Re: binding backups to different management classes
It is always highly recommended to use separate nodes for B/A client (files) and TDP (application). TSM licenses are processor-based (v5.1) or system-size (v4.2 and below) and do not depend on number of nodes over the system. For TDPO (RMAN) I would highly recommend to look at TDP for Oracle manual (you can see there a separate option file is used, not one used by B/A client). My question is how to do this as eficintly as possible (som of databases are quite large - 400 GB). Is there any other solution than to use two different node names? Re: Can you use a manual tape drive for your copypool?
Hello, I did that at a customer's : One single drive LTO autoloader in which I have the primary backup pool and also the db backups and one single external DLT1 drive for offsite copies. Each day, I backup the primary pool to the DLT1. The main problem is that I had to write scripts in order to have the right tape in readwrite state and the other ones in offsite state . I found it a little tricky because it seems that TSM isn't able to check which tape is in the drive before choosing on which it will write. But as Nick wrote, the reclamation is not a real problem as if your tapes are in offsite state, TSM will use the primary tapes for reclamation.. Another possibility which have already been described in this list is to buy cheap big disks for the primary storagepools and to use the autoloader for the copypools only. But this may be expensive if you have big amounts of data to backup. Dwight, What you say is true, but If an admin changes the node's password, they have left tracks. They cannot change the password back to what it was, unless they knew what it was to start with. The next time the client goes to use TSM, they will be aware that their password was changed. I was amazed to find out that admins could do this without leaving tracks. Re: Fragmented Database Question 2
Why is your Maximum Extension anything other than zero? Is there some reason you are deliberately hiding some of your database capacity from yourself? At any rate, it is probably causing confusion as you look at the numbers from QUERY DB. Enter EXTEND DB 1500 and then do a query and the numbers should make much more sense. The only time you should deliberately reduce the database capacity is if you have some kind of reorganization project underway, in which case it is useful and essential to reduce the database and/or log to less than the amount of disk space you have. There's a nice treatise on how all this works in TSM Administrator's Guide - look for the section titled How Space is Managed by the Server which is in the chapter Managing the Database and Recovery Log, which is Chapter 19 in the manual version for V4.2. (GC35-0403-01) And I agree with Richard Sims about not worrying about fragmentation. It comes with the territory, and there's nothing lasting you can do about it, so spend your time worrying about the things you can control. You can gain much more performance, and your gains will be permanent, with basic OS-level disk tuning, and by spending your time lobbying your boss for a bigger faster computer to run your server on. The economic downturn has produced some fabulous buys on used server-grade equipment, such as RS/6000 and Sun. In December, I upgraded the hardware to 8x more crunching power and 8x more memory, and it's a much, much happier TSM server. I don't know if you are going to be able to do that with a select statement. adsm.archives adsm.backups have the NODE_NAME, FILESPACE_NAME, HL_NAME, LL_NAME but no info on size adsm.occupancy has node_name, filespace_name, some MB fields but nothing file name specific adsm.contents has node_name, filespace_name, file_name, file_size (stored size) but you will find that all members of an aggregate have the size of the aggregate listed (last time I looked) so anyway, I don't know if what you are looking for is obtainable via selects from an admin session. Testing space management in new server code
We are in the process of testing 5.1.6.2 server code under OS/390. We have an AIX 4.3 system with 4.1.2.0 client code, including space management. I understand how to have some backup/archive client operations on a given system connect to our production server and others connect to our test server. Is it possible to have space managment functions for some file systems use the production server and space management functions for other file systems use the test server?
