Re: binding backups to different management classes

2003-03-17 Thread Zlatko Krastev/ACIT
It is always highly recommended to use separate nodes for B/A client
(files) and TDP (application). TSM licenses are processor-based (v5.1) or
system-size (v4.2 and below) and do not depend on number of nodes over the
system.
For TDPO (RMAN) I would highly recommend to look at TDP for Oracle manual
(you can see there a separate option file is used, not one used by B/A
client).

Re: binding backups to different management classes

You are not binding a whole node. You can bind a set of files to a class,
another set to different class, etc.
If bindings are not defined through include options (dsm.sys for UNIX,
dsm.opt from Windows, cloptset for both) it is equivalent to binding of
everything to the default class.
Only one class can be default in a policy domain and node can belong to
only one domain at any particular moment (later another class can become
default or node can be moved to another domain).

Thus you have two options:
- bind everything to a particular class
-- for UNIX - include /.../* class name
-- for Windows - include ?:\...\* class name
- move the node to a domain in which the class is default - upd no node
name dom=domain name

Hi Adrian,

This is the meaning of ANS4023E error:

ANS4023E Error processing filespace namepath-namefile-name: file
input/output error
Explanation: An error was found while reading from or writing to the file.
System Action: File skipped.
User Response: Check your system to ensure that it is operating properly.
For OS/2, run CHKDSK /F for the failing drive which can be found in dsmerror

As I see, your client OS version is Windows, so you can run CHKDSK /F to
verify that your hard drives are correct and to repair then if there are
some errors.

My question is how to do this as eficintly as possible (som of databases

Is there any other solution than to use two different node names?
And if I use two node names for Oracle backup, how to configure TDP? Do I

2003-03-17 Thread Flemming Hougaard
Hello Torsten

You need to make an exclude of the licenseobject container as in the example below:

EXCLUDE.DIR NDS:.O=Novell.OU=Aarhus.NLS:Publisher=Novell+NLS:Product=NetWare 5 Conn
SCL+NLS:Version=510
EXCLUDE.DIR NDS:.O=Novell.OU=Aarhus.NLS:Publisher=Novell+NLS:Product=NetWare 5
Server+NLS:Version=510

By the way... it's not an error according to Novell, it's Working as designed - in
fact kind of silly, they think it shouldn't be allowed to recreate an server with
license object (was possible until NetWare 5 SP3 I think)), but I guess if I have
access to the backup... I surely have access to the license diskettes ;)

Good luck

Andy,

Is it possible to specify a mgmtclass for SYSTEM OBJECT sysfiles?

We have tested and successfully implemented
exclude.systemobject sysfiles
for 350 Win2K/XP clients [no active/inactive sysfile backups remain
for these clients], but we have an additional 650 Win2k/XP clients
that are still actively backing up ~2200 sysfiles/client daily.

The active policy set for these nodes contains two management classes
with the following backup copygroup settings:

PolicyPolicyMgmt Copy Versions Versions Retain Retain
DomainSet Name Class Group Data DataExtraOnly
NameName NameExists Deleted Versions Version
- - - - ---
YOD ACTIVEEXPIRING STANDARD 100 0
YOD ACTIVESTANDARD STANDARD 21 35 60

Before I exclude sysfiles from backup, I would like to specifically
include
them to backup with our EXPIRING management class so that sysfiles will be
eligible for immediate deletion by EXPIre Inventory processing the next
day after I exclude them from backup, rather than having to wait for the
STANDARD RETOnly=60 days to pass.

Adding the following line to dsm.opt:
Include SYSTEM OBJECT sysfiles expiring
does not generate any error, but I doubt that it's doing what I had hoped!

Is it possible to assign a specific mgmtclass for SYSTEM OBJECT
sysfiles?

Hi all,

Can TSM use a small autoloader to do the onsite copies and a
manual tape drive to do the offsite copies. The offsite copies couldn't
be reclamed, but they could be destroyed when they have very little data
left on them. Next time an offsite copy is done, the deleted files would
be re-transfered to the offsite copy.

Since you still can't reclaim offsite tapes to a reclaimpool, this could
be done on a small install so that you don't need a two drive library to
use TSM to backup your data?

What do you guys think?

