kernel errors, increased system load SLES 9 TSM 5.3.1.4
Hello, I have a problem with TSM Server 5.3.1.4 on z/Linux Suse SLES 9. I recently updated from SLES 8 TSM 5.2.x to that version. The server seems to run fine, except for two things: - server 5.3 or SLES9 seems to cause much more load than TSM 5.2 under SLES8 during nightly backups. (Scripts that nagios runs on that machine over ssh for monitoring purposes are getting timeouts) - I see following scary entries in /var/log/messages: (the same error showed up a couple of days ago) Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: 19a43980 00407a00 0049697c 00355510 Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel:00130fe4 19a43890 19a43898 Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel:00d0 0040 0001 Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: 003580e8 00106fde 19a438e0 Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel:0704 0704 074000d0 074000d0 Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: Call Trace: Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: [0016a9ca] __alloc_pages+0x4ce/0x4d4 Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: [0016aace] __get_free_pages+0x4e/0x8c Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: [28deca00] IBMTapeReadWriteBuffer+0x90/0x11c [IBMtape] Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: [28ded246] IBMTapeDriveWrite+0x2ca/0x18c8 [IBMtape] Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: [28de7d0a] IBMTapeWrite+0xee/0x1a0 [IBMtape] Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: [00192b92] vfs_write+0x102/0x1ac Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: [00192e28] sys_write+0xa8/0x118 Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: [0011f35c] sysc_noemu+0x10/0x16 Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: dsmserv: page allocation failure. order:6, mode:0xd0 Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: 19a438e0 00407a00 0049697c 00355510 Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel:00130fe4 19a437f0 19a437f8 Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel:00d0 0040 0001 Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: 003580e8 00106fde 19a43840 Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel:070019a43840 070019a43840 074000d0 074000d0 Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: Call Trace: Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: [0016a9ca] __alloc_pages+0x4ce/0x4d4 Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: [0016aace] __get_free_pages+0x4e/0x8c Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: [28decbd4] IBMTapeInitScatterGather+0x148/0x3b8 [IBMtape] Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: [28decf5c] IBMTapeScatterGather+0x118/0x138 [IBMtape] Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: [28ded286] IBMTapeDriveWrite+0x30a/0x18c8 [IBMtape] Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: [28de7d0a] IBMTapeWrite+0xee/0x1a0 [IBMtape] Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: [00192b92] vfs_write+0x102/0x1ac Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: [00192e28] sys_write+0xa8/0x118 Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: [0011f35c] sysc_noemu+0x10/0x16 Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: dsmserv: page allocation failure. order:5, mode:0xd0 Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: 19a438e0 00407a00 0049697c 00355510 Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel:00130fe4 19a437f0 19a437f8 Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel:00d0 0020 0001 Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: 003580e8 00106fde 19a43840 Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel:070019a43840 070019a43840 074000d0 074000d0 Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: Call Trace: Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: [0016a9ca] __alloc_pages+0x4ce/0x4d4 Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: [0016aace] __get_free_pages+0x4e/0x8c Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: [28decbd4] IBMTapeInitScatterGather+0x148/0x3b8 [IBMtape] Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: [28decf5c] IBMTapeScatterGather+0x118/0x138 [IBMtape] Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: [28ded286] IBMTapeDriveWrite+0x30a/0x18c8 [IBMtape] Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: [28de7d0a] IBMTapeWrite+0xee/0x1a0 [IBMtape] Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: [00192b92] vfs_write+0x102/0x1ac Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: [00192e28] sys_write+0xa8/0x118 Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: [0011f35c] sysc_noemu+0x10/0x16 Aug 23 00:21:32 tsmserv kernel: The server doesn't show anything special during that time in the activity log. server 5.1.9.0 rec log problem - multiple servers?
