Re: how to speed up ...

2005-09-29 Thread Andrew Raibeck
Of course, before we can (try to) speed up the client, we need to know
where the bottleneck lies. The problem could very well be something other
than the amount of data you are backing up.

When the backup starts, periodically (every 5 minutes, for example) run
QUERY SESSION on the server side so you can get an idea of how much data
is being sent to the client during the initial backup query; after that,
use the QUERY SESSION to get an idea of how quickly data is moving between
client and server

Traversal of the file system can also have a profound impact. Even if you
are not actually backing up a lot of the data, it can take a long time to
traverse 8+ million files.

RESOURCEUTILIZATION of 5 might help... see reference info for this option
in the client manual.

Andy

Re: Filespace move

2005-09-29 Thread Loon, E.J. van - SPLXM
Hi David!
Yes. If it's just one or several filespaces, checkout the export node and
import node commands.
If all filespaces have to be moved to a new node, you can just do a rename of
the node and (if it's a Wintel client) do a rename of the filespaces.

Is there a way to move a filespace to a new node.

We don't want to backup the data again.

Re: Client Compression ON

2005-09-29 Thread Bill Dourado
Andy,

when you wrote objects -domain=-F:, that struck me as suspicious

Basically what I am trying to achieve is to have two schedules for a
remote node.
(using TSM Journalling)

1) To backup user data i.e F Drive
 Hence objects F:

2) To backup the remaining C: Drive and SYSTEMOBJECTS
 Hence objects -domain=-F:

These two schedules work as I intended now (on second run)
compression took place on the later schedule as well , without me making
any changes !

(Any further advise on setting these schedules up correctly would be
greatly appreciated.)

Also I may have to abandon client compression, as I already have
compression
at device level, (HP LTO-2 tape drives), to avoid unforeseen
complications.

Thanks for you help.

Bill

Hi Bill,

No, I wouldn't necessarily put them in that category. But there has to be
a logical explanation (I'm thinking configuration) as to why the second
schedule doesn't isn't showing any data as being compressed. For example,
. The
reasons could be numerous, so it is difficult to be more specific without
more specific information (VIVO = vague in, vague out :-). For starters, a
schedule log showing both backups, corresponding dsmerror.log, the dsm.opt
file, and from the server side, q n f=d for this node, q sch f=d for the
schedules in question, q clo for the client option set (if one exists),
and any other info you might have that might be pertinent.

Hi Bill, there could be any number of reasons for this. For example,
maybe
the backup with 0% compression occurred because no data was backed up.
You
show objects -domain=-F:. If this is literally what you have coded,
that
would explain it, since there is no file system on Windows that goes by
naming convention -domain=-F:. Or maybe no files were eligible for
backup. Maybe the data you backed up does not compress very well. Or the
second scheduled event is overriding the local options file COMPRESSION
 setting via a schedule option.

Re: how to speed up ...

2005-09-29 Thread Gianluca Perilli
Try increasing the values of this parameter on the server (by using the
command update node)

txngroupmax= xx

where x can range from a value of 4 up to 65000 files per transaction.
Th default value is 256 so if you have not changed it before, increase it
to an higher value (for ex 2000) and see what happens..

Think about the possibility to use the virtualmountpoint option, too.
Here is a brief explanation of this option:

The virtualmountpoint option defines a virtual mount point for a file
system if you want to consider files for backup that begin with a specific
directory within that file system. Using the virtualmountpoint option to
identify a directory within a file system provides a direct path to the
files you want to back up, saving processing time. It is more efficient to
define a virtual mount point within a file system than it is to define that
file system using the domain option, and then to use the exclude option in
your include-exclude options list to exclude the files that you do not want
to back up.

Use the virtualmountpoint option to define virtual mount points for
multiple file systems, for local and remote file systems, and to define
more than one virtual mount point within the same file system. Virtual
mount points cannot be used in a file system handled by automounter.
Note:
If the directory that you want to specify as a virtual mount point is a
symbolic link, set the followsymbolic option to Yes. If that option is set
to no (the default), you are not permitted to use a symbolic link as a
virtual mount point.

After you define a virtual mount point, you can specify the path and
directory name with the domain option in either the default client options
file or on the incremental command to include it for incremental backup
services. When you perform a backup or archive using the virtualmountpoint
option, the query filespace command will list the virtual mount point in
its response along with other file systems. Generally, directories that you
define as virtual mount points are treated as actual file systems and
require that the virtualmountpoint option is specified in the dsm.sys file
to restore or retrieve the data.
Note:
When you specify a virtualmountpoint option, the path that it specifies is
added to the default backup domain (domain ALL-LOCAL). The
virtualmountpoint path is always considered a local mount point
regardless of the real file system type it points to.
Supported Clients

This option is valid for all UNIX and Linux clients. The Tivoli Storage
Manager client API does not support this option.
Options File

Place this option in the dsm.sys file.
Syntax

Read syntax diagramSkip visual syntax diagram .-

   V |
---VIRTUALMountpoint directory-+-

Parameters

directory
Specifies the path and directory name for the directory you want to use
as the virtual mount point for a file system. You cannot use wildcard
characters in either the path or directory names.

Define only one virtual mount point with each virtualmountpoint option
that you include in your client system options file. Use the
virtualmountpoint option as many times as necessary to define all of the
virtual mount points that you want to use.

