I did it in 1 go: upgrade AIX and install latest tsm server. Copy the needed
files (db ,log, dmdserv.opt, ...) and start dsmserv with dsmserv upgrade. All
went flawless and it is still running.

I thought that you can not clean a lto drive if it isn't needed. You can put
the cleaning tape in, but it will not clean the drive.
Each cleaning tape also has a counter so you can only use it a few times (most
tapes can be used 50 times).

This certainly suggests a cause of failure (can't establish connectivity,
in so many words)... is there some other specific information you would
like to see in the message text or explanatory information? One immediate
improvement comes to mind: the "User Response" section could suggest
checking the connection between servers.

As to the hung sessions: I would agree that those should not occur. If I
remember correctly, you've already got a PMR open for this... support
should continue to work with you to address that issue.

Upgrading AIX from 4.3.3 ML 10 to AIX 5.2

2004-11-29 Thread Peter Hadikin
Hello TSMers

We are planning to finally update the AIX version on our RS6000 that is
running our TSM server. Currently we are at AIX 4.3.3 ML 10 and we are
planning to install AIX 5.2. The TSM server on this box is sitting at
TSM 5.1.5.4. Can we simply upgrade to AIX 5.2 and leave the TSM server
at 5.1.5.4 for the time being? Would it be beneficial to move to some
level of the TSM 5.2.x server? If we are moving to TSM 5.2.x, can we do
a one step migration from TSM 5.1.5.4 or are there multiple steps to the
upgrade?

Any info or experiences would be most appreciated,

Take care,
Peter

My original LTO-1 library went back to the leasing company after three
years of use, averaging about 2 TB of data per DAY across 10 drives. In
that time period, we clocked 11 uses of one cleaning tape. All eleven
were manually triggered from the operator panel (move tape from slot to
drive) to check out tape drives after repair/replace in the first two
months (before we got the proper microcode installed on the drives).

In other words -- 3 years, 2 TB/day * 365 days *3 -- and the drives

Zoltan,

You need to examine the log file or output of Data Protection for SQL.
RC=1912 means a VDS creation error. This happens when
Data Protection for SQL has asked to create a VDI connection
to the SQL Server in order to perform a backup or restore,
and the creation failed. The VDI error log and or SQL Server
log may also provide more information on why this creation failed.

If this is the first time running this on this machine,
it is most likely a permissions issue. If this was working
and then stopped and has not corrected itself, then something
else may be going on. In the latter case, a trace will
provide additional information.

You should look into whether the schedule type is Polling

GMT offset: your 5 hour value makes one think that is a

Re: size of active vs. inactive?

2004-11-29 Thread Curtis Stewart
My $0.02.

I guess if you are doing a whole bunch of LAN Free stuff or NDMP backups
it can be nice since you can just define the drives as you need them and
not worry too much about drive contention (the throughput requirements for
such a large LAN Free environment would make me skeptical about using a
VTL though). Other than that I can't think of any really compelling reason
to do it. Put it this way, we were offered a VTL with about 35TB of disk
from one of the big storage vendors "free", and turned it down. After
doing some research, it just didn't seem to fit in our environment. There
wasn't a lot it did, I couldn't do with TSM and a bunch of disk.

Oh, not sure how much of a benefit this is, but they do claim 3:1
compression, something a TSM disk or file device won't do itself. If
client side compression isn't an option for you that may be one upside of
these systems.

I have a partial resolution to my export/import problem. I eventually

Once the network configuration was fixed I was able to do the

I would not expect the TSM server code to be able to do server to server
exports without network connectivity, but I would expect it to do a
decent job of reporting the cause of the failure, and I would expect
it to do a decent job of cleaning up after the failure (that is, not
leaving administrative sessions that are impossible to cancel).

I think the only way you'll be able to do this is via a rather long-running
select.

You might get some value out of doing your select one node at a time, that
will decrease the database blockages inferred by the query...

unable to define path

2004-11-29 Thread Tim Piqueur
Hi,

We have a 3583 library with two LTO2 drives. For some reason one drive became
unavailable (TSM server running on Linux). Since a reboot of both the server
and the library didn't help I deleted the path and the drive from TSM.
I then tried to define a new drive with the following command:

tsm: RADIOHEAD>define drive 3583TL LTO01 serial=autod online=yes element=256
ANR8404I Drive LTO01 defined in library 3583TL.

So far so good it seems, but when I want to define a path, this is the result:

tsm: RADIOHEAD>define path RADIOHEAD LTO01 srctype=server desttype=drive
device=/dev/IBMTape0 library=3583TL online=yes
ANR8420E DEFINE PATH: An I/O error occurred while accessing drive LTO01.
ANS8001I Return code 15.