2003-03-17 Thread GUILLAUMONT Etienne
Hello,

I did that at a customer's : One single drive LTO autoloader in which I
have the primary backup pool and also the db backups and one single
external DLT1 drive for offsite copies. Each day, I backup the primary pool
to the DLT1. The main problem is that I had to write scripts in order to
have the right tape in readwrite state and the other ones in offsite state
. I found it a little tricky because it seems that TSM isn't able to check
which tape is in the drive before choosing on which it will write. But as
Nick wrote, the reclamation is not a real problem as if your tapes are in
offsite state, TSM will use the primary tapes for reclamation..
Another possibility which have already been described in this list is to
buy cheap big disks for the primary storagepools and to use the autoloader
for the copypools only. But this may be expensive if you have big amounts
of data to backup.

What you say is true, but If an admin changes the node's password,
they have left tracks. They cannot change the password back to what it

Calling dsmc or dsm with -node=tarzan and specifying a valid admin id and

Am I wrong? Could someone explain this feature in more detail?

Charging chargeback

2003-03-17 Thread Gill, Geoffrey L.
I was wondering if someone has a model for charging back customers for
use/storage of data within TSM. I am trying to implement a new environment
but am not sure how to go about figuring this. I have hardware costs, tape
costs, software costs, maintenance costs and floor space costs to add a new
system. Before anyone even takes a look at it they want me to figure out
how, and how much, to charge back to the customers. The problem is I have no
hard data as to how many clients and the amount of data each will use. Can
you figure costs like this without knowledge about the clients? We are only
allowed to recoup costs, not make money.

Re: Fragmented Database Question 2

2003-03-17 Thread Roger Deschner
Why is your Maximum Extension anything other than zero? Is there some
reason you are deliberately hiding some of your database capacity from
yourself? At any rate, it is probably causing confusion as you look at
the numbers from QUERY DB. Enter

EXTEND DB 1500

and then do a query and the numbers should make much more sense.

The only time you should deliberately reduce the database capacity is if
you have some kind of reorganization project underway, in which case it
is useful and essential to reduce the database and/or log to less than
the amount of disk space you have. There's a nice treatise on how all
this works in TSM Administrator's Guide - look for the section titled
How Space is Managed by the Server which is in the chapter Managing
the Database and Recovery Log, which is Chapter 19 in the manual
version for V4.2. (GC35-0403-01)

And I agree with Richard Sims about not worrying about fragmentation. It
comes with the territory, and there's nothing lasting you can do about
it, so spend your time worrying about the things you can control. You
can gain much more performance, and your gains will be permanent, with

Subject:Fragmented Database Question 2

Hi Again

Regarding the TSM DB, wouldn't the 'Used' and 'Total Usable Pages' figures
help to point to a fragmentation problem.

The output fro our DB is as follows:-

Available Space (MB):                         10,000
       Assigned Capacity (MB):         8,500
       Maximum Extension (MB):         1,500
       Maximum Reduction (MB):         1,492
            Page Size (bytes):         4,096
           Total Usable Pages:         2,176,000
                   Used Pages:         1,787,528
                     Pct Util:         82.1
                Max. Pct Util:         82.5
             Physical Volumes:         2
            Buffer Pool Pages:         32,768
        Total Buffer Requests:         10,278,342
               Cache Hit Pct.:         98.88
              Cache Wait Pct.:         0.00

Our database is 8500Mb assigned, and 82.1% utilised. So how do the figures
of '1,787,528 pages used' and '2,176,000 Usable Pages' work in this case.
If we have used 81% percent of 8500, our usable pages should be much lower
than used pages shouldn't it? Or am I missing something?

Thanks again

I'm Running TSM 4.2.2.12 on a Solaris 2.7 server (E250 400Mhz, 1GB mem).
We have been having severe performance issues recently and moved our
database
volumes off onto a new disk...

You haven't cited the cause-effect case which would motivate such a
change.
Are you certain that is the problem area?  If this is a substantial
server,
then I would first wonder about the 1 GB memory size, which is rather
small
these days.  More memory is usually the most expeditious way to increase
the performance of a computer system.  System performance monitoring
should
reveal the bottlenecks.

Also, is there anyway to see if indeed the database is fragmented?

(Chuckle)  By definition, all databases are fragmented - it's
inevitable,
and the way they operate.  You will see numerous postings in the archives
that advise you not to be fixated on this, as it's unavoidable, and
efforts
to fix it are ephemeral and time-costly.

