How to get the best use from TSM with a large disk?

2005-05-06 Thread Krzysztof WOZNIAK
Dear All,

My TSM backup server holds approx 15Tb of data collected from some 80
servers.
The twin 4560 library holds 56 tapes.
Approx. 150 tapes are offline.
The primary disk storage is 120Gb.
As you can imagine reclamation takes quite a lot of time as the system
become overloaded since it was put in action almost 2 years ago.

The greatest complaint is that restore, unlike backup, is not instant.

To fix the problem my management is about to purchase 5Tb of disks.

We only had small disks up to now and it seems that a large disk is an
entirely different game.
It does not seem to be very obvious how to get the best value out of it.

Had I had enough disks to put all data on disk could simply move tape
system to the disk.
Had I had larger library I would simply put all tapes online.
But in my case I face a mixed disk tape system.

As I am not so keen on reinventing the wheel, I would like to ask few
quiestions, like:

Where can I find materials about TSM configuration for a large disk/
large disk + tape ?

I am sure that somebody from ASDM-L may have a suitable experience.
Would you be so kind to share it with me and provide me with some
pointers?

There are special mechanism to regroup data - like backup sets and
co-location (and maybe something I missed) Would they be of any use in
my future setup ?

With regards,

hi tsm'ers ! UPGRADE question

2005-05-06 Thread goc
hi all, i'll first explain the situation and then tell you what we want do ,
i appreciate every
reply and help you offer
TSM 5.2.4.0 on pSeries 640
2x8 port switch
LTO library L32 with 12 LTO1 drives
(and the same configuration on DR site)
as we approached the capacity of this one LTO library we have now choice
to upgrade the whole thing
option 1. the simplest
- add D52 (driveless) frame filled with 400 LTO1 tapes
option 2. my proposition
- replace 9 LTO1 drives with 9 LTO3 drives + additional D52 frame filled
with LTO3 cartridges
why 9 ? well i thought because we have a lot of archive data on LTO1 tapes
and considering the long expiration policies i think some day the LTO1 tapes
will get used to delete the stuff
i'm not sure but think that LTO3 drive cannot write LTO1 tapes am i right ?
i cant find on ibm site the interoperability matrix for LTO(drives/tapes)
,can someone point ? thanks
so if LTO3 drive can read from LTO1 tape , can LTO1 drive read LTO3 tape ?
(of course with LTO1 drive native speed)
(this is acceptable)
furthermore , one idea (not mine) was to install LTO3 drives and tapes and
migrate the whole thing to LTO3 tapes,
but what then with all the empty LTO1 tapes and 3 LTO1 drives ? :-)
boy ! i'm really confused and my chiefs want some solution proposition
one of them wants to stay in-line with new technologies and one is
for the simplest solution ... me ? i'm for new technology but i really in
this
moment don't know how it will look like and how the whole thing should
be done, and what and how is the smartest way to do this thing.
thats's pretty much it, i will surely find some other question as time goes
by
and i'll ask them here coz this community is my only reference for questions
like this, coz i know from experience ibm sales personel is really confused
when we talk to them about our needs, and for tech guys from ibm they
got itchy all over when i call them on the phone ;-) LOL
nevermind ...
thanks for every letter you will write in reply

Yes, is possible, we have a couple installations running where the same
library supports both backup products, with IBM3584, and with L700. I am
pretty sure you can do it with all the large scale libraries provided that
the library supports true sharing and zoning.

I was wondering if anyone out there is, or has dealt with this.

We know that it is physically possible to attach 2 TSM servers to a library
and run each independently of the other. The question I have is, is it
possible to run 2 systems to the same library, knowing each will have their
own dedicated drives, when one is running TSM and the other Veritas?

Thanks for any info you can provide,

Re: Incremental skipping filesystems?

2005-05-06 Thread Warren, Matthew (Retail)
Hallo,

And thanks for the suggestions, they prompted us to investigate a few
avenues.

We tracked it down to an issue with the 5.2.0.0 client on Solaris.
Upgrading to 5.2.2.0 has fixed the problem - although I am still trying
to find a page on ibm.com describing the fault.

Thanks,
Matt.

Hmm, then indeed that does seem to be strange. The fact that the
filespaces don't even show up in a q fi is really strange.

By the looks of your filesystem /home is not an NFS mount, so
they really should be backed up. /home is not a link out to somewhere
else it is? It doesn't looks like it is, as it shows up in a 'df'
command.

Strange

What about if for grins and giggles if you put a DOMAIN
all-local statement in your dsm.opt file and try it... Heck, perhaps
even putting that line in after each SERVERNAME statement and trying
it...

