Potential Future TSM Enhancements - Collocation of active Data

2006-06-19 Thread Thomas Rupp
Dear TSM-ers,

At the Oxford University TSM Symposium 2005 there was session A
Close-up Look at Potential Future Enhancements
http://tsm-symposium.oucs.ox.ac.uk/papers/A%20Close-up%20Look%20at%20Pot
ential%20Future%20Enhancements%20(Dave%20Cannon).pdf
mentioning a feature called Collocation of active data.
This would improve restores because all active data could be held on
disk storage whereas the inactive data is migrated to tape.

Does anyone know if this enhancement will make it into the next TSM
Release/Version? If yes, when will it be available?

Kind regards
Thomas Rupp

Re: Potential Future TSM Enhancements - Collocation of active Data

2006-06-19 Thread David 'Sniper' Rigaudiere
Did you use the cache on stgpool disk ?
With cached stgpool data will not moved from disk to tape but copied
during migration.
When the stgpool disk become full the oldest data are deleted.

This can you help a bit.
The cons is a performance hit during migration.

OT? TSM in a hospital environment

2006-06-19 Thread Tyree, David
Are there any folks on the list that are using TSM in a
hospital?

Sometimes we have to battle with some of our software
venders to allow us to backup their system using TSM. Sometimes they
will tell us that the system is FDA approved as is and must be backed up
using a built-in tape drive and we can't touch the system. Some times
that might be believable but not always. It seems that GE appears to be
especially hard headed in this regard.

We bought into TSM because you back up anything (well most
anything) and not have to worry about having assorted different tape
drives scattered everywhere.

I would like to compare notes with other TSM people if
possible.

thanks

Re: OT? TSM in a hospital environment

2006-06-19 Thread Barnhart, Troy
Been there done (and still doing) that...

We have TSM and related products for our facilities.
(We have standardized our database backups on BMC's SqlBackTrack.)

We weigh the need of the app and usually strong-arm them back...
If a vendor says that we can't touch their data, we DON'T touch their data.
We put them on the hook for recovery. I think most healthcare-vendors are
use to hospitals that simply write a check to the vendor for services. We
are very hands-on with our own data...

Usually, a vendor's South Dakota support resources are not too spectacular,
and after a disaster or two, they come around to our way of thinking.

Plus, Hospitals seem to have a bit different IT enviroment as shops in other
industries. We have literally hundreds of applications from different vendors.
We have different servers, facilities, operating systems, VENDOR's REQUIREMENTS,
etc...

Anything specific giving you problems?

Troy

Help - Domino TDP failing after R7 upgrade !!!

What/where is it looking that is causing the failure ?

We are fast running out of archivelog space !

Re: OT? TSM in a hospital environment

2006-06-19 Thread Bell, Charles (Chip)
Yep, we support 5 hospitals here. The only problems I have run into with
Application vendors is that they sometimes request that I exclude key
app components from backup, and back up a copy they generate instead.
Also, in case of SQL, I'll set up TDP to back up the databases on a
separate schedule if they do not fully support the databases.

I've heard other complain of GE, and I wonder if they are concerned that
they are losing potential customers to Phillips and others over that
very issue. Let's not innovate or anything... :)

But, yes, some vendors are very picky about what they will allow you to
back up, and how you can back it up. We have had many that try to blame
TSM for ills that end up being THEIR app, TSM client hardware, etc...I'm
sure I'm preaching to the choir. Not surprisingly, we win all of those
battles. :)

adsm.org searches

What am I doing wrong?

I'm trying to search adsm.org for user experiences with Journal-Based

If I search for journal I set about 25 hits, including a couple of porn

If I search for JBB I get no hits at all. Ditto if I combine the two

Is there something wrong with the search function of the site? Or is this

Thanks for the suggestion. We don't have any other product running on
these servers. Just 4-6 Domino instances.

The TDP process is such a bouncing-ball that following one file link to
another file link to another link and so onTrying to
figure out which of these many scripts is actually issue the error is
maddening, since I have found it in at least two places.

The individual paths have not changed. I checked the .profile files for
each of the instances and they have remained the same.

I would like to compare notes with other TSM people if

We have usually been able to get vendors to agree to letting us use
TSM. In many cases, this entailed agreeing to a contract clause
stating that we accepted responsibility for the risk of not being
able to recover a system using TSM backups.

There have been a few cases where we were not able to persuade
vendors to give up their favorite backup metadology. In most of these
cases a hospital department ended up signing a contract despite
strong suggestions from the IS department to consider competing
products.

There have been one or two cases where we ended up with a compromise,
such as daily TSM backups of an entire system and weekly backups
of the C drive to local tape.

TSM for SQL

2006-06-19 Thread Paul Dudley
We are about to purchase TSM licenses so that we can backup or SQL
server databases on our Windows server clients direct to TSM.

Is there an FAQ or guide available on how to do this?

Re: Missing row for bitfile 0.15471096

2006-06-19 Thread Aaron Becar
Here is the error that I receive when I run the command:

delete volume /tsm/tsmdisk4/vol1.dsm discard=y
--
06/19/2006 15:03:41 ANR2017I Administrator AARON issued command:
DELETE VOLUME /tsm/tsmdisk4/vol1.dsm discard=y (SESSION: 19405)
06/19/2006 15:03:43 ANR2017I Administrator AARON issued command:
DELETE VOLUME /tsm/tsmdisk4/vol1.dsm discard=y (SESSION: 19405)
06/19/2006 15:03:43 ANRD dfqry.c(594): ThreadId19 Missing row
for bitfile 0.15471096.(SESSION: 19405)
06/19/2006 15:03:43 ANR2406E DELETE VOLUME:
Volume /tsm/tsmdisk4/vol1.dsm still contains data.(SESSION: 19405)
---

The volume does not exist on the system any more, and I want to delete
it. It is not affecting our backups or restores, just a housekeeping
measure. Thanks!

Aaron

Exclude.dir question

2006-06-19 Thread Gill, Geoffrey L.
I'm wondering if this will work as an exclude.dir. I'm finding that some
instances of SQL have missed files in this directory because they are in use
and I don't see the standard .ldf and .mdf files I have excluded. So I'm
wondering if I can exclude the directory this way since the directory name
between the Microsoft SQL Server directory and DATA directory are named
differently.

'\...\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\...\DATA'

Thanks,

Geoff Gill
