Re: DISASTER Client Restores Slow

2002-05-20 Thread Fletcher, Leland D.

Two thought on your comments.

First: If restores are taking a long time due to the amount of data being
restored, you could look at HSM. If your target client is a Windows 2000
machine look at OTG DiskXtender. These products will move files, based on
criteria such as age, size, and/or file type, to tape and replace them with
a very small tag on disk. When you recover your client only the tags are
restored. This provides significant performance to recovery.

Second: With the size of today's disks, recovery using tape is simply a
task that requires time. An option is to use remote disk storage. Having a
real time or almost real time set of remote disks makes recovery of even the
largest sites a few hour task.

Performance again!!!

2002-05-18 Thread Fletcher, Leland D.

A comment about performance being 9 minutes to tape and 75 seconds to disk.
Is it possible that most of the 9 minutes was tape mount and positioning
time?

 Subject:Performance again!!!

 Hello everybody,

It seems like TSM performance problems will neer
 end!!!

 Here is the new problem:

The customer is running TSM 4.2.1.0 on a Windows
 2000
server machine . An IBM rack case 82XX which
 contains
a Quantum DLT8000 tape drive is connected to the
 server.
The driver version for the Quantum DLT drive is 1.5
 and
is installed on the W2K machine. We tried a backup
 of
350MB on the local server with the Windows 2000
 Backup

utility and it took us approximately 75 seconds .

Next , we tried the same Backup from TSM using its
Device Driver and it took us about 9 minutes . We
tried switching TSM to use the Native device driver
but still we got the same performance result .

So we upgraded to 4.2.2 ; In the Device Manager for
TSM,we can see that TSMSCSI.exe is upgraded to
 4.2.2.25 and the ADSMSCSI.sys is 4.2.2.3 . The
 server
has a version of 4.2.2.25 . Still , we obtained
 poor
 backup performance .

We suspected that maybe it was a database bottleneck
( eventhough it is still empty) ; so we tried the
 same
Backup using TSM but the destination was on the
 HardDisk.
The performance was good and the backup finished
within 75seconds . So, we can eliminate the
 database
 problem.
Also, we noticed with version 4.2.2.0 that it is
crashing frequently . It was exiting abnormally .

On the site of tivoli, the latest version of TSM
server is 4.2.2 . We do not have the 5.1 release .

 does anyone have a suggestion?

 thx a lot
 Sandra

Re: Outlook PST files

2002-04-19 Thread Fletcher, Leland D.

We also have this problem. One other idea you didn't mention is to purchase
an email migration tool. EmailXtender by OTG is one product which will do
this. With this product the outlook users can move there PST (personal
store) data back into the exchange server and the PST's can be deleted.
You might think this will just move the problem. EmailXtender helps by
migrating old exchange items to TSM and replacing them with a 1K tag. The
exchange backups only backup the tag.

We have not tried the product so can not recommend. The information provided
is a quick summary of there marketing material. We will be looking into the
product at a later time.

If your users broke their .pst files up into half a dozen or so then this
may reduce the amount of subfile data moved. What is probably happening is
that they are compressing the things making everything be sent.

Subject: Outlook PST files

All,
Each day, roughly 99% of the changed data on my Windows file and print
servers is attributable to .pst files. For my Wan clients I have implemented
Adaptive subfile differencing but still running marathon backups of some
these clients. So given that pst files dramatically impact WAN (and to some
degree LAN) backups, how can I address this?
* Don't backup .pst? (Most likely not an option)
*   Force .pst archive rule
* reduce frequency of .pst updates (e.g., limit to 1/week; wishful
thinking would be this would occur on Fri so that large backups would occur
on weekend)
* reduce size of .pst by creating new pst files every so often
* Storing .pst files centrally rather than locally.
*   Other - thoughts, anyone?

I am looking to for suggestions on how to cope with this ever growing
menace.

Hi All!

We're planning to migrate all NT4 servers to Win2000 servers that Adsm
environment will be affected because the Adsm server (version 3.1.2.40) and
client version 3 are installed on NT4. I'm confused regarding the Adsm
version that is compatible to win2000 servers.

Do you think i need to upgrade to TSM or use this existing Adsm version?

Your help are really appreciated.

Thanks,

Zosi

NT Restore Question?

2001-02-07 Thread Fletcher, Leland D.

We have many different hardware configurations running Windows NT and
Windows 2000. We are not having any problems with the backups.

If we have a server failure, can we setup new hardware which is different
than the hardware we used to make the ADSM backups and restore successfully?
We would ensure that we matched the new hardware to the old in regard to a
single processor (kernel) and a multi-processor (kernel).

Novell Server Specific Information Statistics?

2001-02-07 Thread Fletcher, Leland D.

We have 5 Novell 4.1 servers which we backup nightly. In the dsm.opt file I
have a domain statement as follows:
"DOMAIN NDS". I also have tried "DOMAIN Server Specific Information",
"DOMAIN ALL-LOCAL", and "DOMAIN NDS ALL-LOCAL". None of these give me
statistics for server specific information.

All volumes and the NDS from the master and replica's backup with statistics
in the last backup start date/time, days since last backup started, last
backup completion date/time, and days since last backup completed fields.
The Server Specific Information has blanks in these fields. Does anyone know
why?

DSMADMC from Visual Basic Shell Function?

2001-02-06 Thread Fletcher, Leland D.

I'm attempting to write a VB application to monitor the daily ADSM schedule
and to issue several commands throughout the day. My problem is that when I
use the shell command nothing seems to be working. I do not get any errors
but I do not get any output either. The format of the shell command I'm
using is provided below. I have not set any environment variables and plan
on executing the VB application under Windows 2000.

The following should issue the "q fi".

Private Sub Command1_Click()
x = Shell("C:\Progra~1\IBM\ADSM\saclient\DSMADMC.EXE -id=admin -pa=x
-outfile=c:\cmdout.txt q fi")
End Sub

The function runs without error but I do not get the -outfile allocated.
Thanks in advance for any input to my problem!
