Low scratch tape problems

2006-11-01 Thread Dave Zarnoch
Folks,

Have a problem with low scratch tapes and my copypool

This past weekend, my coworker successfully completed a node migration
from one storage pool to another of approximately 4TB

Unfortunately, when my tapepool - tapecopy script launched, it is
making copies of all the new tapes that were created as well as the normal
night's backups.

Is there anyway to seperate the tapes that were created via the node
migration and the normal night's backups?

Thanks!

2006-08-01 Thread Dave Zarnoch
We had a similar problem concerning ACSLS and an SL8500 library.

After troubleshooting by TSM and the SL8500 technicians, we were
instructed to add the following to the dsmserv.opt file:

AcsTimeoutX 15

We restarted TSM and ACSLS and everything ran fine.

BTWWe have to specifiy the CAP in our MOVE statements:

MOVE DRMEDIA * wherest=mo tost=va cmd=VOL w=n rem=Untileefull cap=0,1,0

Hope this helps

This could be just normal process.

Sometimes when all TSM drives are all in use or mounted, move media command
will fail. Even you tell not to check label, when label is not readable, it
will still need to mount the tape into the drive for processing.

Re: ACSLS ejects not working... help!

2006-08-01 Thread Dave Zarnoch
Yes, I was a little confused myself but I was told that
there was a bug in the code that could appear using
the default value. I'm not sure why 15 was used.
Tivoli said that they were working on a true fix but
that setting the value to 15 was a workaround for now.

I also heard of another site that had the same problem
and solved it the same way. Unfortunately, I do not have
the contact information for that site,

I was also told that this bug does not appear on each site
and also that the value of 15 may not apply to your site.

Both my site and the other site that applied the fix were
running 9840C drives.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the suggestions!

When I looked up the definition of ACSTIMEOUTX parameter I wasn't exactly
sure how this pertains to an eject for a library? Mine is currently set
to 1 which is the default. So, am I to assume that it only has 600
seconds/10 min. to actually eject the tapes or to just begin ejecting
them? I guess I am just not quite sure what the true meaning of this
parameter is...

ACSTIMEOUTX
Specifies the multiple for the built-in timeout value for ACSLS APIs. The
built-in timeout value for the ACS audit API is 1800 seconds; for all
other ACSLS APIs it is 600 seconds. For example, if the multiple value
specified is 5, the timeout value for audit API becomes 9000 seconds, and
all other APIs become 3000 seconds.
Syntax
-ACSTIMEOUTX--value--

Parameters
value
Specifies the multiple for the built-in timeout value for ACSLS API. The
range is from 1 to 100. The default is 1.
Examples
acstimeoutx 1

Thanks!

Any drive taken off-line then brought on-line will have a state of unknown.
As long as the path is on-line TSM will use the drive. As soon as TSM uses

scratch tape question

2006-03-17 Thread Dave Zarnoch
As a result of expiration, reclamation and removal of a large storage pool.
We are getting back approximately 100 scratch tapes/week

We run an SL8500 library with 1600 cells of which 600 are free.

Is there any difference whether I check these scratch tapes in as they
arrive or place them in an inventory outside the silo.

Right now we have 250 scratch tapes in the silo and use approximately
15/night.

60 more are coming in today.

I can see that placing them in an inventory will require an extra step
to keep the tapes in some sort of order.

But, is there any disadvantages to have so many scratch tapes available
in the silo?

sort of format of the DB but that does not occur. So I would say based
on what you have shown us that there are no problems with this part of

Dave -

If you do 'Query DB Format=Detailed' you will see your db page size
and thereby can compute the actual amount of space required on the
backup volume. Compare that with your technology specs, and take into
consideration compression which may be in effect per your Devclass.

Magic.

Your posting did not specify which level of 9840 drive/cartridge
technology is being used. I'll then assume 9840A. Info I found online
says of the basic 9840:

The native 20GB cartridge capacity can be significantly extended by
StorageTek's enhanced LZ-1 compression technology (4:1 compression is
typical).

As your concerns express, however, you are near the edge of a cliff,
and the best general advice in life is Stay away from the edge. I
would pursue modernization of tape technologies there. If demands
pushed your TSM db further, you might consider firing up a second TSM
server.

Hello,

Does anyone know of a way to Automate sever scripts to run
on there own?? I have scripts set up that I would like to run say
every two hours. I know to run a script you would use the
run command but can that be automated?

TSM 5.3.2.1
AIX 5.3

Thanks for any help or suggestions

Is it possible to schedule a full client server backup onto tape
where the data comes direct from the client server? From my
understanding of the gen backupset command it appears that it grabs
the server data from existing backups already on tape. I would
prefer to get the data direct from the client server as I have had a
lot of problems with the gen backupset command.

