Now that I have a TS3500 - I have questions

2013-05-28 Thread Zoltan Forray
Our new TS3500 was installed this weekend (replacing our 17-year old 3494)
and I have lots of questions about how things should be done/configured and
why it is doing what it is doing.

First off, the library is configured as 2-virtual librarys, each side with
fixed drive assignments and each side managed by a separate TSM server.

1. Per other discussions, I configured 255 Virtual IO. We also
configured/enabled Insert Notification. However, some tapes keep being
inserted unassigned while most are properly assigned to the right
library?. Why?

2. What is the proper CHECKIN command options for doing mass checkins from
the IO/VIO slots?SEARCH=BULK or SEARCH=YES - CHECKLABEL=YES or
CHECKLABEL=BARCODE? The book says for a SCSI library you can't specify
SEARCH=YES and CHECKLABEL=NO

Re: Antwort: [ADSM-L] Now that I have a TS3500 - I have questions

2013-05-28 Thread Marouf, Nick
Hello Zoltan,

Congrats!
For checkin I use the following

checkin libv 3584lib search=bulk checkl=barcode status=Scratch waitt=0

bulk means to check the Virtual I/O slots or entry doors. The YES option is
only needed if you want to scan the entire library. With ALMS option that your
library has the physical library is also keeping track of the tape locations,
and sending this to the tsm server when you checkin. I would also add the
waitt=0 option, so you don't have to wait the default 60 minutes, you can then
check the logs for any details related to the checkin.

For the split libraries that you have setup, you can assign and
probably should assign a tape range associated with each virtual library. That
should take care of the unassigned tapes that you are seeing. Ultimately, you
should be able to insert a mix and match of volumes, and the library will
assign each of those tapes to its respective virtual library. Then you run the
tape checkin that assign a status of scratches to them.

Take a look at the following online library settings under Cartridges
- Cartridge Assignment Policy

Re: Now that I have a TS3500 - I have questions

2013-05-28 Thread Zoltan Forray
I forgot to mention we aren't using CAP. The tape numbers/range are
scatter between systems and we often shuffle tapes between TSM servers as
the need arises if we run low/out of scratch tapes. We have a tight budget
and can't just go out and buy a 1000 tapes at a time. We usually have
between 25-75 scratch tapes per TSM LM server and sometimes have sudden
increases of multiple terabytes of new backups.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Re: Now that I have a TS3500 - I have questions

2013-05-28 Thread Zoltan Forray
Thanks for asking. Lots of drama but it didn't take anywhere as long as
they guessed. In fact it took me longer to reconfigure 7-TSM servers and
then figure out various nuances then the physical deinstall/install.

The library was completely emptied and ready for them to shutdown by 10am
Friday. They showed up around 1pm and had the 3494 dismantled by 4pm,
eventhough they did a proper disasembly (took it apart carefully vs using
hacksaws and chainsaws. Originally IBM was going to 'deinstall for
purposes of disposal' but then they came up with a recycle program and
didn't charge us.

They originally said they were going to quit by 6:30pm and come back
Saturday. I get a phone call at 8:30pm saying the TS3500 was installed and
ready to have our tapes manually loaded but it wasn't powered-up or tested,
yes.

We agreed to start at 8am Saturday. They arrived and powered things up and
tested, oiled (it was squeaking) and upgraded the library firmware. Turned
it over to us by 1pm.

Had to restart most of my TSM servers but they still couldn't see the tape
drives. Nobody told us the WWN of the drives would be changed/managed by
the library so my SAN guy had to reconfigure the switch/ports/fabric.

After that it was TSM reconfiguration and wrestling with the
assignment/checkin process (what fun manually reassigning 1400 cartridges).
IMHO, the 3494 was sooo much easier to manage.

We went home around 6pm Saturday.

Still had some TSM issues to deal with Sunday morning, mostly things like
vaulting, training operators how to checkin/checkout tapes, etc.

Thanks for the suggestion. My only issue with the SEARCH=BULK is it they
puts up an operator prompt requiring a reply. Is this is the way it has to
be to work properly, I/the operators can live with it.

