Re: How to setup GUI to access NDMP TOC for DAR?
Hi, Never seen the BA client GUI being able to display the NAS TOC, but the WEB client will do the trick. Regards, Karel -Original Message- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Robert Clark Sent: woensdag 14 juli 2004 01:47 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: How to setup GUI to access NDMP TOC for DAR? I've been testing NDMP backups using the datamover of an EMC Celerra writing to a SAN attached 3494. I needed to read between the lines in the docs a bit to figure out to set it up, but its working. But I don't see any info on how to setup a W2K B-A GUI so that it will read the TOC(table of contents) and allow for DAR(direct access restore) of the Celerra. (This seems to be how it needs to work, based on reading the current TSM Admin Guide (for AIX).) Do I need the NAS portion of the B-A client installed, even though the system I have the W2K GUI on doesn't have access to the NAS portion of the Celerra? I've added a nasnode line to the dsm.opt, but the client still doesn't show an entry for the Celerra in the GUI. Any hints or pointers to pertinent docs appreciated. Re: Client Option Sets vs. Option Files
hi, how many client are you handlig ? thanks, goran - Original Message - From: Prather, Wanda [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, July 13, 2004 11:35 PM Subject: Re: Client Option Sets vs. Option Files We use about 5 different cloptsets. One for macs, one for Win2K, one for Win2K3 servers, one for Windows desktops, one for AIX servers, etc. We put in the cloptset things that apply to all Win2K servers, (or macs, or AIX, etc.) and put in dsm.opt anything that only applies to that particular client. That seems to be the most logical thing for us. That way nobody has to remember all the annoying stuff that applies to EVERY windows system, 'cause it's all in one place. And we don't have multiple people putting a zillion machine-specific things into the cloptset that we might trip up on later. See more answers below each question: 1) Can we use just one large option set that encompasses all possible excludes and includes (since our includes are usually directory specific)? all POSSIBLE? Not sure what that would mean!! :) Duuno, probably. I haven't tried putting AIX excludes into a cloptset for a Windows sytem, for example, but I suspect it would work OK. a) If so, does that slow down backups being a larger option set file? Dunno. Our largest CLOPTSET is 55 lines, and I haven't seen any noticeable slowdown. Cloptsets are pretty harmless, have never run into any real gotcha's (except for the lack of an editor!) b) Does the server read it each time for each client that logs on? Dunno, never wondered. Probably, 'cause- you can do a q inclexcl even if you aren't doing a backup. I suspect the cloptset is small compared to the list of active backups that gets sent down for a normal incremental! c) Is it a problem if multiple servers log on at the same time? Nope, works just like you want it to. 2) Can we use both option sets and option files, where we can have the specifics added to the option file and the generic in the option set? Yep, that's what we do. It's a little weird - for options other than INCLUDE/EXCLUDE, you can specify whether the server option overrides the local dsm.opt. But for INCLUDE/EXCLUDE, ALL the includes and excludes are merged together. So you could have conflicts. So after you set up your CLOPTSET, be sure you go to a client and do q inclexcl to make sure you are getting the results you want. (We don't have that situation, since we leave in dsm.opt only the things that apply to the specific client.) Hope that helps! Wanda Prather I/O, I/O, It's all about I/O -(me)

directory management classes
Hello everyone! I was just wondering what the standard practice is for backing up directories. I know that it is recommended that you backup management classes with dirmc and specify a certain retention period or else it will get the longest retained management class in that domain, but how do you know how long to keep them? Does it get bound to a backup copy group? If so, how many versions would you keep of a directory? I guess I am a little confused on how this works. Also, if I have 5 domains, would it be ok to direct all of the directories to the same disk pool and then send them to the same offsite copy pool? Thanks in advance for any advice you might have! Re: TSM5.1.8: Can't Reclaim COPYPOOL Volume