It's a long shot, but perhaps it might behave differently

We aren't using client option sets, but good idea I hadn't thought of
them.
The dsm.sys and dsm.opt are linked as follows;

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root other 50 May 4 21:00 dsm.sys -
/app/scripts/config_files/tsm/rhine-e.PROD_dsm.sys
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root other 50 May 4 21:00 dsm.opt -
/app/scripts/config_files/tsm/rhine-e.PROD_dsm.opt

These files exist, and are the ones I have posted.

Hmm.. I vaguely remember there was a known issue that could cause this
behaviour, and I think specifically on Sun machines, but I havent turned
up anything searching ibm.com yet...

Perhaps you are hitting a client options set on the TSM server?

QUERY CLOPTS

On Solaris clients, you might also check to make sure that the
TSM config files in /opt/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin directory are properly
linked to the files out in /usr/bin. If they are unique files in each
location, you can get some strange things.

This is how they should look:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root other 16 Aug 25 2004 dsm.sys -
/usr/bin/dsm.sys
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root other 16 Aug 25 2004 dsm.opt -
/usr/bin/dsm.opt

If not, perhaps a copy of your dsm.sys, the dsm.opt and the
inclexcl file might help.

Hallo *SM'ers

Client o/s, SOLARIS SunOS 5.9
Dsmc 5.2.0.0
Dsmserv 5.2.2.3 on AIX 5.2.0.0

It appears incremental backup is missing/skipping filesystems

Firstly, I am assured there were definitley many directories and files
under /home/ last night when the backups ran...

The dsmc log for the backups say's this;

IBM Tivoli Storage Manager
Command Line Backup/Archive Client Interface - Version 5, Release 2,
Level 0.0

Incremental backup of volume '/'

Incremental backup of volume '/etc/mnttab'

Incremental backup of volume '/var'

Incremental backup of volume '/var/run'

Incremental backup of volume '/home'

Incremental backup of volume '/app/genrat'

Incremental backup of volume '/app/mine1'

... etc

/home is definitley listed. There are no further mentions of /home in
the logfile. Approx 130,000 files inspected, 2,500 backed up. So very
possible nothing had changed in home, hence no further mention in the
log. (or, /home was totally empty? But I am asssured this is not the
case)

Now, firstly, firing up the web client and browsing the files available
for restore, all files are listed under the single filesystem name '/'
so I assume /home is a dir of /, rather than a separate mountpoint, but
then, why would TSM list it as a domain for backup at the beginning of
the incremental?

Secondly, in the GUI, there is not an entry for /home

Query backup from the command-line shows exactly the same thing -
nothing.

The following select statement on the TSM server produces the output
that follows;

tsm: RUTLANDselect * from backups where node_name='RHINE-E' and hl_name
like '%home%'

The server can perform simultaneous write to copy storage pools for the
 following operations:
o Backup and archive operations by Tivoli Storage Manager
backup-archive clients or application clients using the Tivoli
  Storage Manager API.
o HSM migration operations by Tivoli Storage Manager for Space

o Import operations that involve copying exported file data from

Simultaneous writing is NOT supported when migrating data between storage

Subject: Migration - Primary and Copy Pool

Hi Fellows,

The environment:

TSM Server 5.1.9.5, AIX 4.3.3 ML 9
Two 3580 LTO1 SCSI tape drives (manual)
Both drives defined on the same library.

A small costumer used to backup their data directly to tape storage
pools, primary and copy, simultaneously coping the data to both storage pools.
Until that point nothing weird, just define the copystg option on the primary
and everything works like a charm. The strange bahavior appeared when, for
performance reasons, they decided to backup their data to disk and than migrate
it to tape, the migration to tape works fine, but only goes to one of the
storage pools (the primary). Since, nothing has changed on the tape storage
pools what the hell is going on? It seems like some limitation for the
migration process, but it should work. At least this is what the manuals show.
I've checked the migprocess option to ensure that there was only one
process, but nothing changed.
The backup stg command works fine.
Am I missing something?

Atenciosamente,

3494 at DR Recovery Site

2005-05-06 Thread David E Ehresman
I got to thinking about 3494 category codes in the middle of the night when I
should have been sleeping (can you tell my DR test is soon?).

If I load the DR 3494 with my copypool tapes and let the 3494 do an audit
operation while I am restoring my tsm machine from a sysback tape, will all the
tapes be in Insert category? The recovery scripts that DRM prepares do not
include any checkin libvol statements. Aren't I going to have to checkin all
those tapes before they can be used? The tsm db that I will be restoring won't
have any of them in libvol because they are all offsite.