Selective backups
I have recently setup a Directory Management Class, some server-side Client Option Sets pointing DIRMC to that management class, and assigned those option sets to nodes. So now, all new/changed directories should be being managed by that management class (disk based storage, no migration, etc.). I can see that going to each node and issuing a dsmc selective -dirsonly -subdir=yes c:\* g:\* and any other drives that exist will re-backup versions of all directories on the listed disk drives. But, that's a lot of work. So I tried an immediate action schedule on one of the servers. Action = Selective Options = -dirsonly -subdir=yes Objects = c:\*,d:\*,g:\* and that immediate action schedule finally tried to run 7 hours later, and didn't work. Is there anything I can do from the server to kick off a -dirsonly -subdir=yes backup of ALL existing drives in a list of nodes? From what I am gathering, the selective backup requires a filespace and I have not been able to get *:\* to work yet. Or, do I need to even worry about this? My intention was to (eventually) get all backup versions of directory objects off of tape and stored only on disk. Thanks in advance.

TSM Security
Hello folks, IT Security is getting on me to provide better security for TSM server, the TSM Clients, the Tape Library and, most importantly, the filespace. I cannot find very much documentation on security other than ports used through a firewall and passwordaccess generate options (I hear we can even encrypt these). I don't know of a summary paper describing TSM security; but the manuals, and particularly the Technical Guide redbooks, fully describe what's available in the product. The product has historically depended upon being in a physically secure environment, but recent additions like encrypted communication has improved things. Use of Encrypted File Systems on the client is another booster. The absence of documentation for the proprietary aspects of the product, such as tape format, further facilitates security. :-) Richard Sims, BU

Check for the following Netstat -p tcp Netstat -p ip Netstat -D Netstat -m This will give you some idea on how ur network is functioning.Check ur netmask and default gateway how is they are doing on n/w. Re: sunOS 5.7 problem
True, but on some interfaces you might want to leave auto negotiate on or have a different setting (depending on the brand of the switch or the settings that seem to work best on that subnet. i.e. one interface is on a monitoring network were we use older dime a dozen 10Mb switches because speed and throughput are not needed, just connectivity.) Both methods will work depending on what he wants to achieve. Re: Netware6 Cluster problem
Interesting. I use the 'cluster=off' switch in the smsrun file, you have to for TSM to recognize the clustered volumes. I also, however, user clusternode yes in the option file. I've found that using that is what triggers the common file space naming for the volumes. Without it each volume has the netware nodename assigned to the filespace, which defeats the 'cluster aware' aspect of backups if and when there is a failover. With it you're supposed to get the cluster name as a prefix to the volumes. I say 'supposed to' because I get the container name instead, but as long as it's consistent that's fine. So, my advice to Odd-Magne would be to edit your smsrun.bas file (SYS: NSN\USER\SMSRUN.BAS) and add the switch David has documented but leave clusternode yes in the option file and see what you get. Also, you need password generate in the option file to avoid having to retype the password continually. Marsh, David wrote: Actually on a Novell Cluster, Cluster node should =no. Re: Year retention oracle backups
Josef, I nearly didn't reply to this because of your inappropriate subject line - I'll assume it was a mistake. RMAN generates its own names for the backuppieces, but the oracle admin has control of the prefix used. One option that they can use is different prefixes for different retentions, and then use these prefixes in their delete scripts. TDPO doesn't care. It holds its data until RMAN tells it to delete. Tape sharing - how does TSM handle duplicate device file names
--- This email is to be read subject to the disclaimer below. --- We currently have two TSM environments at separate sites. Each environment has a SAN connected 3494/3590 (via a MacData Switch and two SDG's). Both TSM environments are isolated within separate zones. This segregation means that both environments have the same drive and path configurations defined to TSM (eg DRV0 = /dev/rmt/0stc) We would now like to invoke library sharing so to automagically write our copy pools and database backups offsite. When I combine the two zones, both server will discover another 8 3590 drives and will build the special device files. Now I would have the situation where the physical drive on the 'managing server' will know the OS as /dev/rmt/0stc and the 'client' it will be /dev/rmt/8stc etc etc. Will this cause an issue with the sharing functionality. In other words, does the special file( ie path definition in TSM) to physical hardware association need to be in sync. If it does not matter, how does the managing server tell the client server where the media it requested has been mounted. Re: Client login with admin id and password
