TSM Server Upgrade from version 5.1.5.0 version 5.1.8.1

2004-02-10 Thread Edgardo Moso
Did anybody has known problem on this upgrade? Actually, when I upgraded
my server from verison 5.1.5.0 to version 5.1.8.1 the library scratch
category code was changed from 1001 to 1002. I defined 1001 fro 3490 tape
scratch and I assumed TSM will automatically pick up 1002 as scratch
category for 3590. Now after the upgrade the defined 3490 cat was changed
to 1002.

Any info please?

Thanks,

Ed

Nope.

I don't have problem with the log.
That's also my first impression but when I checked the log it has still a lot of space

Hi Ed!
This is probbably cause by a full recovery log. You will have to allocate a
new one and extend your log.
As soon as TSM starts again, start a full database backup.

Creating two tape copies offsite with each has Different Retention

2003-03-12 Thread Edgardo Moso
Hello Fellow TSMERs,

This is quite a wild idea but I just would like to solicit your opinions if
how could I satisfy the the requiremetn asked by manager. He wants in one
backup instance to create two copies for the two copy storage pools one for
onsite and one for OFFSITE. I know this can be done in TSM 5.1. Aside
from this he added that each of this shoudl have different retentions.
Say, onsite is 15 days retention and offsite is only 7 days. I tried
reading the technical manual of TSM 5.1 but I think it's impossible to do
this unless I will apply the concept of backup set.I don't think the
new features of TSM 5.1 inlcudes this. What do you think, gurus?

If I used the backupset, does anybody of you have experience on this? How
does the backupset performance behaves in the new TSM 5.1?

Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

I am just curious of on error. I have a lot of TDP installed and I'm not
getting this kind of error.
Can you please try this sqlfull.cmd?

rem
rem This is the default SQLTEST.CMD file for TDP2.2 - created 7/19/01
rem this backs pubs to adsm
rem @ECHO OFF
set sql_dir=C:\adsm\TDPSql

\sqlfull.log >> %sql_dir%\sqlsched.log

'The instruction at "0x004844a2" referenced memory at "0x0012". The

operation.

Also, there is an error at the dsmerror.log at this client saying that the

Verify your network adapter in the server if it is set as auto then change
it to full... ( if the adapter is 1 GB set it to ! GB full..not auto)
Do you have mixed clients? ( say w2k, aix, netware). Mine, I set my
selftunetxn and seltunebuf to yes. I have mixed clients in one TSM
server..

Your client network adapter should be set to full also. For the other
parameters I'm talking that's in the W2k or Winnt client.

Re: Slow backups

2002-10-13 Thread Edgardo Moso
Mario,

I got the same problem as yours before. Here's what I did:

1) for the restore, adjust your tcpbuffsize higher but be sure to set you
network adapter to correct setting. It should be set to full duplex ( if
it's capable .. say 100 MB full duplex) and in the advanced properties
parameter, set the received buffer to at least 64 or higher depending your
CPU resource and memory.
2) for backup, adjust your tcpwindowsize to atleast 63...to 2MB.., then
your network adapter as full ( not auto) ... then in the advanced
proeprties set the coalesce buffer to at least 50% of the transmit
bufferthe transmit buffer set it to almost equal to received buffer.

Try this you will see the performance differrence...if you have a 1 GB
adapter card and your resourceutil is set 10 ..you'll be getting almost the
maximum speed of 3590 tape drive...at least 35 GB.

Subject: Slow backups

Hi list,

I have just installed a TSM 5.1.0 Server on a W2K Server box. The database
was restored from a NT server running TSM 4.1.3. The upgrade was
successful and the new TSM is up and running.

The problem is that the backup operations are taking too long. A full
backup from a Notes Server that usually took 3 hours to complete is now
taking 12 hours !! The 5.1.0 cilent is already installed at this Notes
server. Please notice that I am talking about a simlpe file backup, it is
not the TDP for Domino.

Also, I perfomed the backup on two NetWare servers running the 4.1.X
client and they all are taking much more time than before, when using the
TSM 4.1.3 server.