Although it seems that the drive is online and properly connected to the
server, so I think that I can exclude any hardware problem:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] bin]# cat /proc/scsi/scsi

Vendor: ADAPTEC Model: RAID-5 Rev: 3A0L

I verified the element number of the drive but I am really sure that it is the
same as before. I also ran IBMtapeconfig with the following output:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] bin]# IBMtapeconfig
Creating IBMtape special files
 major number: 254
 Attached devices: 0 1

I also ran some tests with IBMtapeutil but they all seemed to be successful.

Several reboots of both the server and the library didn't help either.

So I assume that there is an error somewhere inside TSM but I really can't find
it.

Anyone who has any ideas?

Thank you!

We recently had a similar problem with our zSeries Linux server. It turned
out not to be a drive problem as such. Mount requests sent to the 3494
library manager include a drive identifier based on the hardware serial
number of the controller. The mechanism by which the library manager
corelates the drive identifiers with physical locations in the library
depends on RS-422 (a relative of the more familiar RS-232 protocol)
connections from the library manager to the drives. In our case, the
errors we saw were traced to lack of RS-422 connectivity between the
library manager and the drive. The Field Engineer checked for
installation problems such as loose plugs and then ordered replacements
for both the RS-422 cable and the library manager board it was plugged
into. Once the replacements arrived he was able to fix the problem
almost immediately. I don't know which component turned out to be the
culprit.

You might want to try using the mtlib command to mount a tape. When I
did this, the attempt failed, but the resulting error message gave a
better idea of the nature of the problem than the corresponding TSM
messages.

Well, not "obviously" until you do the environmental problem analysis to
find out what the problem *actually* is: an OS error log may reveal that
there is a disk situation at play - which might be something as resolvable
as a loose cable or failed power supply, meaning that the disk and its
data may be intact but currently unreachable.
If all is well in the hardware and you have to satisfy someone's odd
insistence that the data be in TSM storage, an image copy may be able
to simply capture bits. Of course, without resolution of the fundamental
issue involved here, the data would likely be pointless as a later
restoral candidate, unless the intention was future forensic analysis
rather than usage.

Another alternative is to identify the owning application and see if *it*
can read some, if not all, of the data. Perhaps that application has a
feature that allows it to copy data from the file to another file,
affording the opportunity to rescue as much of the data as possible.

As a blanket statement, I'd have to answer "false".

I am not personally aware of any problems in current code (and this
doesn't mean that, hypothetically, there aren't any), but historically TSM
server development is fully aware of past problems.

If you have specific problems with SUMMARY table information, then I
recommend that you:

- Consider the most current server maintenance. Check the README file to
see if any known problems are fixed in that level.

- Search the TSM support page
(http://www-306.ibm.com/software/sysmgmt/products/support/IBMTivoliStorageManager.html)
for problems that match your symptoms.

- Open a problem with IBM support.

With that said.. what problems are you currently experiencing with the
SUMMARY table, and which TSM server are you running?

So have your IBM/CE checks the microcodes.

Hi Daniel,

That was what I expected. I was only wondering if I missed something.

But I also found this article:

"Tivoli Storage Manager only supports restoring a database using the same
level of server code (version, release, modification) that was used to
create the

you cannot restore a Tivoli Storage Manager Version 4.2.1.0 or 5.1.5.0

Hi Henrik

In this scenario, I expected that he wouldnt upgrade the software level on
his existing servers... Therefore he would be forced todo an upgrade db on
the new server after doing the database restore.

But thats correct. He could aswell upgrade his existing servers to the
correct level before doing the database backup in preparation of the move.

Hi,

Why do you need to do an upgrade db after a restore? You restore your db
to
the same server level, right? And then upgrade..

"Be aware that you will need to do an dsmserv upgradedb after you have
restored your databases."

Hi Lars-Erik

Easiest way would be to back up the databases on both machines and then
restore the databases back to the new hardware.

The LTO-1 tapes should have no problems operating with the new LTO-2
drives. However, you will not recieve the larger capacity of the
LTO-2(200/400GB). They will still operate with their native
capacity(100/200GB). You will however get higher throughput using your new
LTO-2 drives with your old LTO-1 tapes. I believe the throughputrate is
somewhere at 25MB/s.

When you have your new hardware up an

That's a common condition when the drive is defective - I have a drive
doing that currently.
Your posting does not indicate that your OS error log has been examined
to gather the detail data for analyzing the problem for isolating the
