the latest TSM client patch
level (5.1.5.7) to see if the problem may have been addressed via a bug
fix. Beyond that, if the problem persists, I would recommend that you
contact IBM support for assistance.

Hello all,

we have a TSM client installed on an NT server that has about 250gb of IBM
ESS
storage attached to it.
Recently we have experienced problems with the scheduler service which
appears
to hang during the backup.
The client schedule and error logs do not contain any information.

The TSM server is V5.1.1.0
The TSM client level is V5.1.1.0

The NT server is V4 SP6.
The NT server also runs Notes V5.

Has anybody seen similar problems when backing up such a large volume of
data ?
Any help is appreciated.

regards,

Nick Rutherford.

Re: Journal Based Backup and Legato Networker

2003-01-10 Thread Andrew Raibeck
Some cases I can think of where the archive bit is not a reliable
indicator:

- If you change the read-only attribute via Windows Explorer/file
properties.

- If you modify the file, but then the archive bit is turned off either
manually or via some other utility.

- The archive bit is turned on either manually or via some other utility
when the file has not changed.

TSM does not use the archive bit to determine whether a file has changed.
Please refer to the Windows client manual, chapter 4 "Backing up files and
directories", section "Backing up files and directories", subsection "Full
and partial incremental backup" for specific information on what factors
TSM considers.

For Journaled backups, you can refer to the client manual, appendix D
"Journal service configuration", section "JournaledFileSystemSettings
stanza" for information on what kinds of changes can be monitored by the
journal service (you can customize these settings). The journal service
uses the Microsoft API function ReadDirectoryChangesW() to monitor file
systems for changes. You can find additional information on this at the
Microsoft MSDN site, msdn.microsoft.com. Do a search on
ReadDirectoryChangesW and you will find the reference information for this
function.

Subject:Journal Based Backup and Legato Networker

Hi *SM-ers,

could one of the knowing (ex)-Networker users help me in interpreting the
following sentence
in the "Legato NetWorker, Release 6.2, Microsoft Windows Version
Administrator's Guide",
page 593:

"When using the Change Journal, the NetWorker software can detect more
types of changes and can save more changed files than is possible when not
using the Change Journal."

Networker uses the MS Windows 2000/XP builtin Journal.
So does this mean that a "normal" incremental backup doesn't get all
changes?
As I understand Networker uses the archive flag and the last modified
date.

What kind of changes could go unidentified?

Is my understanding correct that TSM always gets all changes (incremental
or
journal based
backup)?

Kind regards

Experience with library Compaq MSL5026

2003-01-10 Thread Halvorsen Geirr Gulbrand
Hi All,
I have a customer who has a quit a few problems with his library/drives
(Compaq MSL5026/SDLT drives - single module, 2 drives) and TSM.
I cannot isolate a single source of the errors, but we're getting all kinds
of I/O errors.(Media errors, read/write errors, changer failures.)
There are big problems when doing operations that requires to read from one
drive and write to the other (space reclamation, move data).

I know this is not very precise, but for starters, I would like to know if
any of you out there has had any experience with this library, and if it
works fine - what version TSM/TSM Devicedriver, and what firmware are you
using for library and drives?

The TSM server/driver in this case is v. 4.2.1.7, and library and drives are
running under TSM's device driver.

Best regards
Geirr G. Halvorsen

Is there a limit on the amount of data an NT client can backup ?

2003-01-10 Thread Nick Rutherford
Hello all,

we have a TSM client installed on an NT server that has about 250gb of IBM ESS

Recently we have experienced problems with the scheduler service which appears
to hang during the backup.
The client schedule and error logs do not contain any information.

The TSM server is V5.1.1.0
The TSM client level is V5.1.1.0

The NT server is V4 SP6.
The NT server also runs Notes V5.

Has anybody seen similar problems when backing up such a large volume of data ?

Hi all,

I would like to save time of all of you in case of upgrading LTO 3583
firmware to 2_80_0041 level. I did it two days ago from 2_72_0012 and with
unpleasant surprise. Tape labels readed from barcodes are with default
settings in 2_80_0041 WITHOUT trailing "L1" characters. When I restarted
TSM
server and performed first AUDIT LIBRARY, whole tapes gone out and new
checked labels were 6 characters long and unknown for TSM (using tapes).

There is new item in library menu: MORE - SETUP - LIBRARY - MEDIA, which
has
default value NORMAL (providing 6 characters label) and must be set to
EXTENDED for full label providing. Very unlucky default setting, it
counted
three hours of my life at cunstomer with rising hair on my head, when I
had
no "known" volumes in library.

Subject: DELETE FILESPACE Question

Hi all,
Yesterday I deleted a filespace of a node with the Option TYPE=ALL -
afterwards
I remarked that the customer only wanted his Backups to be deleted. So
all
  his important Archives had gone.
Because of the fact, that there was one night of backups between the DELETE
FILESPACE Command and the time I remarked this, i cannot restore the
  database..
I know the tapes, where the data was stored on and I didn't reclaim the
tapes
until now. (so the Reclamation Percentage is very high now on that
tape -
I set the Reclamation threshold to 100%)
Is there a chance to reconstruct the data ??

Re: Is 3575 compatible with #6203 Dual Wide/Ultra-3 SCSI Adapter

2003-01-10 Thread Zlatko Krastev/ACIT
No. FC 6203 is Dual LVD adapter and is incompatible with 3575 (which is
HVD). Though 6207 *might* work (and I am not even sure does AIX 5.1 have
drivers for it), it is not supported for p670. The replacement is FC 6204
which is supported and is available (6207 was "withdrawn from marketing"
around 1.5-2 years ago).
Most probably your management will not like the idea for saving on that
SCSI adapter to allow unsupported expensive server but who knows.

Subject:Is 3575 compatible with #6203 Dual Wide/Ultra-3 SCSI Adapter

Hi all,

I'm moving my TSM server from an F50 to a P670. The problem is that the
SCSI adapters (Feature #6203 - Dual Wide/Ultra-3 SCSI I/O Controller) in
the P670 appear to incompatible with my IBM 3575-L32 tape library. Has
anyone had this problem and if so what did you do?

Also, would the SCSI adapters (Feature #6207 - Ultra SCSI Differential PCI
adapter) in my F50 be compatible with my P670?

Thanks,
Rick
