Re: NOvell errors
At a guess from the Novell SAP tables, the object is an old NetWare 3.x (or earlier) server object in the tree, or an old print server/queue. If it is an old queue then print queues are marked as deny read/write IIRC, so it is as expected. It could also be a box with NCPFS running. If you get the Novell administrator to tell you exactly what that bindery object is (and whether it really still needs to be there), then you would be able to make a judgement. As bindery services started being run down almost 10 years ago, then it may be just old baggage that could be deleted from the directory. Re: D2D backup with TSM
Hi Jim! I know that this will involve running reclamation on the ATA storage pool but we felt using a DISK device class would waste to much storage because of fragmentation. Why did you think fragmentation was a waste of space? If a file expires, the space it allocated on a diskpool becomes free space, so it shouldn't be considered wasted. I can imagine that when a lot of little files expire, one gets a lot of fragmented free space, which could have impact on the specific disks performance in the long run. Funny to see that a lot of people (including us) are thinking about SATA storage for their backups. There doesn't seem to be anybody with real hands-on experience however... Re: Anr2841w Server is NOT IN COMPLIANCE with license terms.
I suggest that you read the actlog from your last startup. TSM loads the licences and explains if there is a problem. You may need to re-copy the licence files and adsmlicn.dll(Windows) from the multi-coloured installation CD for your server current version. If that doesn't fix it, run the original licence setup again. Rgds Tony -Original Message- From: Crawford, L. Re: D2D backup with TSM
Yes . . . exactly. From reading about the EMC DL700, it truly emuilates tape libraries, tape drives and tape cartridges. Actually, it can concurrently emulate multiple libraries (of the same kind of different kinds), different kinds of tape drives (lto, dlt, etc), with emulated tape cartridges. You would have to run reclamation on the emulated tape cartridges just like a real tape system. You could set it up and one big library and use tsm tape drive sharing to share the virtual library/drives between several tsm instances, or, give each tsm instance their own virtual library. Re: D2D backup with TSM
Why did you think fragmentation was a waste of space? If a file expires, the space it allocated on a diskpool becomes free space, so it shouldn't be considered wasted. Just how does a disk pool handle storage? I know TSM tracks every file, but is storage handles per file? For example . . . aggregrates - bunches of small files that TSM handles as one big file. To get back the space from expired files in a aggregrate requires runing a reclamation on the tape/data. A move data cmd only copies an aggregrate whole - expired files and all. multiple schedules?
It seems like my current TSM setup has servers grouped into like processing (or similiar) categories for backup scheduling. Is there any benefit in keeping the groups currently in place, but adding a schedule per server and maybe a schedule per platform? Creating a matrix of schedules instead of simple, linear groups. The only advantage I can think of being able to schedule or force a backup of a server *now* without requiring all servers in that same group to backup. Mike
3583 scripting from windows
I have a 3583 library that I use with TSM from AIX to do informix backups - which take about three hours a day. I have it hooked up to a windows box which is not running TSM server or client. From within AIX I can script certain things using tapeutil - is there any such beast which can be used from within windows (w2k) to automate moving of tapes about within the library? Ie `tapeutil -f /dev/smc0 move 16 256` Thanks Ted Fiedler

We have even set this up as a script, so we can pass the nodename or comma-separated list of nodenames: run test_w_client NodeX run test_u_client NodeX,NodeY,NodeZ I would avoid the matrix approach, if possible - maintenance could become a real headache... -Ted
Re: Separating Windows System Object Backup from the File system Backups
You could always add the DSM_* environemtn variables to the client node. DSM_DIR= DSM_CONFIG= and add the DSM_DIR to the PATH variable. There is a section in the Windows B/A client manual titles Setting environment variables that describe these. One of the reasons listed is: 1. You want to invoke Tivoli Storage Manager from a directory other than the directory where Tivoli Storage Manager is installed. If you set these variables for the System-level you can then use the original command DSMC BACKUP ... wihtout having to code up a .BAT file which CD's to the directory. Cuts out some steps, but works just the same. From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Muhammad Sadat I have first client requiring BMR on Windows. I know that cristie BMR is integrated with Tivoli. Once temporary OS is installed , the media will contact the TSM server and start restore of data and OS files Which means all the control is in the hands of Cristie to let TSM Server know what to do. SV: Cristie BMR solution and TSM
Hey! What CBMR does is create there own system backup of each servers. In that backup CBMR is only backing up Boot files, OS and the ITSM Client and this backup is taking each weekend or every time a major system change have been made. Your ITSM Client is still backing up everything each day. When you server has crash you boot up on a general CD from Cristie and let CBMR partition, format your hard disk and it's also going to restore the backup that CBMR have done during the weekend of your Windows box. When that is done CBMR is going to start your ITSM Client so you can do a point in time restore of your system. When the ITSM client have restore everything in point in time you reboot your Windows box and it's up and running and it's look exact the same since the backup have been made. Re: D2D backup with TSM
