Re: 32 bit TSM Client for for AIX5.1
If you need a 32 bit API as well you have to go back and use the AIX4.3.3 client. We are using TSM client 4.2.2.1 for AIX4.3.3 on several of our AIX5.1 servers because we needed the 32bit API. If you can use the 32bit client with a 64bit API then you can use one of the AIX5.1 clients. - Kai. > -Original Message- > From: Rajesh Oak [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: Wednesday, 08 January 2003 9:37 AM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: 32 bit TSM Client for for AIX5.1 > > > -- Information from the mail header > --- > Sender: "ADSM: Dist Stor Manager" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Poster: Rajesh Oak <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Organization: Lycos Mail (http://www.mail.lycos.com:80) > Subject: 32 bit TSM Client for for AIX5.1 > -- > - > > Is there a 32 bit TSM Client for AIX5.1 OS.? > > > Rajesh Oak > > > _ > Get 25MB, POP3, Spam Filtering with LYCOS MAIL PLUS for $19.95/year. > http://login.mail.lycos.com/brandPage.shtml?pageId=plus&ref=lmtplus >

How many tapes do you have in the tapepool? Select count(*) from volumes where stgpool_name='TAPEPOOL' How many drives do you have? How many mounts are you getting during a stgpool backup? Do you have maxpr specified on the stgpool backup? What is the device class mount retention? Are you using a maximum scratch number for tapepool or are you using private volumes? Send a: q stg tapepool f=d q devclass [device class] f=d q stg copypool f=d Also, run this select to see if you have a lot of private volumes in the library but not owned by any storage pool. This happens when a tape is not labeled. select volume_name from libvolumes where status='Private' and libvolumes.volume_name not in (select volume_name from volumes) and libvolumes.volume_name not in (select volume_name from volhistory where type in ('BACKUPFULL', 'BACKUPINCR', 'DBSNAPSHOT', 'EXPORT')) With this information I may be able to help show that the collocation is maybe not the total culprit. Re: To Collate or Not to Collate?
The following reasons could be why ur tape pool is running too long: 1.) Tape or drive errors so the timeout is being reached, you may want to lower your tape timeout paramter and check to actlog for media read errors. 2.) Check the actlog for: "volume XXX needed for backup storage pool process and check the library for those tapes to make sure there in the library with the AIX command: # mtlib -l/dev/lmcp0 -qI | grep -i tape_number 3.) If the backup storagepool process hasn't ran in a while then it could be trying to catch up, if that's the case just LET IT RUN. Becareful do not let MIGRATION RUN during it never. 4.) Are backups running during the backup storage pool process? 5.) Ha something changed in your client environment, maybe there just alot more data to backup in your client environment now. Maybe an entire EMC symmetrix, was added, or another database instance was created or something of that nature. 6.) Are you archiving now when you were just backing up before. 7.) Have the backups been running selective rather then incrementally, this causes it to run an unecessary amount of time, since it's a FULL dump essentially. 8.) Is space reclamation running at the same time, maybe the tape drives are simply not available at that time. View your admin schedule if you have them setup that way with the following command and see if any admin schedule could interfere with the backup storage pool process. Ideally only the backup storage pool process should be running at any one given time: tsm> q schedule t=a As far as your scratch tape problem goes, are you collocating offsite tape copy pools (NO NO) or just primary tape primary pools? 1.) Reclaimation is a good way to get tapes back. 2.) Also you can use the move media command to move data around as well. 3.) Also look at tapes which are offsite like with a "select" statement to find which tapes have less then like 10% utilization if you get like 40 tapes back which are offsite and which match that query simply delete those tapes and recall them. Then the next time backup storage pool runs it will recreate them. Re: label/checkin libvolume
You can do a "checkout libvol libname volser remove=no" then go back to the "label libvol" command with the "checkin=scratch" parameter. Nick Cassimatis Today is the tomorrow of yesterday.