I find you don't even have to check the tape in. If this is the typical problem lots of people run into that can be cleared by an audit, all you have to do is mark the tape READWRITE instead of OFFSITE. Re: Generating Backup Sets
The version of TSM server that we are using is 5.2.20 and the operating system is Windows 2000. In the actual help facility on the server, it states that if you do not specify a filespace data from all the clients node's backed up and active files spaces will be included in the backupset. I am using the GUI to do this. The problem is that it doesn't seem to like the NAMETYPE parameter. Other than using the command line to create the set is there anyway round this ? It would help a lot if you would specify the version of TSM server you're using. Version 5.2.2.3 web interface has the nametype as a parameter. archive problem/question
I am in the process of doing an archive for the first time of a unix file system. The entire node has done backups before, and this is the first archive of a single file system. The file system I am archiving has about 100,000 files in it; however the archive has been inspecting over 3,000,000 files and has taken over a day just to inspect. Can someone please explain the process of the first time doing an archive, and if there is a way to speed the process. Jason Cain

Re: archive problem/question
Given that you've only got 100,000 files in the directory, and it has inspected 3,000,000 files, I'd guess something is wrong. I've seen Unix systems that have inadvertently gotten circular link definitions, and TSM will blindly follow them over over again, showing this type of behaviour. You might want to set archsymlinkasfile=no on the client and try it again (but read the client manual for this first, to make sure that this does what you want it to do). -Lloyd On Wed, 14 Jul 2004 09:19:36 -0500 Cain, Jason (Corporate) [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote thusly: I am in the process of doing an archive for the first time of a unix file system. Re: Client Option Sets vs. Option Files
Hi All! Would anyone be willing to provide examples of your client option sets? I know that you will probably have certain parameters that other companies wouldn't need, but as a starting point... Thanks!

WinXP clients losing connection
Hello all. I have an interesting situation on two WinXP workstations. Instead of leaving their PCs up at night, they just restart them so they are at the logon each morning and the workstation has been rebooted. The TSM Scheduler service is running, but it seems that if you don't log into the workstation, it does not matter, it just doesn't back up. I get the message below. directory management class
Hello Everyone! I am currently creating a new TSM environment and I would like to create a disk storage pool for the directories and then make offsite copies to tape. I will have approximately 5 domains and I was wondering if it would be wrong to put all 5 server domain directories in the disk pool? Should they be seperate? I had sent out an earlier question concering directory management classes, but I haven't received any responses. Any help would be appreciated concerning this topic! In some circles, discussing the pros and cons of directory management classes approaches discussing religion and politics - everyone has an opinion and not everyone agrees with me ;) How you do your DIRMC is really an it depends answer. Re: directory management class
Joni, We have a small disk pool for the directories (200M is big for us), and the general data goes in a data pool (200G that I wish could be bigger), and a separate disk pool for Exchange backups (60G holds 4 exchange databases). We put all these to one tapepool, and do a single copypoool that is also on tape. The copypool goes off site. We have several NT type domains and back them all up to the same pools. Our TSM severs are Win2K, most clients are Win2K, NT, 2003 and a few AIX. Does that help? -Original Message- From: Joni Moyer [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, July 14, 2004 1:33 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: directory management class Hello Everyone! Re: How to setup GUI to access NDMP TOC for DAR?
