ANR2020E QUERY CONTENT: Invalid parameter - NAMETYPE and Other one is CODETYPE

2004-07-23 Thread Muhammad Sadat
Dear All,
I have just installed TSM Extended Edition 5.2.2.
Taken a backup and even restored it.
While I am trying to Query the contents of a storage pool volume I am
getting this error

ANR2020E QUERY CONTENT: Invalid parameter - NAMETYPE
ANR2020E QUERY CONTENT: Invalid parameter - CODETYPE

Whereas the same in TSM Standard Edition 5.2 was working.

Yes I understand there is some required combination like Filespace and File
Space Nmae Type and File Space Code Page Type.

In File space i put \\tivoli\d$ as seen in Clients' file spaces.
leaving the rest default as:
FileSpace Name type = Server
FileSpace Code page type = BOTH

The error:
ANR2020E QUERY CONTENT: Invalid parameter - NAMETYPE
appears when i don't give the filespace.

The error:
ANR2020E QUERY CONTENT: Invalid parameter - CODETYPE
appears when i give the filespace.

Please help!

Yup, we have

fsize = -1
cpu = -1
data = -1
rss = -1
stack = -1
nofiles = -1

for root, ulimit -a gives;

time(seconds)unlimited
file(blocks) unlimited
data(kbytes) unlimited
stack(kbytes)unlimited
memory(kbytes) unlimited
coredump(blocks) 2097151
nofiles(descriptors) unlimited

..I have not yet had an opportunity to umount/mount the filesystem (APAR
IY13763); I'll post here if it works or not when I do.

I am also hoping to run the restore to failure, then try restoring a
file using 'syscalls' (or equivalent to truss / tusc) see if that gives
any clues.

Matt.

Which ulimits are you talking about? Are -all- of them unlimited?

Specifically, have you uncapped -all- of

- memory size
- data segment size
- stack size
- VM size

? I often find I've uncapped only some of those.

I've also had some problems where I had to reset root's limits, and then
re-log-in, to make those limits effective. This is especially the case
if you
(for example) are in the habit of running some other shell after you log
in.

Problem with 3582 on Solaris 9

2004-07-23 Thread Steve Hartland
Hi all
I am having a bit of an arm wrestle getting TSM to write to LTO2 drives in a
3582 library. Config as follows:

TSM 5.2.2.0 (also tried 5.2.0.0)
Solaris 5.9
Direct fibre attached to 2 drives.
Drive firmware 38D0 (latest on web)
IBMtape (latest on web dated 19 May)

Problem description:
When trying to label tape, library mounts tape in drive, rewinds tape, and unloads it
without appearing to write to it. TSM reports I/O error with KEY, ASC and ASCQ all
zero. TSM then reports that the volume has been labeled and even checks it in. q libv
shows volser present as scratch. Backup attempt fails exactly the same as label libv
attempt.
Drive entries in output of dmesg command seem to be correct. Have tried all 8 /dev/rmt
options eg. 0st,0stc, etc. All fail
Have also tried with and without the TSM Device Driver.
Even tried configuring drive as manual and manually load tape. Still fails.

The strange thing is that write and read back using TAR command works fine on both
drives.

Hair being depleted.

Any ideas

Just ideas...

If tar works and TSM doesn't, that could indicate your ELEMENT addresses are
wrong.
That is, TSM thinks /dev/rmtx is drive 1, so it mounts the tape in drive 1,
but AIX is looking for the tape on drive 0.
Do a Q DRIVE * F=D, make sure the element addresses are correct.

The other thing I have seen cause weird I/O errors is the driver for the
HBA.
I am clueless about Solaris hardware, but I know that on Windows, the HBA
drivers are separate code and are not provided with IBMTAPE. Check to make
sure you have the latest level of driver for the HBA, AND that it is set up
for point-to-point or switched fabric, not artitrated loop.

Good luck!

Gerhard - Thanks much for taking the time to prepare the sample.

I'm not sure what to make of the empty TCP/IP Address field, which should
rightly contain the address of the client node as of the last time that it
contacted the server. It might possibly be the case that the client software
does not support providing this information to the TSM server, or it is having a
problem obtaining it. It might also relate to your anomaly...

Sometimes we see the message:

07/16/04 13:06:29 ANR1639I Attributes changed for node GYN.ECHNATON: TCP Ad
dress from to 149.148.171.22. (SESSION: 24044)

I wonder if this is appearing because a reverse lookup...

/usr/bin/host 149.148.171.22
echnaton.gyn.akh-wien.ac.at is 149.148.171.22

yields a network hostname which, within your TCP/IP domain, differs from the
client TCP/IP Name?

Subject: D2D vs. tape backups with TSM?

TSM 5.1.6.5 on 2K server. Current library is Overland Neo 4100 LTO-2.

We need more capacity in our backups, and I'm looking at faster restore
altenatives. Has anyone here used the Overland Reo 400x series, or
anything similar? It's basically SATA drives enclosed and RAID'd. And
you can configure it into LV's that emulate LTO-2 tapes.