Joni - You really have to perform such queries from the client, as
very little detail is available from the server, because
the details are OS-dependent. Select queries will yield size info
in terms of Aggregates, which won't help you.

I don't know if you are going to be able to do that with a select statement.
adsm.archives adsm.backups have the NODE_NAME, FILESPACE_NAME, HL_NAME,
LL_NAME but no info on size
adsm.occupancy has node_name, filespace_name, some MB fields but nothing
file name specific
adsm.contents has node_name, filespace_name, file_name, file_size (stored
size) but you will find that all members of an aggregate have the size of
the aggregate listed (last time I looked)
so anyway, I don't know if what you are looking for is obtainable via
selects from an admin session.

Testing space management in new server code

2003-03-17 Thread Thomas Denier
We are in the process of testing 5.1.6.2 server code under OS/390. We
have an AIX 4.3 system with 4.1.2.0 client code, including space
management. I understand how to have some backup/archive client
operations on a given system connect to our production server and
others connect to our test server. Is it possible to have space
managment functions for some file systems use the production server
and space management functions for other file systems use the test
server?

Selective backups

2003-03-17 Thread Todd Lundstedt
I have recently setup a Directory Management Class, some server-side Client
Option Sets pointing DIRMC to that management class, and assigned those
option sets to nodes. So now, all new/changed directories should be being
managed by that management class (disk based storage, no migration, etc.).
I can see that going to each node and issuing a
dsmc selective -dirsonly -subdir=yes c:\* g:\*
and any other drives that exist will re-backup versions of all directories
on the listed disk drives.

But, that's a lot of work.
So I tried an immediate action schedule on one of the servers.
Action = Selective
Options = -dirsonly -subdir=yes
Objects = c:\*,d:\*,g:\*

and that immediate action schedule finally tried to run 7 hours later, and
didn't work.

Is there anything I can do from the server to kick off a -dirsonly
-subdir=yes backup of ALL existing drives in a list of nodes? From what I
am gathering, the selective backup requires a filespace and I have not been
able to get *:\* to work yet. Or, do I need to even worry about this? My
intention was to (eventually) get all backup versions of directory objects
off of tape and stored only on disk.

Thanks in advance.

TSM Security

cannot find very much documentation on security other than ports used

We currently use TSM v5.1.5 on AIX 4.3 with just about every client you TSM

I don't know of a summary paper describing TSM security; but the manuals,
and particularly the Technical Guide redbooks, fully describe what's
available in the product. The product has historically depended upon
being in a physically secure environment, but recent additions like
encrypted communication has improved things. Use of Encrypted File
Systems on the client is another booster. The absence of documentation
for the proprietary aspects of the product, such as tape format, further
facilitates security. :-)

Hi,

I have a Netware6 cluster where I can't get the TSM client (v5.1.5.15) to
work properly.
I have manage to set up a client to backup the non clustered disk (SYS:),
but when I try to configuered the backup of clustered volumes I run into
some strange problems.

The option file is located at cd1shr1:/tsm/dsm.opt with the following
changes from the default dsm.opt that is used for backing up SYS:
clusternode yes
nodename hwcd1shr1p
httpport 1582
domain cd1shr1:
nwpwfile yes
passworddir cd1shr1:/tsm
schedlogname cd1shr1:/tsm/log/dsmsched.log
errorlogname cd1shr1:/tsm/log/dsmerror.log

When I load the client with dsmc q sched -optfile=cd1shr1:/tsm/dsm.opt I
get the following error message:

ANS1036S Invalid option '' found in option file '' at line : 0
Invalid entry ''

This error message is logged in cd1shr1:/tsm/log/dsmerror.log, so at least
the client is reading the option file.

If I remove the line 'clusternode yes' from the option file the client
works fine, except you have to retype the password everytime the cluster
failsover.

Do anybody have an idea what is wrong, and how to fix it?
(Will call Tivoli support tomorrow, since it past office hour today)

ndd -set /dev/hme adv_10hdx_cap 0
ndd -set /dev/hme adv_100hdx_cap 0
ndd -set /dev/hme adv_autoneg_cap 0

#Settings for qfe1
ndd -set /dev/qfe instance 1
ndd -set /dev/qfe adv_100fdx_cap 1

ndd -set /dev/qfe adv_10hdx_cap 0
ndd -set /dev/qfe adv_100hdx_cap 0

True, but on some interfaces you might want to leave auto negotiate on or have
a different setting (depending on the brand of the switch or the settings that seem to
work best on that subnet. i.e. one interface is on a monitoring network were we use
older dime a dozen 10Mb switches because speed and throughput are not needed, just
connectivity.)