We just tested this today. The TSM Client Manual for Windows has more details but we did the following: In the dsm.opt file we added: nasnodename = NetAppName (Celrra Name in your case) domain.nas = all-nas include.nas.fs MgmtClassName From there you need to stop and start the client acceptor service. When you connect to the web client http://servername:1581 you will now see your regular node name and your NAS node name. Under the NAS node you can click down through its file system. A note, we use the DIRMC option in our dsm.opt files. We registered our NAS node and our regular client in 2 different policy domains. Well, the web client kept failing with a protocol error. We looked at the dsmerror.log and it kept saying that we had an invalid mgmt class with the DIRMC option. When we connect with the dsmc command line and we didn't reciever any errors. When we issued the command q filespace -class=nas we then saw that the error was occuring when reading the NAS data. So we created the mgmtclass in the NAS domain and everything worked from there on. This was odd of course because I don't think the NAS backup needs the DIRMC but that was what we found. Everything we did was with a V5.2.3 server on Windows 2000 and the V5.2.3 client on that same windows 2000 server. Also, when you want to restore a file to an alternate location you can only choose a different volume. We wanted to restore /vol/data/user1/test.txt to /vol/data/restore. There was no option to pick a different folder only a different volume on the NetApp. We ran one test to see what would happen if you tried to restore from something that you didn't create a TOC for. You see the filespace but when you click on it it doesn't have anything below it. That is what you would expect I guess but just note that you will still see the filespace. For production we are going to backup the server using TSM server admin schedules. We realize that you can backup data from a dsmc command. We are going to test that tomorrow but at this time it doesn't look like we are going to use that. Our current backups are going to an IBM 3583 with LTO1 drives directly connected via LVD SCSI to the NetApp. We were able to spin both drives around 50 GB/hr each. We are going to test a backup to Fibre 9840 soon using an ACSLS library definition which we hope to get better throughput on. For example, given: 07/14/04 23:15:00 07/14/04 01:36:34 HE2UNX108.23- HE2UNX108 Completed 15.SOL.ANY I wonder if it should be more like this: 07/13/04 23:15:00 07/14/04 01:36:34 HE2UNX108.23- HE2UNX108 Completed 15.SOL.ANY (i.e. should the first column show 07/13/04 instead of 07/14/04). Can you review your activity log for early morning today (14 July) and check whether the timestamps in the ACTUAL START field coincide with the activity log? For example, check to see if node E2UNX108 actualy started its scheduled backup this morning at 1:36:34 AM this morning. Alternatively, I don't see a future event for this schedule, just the completed event. I'm also thinking that maybe the scheduled start time of 07/14/04 23:15:00 reflects the future event (tonight) and the actual start time of 07/14/04 01:36:34 represent last night's event, and this record is a melding of last night's and tonight's events. Let us know what your activity log shows, and if those actual start times synch up with this mornings activity log records. We're running TSM 5.2.2.0 on AIX 5.2, but I also used to see this intermittently on a 5.1 version of TSM on AIX 4.3. Has anyone ever seen this, or heard what causes it? Re: slow running windows 2000 client backup
It sounds like you may have run the trace using the TSM GUI. This trace is only produced if you are running the TSM command line version of the backup/archive client. Try running the trace again, this time using dsmc.exe instead. Also, Richard mentioned that this is a journal based backup you're attempting, and that you are getting NpOpen timeout errors. Can you send me the jbberror.log file that you have for this client? There were some recent code fixes in this error on the client, that were fixed at level 5.2.2.10. Upgrading to this level may be another thing we want to consider here. Please let me know if you still are having problems getting the trace. ADIC i2000 compared to IBM 3584, also Pathlight VX
Has anyone had the opportunity to run both the IBM 3584 library and the ADIC Scalar i2000 library? I am trying to decide between these two libraries when I replace my older LTO-1 library. Also has anyone integrated an ADIC Pathlight VX into their TSM architecture and how did that go? *** 14/7/2004 This transmittal may contain confidential information intended solely for the addressee. Re: How to setup GUI to access NDMP TOC for DAR?
Too much informative ! By the way: in the same discussion thread can we discuss my scenario which is going to be under implementation soon? 1- How would I configure TSM server to put its Primary and copy storage pools on NetApp NAS? There is no Tape library in the project. What I did was that I created a map using iSCSI Initiator on Windows 2k and then used this added hard disk of NAS to keep my database, logs and primary storage pool. What I am thinking is: that can we configure TSM directly to keep its data on NAS directly instead of adding a NAS volume on my win2k TSM Server Operating system and then use it? Also can you please elaborate a little on DataMover? Best Wishes ! Please respond to ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [EMAIL PROTECTED] .EDU We just tested this today.