Re: label/checkin libvolume
Can't you just do a checkout with remove=no and then label the tapes? I did try deleting them, but they are not part of a storage pool, so they cannot be "deleted" (and there is no "delete libvolume" command). I updated a couple of the volumes to scratch, just as a test. After updating them, I tried: "label libvol search=yes checkl=barcode checkin=scr overwrite=yes volrange=,". However, TSM reports 0 volumes labelled and exits with "Success". The only other thing I can think to do is to go to the library and physically remove them. Once removed, audit the library to show TSM that they are no longer in the library. Then, load them back in and check them in correctly. Any other ideas? Thanks. Peter
Re: label/checkin libvolume
Your removing and doing audit is quickest and probably best way. Then put them in the Bulk i/o as originally and use label libvol with "checkin=scratch". That will do it. My aging notes on this indicate that the client uses Ziv Lempel (LZI) and the 3590 uses a Ziv-Lempel technique called IBMLZ1 - which would seem to be the same thing, as Dwight says. Of course, this is all subject to change at any time without anyone having to tell us. Naturally, expect different drive makers to utilize differing algorithms. YMMV. Richard Sims, BU

I recall being told or reading (a long time ago) that the algorithm used by 3590 tape drives is the same as used by the adsm/tsm client. Either at the client or at the drive, it is just running data through a program... but this would tend to support different possibilities based on what piece of hardware and how that manufacture/engineer designed things. Re: Restore performance W2K file-server
Doesn't the TSM Win client also support image backups for WIn2K now? We also have seen that the problem on RESTORES is the speed at which NTFS can create files. (Consider how long it would take you to drag&drop 800GB of files can't be any faster than that with TSM.) If you do an image backup periodically, and incrementals daily, then when you have to restore you restore the image, then just do point-in-time incrementals. Should make the restore MUCH faster for a very large full disk. But that's just theory, I haven't gotten around to trying it myself yet... -Original Message- From: Hokanson, Mark [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, January 13, 2003 3:30 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Restore performance W2K file-server We purchased a NetAppliance filer and consolidated all of our File servers to it. Re: label/checkin libvolume
Well, TSM doesn't want to label them while they are PRIVATE and TSM doesn't really know what is going on... You might be able to do a del vol against them to get them back to scratch, then do your label libvol I believe you can use the volrange if you specify search=yes BUT I'd make sure and use overwrite=no to be safe. You might be able to get your label libvol command to run even with them as private if you used overwrite=yes but I never like using that especially if I specify a volrange... creates room for errors and your vols would still be in a private status. Since you have 220 tapes you need to correct... if you have excel & a unix box with vi do this... in excel, in 1,A stick your initial volser (like AAA001) then do the little expand down the column and let excel fill you will notice that excel will increment the numbers :-) now cut that out of the excel spread sheet and over in a unix window, vi a file, call it MYMACRO then go into insert mode and paste all your volsers. Now go into cursor movement mode and do a :g/^/s//del vol / that will stick del vol at the front of all your volsers, now save that and call it as a macro from an admin session. takes less than a minute... Other helpful VI edit commands if you have a list of volsers already in a file and you wish to do something like build checkin commands... :g/^/s//checkin libvol mylibrname / followed by :g/$/s// checklabel=no status=scratch dev=mydevtype/ and now you just wq the file and call it from an admin session... you can do checkouts the same way... hope this helps. I tried to run "label libvol ..." this morning when I discovered the issue, but it didn't work due to the fact they are already in the library. My question is, how do I retroactively label these volumes? Is there some command that I could issue to update them all at one (ie: volrange=XXX,XXX)? Thanks in advance! Restore performance W2K file-server
Hello, TSM server 4.2.2.8 and AIX 5.1, client Windows 2000 Server SP3 and TSM client 5.1, long directorypaths, a lot of (little) files, about 800 GB. I was wondering how other sites are handling big W2K file servers in case of a full-restore. Client 5.1 can use multiple restore sessions, so that's a pro. Maybe a seperate DIRMC to restore directories first and then files, or something like that? Parameters in the dsm.opt? Everything is welcome. Thanks, Brian. _ Ontvang je Hotmail & Messenger berichten op je mobiele telefoon met Hotmail SMS http://www.msn.nl/jumppage/

Re: OSX Mac Client Question
Yes, IBM does have a ways to go with the Tivoli Storage Manager client for Mac OS X. It does work, and the last couple updates have taken care of very critical problems. The major problem that remains is that the Scheduler (which is the agent that communicates with the server and facilitates scheduled backups) is an interactive application and cannot run in the background. This means that you have to be logged in at the console as an admin user in order for the Scheduler to work. If this is the type of machine where there's only one or two admins, and you're comfortable using something like a screensaver password to protect the console, then TSM can work quite well. The reason for this issue is that IBM essentially carbonized the old Mac OS version, keeping the single user paradigm. The client is being completely rewritten by IBM, and a version that has a scheduler capable of running as a background process will be available this year. Jim Sporer At 04:00 PM 1/13/2003 +, you wrote: Hi TSMers I've just installed the latest client release for a Mac OSX machine. I can run backups/restores no problem and can run the scheduler manually. I would expect to see something like 'Schedule will be refreshed in 1 hour'. Anyone out there have experience with the OSX clients? Thanks Farren Minns - John Wiley & Sons Ltd
shark,tsm,oracle ...
Before stating my question, I will briefly, describe our environment. We have a shark, few oracle servers and a AIX TSM server which connects to a robotic 3494 library with four 3590E tape drives. We would like to backup our oracle databases using rman, tsm, Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle software and do lanfree backups. Has anyone done this type configuration? I am concern with how luns get assigned and deassigned and the management of volumes groups on the target luns. Anyway, I would like to know if someone has implemented this and how reliable and difficult it is to install and maintain. Thanks, * CARLOS E. SILESKY JIMENEZ EMAIL: [EMAIL PROTECTED] <---> *
TDP for Oracle, tdpoconf, cannot change password ??
