Linux - library and tape devices for TSM

2009-07-21 Thread Gill, Geoffrey L.
Hello all,
I am struggling a bit trying to find a way to see tape and library devices as
easily as you can in AIX so I can add a library and drives to a TSM instance
I'm trying to get up on Linux. On the Linux box I built I loaded, Redhat5, TSM
6.1.1.1 and the IBM drivers and it looks like that went ok. EMC has been little
help so far and I'm quite disappointed in the knowledge transfer so far in
getting this VTL up and running on TSM.

We defined IBM LTO3 drives in the library on the VTL. I have looked at a few
logs I've found and I think I see everything discovered as it should.
/proc/scsi/scsi shows LUN's for the Library and drives on 2 seperate cards. The
2 fiber cards have the library and 10 drives on one port and the other port has
10 drives. I can't however figure out the path to these devices the same way
AIX gives them to you with the lsdev command. I don't know if documentation is
scarce or if I'm just looking inthe wrong places. in /dev I see some IBMtape
files and a changer file but not an IBMchanger file.Maybe that's because I'm
not suposed to with this scsi library but again, I can't tell.

Is there anyone running Linux with a VTL or other similar library that can
help me with some commands, logs to look at, library and tape path definitions
or any other things to look at that might help me?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Geoff Gill

Re: TDP Exchange Error

2009-07-21 Thread Yudi Darmadi

I'm using legacy backup, and From The "tdpexcc q exchange" command, all
circular logging are disabled. It seems that when backup occured, tdp
exchange still asume the circular logging were enabled. Do i have to stop &
restart the exchange server?

Yudi,

After the legacy and VSS full backups, the exchange server deletes the
logs; the logs won't be deleted if the storage groups are not mounted.
Similarly during the legacy incremental backups, the exchange server
deletes the transactional logs after they are being backed up.
Using the command line, run "tdpexcc query exchange" to ensure that the
circular logging is effectively disabled on the exchange server and
check the event viewer.

Dear TSM-ers,

I need help for my Exchange Backup.
I got this message when performing an incremental Backup:
*ACN5798E MS Exchange API HRESEBACKUPSETUP() failed with HRESULT:
0xc800020e -An incremental backup cannot be performed when circular
logging is enabled.
*ACN5798E MS Exchange API HRESEBACKUPOPENFILE() failed with HRESULT:
0xc8000232 -Some log or patch files are missing.
But The Circular logging for all Storage Groups had already disabled.
There's no problem when performing Full Backup, but the logs weren't
deleted. Does a full backup straight automatically delete those logs?

Re: Errno = 23, 1167 and stuck tapes

2009-07-21 Thread Len Boyle
Henrik, when we first installed lto-4 tape drives, we had a few problems with
them. The IBM ce downloaded a dump of data from the tape drive and send that on
to the higher level support folks. They asked to update the firmware, which was
just release. This help us greatly.

Our tape drives are installed in an IBM 3584 (aka TS3500) so the tape drive
dump can be gathered either via the CE's laptop tools or via the IBM library
web interface.

If you are using IBM's drivers, you should be able to download the drive dump
via a utility supplied with the driver code. In our case this was not an option
as the tape drives were attached to an netapp box.

I don't have a direct answer for you; but my suspicion is that drive
microcode is involved, perhaps in conjunction with cartridge vs. drive
characteristics. The IBM readme document S1003097 for LTO4 shows a
very large number of problems that have had to be corrected,
suggestive of more, ongoing. The stuck tape situation may suggest a
problem managing the mechanics and/or timing of drive operations.
Given the mechanical malfunction which results, I'd have your CE
attend to the next event, to examine the conditions logged in the
drive's memory, to try to uncover the cause. The inability of an OS
command to effect tape dismount indicates a serious problem. If the
CE can't be gotten in time during the next event, see if you can have
the operator get at the drive to record any error codes on its panel.
Make sure the CE pores over the sense bytes you're getting from the
drive.

Query a Oracle Database Configuration

2009-07-21 Thread Christian Svensson
Hi,
This has nothing to do with TSM really. But does anyone know any good command
in Oracle (Linux) to see if Oracle save all their Archive Logs direct to TSM?

What I can see right now is that RMAN backups Full and Incremental backup to
TSM. But we do also have connections everyday for the Oracle node that isn't
related to the backup or schedule service. So I just wanna confirm that we are
saving all Archive Logs direct to TSM.

Thanks for your help

Re: FW: Errno = 23, 1167 and stuck tapes

2009-07-21 Thread Buddy Howeth
We have 2 3582 libraries and sometimes get the same message. In our case,
we learned from IBM that both libraries need there own channel or
controller. We are using one channel with both libraries daisy chained
together. We were told by IBM that this was the cause of our errors. You
didn't say what type of library or how they (it) may be connected. But
when the error occurs, it takes 10 minutes before the tape will actually
dismount from the drive. TSM waits the entire time. If I manually
dismount the tape during this time, TSM will mark the tape as readonly.
This only occurs during reclamation and only when it is running on both
libraries at the same time. We avoid the problem by running it on one
library at a time.

This is in our case, may not be the same setup for you. We plan to add a
third library and will fix the daisy chain issue later.
