TSM 5.2 and supported Solaris OS

2005-08-11 Thread Farren Minns
Hi all

Can someone tell me where I can find information on supported Solaris
operating systems. I'm looking to move to TSM 5.2 in the near future and
would like to move to Solaris 2.10 but I can't find information on whether
this is supported.

Many thanks

ISC inst problems /

2005-08-11 Thread goc

hi all,
i'm installing ISC on AIX 5.3 ml2 and experiencing some problems,
i installed once for testing purposes on AIX 5.2 ml3 with no problems,
i really dont understand java and things so i confused when looking at log
files for some clues why installation failed,
i paste below two files so someone can help me :-)
thanks

goran

PS: yes i uninstalled it manualy by the book , but i dont understand
from the Kenneth Owin Michael Sisco ppt Most commonly, all
vpd.properties are not edited.

and i found is some installation log something with SOAP and that 8249 port
is already in use which is strange considering it's a newly installed
machine with 12 running processes :-)

thanks

Robert,

The only other thing I can think of right now is to have you start a migration
and let it run until it fails. Then send me a copy of the activity log for
both the source and the target servers that cover that time period. I will
look through it and see if I can see anything in it.

I will try to get back to you today on it, but it might be tomorrow before I
can respond.

Robert,

You have a naming problem. Your storage pool name is I2000_server1, but your
copy destination is sending it to a storage pool called I2000_postback!

Update your copydestination in the archive copygroup of the default management
class for the standard domain and I think that will fix it.

1 of 3 TOR reports refuses to generate?

2005-08-11 Thread Steve Schaub
I use Tivoli Operational Reporting (running on tsm client 5.3.0.14 under
win2003) to generate our daily action reports on 3 TSM instances (TSM server
5.2.2.0 5.2.4.3).
Today, one of the three came out with an error.
I have tried rerunning it manually through the console after
stopping/starting all TSM related services, but no luck.
I haven't been able to find anything that matches this error on IBM's web
site.
Has anyone else seen this, or at least know where I can look to find out
exactly what file it is choking on?

Moving an existing TSM server to new server and library

2005-08-11 Thread Ray Louvier
Hi all, we have Win2000 server running TSM ver 5.2.3. What I have been
asked to do is move this to a new server running win 2003. The library
will go from a dell 128T to an ADIC 24. I looks like it would be
possible as long as the TSM server kept the same name and we checked all
the tapes out of the 128T and checked into the ADIC 24. And just
restored the DB. Granted all the disk lay out is similar. Is this a
correct assumption or is there something else that needs to be done.

Thanks

Hi All,

AIX 5.2, TSM Server 5.2.0.0 (working on an upgrade), Client 5.2.0.0,
domino client 5.1.5.0, domino 6.5.4

My predecessor set up this environment using AIX srcmgr facilty to run a
dsmc sched process for each domino instance - there are 8 on this
machine, and they run under the root id. The domino instances themselves
have a different unix id for each instance. Each instance is logically
separate with its own file systems, domino binaries and a tsm directory
that contains domdsm.cfg, dsm.opt, logs and a security directory
containing the TSM.PWD file for the instance. We can literally export a
couple of volume groups and import them elsewhere to move a domino
instance to another AIX lpar.

Domino backups are scheduled using a command schedule, and in the script
the backup is run under the unix ID for the instance.

The problem is that when PASSWD GENERATE does its thing, the TSM.PWD
file is deleted and re-created with the new password. This is done by
the scheduler process and so the new TSM.PWD file has root ownership.
Thus the backups fail as they can't access the new encrypted password.

So, I've tried to fix this by running dsmc sched as the domino user, but
I get

ANS1817E Schedule function can only be run by a TSM authorized user.

I've set up a TSM admin with node ownership, and I can run dsmc command
line as the domino user, but not the scheduler. dsmcad won't work
either.

Is there any solution other than running everything as root or resorting
to cron? I'd like to domino admins to be able to check logs and don't
want them to have root access, but using separate users also has nice
safeguards when it comes to restoring in the right environment.

TIA

Re: 1 of 3 TOR reports refuses to generate?

2005-08-11 Thread Steve Schaub
Actually, we are putting TRT in sometime soon (by our AIX guys).
I use TOR because it was relatively quick easy to setup, and I didn't have
time to go through the purchasing process.

One thing I do miss from my previous company was a custom report we
generated daily on all session activity, that allowed me to both filter and
sort the data - was really useful for spotting nodes with low network xfer
rates, for example, or easily listing the top ten longest running backups,
or seeing only restore sessions from TDP nodes, etc - basically a limited
but still very useful adhoc query tool. There's nothing equivilant in eith
TOR or TRT. I can send you an example if you would be interested in seeing
it. Someday I'll have time to convert the rexx program from mainframe to
windows, but not today.