There've been several suggestions about defining new nodes. I would
add an observation that you're not going to change much of the process
by cutting a backupset off a new node.

If your problems with gen backupset have to do with bad media on which
current data is stored, then taking a new 'full' of the box will
certainly help. But you might want to consider addressing the
bad-data problem also / instead (copypools?).

Similarly, if you feel there's some problem with the distribution of
data amongst your primary volumes, a new backup could help, but again
you might want to rethink things like collocation.

But other than that, you will be placing yourself in an analogous
logical position before you start the gen backupset; a good
incremental, data in your TSM server, etc. The backupset is generated
from current primary data on the TSM server, and not directly from the
client box.

So I'd expect you to encounter the same problem when you try to gen
backupset from the new node. This could end up being immensely
frustrating, especially if the node is large and taking the new copy
is inconvenient.

redirect output in readable format

2006-01-31 Thread Dave Zarnoch
Simple question?

When I do a $TSMCMD q vol 302302 f=d result from a UNIX command line.
I get the file result in unformatted output.

How do I redirect the command from TSM to a file in readable format from

Not sure I know what you mean by unformated output but try the
  -displaymode=list|table

But now I see in /usr/bin:

I don't understand this question:

Sooo...I need to upgrade the client on the server?

Can you elaborate on what you mean by client on the server? You are
using the program dsmadmc.exe that is packaged with the backup-archive
client, rght?

You need to use an admin command line interface that supports the
-dataonly=yes option, as Richard pointed out. The machine on which you run
the admin interface is immaterial.

Note that 4.2 is long out of support. You should get your clients updated
to more current levels.

You will need to do 2 audits, 1 within the ACSLS software and 1 from TSM.

The rule of thumb I have is that the ACSLS audit will take about 5 seconds
per tape.

( 12 tapes per minute, 800 / 12 = 66.67 minutes ) just over an hour.

Then the TSM audit library should simply exchange data with the ACSLS
server, a few minutes I would guess.

Mixed up libraries

2006-01-24 Thread Dave Zarnoch
We have somehow screwed up the state of some of our tapes;

We had an old library called EAGLELIB which we were sure we migrated
all of the tapes over to the new library C_LIBR

But we found some EAGLELIB tapes that are duplicates of C_LIBR tapes

(e.g.)

Tape 300410

q libv EAGLELIB 300410

Library Name Volume Name Status Owner Last Use Home
Device Cleanings Left Media Type
  Element Type
  --- -- -- - ---
-- -- --
EAGLELIB 300410 Private

q libv C_LIBR 300410

Library Name Volume Name Status Owner Last Use
HomeDevice
Element Type
 --- -- -- -
--- --
C_LIBR 300410 Private Data

q vol 300410

Volume Name Storage Device Estimated
Pct Volume
 Pool Name Class Name Capacity
Util Status
 --- -- -
-
300410 C_EAGLETAPE C_DEVC 61,171.3
99.2 Full

Which is OK because C_EAGLETAPE is a storage pool in C_LIBR

How do w get rid of the EAGLELIB version?

I've seen this before with ACSLS, and TSM doesn't finish the move, and
change the status, until the tapes are removed from the CAP slots on the
library.

2005-08-30 Thread Dave Zarnoch
Thanks!

I actually found out that there were some minor problems with TSM ver
5.3.1.0 but were fixed in 5.3.1.1

Here's the email that was posted to this group on 04/08/05 by a TSM
representative:

APAR IC45703 resolves an issue where ACSLS libraries are unable to mount
scratch volumes. ACLSL libraries will fail to mount scratch volumes,
though private volumes can be successfully mounted. Any attempt to mount
a scratch volume will fail with the following error:

ANR1405W Scratch volume mount request denied - no scratch volume
available.

If your tape library is ACSLS, please wait to install 5.3.1.0 until
5.3.1.1 is available where this problem is corrected. We are in the
process of refreshing the README on the FTP site indicating that this
level should not be installed by customers using ACSLS libraries. We
apologize for this inconvenience.

Thanks again!

TSM has been able to connect to an STK library running ACSLS since V5.1.
New in V5.3 is the ability to share the library between two or more TSM
instances within TSM. Prior to V5.3 you had to purchase EDT to share
drives in an STK library controlled by ACSLS.

I haven't seen anything posted about not supporting ACSLS in V5.3.

I think ACSLS support got broken in 5.3.1.0, but was fixed again in
5.3.1.1. The relevant APAR is IC45703.

reclamation tape predicting (SUMMARY)

2005-06-10 Thread Dave Zarnoch
To all

Thanks for all of your GREAT suggestions!!

I have been having good success with Bill's suggestion...

