AW: Cristie BMR solution and TSM
QUESTION: While it is integrated with TSM, how would we go about with the interface, the GUI in TSM. Would there be some server side component added for interfacing or is it inherent? Cristie´s solution is client-side only, you will not install anything aditional on the TSM server. Juraj salak

Very interesting. It sounds to me like an opportunity for Tivoli to create a white paper for us TSM admins on Best Practices in a Disk-Only TSM Environment. Re: Error backing up eDir 8.7.3
Okay, I went for the easy target and missed. I guess the next questions to ask are whether or not the server has a replica of any partitions on it (the server we backup NDS on has a replica of all the partitions in our tree) and whether or not the netware user name that you are authenticating with has any kind of rights to those partitions (we use the admin user and password to authenticate tsm to the server and tree). [EMAIL PROTECTED] 6/2/2004 4:49:46 PM Hi Joel, NETDB.nlm was already loaded when I checked. I have also tried reloading the modules (SMDR, TSANDS, TSAFS ...) but to no avail. I have looked in the archives of the list but only found something refering to an older NW install and an older TSM client. I was wondering if people running older versions of the eDir (like 7.x) are have a similar problem. This would help me eliminate the version of eDir as being the issue. Thanks all, Curt [EMAIL PROTECTED] 05/31/2004 6:14:59 am I believe NETDB.NLM needs to be loaded manually before the TSA's, or at least before the DSMC*. Re: Offsite tapes
TSM uses a copypool to do this. You can then eject the copypool tapes, mark them as not available, and keep them offsite. You will run reclaimation of both the onsite tapepool and offsite copypool separately, so do not expect there to be a 1 to 1 correlation of offsite to onsite tapes. Best of luck ... Canceling processes
Hi everybody, Seem to have a bit of a problem in that I have a couple of space reclamation jobs running on a TSM server at present. However there seems to be an issue with our 3583 tape library as although media requested for mounting is physically in the library they won't seem to mount. Tried cancelling these processes with the cancel command but after nearly 80 minutes the processes still haven't been cancelled. Was going to run a command to stur off space reclamation, but am unsure if this stops active jobs or just prevents new reclamation jobs from starting. could somone or some bodies help me out here please ? == This communication, together with any attachments hereto or links contained herein, is for the sole use of the intended recipient(s) and may contain information that is confidential or legally protected. Re: D2D backup with TSM
Hi Steve! I totally agree! We are also seriously investigating the option to put our primary pool on disk. To me, the file device class is no option, because you still have to reclaim. In my ideal TSM world I just have to take care of four things: 1) Start a database backup one or two times a day 2) Run expiration once a day 3) Backup the one and only diskpool once a day 4) Use the rest of the day for reclaiming the copypool Indeed IBM should alter the way data gets written to a diskpool so we can use it for permanent primary store. I myself will forward this as an enhancement request to my sales rep. You also stated: While they are at it, maybe an online database defrag utility would come in useful as well According to the presentation that was mentioned here yesterday, IBM is seriously looking into the possibility to migrate the TSM database to DB2. In that case, we can do online reorgs. Re: Canceling processes
My experience tells me that when you cancel either a client session or a reclimation or migration process, that TSM flags the process for cancel. Then whenever the process completes a work unit (transfering a file or glob of files, or whatever) the process itself checks to see if it is being canceled. If it has its cancel pending flag set, then the process finishes cleaning up and terminating, otherwise it continues on its marry way. I have found if a large file is being transfered, it can take over an hour for a process to terminate. ... Just my expeiences, and my thought process of how things work in 'my world' :) ... Backup Stgpool behaviour
