Inactive Files Rebound To New Managment Class?
Everyone, I've always read, and have seen from experience, that inactive versions of a file are not rebound to a new managment class when you modify an include in the client's configuration. Today, I saw some TSM behavior I can't explain. At the direction of our legal department, I need to retain all backups for a single server for a month or so. So, I changed an include in one system from this, include *:\...\* to this include *:\...\*nodelete I understand the database and storage ramifications of setting this up, and I thought I'd just clean up the mess later and satisfy the legal department for now. The nodelete management class is set to nolimit across the board. I ran an incremental backup thinking this would rebind only the active and new or changed files. However, when I looked in the GUI under restore, I saw that ALL the files, inactive included show up as using the "nodelete" management class. Have I merely been here too long today, or am I seeing something new here? TSM Server 5.2.2.3 TSM Client5.2.2.0 Curtis

Database restore
Seeking help on restoring a database from a file instead of a tape drive in a lab. We do not have a library or drives in our lab, but I wanting run our DR scripts to restore from a NFS and have the database to test. I have a good backup to NFS and a planfile. I cannot get the restore to look at the NFS for the database, but instead it continues to look for tape. I have defined the devclass and set the directory in the device.configuration.file. Restore WIN NT and WIN2K clients
Hello Experts, I need to restore WIN NT and WIN2K clients from scratch as part of our DR drill. I am trying to figure out the best possible way to restore, other than restoring files from backup pool to the client. I have tried restores from Backup sets and from Image backup, but every time I run into problems, when I try to restore drive C: it doesn't work, starts complaining about write protected files ( and of course the files which are open), and if I say overwrite, it still fails. So, I need a solution to restore partition C:, from backupsets or image backups. Kindly Advise. Aftab

Re: restore abending TSM server
Timothy This sounds similar to a problem we had last month. We were trying to restore 2.7m files back to an NT client, but found that the restore failed after about 1.5m files and took down the server with it. In our case, the problem was APAR 39700. This describes certain situations in which the TSM client can crash the server. However the IBM support guys suggested it can apply to any scenario in which one session of a multi-session restore fails unexpectedly. The result of such a failure is to bring down the TSM server. By trial and error, we got around it by only running a single session and upgrading the client from 5.1.6 to 5.1.7. In fact, doing one or the other would probably have worked. The documentation for APAR 39700 also describes how to use a client trace flag to disable No Query Restores as a work around. This may not be the same as your situation, but thought I'd share it with you just in case. Regards Neil Schofield Yorkshire Water Serviced Ltd. Are you drinking enough water? How to remove a single file from a TSM backup tape volume
Hello, Another question... Background: TSM Storage Manager: Version 5.2.3.4 AIX OpSystem: 5.2.2.0 I have a customer that is requesting that 2 files be permanently removed from TSM(classified type file)...including tape backup(which will be on tape for 180 days). Now I found the technote on Tivoli website - of the How to delete the file from tapeHas anyone tried that suggestion? I also checked the adsm.quickfacts sight... Search on ' File, selectively delete from *SM' -unsupported method, which looks like the IBM suggestion above. and the standard method. I am gonna try the standard method(seems like less steps too) but was curious if anyone tried the IBM suggestion? Re: Restore from 250 GB of 2 000 000 files in 1 day
Personally I'd look into processing that file system with an image backup. A way to look at that would be "Which can you count to faster, 2,000,000 or 1 ?" Depending on the data, 250 GB would compress down to 83 GB (if we assume 3/1 client compression) and if the client & server processors are newer models running TSM 5.2 code, I would expect that to be processed in about 4 hours and if it doesn't compress at all, about 3 time that or 12 hours. (both backups and restores with a single process) All that depends heavily on the hardware but P630's with just 2 CPU's would probably produce such results. (and you are doing the backup and restore of the file system from the actual host that it physically resides on, correct?) Since creating an image backup requires a static environment for the duration of the backup, you could always look into cutting BCV's, mounting those up to an alternate processor and letting that alternate processor create the image backup... then the re-sync of the BCV's to get you ready for the next backup cycle wouldn't take very much time. Re: *******Spam*********:Re: Restore from 250 GB of 2 000 000 files in 1 day
Hi Michael Are you suggesting doing both image and normal progressive backups? The issue with using image backup is that it eliminates the possibility of file-level-restores. This means that you have to utilize both technologies(image and progressive) to have both the fast restore and the ability to do file-level-restores. This also means storing alot of data in your TSM server. Assuming you have TSM 5.2, why don't you use imagebackup and incr? This will shorten backup and restoretimes. If you use incremental backup only, forget about the restoretimes. I know of restoretimes of 1GB/h in an environment with ~3.5 mio. directories and and ~2.5 mio. files (~100GB of data), DASD. -- Michael Prix "What is this talk of 'release'? Assuming you have TSM 5.2, why don't you use imagebackup and incr? This will shorten backup and restoretimes. If you use incremental backup only, forget about the restoretimes. I know of restoretimes of 1GB/h in an environment with ~3.5 mio. directories and and ~2.5 mio. files (~100GB of data), DASD. -- Michael Prix "What is this talk of 'release'? Restore from 250 GB of 2 000 000 files in 1 day
Hallo, is its possible to restore 250 GB ( two million files) within a day? Its an NSF mounted filesystem. Can parallel restore increase the throughput by an NSF-mouted filesystem. The filesystem is mounted from a EMC cellera and symmetrix. The backup time was with 13 hours with parallel sessons. Then the data will be migrated the LTO1 tapes in an IBM 3584. Has any one experience with restore off many little files with high throughput. best regards Ralf Behrendt mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Ueber das Internet versandte E-mails koennen leicht verfaelscht oder unter fremdem Namen erstellt werden.