Basically this is what I do:

After expiration and migration is finished:

Change the MOUNTWAIT on the devclass to 1
Change all of the tapes on the overflow shelf to status of readw
Run reclamation for about two hours without intervention.
Stop reclamation and search the act log for all unavailable tapes.
Change the status of these tapes to readw
Check these tapes into the library
Change the MOUNTWAIT on the devclass back to normal
Restart reclamation

(Of course, I control all of this through scripts)

This has reduced my manual insertion times from about 20/day to about 3/day

What a difference!

Thanks again!

Few years back I was in a similar suitation. I had 300 online tapes but
only 60 slots.

I first of all made sure that I only would perform restores !

I left all the online tapes that couldn't be housed in the library as
available close by.

They were mostly full and readonly.

When I needed to do reclamation I used to set mountwait to 1 minute,
so that after one minute if tape was available reclamtation would end.

UPDATE DEVCLASS device-class_name MOUNTWAIT=1

UPDATE STG COPYTAPEPOOL RECLAIM=60

Ran reclamtion for a while, say 30 mins, and ended up with a list of tapes
required, from
the activity log.

UPDATE STG COPYTAPEPOOL RECLAIM=100

I then checked in the tapes made them available and repeated reclamation.

I similarly ran large restores, with restores always remembering to update
mountwait to 60
or even longer, after the first trial run .

Same situation here,

but we have 120 tapes in our 60 slot 3583.
When space reclamation runs, it fails everyday, so they take a list of
tapes TSM asked for, get them off the shelf, and check them all in.

I think this was asked a very long time ago, and there was no real answer
- you'll have to run it to acquire a list of required volumes.

..unless there IS in fact a way of determining these volumes..

It would be great to hear it.

Oh mighty gurus.

We have had to relocate some of our tapes to an overflow location
because of our silo capacity.
I basically mark them as unavailable and shelf.

When reclamation starts, I redefine some of the tapes to readw
and wait to see if TSM calls for them. I then have to physically
insert them into the silo for each request.

Is there anyway to query TSM to generate a list of tapes that it
will require for reclamation?

That way, I can redefine just those tapes and load them all at
once into the library.

Thanks!

Confused about reclamation

2005-05-24 Thread Dave Zarnoch
Folks,

I'm a little confused about space reclamation...

I ran out of empty slots in my silo so I had to move some tapes
to a shelf location.

I was really careful to only move tapes that TSM says are full
and 100% utilized.

I now see a request for one of those tapes for space reclamation.

1 - Why is TSM calling for this tape?

2 - Should I mark all of my tapes on the shelf as unavailable?
(I hesitate to do this because of problems that may occur if a restore
is called that needs this tape)

3 - What will happen when expiration runs?
(Will the tapes be called for?)

Thanks!

silo slots filling up quickly

Unfortunately our library is running out of slots very quickly and we are
not
gaining many scratch tapes even though we are very aggressive with
reclamation.

I have been relocating tapes to an external rack giving the condition:

wherestatus=Full and days=120

However, the system has recently been asking for many of these
tapes to be inserted back into the library for reclamation.

Does anyone have any advice on which tapes that are the best to
remove from the active silo into a storage rack?

05/17/05 11:41:12 ANR1040I Space reclamation started for volume
304048,

storage pool EAGLECOPY (process number 8619).

05/17/05 11:50:02 ANR1163W Offsite volume 304048 still contains
files which
  could not be moved.

05/17/05 11:50:02 ANR1041I Space reclamation ended for volume
304048.

This has occurred for 8 tapes in the last 24 hours.

Why is TSM attempting to use this tape for reclamation when it has been
labeled as vault and is offsite?

I always say, The only naïve/stupid/dumb question you have is the one you
don't ask.

1.) Previously answered by Mr. Stapleton

2.) There are ways to manually audit (and I have done this) the various
entries for TSM Tapes. Tapes are either in the DRMEDIA inventory and
offsite, onsite and used by a storage pool, offsite and unused or onsite
and unused. This is a complex process and must be approached carefully.
But very doable!!! Contact me if you desire additional information.

3.) Run an SQL SELECT statement to list your environment's tape inventory.
I like to look at volumes used by STGPOOL as well as TSM Library inventory
levels.
A: Volumes used by STGPOOL:
select stgpool_name,devclass_name,count(*) as VOLUMES from volumes
group by stgpool_name,devclass_name
NOTE: This will list volumes for ALL device classes, not just
tape.
B: TSM Library inventory:
 select count(*) as Volumes,status,library_name,owner,last_use from
libvolumes group by library_name,owner,status,last_use
NOTE: This will report volumes used in a TSM Library sharing
environment. If NOT in library sharing, you may have to alter accordingly.

Watch your stgpool volume utilizations from #3.a and your scratch count
availability from #3.b. Hopefully, you are able to maintain a healthy
scratch count. If not, these queries will let you know. You could also add
a report to show reclamation opportunities by storage pool to assist
determining where to focus your reclamation efforts.