OK, this must be simple, but we can't figure it out. We have TDP for Oracle NT 2.2 on a WIN2K client. . We have been backing up successfully with it for a long time to an AIX TSM server. NOW we want to MOVE this client to a new Windows TSM server we are implementing. We have changed the TDP dsm.opt file to point to the new TSM server. But when we run tdpoconf to reset the password on the client to the NEW TSM server, tdpoconf returns "ANS1025E (RC137) session rejected: Authentication failure". The connection is made to the NEW TSM server, and enough information gets exchanged that the new server shows the client node as being TDP for Oracle on NT. But the message on the (new) server is ANR0424W, session rejected, incorrect password. SO we are getting the new TSM server, but can't get the password changed. We've looked in the registry, and a new key has been created there with the TSM servername of the new server. SO WHAT ARE WE MISSING HERE? Help!?!

APAR IC35399 has been opened for this. Until a fix is available, do not use server-to-server command routing. Rather, connect to the target server to run the command. Re: Whats wrong with this EXCLUDE ?
I am assuming you mean NT 4.0 versus 2000 (or higher). The exclude works for me. Some things to check: - Double-check your client options set and verify the syntax of the statement. - Double-check that this options set is specified for the node ANR3.VCU.EDU. - From the client machine run DSMC Q INCLEXCL. What does that show? - Does putting the exclude directly in the dsm.opt file make any difference? The pagefile.sys file is not a "system object" per se, so this wouldn't fall into a "system object" issue. Also, if this is NT 4.0, system objects don't apply, anyway. TDP for Domino ACD5130E message
Good morning all. First things first. We are running TSM 4.2.1.9 on OS/390 2.10. Also running TSM 4.1.2.12 on NT and TDP for Domino 1.1. All of our Domino servers ( 6 ) are configured the same way but one of our Domino servers is receiving the following message when we attempt to restore a mail file: ACD5130E - Could not initialize the connection to Lotus Domino properly error=416. This is a pretty generic message an indicates either a TDP or Domino install problem. This server is however backing up without issue and we have been able to do restores in the past. We did have this same issue once before on this server and we did a re-install of TDP which appeared to have corrected this issue until today. Has anyone else experienced this problem and if so is it a known problem with a fix available? I am aware that the TSM client version is no longer supported and that TDP 1.1 will be unsupported in April of this year. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks. Brian Brian L. Re: Why my library doesn't compress data?
OK... TSM will estimate the capacity of a device/media pair based on what you set with the device class definition and if nothing is specified there, it will be based on what the ~driver~ reports, THIS IS WHILE A VOLUME IS FILLING. Now what is actually shown as the capacity once the volume is FULL is what has been written to the tape. What does all of this mean ? I'd say the 6500MB is close to your stated 7 GB native capacity... if you do a "q dev f=d" and see "Est/Max Capacity (MB)" as blank, the 6500 is being provided by the device driver and that is where it is coming from... Now the 21 GB is an ~estimated at 3/1 compression" and if your full volumes show only about 12-13 GB that means that either you have uncompressed cliient that doesn't compress very well OR you have a mixture of compressed & uncompressed (at the client) client data. Basically when a tape's EndOfTape marker is reached, TSM assigns a capacity equal to what it has written to that specific tape. If you front end things with a diskpool, the amount reported on a tape is what was read from the disk and put on the tape. Client compressed data doesn't reduce at the tape drive with tape drive compression SO if all your client data came into your tsm server as ~client compressed~, I'd expect the capacity of FULL tapes to be about 7 GB. If all your data came in from your clients uncompressed AND it were all Oracle DB file type data I'd expect your FULL volumes to be about 21-22 GB. If any of the data is something like a .zip file or other type of already compressed data outside tsm client compression, it won't compress at the drive either and that can cause variations in what the capacity is reported on FULL volumes. whew, my explanation isn't very pretty but does it clear things up a bit ??? Re: /VAR skipped during incremental
I'm sure /var is one of the directories TSM excludes by default (as is /tmp), and always has been. You will probably need to use an include/exclude list to include it in your backup. Although I could be wrong.. Hi Richard! Forgot about the domain statement... :-( According to our standards they shouldn't use the domain statement, but they did. They removed it from the dsm.opt: problem solved. We just went through the same process and changed all our Disk Volumes to Mod 9's. The only difference is an increase in response time during the daily migration process only. It was never noticeable it but it does show up on a report. Most of the process during that increase time was data transferring. It can be taken care by increasing the block size but as I stated this increase was it was not noticeable and does not happen during any other process so we just left it. Re: /VAR skipped during incremental