Our new TS3500 was installed this weekend (replacing our 17-year old
 3494)
and I have lots of questions about how things should be done/configured
 and
why it is doing what it is doing.

First off, the library is configured as 2-virtual librarys, each side
 with
fixed drive assignments and each side managed by a separate TSM server.

  1. Per other discussions, I configured 255 Virtual IO. We also
configured/enabled Insert Notification. However, some tapes keep being
inserted unassigned while most are properly assigned to the right
  library?. Why?

  2. What is the proper CHECKIN command options for doing mass checkins
 from
  the IO/VIO slots?SEARCH=BULK or SEARCH=YES - CHECKLABEL=YES or
CHECKLABEL=BARCODE? The book says for a SCSI library you can't specify
  SEARCH=YES and CHECKLABEL=NO

TDP Backups - VSS Provider Choice?

2013-05-28 Thread Stackwick, Stephen
We're running the 6.4 Exchange TDP on an Exchange DAG cluster (Windows 2008).
These are VSS backups, and since we're running on Netapps, the Data Ontap VSS
provider is installed. Is there a way to tell the TDP to use the Windows VSS
software provider instead? I swear I've seen it someplace, but can't track it
down.

Try placing this in the DSM.OPT file for the CAD/AGENT:

Re: Increase in unique data

2013-05-28 Thread Huebner, Andy
There are a few details missing.
Are you writing to the same VTL system?
If so you may be seeing TSM rebuild the aggregates which effectively changes
the data the VTL sees.
If it is a new VTL then the first data is always new and has nothing to
de-duplicate against.

Currently i am in the process of exporting by tape to a new tsm server version
6.3. Our old TSM server was run with a VTL with Deduplication. During the
process of the migration i see a big increase in unique data being stored on
the Dedup engine. I just wanted to know if during the export operations if the
data is altered in some way which result in the dedupe engine seeing data that
is already stored as new data?

move a node to a new domain

2013-05-28 Thread Jeanne Bruno
Hello. I wanted to move one of our nodes to a new domain we recently created.

After I deleted the scheduled associations and nodegroup member, I updated the
node with the new domain.
And then I did a 'move nodedata xyz fromstgpool=abc tostgpool=def
(both are primary storage pools types).

The move nodedata was successful, however when I do a 'q nodedata xyz', I'm
seeing some .bfs volumes that still reference the old storage pool name.
But when I pipe the contents of the .bfs file and do a search on my xyz
node.nothing.

So then I did a 'move data D:\win2k_prim2\00015A07.bfs' to see if that would
move any data from that volume to a new volume and delete any pointers from my
node in question.

It did move the data to a new volume, but I'm still seeing my xyz node with the
reference to the old storage pool to a new .bfs file.

Q nodedata xyz:

NODE: VOL NAME: STGPOOL
PHY SP OCC
XYZ D:\abc_prim1\000139DF.BFS abc_PRIM132.62
   **fi still on old stgpool??
XYZ D:\abc_PRIM2\000150F7.BFSabc_PRIM 0.60
XYZ D:\abc_PRIM2\000165B3.BFSabc_PRIM 0.11
XYZ D:\abc_PRIM2\00018192.BFSabc_PRIM 0.05
XYZ M:\def_PRIM1\00017F02.BFS def_PRIM 12,326.56
 ***THIS IS THE NEW STGPOOL

Question is why after a move nodedata, does my node XYZ still have file
references on the old Storage pool abc_Prim?

Any insite is greatly appreciated.

I've been looking for someway of cancelling the backup too, but no luck.
The snapshot been removed takes more time than the backup.

Re: TSM VE 6.4: How to kill a running backup

2013-05-28 Thread Arbogast, Warren K
I don't know a way to cancel a TSMVE backup from the plug-in.

We cancel a running backup by disabling client sessions on the TSM server. This
stops new guest backups from starting, and limits the cleanup afterward.
Then,we stop the Client Scheduler service on the data mover.
