Can you abandon conventional NDMP backups for SnapVault?

2013-11-12 Thread Nora
Hello,
Thanks for all the replies!
I've had a pretty bad experience with SnapDiff. We engaged IBM several times to
help us sort out our NDMP backups, and all they could suggest was to use
SnapDiff. So I tested it, and it turns out it cannot be used for NetApp in
cluster mode! It can only be used for NetApp in 7-mode. So there goes SnapDiff,
so we've had to depend on trying to run NDMP. That's why we're thinking of
SnapVault now.

Richard, thanks for sharing your design. It is similar to what we are
considering. Howevever we are thinking of just SnapMirroring the secondary
SnapVault NetApp to the DR site. A couple of questions though:
- How do you do single file restores? As far as I understand snapvault works at
qtree level, so what happens when you need to restore a file?
- Do you do any tape outs with SnapVault? Does it need to be scripted
separately ?

Thanks!

Sounds like the problem I had back a while ago - I could post to the
newsgroup (hint for all you "test"-ers - go to
http://adsm.org/lists/html/ADSM-L/ and you will see ALL posts that make it
through to the listserver - including these "tests") but inbound was
stuck/blocked/filtered somewhere down the line.

To prove/get around it, I used my personal Gmail account to subscribe and
everything was coming through there, just fine.

Eventually it cleared up on its own with no-one admitting to doing the
blocking or unblocking.

When working with consultants in setting the system up, we first thought
to snapmirror the production side snavault secondary to the DR site, but
then we started thinking (yea, thinking is hard). In a DR we would have a
snapmirrored copy of production, and, a snapmirrored snapvault copy, but
there would be no tie between them. We want the DR site to "just work".
THis meant we wanted the DR snapvault relationship to be working form the
DR copy of the data. (did any of that make sense?)

I wish I understood snapvault better. It's my understanding is the same
as yours - it's only a qtree level restore. What you would do is run
snapshots on the production volume (hourly, daily, weekly, whatever) from
which individual files could be restored (right click in windows, or, from
the snapshot dir), and, snapvault it to your snapvault filer for big
restores if needed. Individual files could also be copied from a mounted
snapvaulted qtree.

The Toasters mailing list for NetApp systems can provide excellent help:

delete volhist

2013-11-12 Thread Marouf, Nick
Hello,
Can someone maybe provide a bit more clarification on this technote?

http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21653710&myns=swgtiv&mynp=OCSSGSG7&mync=E

We generally set the DRM with SET DRMDBBACKUPEXPIREDAYS and then after tapes
moved to vault for the day, run the following commands

delete volhist type=ALL todate=TODAY-180
delete volhist type=DBB todate=TODAY-3

Should I be concerned?

Thank You,
-Nick