TSM 5.1.9.0 server on win2K server. I've got a very confusing problem, and our server is totally dead at the moment so I'm in a bit of an emergency. We've been running TSM 5.1.6.5 for 2-3 years, I recently (8 months ago) upgraded to 5.1.9.0, no problems. Last night, we ran out a tapes, and therefor the automatic backup of the database couldn't happen, and therefor the rec log filled up to maximum, and the server died and cannot restart until I increase the size of the log. Easy enough, I've had to do this before, but the standard commands are not working: dsmftm -log D:\tsmdata\server1\extrareclogspace 8000 that works fine, create/formats the new volume, but then: dsmserv extend log extrareclogspace 8000, dies with: C:\Program Files\tivoli\tsm\server1dsmserv extend log extrareeclogspace 8000 ANR0900I Processing options file c:\program files\tivoli\tsm\server1\dsmserv.opt ANR7800I DSMSERV generated at 10:06:54 on Mar 18 2004. ANR0991I Server shutdown complete. The problem is, we don't run two servers. We've got one server, that's all we've ever had, that's all we want. And this brings me back to something I've noticed since I first installed the server, which I thought was normal: In C:\Program Files\tivoli\tsm\ there are two server folders. a server and a server1. In the server folder that's where most of the executables live, like dsmserv.exe and dsmsvc.exe. In server1 folder there are .opt .log and .bat files, among others. But definately, it seems that the guts of the server live in server folder. However, the TSM management console window lists TSM Server1 as the real server, it doesn't even see Server. Whenever I have to deal with the MMC window, which I try to avoid at all costs, it only ever lists Server1, never just Server. As far as I remember, Server and Server1 have always both existed from when I first setup TSM 5.1.6.5 and it seemed wierd to me, but everything worked, so I thought Server1 and Server were somehow intertwinned, but they were basically the same server. Maybe that is wrong, and only now is the problem showing itself. Anyone have an idea? Again, we are down 100% until I can increase the reclog size. Thanks in advance, Alex
Re: server 5.1.9.0 rec log problem - multiple servers?
Not sure whether this relates to the problem, but you need to recreate that file anyway: Your reclog size is already 12GB (12000 mB). The size of your formatted extra space is 8GB (8000 mb). Max log size is 13GB. Try creating a log extension that is only 800MB. See if you get a different error. -Original Message- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Alexander Lazarevich Sent: Tuesday, August 23, 2005 10:54 AM To: ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU Subject: server 5.1.9.0 rec log problem - multiple servers? I had this happen on my AIX server. Not sure where the options are at in Win2k but you need to put sessions to zero and backups to none. Re: server 5.1.9.0 rec log problem - multiple servers?
This probably doesn't apply to you but sometimes when we just restart the TSM Server Service on Windows we get messages that volumes are in use by another server. Rebooting solves the problem. If you have not rebooted, I would give that a try. -Original Message- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Alexander Lazarevich Sent: Tuesday, August 23, 2005 10:23 AM To: ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU Subject: Re: server 5.1.9.0 rec log problem - multiple servers? 13GB maximum? Re: server 5.1.9.0 rec log problem - multiple servers?
Hi Aleksandre, I think that you have log file already 12GB in size, and maximum size for log file is 13GB. You are trying to extend it for 8GB which will not work. Try something that will give you 13GB in total. I hope this will help, Joe Crnjanski Infinity Network Solutions Inc. Re: server 5.1.9.0 rec log problem - multiple servers?
Quick observation. Look at the two commands... dsmftm -log D:\tsmdata\server1\extrareclogspace dsmserv extend log extrareeclogspace The name of the log changes from 'extrareclogspace' to 'extrareeclogspace'. There is an additional 'e' in the extend command. Please verify your command syntax, I will cross my fingers and we'll hope it works! Good Luck! John G. Volumes in copypool, but not in DRM?