Dave,

I ran the command and found UNAVAILABLE tapes.

These tapes were located in an overflow location in our server room.

I issued the command:

upd vol VOL access=readw

Now, TSM is requesting the tapes and awaiting mounts.

I think what happened was:

A prior admin had checked out some tapes to an overflow location
but did not monitor the system for requests.

I created a script that emails me when a request is generated.

The tapes that were marked UNAVAILABLE were created after
TSM gave up on the requests in the past.

Sound right?

Why is TSM attempting to use this tape for reclamation when it has been
labeled as vault and is offsite?

Its not. TSM is trying to using the primary pool version of the data to
recreated the copy pool version of the data and is unable to do so because
it is not for some reason able to read the primary pool version of the
data. Check to see if you have any primary pool tapes that are UNAVAILABLE
(q vol access=unavail) or whether the primary pool tapes are being used by
other processes when the reclaim is running.

This includes DB backups and normal backups.

TSM, Lotus Notes and SQL BACKTRACK

2005-05-09 Thread Dave Zarnoch
Folks,

We have been eating up a LOT of tapes doing Notes and SQL backups (Oracle).

Does anyone have any pointers concerning tape management and these?

BTWWe have a permanent retention policy on our Notes backups dictated
by Corporate.

Also, I was told that we cannot do incrementals on either Notes or SQL
backups.

Thanks!

Out of scratch tapes?

2005-05-06 Thread Dave Zarnoch
Folks,

UNfortunately as a result of miscommunication with our supplier,
we will be running out of scratch tapes in the next few days.
We should have a new shipment returning on Monday but, in
the meantime, it appears that we will run out Sunday evening.

Aside from missing backups, what other repercussions can we expect?

Thanks so much!

Time limit on TSM DB?

2005-05-06 Thread Dave Zarnoch
Folks,

Sorry if this is a FAQ..

I'm trying to generate reports from our TSM database that are
older than 1 month old and I am not finding any info.

Is this the time retention on the DB?

How do I find out?

Thanks!

Re: Time limit on TSM DB?

2005-05-06 Thread Dave Zarnoch
I'm doing some lookups for amount of data being backed up.

Here's the statement:

select
nodes.domain_name,summary.activity,sum(cast(summary.bytes/1024/1024/1024 as
decimal(6,2)))
as GB from nodes, summary
where (end_time between '2005-03-28' and '2005-03-31')
 and (activity='BACKUP' or activity='RESTORE' or activity='ARCHIVE' or
activity='RETRIEVE')
and ((nodes.node_name=summary.entity))
group by domain_name,summary.activity order by activity,domain_name asc

'2005-04-04' and '2005-04-06' generates a list

'2005-03-28' and '2005-03-31' generates no match

You are searching the activity log, which has a user defined retention
period. You can set the retention using the command:
set actlogretention ##
Where ## is the number of days to retaining records.
You can see your current settings by issuing a query status
command.

Select statement question

2005-05-04 Thread Dave Zarnoch
Folks,

I have a select statement that I use to determine the amount of MB backed
up during a specific time period:

(e.g.)

SELECT entity AS Node name,CAST(sum(bytes/1024/1024) AS decimal(8,2)) AS
MB xfer FROM summary WHERE activity='BACKUP' AND start_time= '2005-04-01

end_time= '2005-04-07 06:00' GROUP BY entity

How would I include the Policy Domain Name?

Thanks!

Try this...

select
nodes.domain_name,summary.activity,sum(cast(summary.bytes/1024/1024/1024
as decimal(6,2)))
as GB from nodes, summary where (end_time between current_timestamp - $1

current_timestamp - $2 hours) and (activity='BACKUP' or activity='RESTORE'
or activity='ARCHIVE' or
activity='RETRIEVE') and ((nodes.node_name=summary.entity)) group by
domain_name,summary.activity

$1 is the start time in hour past... like 72 for three days
$2 is the end time

nodes and tapes

node2 200136

Old tapes

2005-03-30 Thread Dave Zarnoch
Oh mighty Gurus.

Please forgive my naive question..

We are running out of slots in our library and I have examined
some of the tapes and have found that some of them haven't
been read for 1 1/2 years and some haven't been written to
in 3 or 4 years.

Can I eject these tapes and store them in a rack?

I tried 5 of them and used the following commands:

update volume vol loc=shelf
checkout libv lib vol checkl=no rem=b

Is this kosher?

Thanks!

My experience with new tapes is that you have to label them first before
you can use them within tsm.

If you have a barcode reader and a library with bulk I/O slots (like I do)
the command would be:

label libv library_name search=bulk labels=barcode checkin=scr

Which would label all the volumes in the bulk I/O slots using the barcode
reader to aquire their labels and check them in as scratch.

As usual, if this isn't quite your config you can get help within tsm by
using h label libv.