From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Richard Rhodes Since I have experienced disk subsystem crashes with loss data, I couldn't ever use just one disk system. I think I'd have to have separate disk systems for the primary pools and copy pools (or tape), and maybe even a third subsystem for the db and staging pools. You want to avoid all single points of failure when possible. However, I'd be inclined to keep the db and log volumes on local disk (controller-mirrored, of course. It's hard to beat disk access speeds from the local bus if you buy the right controller and disk.) A couple of 72GB local disks (mirrored) gives plenty of room for the OS and the TSM db volumes and TSM log volume copies, and a third 72GB local disk for the OS's swap/paging space, the TSM log volumes, and TSM db volume copies. I've been called paranoid . . . but it comes from experience. Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you. -- Mark Stapleton

Delete Offsite Copy Storage Pool
I'm running TSM 5.1.7.0 server on ZOS.The clients are Novell, Windows and AIX (around 400 total). Backups are to mainframe DASD. The primary onsite tape pool is an STK VTS. Backups are collocated by filespace, and we keep 3 versions of active files. Our copy storage pool is stored offsite, and filespaces are not collocated. Our disaster administrator asked if we could do away with the offsite copy storage pool. They would duplex the VTS's backend 9840 tapes and send those offsite, eliminating the need for TSM's copy--storage-pool processing. Change to location of metabase.bin
TSM B/A client 5.2.0.3 Client: Windows 2000 Server We have some IIS servers where Microsoft is recommending to change the location of metabase.bin from c:\winnt\system32\inetsrv to a new subdirectory located at c:\winnt\system32\inetsrv\metabase (see basics of changes below) I just want to get some feedback on what the group thinks if there will be any problems with doing disaster recoveries with these servers. Re: Change to location of metabase.bin
In reading the Q article regarding this, it looks like a registry entry is changed as well to point IIS to this new location. Which hopefully gives TSM the help it needs during a disaster recovery.. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;321142Product=i is50 _ From: Adams, Matt (US - Hermitage) Sent: Wednesday, June 02, 2004 3:23 PM To: 'ADSM: Dist Stor Manager' Subject: Change to location of metabase.bin TSM B/A client 5.2.0.3 Client: Windows 2000 Server We have some IIS servers where Microsoft is recommending to change the location of metabase.bin from c:\winnt\system32\inetsrv to a new subdirectory located at c:\winnt\system32\inetsrv\metabase (see basics of changes below) I just want to get some feedback on what the group thinks if there will be any problems with doing disaster recoveries with these servers. The assumption is since IIS (and Windows) knows about the changed location, when the file is restored back to that location, there should be no problems with IIS on the recovery. Looking at dsmsched.log pre and post move, the file gets backed up, but since it is a Windows system file too, I am just wondering how TSM will handle it. Thoughts? Re: Problems with 2K3 server backups
Mike, When we get these messages in dsmerror.log: 06/02/2004 01:07:45 ANS1950E Backup via Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy failed. See error log for more detail. What error log is the message referring to? It is part of system state. You can use the command vssadmin list writers to show you a list of the services that reside on Windows 2003 which may participate in system state or system service backup. The VSS_E_WRITER_INFRASTRUCTURE is a possible indication that the Windows 2003 Volume Shadow Copy Service is not running or is an error state. The VSS_WS_FAILED_AT_FREEZE is an indication that the WMI service is in such a state that it vetoed the request by TSM to create a shadow copy from which system state backup could be obtained. I would check the status of the Windows Instrumentation Service in the service control panel to insure that it was running (and that the service startup was set to its default-Automatic). I would also examine the Windows event log to see if there are any WMI-related messages there. The vssadmin list writers command can give you an indication of the status of VSS on your system. Re: Error backing up eDir 8.7.3
Hi Joel, NETDB.nlm was already loaded when I checked. I have also tried reloading the modules (SMDR, TSANDS, TSAFS ...) but to no avail. I have looked in the archives of the list but only found something refering to an older NW install and an older TSM client. I was wondering if people running older versions of the eDir (like 7.x) are have a similar problem. This would help me eliminate the version of eDir as being the issue. Thanks all, Curt [EMAIL PROTECTED] 05/31/2004 6:14:59 am I believe NETDB.NLM needs to be loaded manually before the TSA's, or at least before the DSMC*. But you would not be able to backup regular files either if this was not loaded, I think Just a shot in the dark Joel Lovelien [EMAIL PROTECTED] 5/28/2004 4:37:06 PM Hi all, I've run into some issues while trying to back up a test box loaded with NW 6.5 running eDir 8.7.3. Re: Problems with 2K3 server backups
ANS1950E should refer to the Windows event log as another source for information regarding the failure. There still may be other messages in dsmerror.log itself that are germane. Regards, Mike Dile Tivoli Storage Manager Client Development Tivoli Software, IBM Software Group [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: TSM extended edition question.