Does any TSM'er use disk based backup? Right now the cost seems to be
twice as much as LTO-2 based. I can get a 12TB LTO-2 library for about
35K (Overland NEo 4100), yet the same capacity with disk (Reo 4000) is
about 70K. I can also buy a DAS RAID system with 4TB capacity for about
10K (Excel Meridian). What is so special about a D2D disk backup system
that makes it twice as expensive as the DAS and tape backup?

But I'd prefer not to attach a DAS to the TSM server, because I
definately want the virtual-LTO-2 functionaility, which I *think* is
part of the Reo 4000 device, right? I mean, TSM doesn't do that does it?
That must be a functionality of the D2D device, right?

Thanks,

Alex

I really need to move some nodes to different PD's so I can move their
management classes to use different, non-collocated storage pools ! I
can't move the whole PD/MC since there are some heavy-hitters I can't move
due to the size of the non-collocated storagepool.

You will lose any associated client schedules.

However, rather than create a whole new policy domain, just create some
new (non-default) management classes, and use them in the option files

What are the pitfalls/gotchas/hazards/ROT/suggestions of changing a NODES
 Policy Domain ?

If the node has centrally scheduled backups you will need to copy the
schedule to the new domain (unless a suitable schedule exists there
already) and execute a 'define association' command to associate the
node with its new schedule.

You may need to restart the scheduler process or service on the client
system. We have consistently found it necessary to do this. Reports
from other sites suggest that this is necessary only for nodes with
'schedmode prompted'.

Thanks for the quick response.

I do not understand the scope of lose any associated client schedules ?
Do you mean for the node that I am moving to the new PD ?

I thought about the MC issue. However, wouldn't this cause issues with
everything already backed-up ? I assume it would automagically rebind
everything or is this only for new backups ? What would happen do old,
inactive backups that are still ticking off the clock due to deleted
filesystems, switched systems, etc ?

However, rather than create a whole new policy domain, just create some
new (non-default) management classes, and use them in the option files
for the nodes you want to affect?

Re: Changing Policy Domains

2004-07-23 Thread Prather, Wanda
If the OLD policy domain and the NEW policy domain don't have the same
management class NAMES, and the client has files bound to the OLD management
class names that don't exist in NEW, you will get some weird messages in the
activity log when expiration runs.

If you create the new PD by copying the old PD, that shouldn't be a
problem...

What are the pitfalls/gotchas/hazards/ROT/suggestions of changing a NODES
Policy Domain ?

I really need to move some nodes to different PD's so I can move their
management classes to use different, non-collocated storage pools ! I
can't move the whole PD/MC since there are some heavy-hitters I can't move
due to the size of the non-collocated storagepool.

Re: D2D vs. tape backups with TSM?

2004-07-23 Thread Jesse Dotterer
There are some other faster restore solutions out there. With Virtual
Tape Libraries you get all the speed and reliability of D2D but with all
the functionality of tape. For example, I happen to work for a company
that provides a VTL solution which is certified by IBM-TSM. There is no
way to run reclamation on D2D so that must be done once it is
transferred to real tape. With a VTL solution, you backup to a virtual
tape library and device, run the reclamation on that, which is nearly
instantaneous and then copy to real tape via archive and that saves you
hrs and hrs of reclamation time. The other benefit is the near
unlimited amount of mount points. With backups and restores, the speed
of real tape and libraries are not longer your bottleneck.

There is a 1 hour webinar on this subject Monday 07/26. I haven't seen
it but I have signed up for it. I see an avalanche of vendor offerings
lately. I hope this can straighten out things a little.

Thanks,

Alex

Re: Changing Policy Domains

2004-07-23 Thread David E Ehresman
You will have to def assoc to add them to a backup schedule in the new
domain. If you want to move the existing data to the new storagepool
structure, you will need to do move nodedata NODE from=OLDSTGPOOL
to=NEWSTGPOOL for the primary tape pool. Your normal backup stg
processing will create the new copies in the copypool tape storagepool.
If you want to then get rid of the data in the old copypool stgpool, you
will have to delete vol discarddata=yes for each of the copypool
tapes that contain data for that node. You will need to restart the
scheduler on the node.

Re: TSM Client V5.2.2.10 for Windows 2000/2003

2004-07-23 Thread Andrew Raibeck
Just to close the loop with the rest of this list on this:

The doc that Melinda and Leif sent me both showed invalid verb received
messages, which suggested IC40841. The current APAR description isn't an
exact match, but from what I knew about the fix for that APAR, it seemed
worth a shot.

There were two facets of this APAR to fix. The first facet, which is the
pertinent one here, is fixed in 5.2.3.0 (even if the README file doesn't
mention IC40841). The second facet (regarding a successful backup
message even if the file system processing stopped prematurely), will be
fixed in an upcoming interim fix, at which time IC40841 will be shown as
fixed.

It is my understanding that 5.2.3.0 resolved the problem for Leif (at
least initial testing looked promising). If and when Melinda reads this
message, perhaps she can indicate her current status as well. But I think
this will resolve her problem, too.

So for anyone who experiences similar symptoms to those discussed earlier
in this thread: try 5.2.3.0.

Andy