Both methods will work depending on what he wants to achieve.

2003-03-17 Thread Jim Kirkman
Interesting.

I use the 'cluster=off' switch in the smsrun file, you have to for TSM to recognize
the clustered volumes. I also, however,
user clusternode yes in the option file. I've found that using that is what triggers
the common file space naming for the
volumes. Without it each volume has the netware nodename assigned to the filespace,
which defeats the 'cluster aware' aspect
of backups if and when there is a failover. With it you're supposed to get the cluster
name as a prefix to the volumes. I
say 'supposed to' because I get the container name instead, but as long as it's
consistent that's fine.

So, my advice to Odd-Magne would be to edit your smsrun.bas file (SYS:
NSN\USER\SMSRUN.BAS) and add the switch David has
documented but leave clusternode yes in the option file and see what you get.

Also, you need password generate in the option file to avoid having to retype the
password continually.

 Subject: Netware6 Cluster problem

Re: Year retention oracle backups

2003-03-17 Thread Steve Harris
Josef,

I nearly didn't reply to this because of your inappropriate subject line - I'll
assume it was a mistake.

RMAN generates its own names for the backuppieces, but the oracle admin has control
of the prefix used.
One option that they can use is different prefixes for different retentions, and then
use these prefixes in their delete scripts.
TDPO doesn't care. It holds its data until RMAN tells it to delete. It is the DBA's
problem not yours.

one of our customer wants to backup Oracle databases in such a way, that
along with normal daily backup with 14 days retension should be also once a

for 1 year.
My question is how to do this as eficintly as possible (som of databases

Is there any other solution than to use two different node names?
And if I use two node names for Oracle backup, how to configure TDP? Do I
need two RMAN backup repositories - one for each TSM node or can I use only
one?

Dwight,

What you say is true, but If an admin changes the node's password,
they have left tracks. They cannot change the password back to what it
was, unless they knew what it was to start with. The next time the client
goes to use TSM, they will be aware that their password was changed.

I was amazed to find out that admins could do this without leaving
tracks. This is somewhat disconcerting.

Hello,
I always thought that a tsm admin does not have access to client data. I
think I learned something new.
Calling dsmc or dsm with -node=tarzan and specifying a valid admin id and
password (system privilege) gives access to node tarzan's data. At least
it
is possible to list the files. I haven't tried to restore data. This is
indeed documented. However, I would prefer if there were a message in the
activity log saying that admin id was used.
Am I wrong? Could someone explain this feature in more detail?

Best regards

client wont start if I specify 'clusternode yes' in the option file. My

or should I say want to use 'clusternode yes'.
I don't really see setting 'clusternode no' as an option, one reason is
mention by Jim, the other reason is that with 'clusternode no' the
scheduler ask for the TSM password everytime its failed over to a new node.
(I belive this has to do with TSM using the hostname to encrypt the client
password, unless you specify 'clusternode yes'.)

Antwort: Tape sharing - how does TSM handle duplicate device file names

2003-03-17 Thread Markus Veit
Hi,
it is quite normal for device names to be different when you use library
sharing,
you only have to define the path on the management server for the client, you
dont have to define drives on the client.
On the client you only have to make sure that the name for the library is the
same as for the manager, i.e. Manager library1, client has to be library1. No
paths for the library are defined on the client. No path for the client is
defined on the manager for the library the client wants to use. No drives are
defined on the client.

for example,
Library is an ADIC100 (3583?)
Manager is 5.1.xx W2k server library device is lb0.2.0.4
Manager drive device is mt0.2.0.5

Client is AIX 5.1 TSM 5.1.xx library device is lb0
Client drive device is rmt5

Define server to server communication, follow the manual
Define lib as shared on manager, define library adic100 libt=scsi shared=yes
define path on manager, define path w2k adic100 srctype=server desttype=library
device=lb0.2.0.4
define drive on manager, define drive adic100 ltodrive1 element=256
etc.

define lib on client, define library adic100 libt=shared primarylibmanager=w2k

On the manager define the drives to the client, define path AIX5.1 ltodrive1
srctype=server desttype=drive library=adic100 device=/dev/rmt5 online=YES
Thats all, works well for us.