Wow I didn't know that, good thing I found out now and not later. I can assume upgrading from TSM v4.2 to TSMee v5.2 is no different to upgrading to standard TSM v5.2? Re: Cristie BMR solution and TSM
Mark, I don't understand why you waste the time to tell people to go somewhere else for information. If you don't know, save yourself the time and don't respond. Sadi, If you go to Cristie's website (http://www.cristie.co.uk) you can download not only a trial version but also a pdf that walks you through the process. This will probably even give you a better idea of the interfaces than what I am going to give you. Here is a brief overview: 1) Cristie has a GUI that you use to configure a backup of the C:\ and systemstate. By default it only backs up the files on the C:\ required to restore the operating system. I suggest you backup the entire C:\ with Cristie as it will make the restore more strait forward. It is important to run the Cristie backup as often as the OS changes. You can schedule it. 2) You also use the GUI to backup the system's hardware configuration. You can choose to back this up to a floppy or a network share or both. 3) You then use TSM to backup everything else. You can if you want have TSM backup the systemstate and C:\ as well, it won't hurt the process. 4) At restore time you need to have access to the server's hardware config, either from the floppy or the network share. 5) Cristie gives you an ISO that you will burn which is a bootable Linux CD running TSM V3.1.0.6 (or maybe a newer version now). 6) You boot off of the Linux CD and run through a text based menu. You have to pick options to load your disk config and network config. 7) You then use a menu option to point to the location that has the hardware config (floppy or network). 8) You then pick a menu option that starts the restore. It contacts the TSM server and starts a restore of everything that was backed up via Cristie. This restore is done to a FAT (or FAT32 I can't remember which) partition. 9) When the restore completes it boots to windows. A pop up comes up letting you know that Cristie set the flag to convert the OS from FAT to NTFS and that another reboot is required. 10) After the next reboot the system is back up and you can now restore the rest of the drives using the TSM GUI. This process saves you the time of having to install windows before you restore the sytem which can be anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour. The latest version of Cristie is supposed to support a DR to dissimilar hardware but I have not had a chance to test that yet. This could save you even more time. Muhammad Sadat [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Dear All, I have first client requiring BMR on Windows. I know that cristie BMR is integrated with Tivoli. I have a question since I have not yet tested it out: 1- While backups have been taken by Tivoli server, and BMR media created by Cristie my understanding is as under: Cristie created media be that CD or floppy will initiate the restore process. Once temporary OS is installed , the media will contact the TSM server and start restore of data and OS files Which means all the control is in the hands of Cristie to let TSM Server know what to do. QUESTION: While it is integrated with TSM, how would we go about with the interface, the GUI in TSM. Would there be some server side component added for interfacing or is it inherent? The I/O station is already setup as Import/Export. The icon changes when it's setup as storage, i verified from the panel that it's setup as Impt/Expt. Any other ideas? My apologies - I thought from the reference to the lock icon in your original email that the padlock icon was showing as locked. This could be a hardware problem; one of my co-workers mentioned that we had a customer with at similar problem. IBM wound up working on the library. I'm not sure what was done to correct the problem. Ted