I tried to tune some parameters at the dsm.opt in the Notes Server, like
including the RESOURCEUTIILZATION 10 and setting the MAXNUMMP to 8 at the
TSM Server but despite the multiple sessions, the backup was still
very slow.

Any ideas on this ??

Thank you.

Re: Down Level Client Code

2002-10-12 Thread Edgardo Moso
Zlatko,

Thanks for your suggestion.

By the way I can't do your second alternative because the Storage pool is
not collocated. There are other data in the tape. Although could be done
if we upgrade the TSM server from 4.2 to 5.1 because of move data command.
My only worry is we always have a restore as of now because we are moving
this application to a different apps in the w2k environment. Your first is
not applicable.

Yes, that's right. I used that most of the time instead of -node option
the -virtualnodename but this is a slip of my fingers. I was been aware in
the past but sometimes when there are lot of things going on we commit
error. Tivoli should have considered human error in the design.

Again, this is greatly appreciated.

Two choices:
- if you do not need many versions of the node's data - simply rename the
node and register new node with same name, perform full backup, delete
renamed node;
- if you need to keep all backup versions or have archives - identify
which tapes contain that node's data, mark them "unavailable" and keep
somewhere with a DB backup before dsmc-query. But when you need to restore
from that data you have to restore the DB in separate instance.
- use both - using second method preserve all data and afterwards using
first method have quick current data restores from main/production TSM
instance.

WARNING: next time use -virtualnodename= instead of
node= and this would never happen (Mark, this is nearly a FAQ
candidate).

Here's what happened: I have an old ADSM client version 3.1 runnning in

4.2.2, because if we upgrade we need to upgrade first the Solaris to a

Usually, when I'd like to verify query about the the client nodespecs I
will just use the command in my desktop "dsmc -tcps=server1 -node=node1".
I used this in this node and not knowing with the query command my node
data was changed in the server, it has an error "Down level client code"
when I run any comand in the client box. For me this is the worst
transition Tivoli had made to a higher TSM client, allowing this command
and not protecting the lower version. The worst tof all is when I asked
Tivoli support, the Manager himself said, they have no technical solution
to the problem except to upgrade it to the supported level. I know of
some solution but it's impractical to apply beause for example, I will
resotre the db back, I will sacrifice 99 % of the clients in this TSM

know how to do it.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

What kind of applications are running on your TSM Client?
What version, maintenance, fix and patch is the Client you are using?
What kind of configurations are you using in your dsm.opt file?

what I can see the Exclude list does not work. I have some Exclude.Dir
lines
and these directories will probably back up since I still see the files
normally with the GUI. Within those directories I can see specific excludes
from other excludes I do have on specific types of files that do work. I've
tried * and ? with no success.

Anyone else seen this?

Larry,

This sounds like the TSM Server (or TCP/IP in between) severed the
TCP/IP connection during the restore. Take a look at the
TSM Server activity log to see if it has any useful information.

The fastest way to get the problem resolved is to call IBM support
so they can look at the TSM Server and TDP for SQL logs to
find out why the connection was terminated.

Re: Management Class problem

2002-04-26 Thread Edgardo Moso

That happens when you set up "NTWCLASS" with higher retention number of
days or versions. The directory backup goes to the
mgt classs with the highest retention. Ours, we specified the directory
backup by using DIRMC "mgt classs".

I have TSM server 4.2.1.10 on AIX 4.3.3 ML09. I have AIX clients TSM
4.2.1.23 and NT clients 4.2.1.20. This is a new setup, has been running
a few months. I just noticed that "some" of the data from these clients
is being bound to mgt class "NTWCLASS" and not to the default Class.

I double checked the ACTIVE management class and backup copy groups.
The "DEFAULTCLASS" is the default and NTWCLASS is not. (I have
setup NTWCLASS, but not using it yet - or I thought not!!). I do not have
ANY
CLIENTOPSETS defined. I do not have these copygroups using each
other as "NEXT". I checked the dsm.opt and dsm.sys and backup.excl
files and I am not using this class. Using default or other special
classes.

Notice I said "some" of the data is going to wrong class, some of it is
going
to correct class. It is not clear on the data as to the pattern of what's
going
to wrong place.