Examples

Options file:

virtualmountpoint /afs/xyzcorp.com/home/ellen
virtualmountpoint /afs/xyzcorp.com/home/ellen/test/data

Command line:

I think I found one situation that caused this problem. During a backup
schedule on FSPHTSM2, the diskpool filled, and numerous sessions tried
to mount tapes. These sessions were canceled before writing to the
tapes, and it looks like FSPHTSM2 did not add the tape to the storage
pool even though
FSPHTSM1 marked them as such. I think this type of situation has
happened several times over the past few years leading to the large
number of tapes 'orphaned'.

Will running an AUDIT LIBRARY fix this type of problem? Is there any
less intrusive way to recover the tapes?

Thanks for any help.

Do a vmstat while the TSM server is starting and look for PI/PO. If
present you are paging and that is probably the cause of the disk
activity on rootvg. You can also run a filemon during the startup to

ANR2177I ADMIN_CENTER has 1 invalid sign-on attempts. The limit is 3.

ANR0418W Session 10174 for administrator ADMIN_CENTER (DSMAPI) is refused

because an incorrect password was submitted.

But no one here knows what this user is for or what our original password
was. We've been tying the hunt and peck method but so far no luck. Does
someone out there know what the default password for this user is? Or if
not, then where is this being used so that I can assign it a new password
and get it working again.

Thanx.

Re: Question regarding Administration user ADMIN_CENTER

2005-09-29 Thread Choudarapu, Ramakrishna (GTI)
I got this from : Tivoli Storage Manager Administration Center:
Frequently Asked Questions

When you install a Tivoli Storage Manager Version 5.3 server, an
administrator named ADMIN_CENTER with the password ADMIN_CENTER is
automatically created. The health monitor uses this administrator to
access the server and obtain health information. Before you can use the
health monitor, it must be configured. This consists of setting the
default password for the ADMIN_CENTER administrator and optionally
adjusting the health monitor refresh interval. This configuration only
needs to be done once, regardless of the number of administrators and
server connections you add. The new password you specify will be applied
to all of the servers that are connected to the Administration Center.
By default, the ADMIN_CENTER administrator is locked. For each server
connection you add, you can specify whether to unlock the ADMIN_CENTER
administrator to enable health monitoring.

Ramakrishna Choudarapu

Does TSM hammer that volhist file on startup?
Maybe the swap file ?
Try nmon (you can download it from ibm.com). It can show you a top list of
processes that uses the most I/O.

Do you use the 'page shadow' feature? If so, look at where that file is
located.

You might want to look into filemon or some other utilities to see what part
of the disk is getting I/O.

archiving question

2005-09-29 Thread Troy Frank
I have a conundrum similiar to a recent posting. We have ~ 140 servers getting
backed up. Management wants to take an archive of every backed up server
bi-monthly (our normal backup retention is 60 versions/60 days). These would
get kept for 1 year. At year-end, every system would take an archive that gets
kept 7 years. Since there are going to be 2 retention requirements, I created
2 management classes to match up.

Currently I manage all our backups through server-side client option sets.
Ideally, I would like the archive jobs to use those same option sets to
determine what should get archived. From what I've been able to find, that's
not possible. Which leaves 2 choices, both ugly.

1. Create 2 archive schedules for every server, so I can put custom info in
the Objects field. (1 schedule for each retention possibility)

2. Create 2 archive schedules for each type of server (novell,MS,ect), and
specify common objects to get backed up.
i.e. vol1:\* for netware, and something like c:\* for windows.

#1 is very ugly for obvious reasons. #2 wouldn't even really work, since not
all servers need the same things archived. Some windows servers have a D:\
that would need archiving, while on most servers, D:\ would be the cdrom drive.

Like I said, the most thrilling answer would be to find out there is a way to
make archives use the Client Option Sets. Otherwise, is there an option #3 or
4 that I've missed here? The netware client documentation implies that there's
an include.archive option that can be used in Option Sets, but it doesn't
explain how. When I've tried testing it, it doesn't seem to work.

Re: Invalid verb received causing rc=12

2005-09-29 Thread Stapleton, Mark
Please, please consult the IBM site when seeking answers.

Here's what you get when go to www.ibm.com and search for
cuGetBackQryResp: Unknown objInfo header:

http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg1IC40841

It refers to a different level of TSM, but I suspect the problem is much
the same.

I'm guessing that 15 is the errno value, which means Block device
required (from /usr/include/asm-generic/errno-base.h).

Are you sure that /dev/IBMtape0 is a block device? If you do a
'file /dev/IBMtape0', you should get something like this:

/dev/IBMtape0: block special (X/Y)

If not, you're using the wrong device file.

Upgrade to TSM 5.3 with TSM 5.2 web interface messes up frame

2005-09-29 Thread John Schneider
Greetings,
I just upgraded a TSM server to 5.3 and also installed the migration
TSM 5.2 Web interface. The 5.2 Web interface basically works, but the
center frame is missing. The left hand navigation bar is correct, but when
I open up something that should produce content in the center frame, instead
it opens a whole new window and puts the content there. I can limp along
with this behavior, but it is annoying to have to go back and forth between
two windows.
If this is an old topic I am sorry, I looked for it on the archives
and couldn't find it.

Best Regards,