Re: Operational Hourly Monitors

2005-05-06 Thread William Boyer
If you go in and look at some of the queries already defined by Tivoli in the
default hourly monitor it shows that the SQL WHERE
clause compares the date/times BETWEEN '%s and '%s' . I've used this syntax
in my own queries and it works fine. I've never found
any documentation on it, just a little reverse engineering. Since you can
refresh the monitor on either the current time or the

I'm trying to set up an operational monitor that will alert our TSM operators

shelf is where the archive tapes are stored and they are required from time to
time for collocation.

The hourly script will check the activity log for ANR8765I. My problem is
setting the query to only search the last hour of the
activity log. I can make it check the previous day but am stumped by this past
hour report.

Here is my TSQL script:
select msgno, message from actlog where msgno=8765 and
date(date_time)=current_date - 1 day

I've tried to adjust this script to query just the last hour of the activity
log but to no avail.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

But for the short period you are talking about, can't you do one or more
of
1) Add extra disk storage
2) Step up reclamation
3) Look at tape reuse delay
4) Check whether you have any filespaces not accessed for a long time. Are
their backups still required?

Sorry if this is a FAQ..

I'm trying to generate reports from our TSM database that are
older than 1 month old and I am not finding any info.

Is this the time retention on the DB?

How do I find out?

You are searching the activity log, which has a user defined retention
period. You can set the retention using the command:
set actlogretention ##
Where ## is the number of days to retaining records.
You can see your current settings by issuing a query status
command.

I disagree with John's recommendation to step up tape reclamation to get
over a short term lack of scratch tapes unless your pending re-use delay
will expire before the tapes arrive.

My inclination would be to stop all reclamations until the new tapes
arrive. Reclamation gives you a benefit in the future (ie after the
REUSEDELAY), but in the short term may actually cost you scratch tapes.

Rather than allow the backups to fail, have you thought of deleting your
oldest pending media and TSM database backups?

I have to agree for off-site reclamation. With reclamation running you
can take up additional tapes that are off-site giving you even less to
work with at the present time. Reclamation for your local tapes(on-site
tapepool) should help gain back tapes.

Re: Out of scratch tapes?

2005-05-06 Thread Sung Y Lee
Couple of things comes to my mind.

Without knowing what your TSM environment is like it's hard to say..
however, these similar situation might happen.
Out of scratch tapes. Disk pools fill up to 100%. Migration from disk to
tape pools fail.. tape copies from onsite to offsite fail.
TSM database backup fails. Also if you are into faith, praying might help
to.

If you are out of scratch tapes with all of your tapes utilization at 100%,
then you are SOL.
If you are out of scratch tapes with some tapes with less than 100%
utilization then you have some hope.

What can you do.. couple of things

1)select volume_name,stgpool_name,access,pct_reclaim,times_mounted from
volumes where stgpool_name='ur onsite tape pool' order by pct_reclaim
desc

Take highest reclaimable value and perform move data

2) Keep expiration going

3) Stop drm vaulting temporary if you are doing daily DRM.

4) Keep fewer TSM database backups say, you are keeping them onsite for 7
days.. u can try to reduce this # by say keep for 3 days or so.

TSM/Veritas on the same library

2005-05-06 Thread Gill, Geoffrey L.
Since there was only one response I think I need to give a bit of info to
help with why I'm asking the question.

We have TSM and Veritas here. Not something I wanted but its here. Currently
each reside on their own libraries mainly because one is LTO2(Veritas) and
the other a 3494(TSM). I'd like to start moving TSM LTO this year. We are in
the midst of standing up a DR site and I'm trying to see how we can bundle
this together. So instead of standing up 2 libraries I'd like to stand up
one large enough to handle both the Veritas and TSM backups. I'd like to add
on to what we have here if they could live together nicely.

The 3494 we have is currently shared by the mainframe and 2 TSM servers. We
already know we have to bring up a 3494 at the DR site for the mainframe/TSM
and another for Veritas. I would like however to send part of the 3494 we
have now to handle portions of the TSM backups along with getting hardware
for the IBM. If we stood up an LTO library here to start migrating off the
3494 that is doable. I would then need LTO at the DR site for TSM but would
like to see if a single large enough unit would suffice.

So my original question is still, can a LTO library be shared by both
systems provided they each have their own dedicated drives? Has anyone done
this or think it can be done?

Any information, be it in the form of links to articles or direct knowledge
would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Geoff

Re: TSM/Veritas on the same library

2005-05-06 Thread Steven Harris
I've gotta ask Geoff,
Why, with a 3494 and LTO library would you move TSM to LTO? My first option
would be to move veritas to the 3494.
3494 is industrial strength and plays well in multi host and multi
application environments. Use 3592 drives and you'll have capacity to burn.
Also, second-hand frames to provide additional storage are quite
economical. Second-hand is viable here - what can go wrong with a dumb
storage rack? and you'll have no trouble getting IBM maintenance coverage
for it if that is important to you.