This data should all be bound to "default". Whats's the deal?

2002-04-22 Thread Edgardo Moso

David,

I have the same environment as you are. The TSMclient version 4.1.2.20
has many problems. What I did was, I upgraded mine to 4.1.3.11
It's now working fine. Also install the latest patch for TDP ver 2.2.0.0 ,
TDPver 2.2.0.1.

Here's my sample dsm.opt file. Be sure to specify the correct
TCPCLIENTADDRESS (client ip address) and TCPCLIENTPORT(1502 - be sure this
is not used by other network)
(See attached file: dsm)

This is the command that you need to define in your service schedule (
under object). You can try running in the command line.

(See attached file: sqlfull)
You need this also. Please take note: you may either run using integrated
( NT authentication) or sqluserid ( sql defined id). Either of this need
to have a
SA privilege in the SQL and NT system admin.
(See attached file: tdpsql)

We are trying to install the TDP for SQL version 2.2 on to a
WinNT4 machine running MS-SQL. So far we have the client (version 4.2.1.20)
installed to catch all the non SQL files. It's set up to be called by the
TSM server to run and it's doing fine. All the non SQL backups are fine. We
have the SQL folders set to be excluded.

We are now trying to install the SQL part now and it does not
want to play nice. We loaded version 2.2.0.0 and we have gotten it working
to point where we can do a SQL backup from the command line and from within
the GUI. We can't get it run when it's called from the TSM server.

The programs are all installed to the default locations and I
ran the dsmcutil install command from the baclient folder to create a new
scheduler service for the SQL part. I referred it to the dsm file in the
tdpsql folder just like the docs said. I've got a schedule on the TSM
server
set to kick off at a certain time but nothing happens.

I've looked at the assorted log files nothing shows up.

If I run "tdpsqlc backup * full" it runs just fine. Am I
missing
something here? Do I need to call the sqlfull.cmd from one of the dsm.opt
files?

As a relative newbie to TSM, I'd be interested to hear what is the easiest
way to temporarily:
1- Suspend a backup schedule from running.
2- Suspend an individual client's participation in a backup schedule.

I've accomplished #2 by removing the client schedule association, though I
don't regard this method to be particularly elegant.

Thanks in advance.

Re: How Best to Suspend a Schedule

2002-04-19 Thread Edgardo Moso

It will disable all schedules. What do you like one schedule which has a
lot of nodes associated? or client only.

If you like to disable the schedule involving all associated nodes...this
is what I did...quite rude but it works..

"upd schedstartd=07/31/2002.I advance the start
date to avoid starting the next day.
You can determine the day what you want. If you dont like the scheudle to
run on 04/20/2002 then set it to 04/21/2002.

What's your setup? Are you using clientoptionset or Client scheduler?

If it's a client scheduler you can disable the client scheduler.

That would involve recycling the server, wouldn't it? I'm
guessing from Paul's e-mail that he's looking for something he
can do online.

What I've done in the past is update the start date of the
schedule to the following day, that way it won't run in the
coming evening, but will pick up again the next day without me
having to intervene.

These messages appear in the tdpsql.log file (TDP SQL 2.2.0, 2.2.0.01, and
2.2.1) from time to time (seems to follow changing management classes for a
database backup):

ACO0302E A failure occured on stripe number (0), rc = 1301
ANS0328E (RC45) The specified objects failed the merge test.

Our TSM server is 4.1.3.0 on Windows NT 4.0.

Does anyone know what is causing these, whether they are serious (our DBAs
do not trust the backups that produce them,) and what I can do to prevent
them?

Thanks.

I am busy implementing a TSM/WIN2K environment and the customer asked me to
do an interim demo today. The scheduled backup of the local client ran ok
but failed due to open files.

He then asked me what I thought was a legitimate question: Where is the
output report so that we can know why the backup failed, and not just that
it did fail.

I know other backup solutions can do this.

Apart from looking in the TSM event log is there anyway to make TSM
automatically generate an output report and say email it to someone?

If anyone has done this before I would appreciate your help.