Oh Wise Ones, I am a bit perplexed. I have 64 volumes that are in one of my copypools that are not in the drmedia table. I noticed the problem when looking through last night's dr recovery plan. Server is 5.1.9 running on aix 5.1. All of these volumes show up in the copystgpool.volumes.destroyed macro. None of them show up in a q drm. (source=none, dbb, or dbs) Vohistory shows them in a variety of states: stgnew, stgdelete, and backupfull. Q cont shows what appears to be valid data on the volumes. All of these volumes have been written to within the last week. Question: Any ideas as to how I could have gotten into this mess and/or how I can get out of it? thanks, cory *E-Mail Confidentiality Notice* This message (including any attachments) contains information intended for a specific individual(s) and purpose that may be privileged, confidential or otherwise protected from disclosure pursuant to applicable law. Limiting input volumes in backup stg command
I have a local primary storage pool that gets backed up to a copy storage pool that gets sent off site. In addition, I have started backing up the primary storage pool to virtual volumes at our DR location. This is working fine and I was able to backup all previous tapes in the primary pool to the virtual volumes at the DR location. I now have another storage pool that I want to backup to our DR location but it contains a lot more tapes in the primary pool. Even if I run the backup stg over the weekend it will not complete in one weekend. I don't see any option to limit the backup stg command to process specific volumes. If I just kick off the command Friday night and cancel it Sunday night and do that for the new few weekends would anyone expect this to be an issue? Any alternatives would be appreciated. Query for Summary Table
I'm trying to query the summary table, but, I don't want any information for schedules with 0 bytes. I've tried , !=, and ^=. None of these work. This is the error I receive: ANR2916E The SQL data types DECIMAL(18,0) and CHAR(1) are incompatible for operator ''. | ..V. select * from summary where bytes '0' Does anyone know what operator I need to use? Also, any idea where can I find information on querying database tables? Thanks in advance Debbie
Re: Query for Summary Table
Debbie, if you examine the attributes of the BYTES column from the COLUMNS table: select * from columns where tabname='SUMMARY' and colname='BYTES' you will see that BYTES is a decimal field. So the single quotes are not necessary, and your syntax should otherwise work. These all do the same thing: select * from summary where bytes != 0 select * from summary where bytes 0 select * from summary where not bytes = 0 select * from summary where not bytes == 0 select * from summary where bytes 0 Regards, Andy Andy Raibeck IBM Software Group Tivoli Storage Manager Client Development Internal Notes e-mail: Andrew Raibeck/Tucson/[EMAIL PROTECTED] Internet e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] The only dumb question is the one that goes unasked. Re: Query for Summary Table
It's not the operator - what the message is telling you is that bytes is a decimal number, not a character field. So you need to write the zero as a number, not a 'char' select * from summary where bytes 0 The best ref I found is the TSM Version 5.1 Technical Guide Redbook, Appendix A. Go to www.redbooks.ibm.com, search on SG24-6554, download the PDF. VERY helpful. Re: Limiting input volumes in backup stg command
That will work, no problems. A backup stgpool is always incremental. You can kill the process, restart it whenever you want, it will just pick up and copy whatever data wasn't copied the previous run. -Original Message- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Pugliese, Edward Sent: Tuesday, August 23, 2005 2:01 PM To: ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU Subject: Limiting input volumes in backup stg command I have a local primary storage pool that gets backed up to a copy storage pool that gets sent off site. I did see the decimal field, with a (p,s) of (18,0). However, I didn't realize the quotes were not needed,,, I'll also check out the redbook that Wanda suggested Thanks to all, Debbie Andrew Raibeck [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent by: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU 08/23/2005 02:11 PM Please respond to ADSM: Dist Stor Manager To: ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU cc: Subject:Re: [ADSM-L] Query for Summary Table Debbie, if you examine the attributes of the BYTES column from the COLUMNS table: select * from columns where tabname='SUMMARY' and colname='BYTES' you will see that BYTES is a decimal field. How to get mt driver on Solaris to recognize STK 9940B
I'm having a problem getting the TSM mt driver to recognize an STK 9940B tape drive. Setup: Sun V880 UltraSPARC server Solaris 9 8/03 release TSM 5.1.5.4 The 9940B is directly attached via a dual-port 2gb fibre-channel card. A Sun T3 disk array is connected to the other port. The card is not I/O stressed at all. There are also 9 DLT7000 tape drives connected to this host via SCSI cards. Those drives have been successfully using the TSM mt driver for about 2 years. The 9940B is a test case; we plan to add more drives later (and migrate to a more current TSM version) if this test is successful. I put this in /usr/kernel/drv/mt.conf: # Fibre Channel entries for mt.conf name=mt parent=fp target=0 lun=0 fc-port-wwn=500104f0007cce4d; 500104f0007cce4d is the WWN for the 9940B. I took this syntax from the TSM 5.3 mt.conf file. I left out the 'name=mt parent=pseudo instance=16383;' since this is only a 5.1.5.4 server (plus it panics the devfsadm command). When I did a reconfiguration reboot, the 9940B is recognized by the standard st driver. No matter what I did, it always was defined as an st driver device. I finally renamed the st drivers to get them out of the way, but subsequent reconfiguration reboots do not get the 9940B recognized by the mt driver. So what is the magical incantation that makes this all work? I'd use the st driver, but figure there's some good reason why TSM wants me to use the mt driver in its place. Thanks, Lance