Subject: dsmerror.log and dsmsched.log changes in 5.3 windows client

We have our Windows clients run a postschedulecmd that ftp the client's
dsmerror.log and dsmsched.log to a central location.

We've just noticed some of the Windows 2003 clients at level 5.3.05 are
failing to ftp the files (we get error dsmerror.log:No such device or
address).

If we stop the TSM Client Schedule Service (and maybe the Client
Acceptor) then we are able to transfer the files via ftp.

It appears that the 5.3 client on Windows 2003 keeps these files open
when the services above are running. We can copy them when the services
are running using windows copy but cannot ftp them using windows ftp.

We have two Windows 2003 clients at 5.3.05 that are able to ftp the
files and about 4 that cannot at the moment. We are trying to see the
differences between these servers but have not been able to figure it
out yet. It nearly seems at this time that perhaps some hotfix isn't
allowing windows ftp to put a file that is open!

Steve,
When I ran into this, it only occured after the password expiration time
was exceeded. Is this the case for you as well? If so, set password expiration
to 0, and the password file to the Domino user and group ID, and all should be
fine (works here anyway). Scott

Hi All,

AIX 5.2, TSM Server 5.2.0.0 (working on an upgrade), Client 5.2.0.0, domino
client 5.1.5.0, domino 6.5.4

My predecessor set up this environment using AIX srcmgr facilty to run a dsmc
sched process for each domino instance - there are 8 on this machine, and they
run under the root id. The domino instances themselves have a different unix id
for each instance. Each instance is logically separate with its own file
systems, domino binaries and a tsm directory that contains domdsm.cfg, dsm.opt,
logs and a security directory containing the TSM.PWD file for the instance. We
can literally export a couple of volume groups and import them elsewhere to
move a domino instance to another AIX lpar.

Domino backups are scheduled using a command schedule, and in the script the
backup is run under the unix ID for the instance.

The problem is that when PASSWD GENERATE does its thing, the TSM.PWD file is
deleted and re-created with the new password. This is done by the scheduler
process and so the new TSM.PWD file has root ownership. Thus the backups fail
as they can't access the new encrypted password.

So, I've tried to fix this by running dsmc sched as the domino user, but I get

ANS1817E Schedule function can only be run by a TSM authorized user.

I've set up a TSM admin with node ownership, and I can run dsmc command line as
the domino user, but not the scheduler. dsmcad won't work either.

Is there any solution other than running everything as root or resorting to
cron? I'd like to domino admins to be able to check logs and don't want them
to have root access, but using separate users also has nice safeguards when it
comes to restoring in the right environment.

TIA

Problems with BMR on W2K (missing DLL's after restore)

2005-08-11 Thread Mike Hagery

Hello,

TSM server Windows2000, TSM 5.2.2.0.
TSM client Windows2000 Advanced, TSM 5.2.2.0, Exchange-mail server

After a succesfull back-up of all local drives (C, D, E, F + system objects)
and a full back-up with ITSM_for_Mail (TDP for Exchange), we tried to do a
full restore of the system.

We get some problems after restoring the operating system and I hope someone
can point me to the right direction.

These are the followed steps:
- Basic installation W2KSP3 (same SP as installed during back-up)
- Server renamed to original name, not joined in domain
- IP config modified for connection with TSM-server
- Installation TSM client
- Modified dsm.opt
- Restore C-partition
NO REBOOT
- Restore System Objects
- Reboot

The system reboots well, but a few seconds after the log-menu appears there
also appears two popup error-messages concerning 'Unable to locate DLL' for
inetinfo.exe:
IisRTL.dll could not be located in path

and the other-one for AntigenIMC.exe (virusscanner):
Exstrace.dll could not be located in path

If we compare some dll's with another Exchange server the following were
missing:
iisext.dll
iismap.dll
iisrstap.dll
iisreset.exe

It is not possible to start the IIS-service manually.

I find this document:
DCF Document ID: 1164812 - IBM Tivoli Storage Manager: Modified
Instructions for Complete Restores of Windows Systems: Bare Metal Restore
(BMR), System State Restore, Windows System Object Restore

But,
After doing the restore again with the commands out of the document:
- dsmc restore {SYSTEM OBJECT}\winnt\system32\catroot\*
%systemroot%\system32\ -sub=yes -rep=all - dsmc restore
%systemdrive%\* -sub=yes -rep=all
- dsmc restore systemobject

I still get the same popup-message about the missing DLL's.