Paul, if I am UNIX root I would be able to perform su user and act on his behalf. I fully agree with you that TSM ought to provide some kind of logging in this case (just to write in actlog admin's name instead of node ought to be enough). OTOH going back to UNIX I can edit the /var/adm/sulog file. They cannot change the password back to what it was, unless they knew what it was to start with. The next time the client goes to use TSM, they will be aware that their password was changed. I was amazed to find out that admins could do this without leaving tracks. This is somewhat disconcerting. ..Paul At 09:03 AM 3/12/2003 -0800, Cook, Dwight E wrote: Well, since a system privileged admin id could change the node's password and then connect without using their admin id password (use the one they just set it to) I can see why the straight use of their id password would be allowed. I think I learned something new. Calling dsmc or dsm with -node=tarzan and specifying a valid admin id and password (system privilege) gives access to node tarzan's data. At least it is possible to list the files. I haven't tried to restore data. This is indeed documented. However, I would prefer if there were a message in the activity log saying that admin id was used. Am I wrong? Could someone explain this feature in more detail? Re: Netware6 Cluster problem
I have already changed the smsrun.bas file, my problem is simply that the client wont start if I specify 'clusternode yes' in the option file. My setup is more or less identical to the procedure from David, except I use or should I say want to use 'clusternode yes'. I don't really see setting 'clusternode no' as an option, one reason is mention by Jim, the other reason is that with 'clusternode no' the scheduler ask for the TSM password everytime its failed over to a new node. (I belive this has to do with TSM using the hostname to encrypt the client password, unless you specify 'clusternode yes'.) -- Regards, Odd-Magne On Mon, 17 Mar 2003 16:36:22 -0500, Jim Kirkman [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Interesting. I have manage to set up a client to backup the non clustered disk (SYS:) , but when I try to configuered the backup of clustered volumes I run into some strange problems. The option file is located at cd1shr1:/tsm/dsm.opt with the following changes from the default dsm.opt that is used for backing up SYS: clusternode yes nodename hwcd1shr1p httpport 1582 domain cd1shr1: nwpwfile yes passworddir cd1shr1:/tsm schedlogname cd1shr1:/tsm/log/dsmsched.log errorlogname cd1shr1:/tsm/log/dsmerror.log When I load the client with dsmc q sched -optfile=cd1shr1:/tsm/dsm.opt I get the following error message: ANS1036S Invalid option '' found in option file '' at line : 0 Invalid entry '' This error message is logged in cd1shr1:/tsm/log/dsmerror.log, so at least the client is reading the option file. If I remove the line 'clusternode yes' from the option file the client works fine, except you have to retype the password everytime the cluster failsover. Do anybody have an idea what is wrong, and how to fix it? Antwort: Tape sharing - how does TSM handle duplicate device file names
Hi, it is quite normal for device names to be different when you use library sharing, you only have to define the path on the management server for the client, you dont have to define drives on the client. On the client you only have to make sure that the name for the library is the same as for the manager, i.e. Manager library1, client has to be library1. No paths for the library are defined on the client. No path for the client is defined on the manager for the library the client wants to use. No drives are defined on the client. for example, Library is an ADIC100 (3583?) Manager is 5.1.xx W2k server library device is lb0.2.0.4 Manager drive device is mt0.2.0.5 Client is AIX 5.1 TSM 5.1.xx library device is lb0 Client drive device is rmt5 Define server to server communication, follow the manual Define lib as shared on manager, define library adic100 libt=scsi shared=yes define path on manager, define path w2k adic100 srctype=server desttype=library device=lb0.2.0.4 define drive on manager, define drive adic100 ltodrive1 element=256 etc. define lib on client, define library adic100 libt=shared primarylibmanager=w2k On the manager define the drives to the client, define path AIX5.1 ltodrive1 srctype=server desttype=drive library=adic100 device=/dev/rmt5 online=YES Thats all, works well for us.