Hello, I would like to understand how the process of backing up primary storage pool to copy storage pool works in the following situation. Suppose I've a storage pool called tapepool and a copy storage pool called disaster-recovery, both sequencial storage pools. After some data migrated to the tapepool storage pool a BACKUP STGPOOL is executed to copy this data to disaster-recovery. Some time later, new data are migrated to the tapepool again and I would like to know what will happen when the second BACKUP STGPOOL will be executed. Will TSM ask the last disaster-recovery tape volume and extend it? Or will TSM ask another tape scracth volume to disaster-recovery and fill it with only the new files that were last migrated to tapepool? Thanks in advance! Will TSM ask the last disaster-recovery tape volume and extend it? The BACKUP STGPOOL command is essentially a one-way synchronization of files from the primary pool to the copy pool. If a file exists in the primary pool but does not exist in the copy pool, the BACKUP STGPOOL command makes that copy; if a file exists in both pools, no copy is made. (There is no need for synchronization in the other direction. When a file is deleted and/or expired from a primary pool, the copy of that file in the copy pool is also automatically deleted and/or expired.) -- Mark Stapleton
Re: Backup Stgpool behaviour
Depends! If the DR tape is still in the library and still marked readwrite, TSM will append the new data to it. If the DR tape has been marked access=OFFSITE, TSM will mount a new scratch tape to write the new data. -Original Message- From: Reimer [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, June 03, 2004 4:12 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Backup Stgpool behaviour Hello, I would like to understand how the process of backing up primary storage pool to copy storage pool works in the following situation. Re: Backup Stgpool behaviour
That depends on the status of the previously used tape. If that tape can still be mounted for writing, TSM will add the new files to that tape. If the tape cannot be mounted for writing, TSM will mount a scratch tape and write the new files on it. The usual reason for the second situation is that the previously used tape was sent to an offsite vault.
Re: Offsite tapes
We do our offsite vaulting slightly differently. We run two TSM servers, each located at different locations, and use one of our TSM servers purely for offsite storage. Each server is a 'server node' of the other and backup each TSM database to the other server. After each nightly backup, we copy all the changed data from our primary storage pools and send it to the other server for offsite vaulting. This frees us from having to handle tapes and makes the process much easier. TDP for Domino restore stucks
Hi all, we need to do a point-in-time restore of all our Domino Intranet databases within one server to a different location there. The number of databases is about 350 and the total amount of data is about 40 GB. We are using TDP for Domino GUI to setup the restore. At some point the restore stucks with a message 'Waiting for TSM server' in the GUI. The ITSM server shows a 'SendW' session status for this session. 'SendW' session status would mean that the ITSM server is waiting for an acknowledgment from the TDPD client. We have tried the restore a couple of times and it stucked after different processing time and after different number of databases restored. But it stucks in any case. Does anyone have an idea why that TDPD restore won't work? Are you using client side compression Justin? That can cause bottlenecking of the client CPU. Steve. Real world change rates
Hi All, I'm trying to size TSM servers for some small remote sites that we have. In the past, with more primitive products, one of the issues has been getting staff in these locations - generally nurses - to physically change tapes. For that reason, and to avoid the cost of a library, I'm looking at a disk primary pool and tape copypool, with db back ups up the wire to a mother site. I've written a program that models the TSM backup and expiry process. Some assumptions are a small daily update rate, but a file changed yesterday is 50% likely to be changed today and 25% if it was changed in the last week. I realize in the real world that there are weekly and monthly cycles too, but I've left them out for the model for simplicity. With a 1% daily change rate, 35 day retention and no compression, I'll need 5.7 times the original data space (thats steady state average +3 standard deviations), but the number is quite sensitive to the daily rate of change 1% 5.7 1.25% 6.5 1.5%7.1 1.75% 7.9 2% 8.6 2.5%9.8 3% 10.7 5% 13.2 10% 16.9 At the moment, I don't back up any File servers, so I have no idea what a usual rate of change might be. First, can anyone comment on my assumptions. Second, can anyone share change rates for file servers with a normal load of office workers creating word processing docs, spreadsheets, etc. I understand that Netware changes attributes in situations where Windows does not, so if you could say which type of OS you are using that would be handy too. Rather than flood the list, email direct to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and I'll summarize.