If I do a select on the server the mentioned files are all in the
backup-table. If I do some queries on the client (q sysfiles, q
systemobject, show systemobject) everything is there.

Every tip is welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Problems with BMR on W2K (missing DLL's after restor e)

2005-08-11 Thread Steve Schaub
Mike,
For what it's worth, we had better success with BMR using the 5.3.0.5 client
than the 5.2.2.0 when we did our hotsite test recently.
We also ran a pre and post restore script that copied/restored some of the
hardware specific files such as hal.dll, but we needed to restore to
dissimilar hardware.
Does this machine have other drives than c:? If so, they should be restored
first, in case any software references them.

Thanks

TSM Symposium 2005
Tivoli Storage Manager : Facing the Future
  St Catherine's College 27-29 September 2005

  http://tsm-symposium.oucs.ox.ac.uk/

  *  NOW - AGENDA updated  *
 *  NOW - Registration Open *

Over the last ten years Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) has been evolving
to handle the rapid growth in storage that we have all seen in the
workplace, presenting opportunities and (challenges!) along the way
for managing your data. The TSM Symposium 2005 is an ideal opportunity
this year for help in Facing the Future in storage management with
TSM.

In September, Oxford University is hosting the TSM Symposium which
will be held (once again) in St Catherine's College. This will enable
you to keep up with the latest features, gain tips on upgrading
existing archive and backup services and learn how to exploit new
functionality. There will be plenty of opportunities to gain technical
insight into TSM, with presentations from IBM Development,
contributions from experienced and established users as well as the
chance to meet other like-minded souls. How to make a contribution

We are seeking technical contributions in the form of papers and
presentations from the TSM user community - the system managers and
administrators who are arguably the real TSM experts - this is an
excellent chance to share your knowledge and wisdom!

Technical contributions from TSM solution architects and related
storage vendors are also sought: this is an opportunity to demonstrate
the flexibility and extensibility of TSM.

In addition, there are excellent opportunities for exhibiting at the
Symposium.

Please see the Contributions web page for further details.

Organisation of the TSM Symposium

This user-led event has been initiated and organised by Oxford
University Computing Services, and follows on from the previous events
held at Oxford in 1999, 2001 and 2003. The technical agenda is being
co-ordinated by:

* Laura Buckley, Storage Solutions
* Rolf Bogus, University of Heidelberg
* Kirsten Glöer, Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe GmbH
* Peter Jones, Oxford University
* Peter Pijpelink, PLCS
* Remco Post, SARA, Amsterdam
* Sheelagh Treweek, Oxford University
* Paul Zarnowski, Cornell University

The symposium will be held at St Catherine's College, with early
arrivals' registration opening on the afternoon of Monday 26 September
2005. The exhibitions will be open and the exhibitors will give their
introductory presentations before hosting an evening reception.

The symposium presentations will start on the following morning
(Tuesday 27 September 2005) and conclude at lunchtime on Thursday 29
September 2005. Optional residential accommodation is available in
en-suite rooms at the college and all meals are included.

All arrangements will be handled through Oxford University Computing
Services (please do not contact the college directly) and we can be
contacted by email or web form (preferably) and also by phone or
fax. The contact and registration pages give more details.

We look forward to meeting you at the Symposium in Oxford. Meanwhile,
consider whether you can make a contribution to the success of this
popular event by presenting a paper yourself?

Hi all,
Doing a TDP for Oracle AIX first time implementation. (Oracle 9i; AIX

attempt at an RMAN backup produced the following RMAN error:

RMAN-03009: failure of allocate command on ch00 channel at 08/11/2005 13:10:23
ORA-19554: error allocating device, device type: SBT_TAPE, device name:

Additional information: 7011
ORA-19511: Error received from media manager layer, error text:
SBT error = 7011, errno = 106, sbtopen: system error

However, nothing was logged in the TSM log I specified in TDPO.OPT dsmi_log
parm. That seemed odd so I changed the permissions on the log to 666,
and then RMAN backups started working. (Lucky shot in the dark). Now getting
same error on recovery. Despite what the content of the error message says, my
problems seem to be related to file ownership and / or permissions on the

are there any recent hits in IBMLINK.Any suggestions?? Thanks.

Re: ODBC Driver Connection

2005-08-11 Thread Andrew Raibeck
Debbie, the ODBC driver isn't inherently faster than other methods for
SELECTing data from the TSM database (it is really just a pass-through
mehanism for sending SELECT statements to the server and returning results
to the application).

Increasing the fetch size in the data source configuration can improve
performance for retrieving results from large tables. The default is 50;
I'd suggest trying something like 1 (you probably wont' see much in
the way of improved performance beyond 1).