Are you sure it skips /var ? Could it be that /var is just a subdirectory under the filesystem / ? (and you don't see "~...processing file system /var...~" ? ) I'd also double check the include/exclude list specified in the dsm.sys file for the tsm server being used. I'd also check the restart data of the scheduler against the last time the dsm.sys file or the include/exclude list file was changed... if either of those files are newer than the last start time of the scheduler, I'd bounce the scheduler and see what happens. Not that anyone would ever do this BUT someone might set an include/exclude list to exclude /.../* bounce the scheduler set the include/exclude list back to normal (to make things ~look~ OK). (sigh...) WOW ! gives me an idea... a daily job that reports to me any clients that have save dates for those files which are newer than the last bounce date of the scheduler task... Re: (logical/physical volumes)
What I have noticed over the years (in AIX environments) is that TSM spreads the load out across its direct access volumes. Say you have 9 logical volumes across 3 physical and you have 3 inbound client sessions... TSM will spread that inbound traffic across 3 of its (locical) volumes. If you have 3 logical volumes per physical volumes, the inbound work might be going all to the same physical volume. So there is a possibility of a slight performance problem by having multiple logical volumes per physical volume, I say slight because I very rarely see small numbers of inbound sessions (or activity) on the tsm servers. If you resize to a 1 logical per physical, you might see a slight increase in performance... just my 2 cents worth based on general observations over the past 7 years. Re: Two schedules
Hello Jacque You can do this by creating another node, (for the "special" directory), and create another Client Scheduler, and a new client schedule. Just associate the new node with the new schedule, and thats it. Rgds Geirr G. Thanks again for your help - it's much appreciated. Jeff In my experience, if the channel does not form, the switch has no way of knowing these 2 (or more) ports go to the same node. Therefore, it will treat them as two (or more) separate nodes since it will see two different MAC addresses: one on each port. The IP address assigned to each NIC should then be ping-able (asuming all routing/VLANs and such working properly) as it would as if you were not trying to channel and just had a node with 2 NICs. The only way I can think of this NOT happening, is if: (a) mis-config of NIC(s) on node e.g. no IP assigned, administratively downed (b) the switch is set to FORCE a channel (done with "CHANNEL-GROUP x MODE ON" or some variation of depending on switch model...). In this case, the switch will be expecting a channel to form, if one does not, connectivity may not be established. This can be used to form a channel if the NIC(s) do NOT suppport PAgP, or have weak support of, but are still capable of EtherChannel since no PAgP frames are sent in the "ON" mode. We had case (b) happen on some Intel NICs we had once. They supported EtherChannel, but for some reason PAgP did not work. When we set the channel to "ON" (forced) and it worked. This might be the case with ours. Hope that helps some! Chris

2nd try : TDP for informix 64 bit : how to expire informix logical logs from TSM DB ?
Hi *SM'ers An old topic to the ones familiar to this list : does anybody have a nice tip for deleting Informix logs from TSM server ? My problem is that we're now using 64 bit version of Informix, and that the version of Expire.c utility we used before doesn't work anymore. Did anyone succeed in modifying it to have it working for informix 64 bits, or does anybody know another (new ?) way for getting a rid of those logs ? Thanks in advance. Re: Reassignment of existing backup filespaces
The best that you can do is a move node data under V5.1 as far as I know. What you do is get the data in a different primary pool and give them the primary tapes for those file spaces and a copy of the database. The node name does not change in this scenario. If you need to keep a copy of the data, then create a copy of the new primary pool in its own copy pool and once the tapes are removed do a restore volume for each volume in that primary pool. This is not much better than what you had before, but it may help. Paul D. Seay, Jr. Technical Specialist Naptheon Inc. 757-688-8180 -Original Message- From: David le Blanc [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Sunday, January 12, 2003 10:40 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Reassignment of existing backup filespaces Hi TSMers, I'm in the position of recommending a solution to a sticky problem. A customer has sold off some infrastructure and applications, and wishes all backups associated with that infrastructure to go along with the hardware. Unfortunately, the hardware is running some applications which are not leaving, but are in-fact being rehosted before the equipment leaves. *ASSUMING* the data I want to keep is in a particular file system (that is, no need to worry about sub-filesystem granularity) I can 'export node' the appropriate filespaces and re-import them under an alternate node name. Then when the new node has these filespaces, I can delete the original and give away the media and a copy of the database. The re-hosted application will then automatically back up to the imported filespaces under the new host name, and no historical information will be lost. The $US10Million question is :- Can I reassign a file space from NodeX to NodeY without going through the 'export/import' debacle? There is after all, almost 400 tapes going back I don't know how many years containing data from some number of terabytes of IBM ESS storage. Is there a user-land or 'hidden' command to reassign a filespace from NodeX to NodeY? If not, can anyone make a better suggestion on how to do this? Cheers. David
